Changing HDD to SSD on my X1

Hi, I am new to this forum.
I am considering changing the original HDD on my X1 to a SSD. Is it just a simple removal of HDD and plugging in the SSD in the same slot as the HDD?
My next question is how to format the new SSD and install Win7 on it? The X1 did not come with a Win7 disk.

What are you warranty options?
The size of the SSD you'll need is 2.5" wide and 7mm high.
The side spacers are in the sytem, all you doing is replacing the drive.
The SSD should be formatted by the installation of Windows 7.
You can create recovery media from your current drive and store it to an external DVD writer, USB, or HHD/SSD.
At least 16 gig is recommended.
If you are unable to create the recovery media you can contact the tech support center and have it sent to you.

Yes, if you replace the hard drive or memory, the warranty will be voided as neither component is a DIY (do it yourself) project.
Please see the service manual at the link below, chapter 6 for the authorized service center removal and replacement procedures for those components.

Changing HDD to SSD, what are the options?

hi, guys, new to the forum, I just bought a thinkpad x130e during an on sale event at one of the local retailer, pretty excited, since i like the rugged design.
I am looking at an upgrade from 320G HDD to a 128G SSD... but i don't have any windows 7 installation disc handy, so what are the options for me to install the operating system (windows 7).
I don't know if there is a way to transfer the whole system from HDD to SSD? will there be any trick to perform? or simply i just have to purchase new copy of windows?
cos i noticed i do have a windows7 pro product key at the bottom of my thinkpad, i kinda don't want to waste the money.
please help..

You don't need to purchase another copy of Win7. You will need
1. SSD. This must be 7mm thick, not the more common 9.5mm thick.
2. USB enclosure for your HDD,
3. Software to "clone" the contents of your HDD to your SSD. Acronis True Image is a well-regarded package that does this. There are also some free utilities that can do this, however, I'm not familiar with them.
Procedure:
1. Move the HDD to the external enclosure.
2. Put the SSD in the X130e.
3. Reboot from the HDD. (You'll need to interrupt boot with Blue ThinkVantage button to specify.)
4. Install Acronis (or equivalent.)
5. Perform disk clone operation. You will need to tell the software how you want to resize partitions since you're going to a smaller disk.
6. Reboot from SSD.

Changing HDD for SSD QUESTION (U410)

Is any data held on the 500GB drive at time of reset?
Basically my question is, can I simply swap the 500gb HDD for a 250gb SSD without problems of so when I reset the Windows8 install etc will work as usual?
I will use the one click recovery button, and reset everything, except this time on the 250gb SSD.
HELP?

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
First Before you change any setting or setup,
Create a backupdrive first of your WIndows 8 using this Method and let's Name that as your Repair Image.
Download and install belarc advisor to get the product key.
The HDD will have everything, your Windows 8 Os and even the Onekey Recovery Partition, so removing your HDD will render the One click recovery button Not working.
Two ways to install windows 8 back to the blank SSD.
1 You will need an external mount for your SSD or HDD where the scenario should be both SSD and HDD are connected to the computer so you can clone the HDD to your SSD.
(If the clone failed then you can use the Repair Image)
2 You can use a retail copy or any installer copy of Windows 8 and install that to your SSD, if asked for a product key, use the Key extracted using the Belarc advisor.
Any driver needs you can download from Support.lenovo.com
Again The Preloaded HDD Contains the Recovery partition, and the One click feature will look for the HDD where it is saved.

Change HDD to SSD in iMac of 2008

Hi.
I have an iMac of 2008 and I would like to change the HDD because it was broken.
I was thinking to change it for an Solid State Drive de 240 GB in orther to obtain more performance.
Specifically I was thinking in OXZ Agility 3 of 240GB unit of 2.5''. Is it possible to do this or this drive will not work?
If it was posible, I will need and 2.5'' to 3.5'' adaptor, right?

There are a number of ifixit videos out there for a primer on what you will encounter. The front screen is held on with little magnets, it lifts off easily with a couple of suction cups. The LCD panel is held in with lots of screws. I found it a bit easier to take out the RAM before removing the chassis. The only problem I encountered was that the leads to the LCD panel were VERY short and unplugged themselves before I could mark them (they weren't color coded or labeled in any way). Take your time some of the videos suggest that you can do this in 15-20 minutes. Well, maybe if you get to practice it a few times but I would expect to spend 1.5 to 2 hours. While you are in there get all the dust out. Check your fan impellors for dust buildup, it coats the blades. You need to be in a clean environment and have the proper tools, you'll need some torx drivers, you can get them online.

Personally I am not a fan of SSDs because they are not cost effective for my personal requirements. However I do recognize that the days of the disk are numbered, but I suspect that day is still a few years off.
Crucial is a fine company and is one of the two I personally recommend for RAM (OWC being the other) so I suspect that would be a good choice to make. They are a consumer responsive company. Indeed the Amazon price is attractive but before you commit yourself, see if you can find test information and reviews on this product.
I personally cannot give you first hand information on SSDs because I have none of my own. But perhaps some one will read this post and chime in.

Hello, I have an iMac mid 2011 with a 2TB HDD, Although I know it is possible to change out the hard drive, If I wanted to change to an SSD is there any paticular brand or method I have to use to avoid the temperture sensor problem I have heard about with these models? (The fans start spinning at full speed with hard drive change out)

Change my HDD into SSD

i bought my 15inch macbook pro 2011 summer, and now i want to change my hdd into ssd, can apple help me do this?

I purchased a 120gb OCZ Vertex plus. I noticed a huge difference in boot up time. with a regular hard drive it took anywhere from 25-30 seconds, with the SSD it knocked it down to about 15 seconds..huge difference. Everything runs alot faster.
I bought this external hard drive enclosure . Then you put the new ssd in the enclosure, erase and format the drive to mac osx extended (journaled) and use a free cloning program such as CarbonCopyCloner and it makes an exact copy of your old hard drive. When it is done, you just swap the drives and you are good to go.

I would like to change a hdd to ssd on macbook pro (mid 2010). If I use time machine backup from old system on new ssd will it be copied with the old disk faults ? I would like to install fresh OS X on ssd, but at the same time I wish to keep aperture librery with all my pictures and iweb where I created my website.
This are my priorities and the rest of data I can move to external hard drive and bring them one by one to new system on new ssd.

Incorrect. Most backup programs don't do a block-for-block copy (though some have such an option on very restricted conditions). They copy the files (like cp -rp). So blank space on the source won't be the same blank space on the destination.
But serious question for a moment, do these Carbon Copy Clone drive 3rd party softwares have some kind of special function? Some people have crazy devotion to them and its peaked my interest as to why.
If you want to go through the "exercise" of creating lauchagents or cron tasks for constructing and easily changing scheduling backups, more power to you. I for one just want to schedule the stuff, possibly change the schedule if need be, and move on to more important things like doing the work that actually needs to be backed up! If you don't believe in scheduling periodic backups, well, that's another story.
Though, to be honest, I still question its usefulness when Disk utility does the same thing; select a hard disk ( "TOSHIBA MK2561GSYN Media" on my MacBook Pro), click "new image" and then click go. Then use restore in Disk Ulitity to restore the disk from the image - carbon copy goodness!
So do most other people that do backups, i.e., creating a .dmg (what you get from DU's New Image) is not the way to do backups. DU's Restore, maybe, but I've never used DU for backups.

HP ENVY 17T - J100 I NED TO REPLACE THE MAIN HDD TO SSD

I was just wanting to confirm that with the HP ENVY 17T J100 model can upgrade it's HDD to SSD? This model has the 1TB HDD. If I simply clone the HDD to an SSD of the same size. will it work? Or is there more complex setup to get the raid working between SSD/SSD rather than SSD/HDD?
also i try with 120 ssd and it didnt work. if i change the main 1 TB HDD to 1 tb SSd can i use the recovery disks to return all the windows as factory with the SSD or not and why if not

You can find the drive list in the product description section, and also under the Hard Drive list, in Component replacement procedures.
Anything outside of that list would not have been tested with the other hardware, and so is unexplored territory. It is one of those things where if a device has different current requirements, it can put strain on the other hardware or an issue of driver compatibility.

Going from HDD to SSD+HDD

I have a 2010 First Gen i7 desktop iMac computer and am looking rather fondly at SSD drives to run alongside my 1TB Internal HDD. Boot and Apps on SSD, everything else on Internal, the usual set-up.
I know I can change the location of my home folder via System Prefs > Users & Groups > Ctrl+Click User > Advanced Options
What would be the best way to deal with the migration from HDD to SSD+HDD?
Do I do a fresh install onto the SSD and then point to the home folder left over on the HDD and delete the old system files around it?
Does restoring from Time Machine via the Lion install process give me the option of choosing a different disk to send my personal files to? (this would be proffered).
Do I wipe everything clean, restore the OS from time machine, then use Time Machine from the temperary user account to restore my personal files to the HDD?
I do have two external HDDs (time machine and "junk" drive) - do I use the terminal to copy my files to the junk drive (preserving structure and timestamps using the -pR flag), then copy them back onto the HDD once everything is wiped and continue from there?
The last options seems like the most realistic, but the second would be the most proffered (if possible).
What is the best way to do this? Anyone done it before? Anything I should be careful of?

Cloning Hdd to SSD boot drive and what happens with Music/Logic Plugins

Hi, my computer is a mid-2012 Mac Pro 12 Core
It's a great computer but I'm considering upgrading my main boot drive (WD Caviar Black 1TB HDD) to a 1tB Samsung EVO 840 SSD drive (I'm using a sonnet tempo PCI card to mount an SSD that holds audio at the moment and will add another SSD for the boot drive I'm referring to) so I just had a question - if I clone the HDD to the new SSD, what happens with things like licenses for my audio plugins, such as Native Instruments Komplete, programs by IKMultemedia. programs that use an ILOK such as Steven Slate Plugins and also, WAVES plugins? Will this info all carry across to the new SSD drive or do you think I'll need to reauthorise some things? I have all the serials etc so this shouldn't be an issue, but just wondered.
Any help would be appreciated as it feels like quite a big step in that it's my main system drive!

CCC is excellent. If it doesn't work then sure, just always have a safety net of your system that is untouched.
Also, after a clean install, CLONE it!
And then use Setup Assistant. Migration Assistant.
Clone of the system can go on sparse disk images too so you don't have to partition (should have at least one though) and you can have clone from different stages and versions: 10.9.4, without Setup Assistant, migrated, full loaded with all your apps. Multiple versions.
CCC is designed to make a working bootable copy of a system so you can move the system to another boot device like hdd and SSDs without the worry.
But I think we were talking about a system that did not see a clean install of Mountain Lion or Mavericks so it is over due for one!

Upgrade HDD to SSD (Do i need to re-install?)

I just bought an SSD (Samsung 470 series is the one thats best with MBP right?) and i want to replace it with the stock HDD that came with my 2011 MBP 13".
What if i upgrade RAM from 4GB to 8GB and transfer from HDD to SSD by carbon copy cloner. Do i need to re-install Lion then?
Is TRIM automatically enabled if i transfer from HDD to SSD?

Upgrading the RAM is fine by itself. Just know you only have two slots, and thus need matching pairs of 4GB modules to increase the RAM from 4GB to 8GB. If you have $900, OtherWorld Computing has 16GB of RAM (two 8GB modules) for sale. (no compensation)
Use the online Crucial checker and MacTracker to make sure your getting the correct specs of the RAM (and the amount of modules) before purchasing.
What you need to do is use the free to use (donations accepted) Carbon Copy Cloner on the HDD while it's still in the machine, clone to a external powered drive and hold option to boot from it, test it out that it works.
Then make the HDD to SSD switch and option boot from the clone again, format the SSD HFS+ Journaled and use CCC to clone it onto the SSD.
OtherWorld Computing and iFixit has videos, pictures, instructions and tools needed.
When you clone, it clones the OS X partition only, not both your OS X partition and the Lion Recovery Partition, which in your case is unnecessary to have if you have a "hold option" bootable clone. (should keep two at times)
If you need to download Lion installer again, simply use MacAppStore and hold option and click on Purchases, either in Lion or Snow Leopard and then make a couple of " hold c" bootable DVD's from these instructions.

These DVD's made from these instructions contain the full OS X Lion, not a Recovery Lion disk or the Lion Recovery Partition which Apple provides a download for and requires a lengthily Internet connection to download Lion before it's installed.
Far as setting the TRIM, I don't know about that. Hopefully someone else will answer.

He replaced his hard drive with a OCZ Vertex, the fastest SSD's on the planet and also his Superdrive with a 7,200 RPM 750GB drive for storage (note: you can't boot from a Lion/Snow/Windows DVD from a external optical drive) so he would know best what to do.
Also OCZ just came out with a 480 gb or so very fast SSD, the Vertex 3 series, just as fast as the smaller SSD's but with more storage capacity, so that would be worth checking into. (smaller SSD's are faster, larger older ones are just a bit faster than a regular hard drive)
Also check out your Mac model's SATA number using the fre MacTracker and System Profiler, this way you can by the right SSD for the price and know your bus speed limitation accessing the SSD.

I am upgrading from HDD to SSD and would like the step by step direction of how to do it on my 13inch MacBookPro mid 2010. Also, I would like to do a clean install of the OS onto the new SSD, and simply transfer my data(i.e. documents, pictures) from the old HDD to the new SSD(Samsung 500GB)

Turn the Mac on (or reboot it) and press command-option-R as soon as you hear the startup chime. Hold the keys down until you see a globe, then release. When the Recovery Menu appears you choose Disk Utility and format the SSD for use in a Mac (Erase>Set Format to MacOS Extended (Journaled), then exit Disk Utility and choose Install OSX
You will need to be connected to the Internet and your Mac should detect your network and ask for a password automatically when Recovery Starts.

Yes you can use that SSD Samsung MZ-7TD250BW 840 Series Solid State Drive (SSD) 250 GB Sata 2.5-Inch as the Q190 uses a standard SATA 3.0Gb/s, 2.5" wide HDD as per this pdf data sheet.
You may also want to check Crucial's SSD Upgrade for the Ideacentre Q190.
