Changing how iPhoto saves my photos in iPhoto Library

I want to change the way iPhoto saves photos as "rolls" with the date in various subfolders.  Instead, I want to save the photos (when I import them from my camera) to folders based on the subject/event name.  Is this possible?

Once you get the photos into iPhoto create a smart album with the criteria you want. You can group photos by any of the following items or combination of items:

  • Changing How iPhoto stores files

    Hi,
Okay so while i plan on dumping my webmail accounts for a .mac account, im still curious about the answer to this question:
    - Lets say i want to email photos through my university webmail. Lets assume im not using the (unsupported) httpmail extension for mac mail client either . When i get to "upload files" and start browsing my harddrive, the 'photos' directory is a complete mess! All the photos are stored by the date they were saved, instead of say, the album they are in. Which makes it very difficult to find the photos i want to send. Now, obviously one solution to this is - everytime i want to send something via webmail, goto iphoto, select the photos, and then export to some temp folder on the desktop, and then select that folder when uploading, and then delete the temp folder. But this seems like an unecessary extra step. So really im curious if its possible to change how iPhoto handles the storing of files on the HD (I think this is due to my ridiculous Windows behaviors coming out).

    Marjorie,
The titles you give the photos stay within iPhoto. The file name of the image in the Finder stays the same. I don't know about how you have your window views set up, but for me, when I navigate to the iPhoto Library to find a photo after hitting the attach button, I get a preview of each image I highlight. It may be because I have my Finder window set to columns, and in the Finder view (View>show view options) I have "show image preview" checked.

  • How do you import photos from a library on an external drive to the current library running in iPhoto?

How do you import photos from a library on an external drive to the current library running in iPhoto? I have a few different pictures in each library and would like to have all my pictures in both libraries. The library on the external drive is my backup. I would appreciate any help.

Depends on exactly what you want to do.
Just move some of the Photos? FIle -> Export from one and export the shots to the Finder. Then import them to the other.
    This User Tip
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4921
has details of the options in the Export dialogue.
Move the photos and all versions and metadata: use iPhoto Library Manager it's the only way to do this while preserving everything. Merge two Libraries into one?
If you have Aperture 3.3 or later and iPhoto 9.3 or later you can merge libraries with Aperture.
Otherwise the only way to merge Libraries is with the paid ($20) version of iPhoto Library Manager

How to save a photo in my iphoto library as wallpaper on my computer screen?

In addition to FoxFifth's recommendation, you can also copy the link location, or copy the image, and subsequently paste into another application. In some instances (e.g. openclipart.com), one can drag/drop images into local application documents. Exceptions are images that were created with Adobe Flash, HTML/CSS, or blocked from access by the site owner.
Just because you can copy an image from another location, does not automatically grant you the ownership, or use rights to that image on creative works of your own (e.g. blog).

  • How can I hide photos in my library?

How can you hide photos in the library in iphoto 4.0.3 ?
    Please help,
    David

One way you can (unsecurely) hide your photos is to put iPhoto into View by FilmRoll. Simply close any rolls containing photos you don't want seen though this will put all photos in those rolls out of sight. This doesn't block anyone from opening those rolls but it keeps them out of sight as people scroll thru (under supervision).
Another way is to simply trash all pictures you don't want seen since most people don't bother looking in the trash. You can pull them out later unless you make (or allow) the big mistake of emptying the trash before undeleting them. Make a backup.
Perhaps the best option is to go to iPhoto preferences and turn on sharing. You can then choose which albums to share with other accounts on the same computer. Log into a different account (create one if necessary) when you want to let someone browse your library. From that other account they will only be able to see the albums you have approved for sharing

  • How can I search photos in my library by definition (300dpi or 72dpi) ?

Hi, I have several questions before buy Lightroom licence but I haven't find how to do with trial version.
1° How can I search photos in my library by definition (300 dpi or 72 dpi) ?
2° Is it possible to search photos by same chromatic scale (all photos with most green for example, to match with a green page setting)
3° Is it possible to find doubloons (exactly same photo but not same title or format) ?
(I'm french, so please try to make simple answer)
    Thank you for your answer.
    Aline

    1) This question is based on a misunderstanding of resolution. A digital photo does not have resolution, i.e. it is neither 300 ppi nor 72 ppi not anything else ppi. A digital image has only a pixel dimension - so many pixels horizontal, so many vertical. That's all. Resolution comes only into play when we print an image. For a quality print we need a certain minimum amount of dots per inch. But as long as the image is digital (in the camera or on the computer) it has only pixel dimension - for instance 2000 x 3000 pixels. Therefore you cannot search by 300 ppi or 72 ppi.
    2) What do you mean by "chromatic scale"?  And what do you mean by "photos with most green"?
Do you mean search for a photo that is taken - let's say - in a forest vs. a photo taken in the desert? No, you can't search for that in Lr since Lr does not recognize image content.
But if you mean by "mostly green" a color label - yes you can search for photos that have a green color label (or a red one, or yellow, etc.)
    3) No. As already mentioned, Lr does not recognize image content. An exact duplicate of an image that has a different file name is a different image for Lr.

  • How do you move photos from one library to another in iPhoto 9.4.3

I have half 2009 photos in one library and the other half in a different library.  I'd like to move several photos to one of the libraries to make a photo book.  How do I do this?

    use iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -
Otherwise you can move the image and selected metadate by exporting form one library and importing into th eother
FWIW it is almost always better to have a single iPhoto library with all of your photos in it

  • I have, by mistake, caused all my photos in a large book I am making to revert to the original. This after a long time spent editing etc. I don't understand how iPhoto library works. I have aTime Machine. I also have an EHD backed up 2 days ago.

    Yosemite 10.10.3
i am making a photo book with iPhoto, had already started it when Photos superseded iPhoto so I carried on. Have spent a lot of time on it, it's a large book.
BY mistake I caused all the photos to revert to original.
I have Time Machine and I backed up Photolibrary to EHD 2 days ago.
BUt it I don't understand iPhotos library. If I replace existing library from Time Machine,  all my projects, albums etc. be there as they were before my BIG mistake?
I have read that Time Machine is not suitable for back ups of iPhoto so should I try to use my EHD? In finder it just shows 'iPhotoLibrary'. So the same question arises - does the Library incorporate all my projects and the work I've done on them up to the date of back up?
I would be so grateful for help and advice

  • How to save a photo I receive via email?

How can I save a photo that is received via email on my iPhone (through my gMail account). Can this be done? How can I save a photo to my iPhone's photo library when I get one via email on the phone?

    Not possible with the iPhone.
Assuming you are also accessing this email account with an email client on your Mac and you use iPhoto for storing photos, save the emailed photo to iPhoto - Apple's Mail application includes this option from or with the received message - saving the photo direct to iPhoto and then transfer the photo from iPhoto to the iPhone via the iTunes sync process.
This is the only way - at the present time anyway.

  • How to save my photo library in a web service.

    Hello:
In first place sorry for my poor english...
I would like to know how to secure my photo library in a web service. I have 100gb free with my internet provider and i would like to use it. The problem is that i don´t know wich is the folder that i have to duplicate in the web and where to find it.
I´ve been looking in the apple help services but i only find help for mobile me or time machine.
    Thanks in advance...

If you want to back up your Library to the Web then you need to back up the iPhoto Library in your Pictures Folder.
However, many people complain that it can take days for the upload - and in the event of a problem - download to restore.

  • How to save resized photo in the event

I am having trouble saving my resized photo in my event. When I open an event, choose the photo I want to resize, and use the export feature, I am unable to choose my event as a place to save to. Any suggestions. What I end up doing is saving it somewhere else I don't want to based on my limited choices in the drop down and moving it to the event. This is a hassle.
I also tried to resize the photo using the preview program and saving it to my event. THis way I at least got the option, but the saved file doesn't show up in the iphoto event, only in the finder when I view all of my photos.
Any suggestions. In a perfect world I just want to upload photos from my camera, iphoto creates an event which is great. and now I just want to resize them and have the original and the resized photo in the same event visible in iphoto. Is this possible?

Welcome to the Apple user discussion forums
If you want to have two different resolutions of a photo in iPhoto (and I can think of no reason to have this) you have to export the photo in the second resolution and import that new photo into iPhoto
You should never "save" anything into the iPhoto library - iPhoto is a database and you should never add or modify anything inside the iPhoto library

  • How to save Shared photo stream as an album?

I would like to be able to save the photos i shared to my photo stream as album. I already managed my photos on my iphone and sent to my photo stream as an album but I also would like to have them as albums as well on my iPhoto without reorganizing again. Is it possible? Thanks.

Yes. First they would have to be saved to an Event in the iPhoto Library. Then you can create an album for them.
Do you have iPhoto setup to automatically import Photo Stream photos into the library?
If you do they will already be in your library.

  • How to save processed photo

I know I just started using Aperture, but my question shouldn't be this difficult.  If I process a photo in Aperture (use Noise Reduction as an example), it gets saved and I only see one version of the picture in my Library (the processed version)...unless, of course, I revert to the original.  But if I use a Plug-In like NoiseWare to clean up the photo (and it obviously does a much better job than Aperture at noise reduction) I'm then stuck with two photos in my Library...the original and the one from NoiseWare.  If I try to delete the original, I get a warning that I'm going to lose all versions of this photo, and I presume that means also the version I processed with NoiseWare, so I didn't try clicking ahead with this.
If I clean up a photo there's about a .00000001% chance I'm ever going to touch it again, so why am I forced to have two copies of it in my Library, doubling its size and making photo management a nightmare?  I'm surely missing something here and hopefully someone will enlighten me as to what it is.  I just want to be able to clean up a photo and move on.  Thanks for any suggestions.

I guess I could try keeping the plug-in and then if I decide I don't like the workflow inconvenience I can uninstall it.  I hope when I do this the extra stacked images will disappear?
Uninstalling the noise reduction plug-in will not deleted the image versions you created with it.
You will have to delete them manually.
my database will likely double in size...or at least be a lot large considering the number of photos I would have to process with the plug-in.
It may even be worse: The quasi-masters sent to the plug-ins will be PSD-files or TIFF, depending on your preferences, and that file format usually has larger files than the corresponding raw format.
You might consider to change your workflow a bit, so you can delete the imported original image and still be able to revert:
Make sure, you backup all imported images to your backup location, before you start editing them in Aperture.
Do the noise reduction, before you do any other edits, so that the original versions are not used in any album or product.
Then delete the original version, after you have convinced yourself, that the edited image and your backup of the original are o.k.
But you will have to take good care of the backed up originals, since they will be the only copies of your original files, if you ever need to revert to the original.
If you are worried about the size of your library, it might be a better approach to convert images that are not used very often into referenced images by relocating the originals to an external drive.
