Changing iPod from Windows to Mac without losing music?

I have a mini that was always used on my PC with Windows. My computer was stolen while I was out of town, and I took it as a sign to finally upgrade to a Mac. I still have my iPod, and I want to use it on my new iMac, but the iPod was formatted to work with Windows.
I know I can restore my iPod, but is there anyway that I can keep from losing all the music I already have on there? How exactly do those transfer programs work, and would they work in my situation? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

technically your ipod should still be usable with the mac. You can put the ipod into whats called manual mode. This way the ipod will retain the music and you can use the ipod with your mac. You just wouldn't be able to use the auto sync feature. go to this site http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61148 that will tell you how to select that option. As far as getting music that is not purchased from itunes from the ipod to the computer i am not an expert at that so i really dont have any suggestions other than i know it can be done. If you could find a good transfer program im sure it would be simple enough to move the music onto the mac then restore the ipod and load the songs back up.

  • Re-format iPod from Windows to Mac without losing songs/restoring...?

I have a 5th generation iPod video that was originally formatted with my old Dell PC laptop - I have just recently purchased a new MacBook Pro and want to format/update my iPod for it to work properly with my new Mac.
How can I go about doing this without having to restore my factory settings and losing all of my songs?
    Please let me know, thanks...

The windows formatted iPod should still work on the MacBook Pro, now make sure you hold down Command + Option when you connect the iPod and continue holding them until they are completely mounted. What this does is does not allow the computer to update the iPod, and if a pop-up comes up, do not allow it to update the iPod. Now, we can back-up the songs. Yamipod is great for this.
    Yamipod --> http://www.yamipod.com/main/modules/home/
Now, if you still have your old computer, i suggest using your iPod in disk mode to put all your songs on it, and import them into iTunes on your Macbook Pro, and to re-format the iPod so that it will be Mac formatted.

  • Switching Ipod from windows to mac without losing all data

Please help. I set up my Ipod last year with windows computer, downloaded most of my CD's and lots of other music, last month laptop was stolen and I decided to buy a macbook as replacment.
I would like to transfer all songs from IPOD to new itunes library, which requires converting IPod to hard disk, but in mac I am not allowed this function, or I can't find it. The tick box is not shown in the summar page
Can someone give me an idiots guide, the instructions in various mac help sites are not getting me anywhere!

First, please note that your iPod previously formatted on a PC, should be able to read by your Mac, but not the other way round. You can copy the music files from your iPod to the iTunes on your Mac by download and install a 3rd party software

  • Changing ipod from windows to Mac

I am having a lot of trouble for my new mac computer to recgnize my old ipod that was formatted in windows. Do you know how to do this so that i can later recover the music that i previously had saved there and pass it on to my mac?

Not to Hijack this thread, but I have some questions as I am going through the same issue. Here are my questions:
    - i was looking on the website and It gave instructions to reset and upgrade. This would wipe the ipod and reinstall the software. If I do this on a PC can i load it (the ipod) with MAC software?
    - My songs are currently backed up on an external PC HD. if I were to burn them as MP3 files from that PC hard drive will my G4 be able to read them?
    any help would be appreciated

  • Convert iPod from Windows to Mac

I've been using my iPod (30GB) with Windows and am just now switching everything to a new MacBook Pro. Do I need to do anything to switch my iPod from Windows to Mac, or does it just sync with the new Mac without my having to do anything?

Macs can read Windows formatting so your iPod should work Fine on your MacBook. However if you don't intend using the iPod on Windows again you should consider restoring it and formatting it on the Mac. If you keep it in Windows format you'll have to connect it back to a PC to make any firmware updates otherwise the formatting will be changed. One other thing, if you haven't transferred your music from the PC to the Mac you won't be able to sync the iPod if you do you'll lose what's on it. To be sure you don't accidentally erase the content you should set the iPod to manual update until your music is on the Mac.
If your iPod is set to update automatically take care when connecting to your new computer and an empty iTunes. You will get a message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
You can also use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘ Apple) keys. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and it will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer. You should then be able to change your settings: iTunes Keyboard Shortcuts for OSX
Just some additional information in regard to moving the music from your iPod in case you no longer have the PC. If you have any iTMS purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers has been introduced with iTunes 7 A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of non iTMS content such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there's a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to your Mac. The procedure is a bit involved but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
If you prefer something more automated there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. I use Senuti but have a look at the web pages and documentation for the others too, you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos and games as well. You can also read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    Senuti Mac Only
    iPodRip Mac Only
    PodWorks Mac Only
    PodView Mac Only
    iPodAccess Mac & Windows
    YamiPod Mac & Windows
    PodUtil Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac & Windows
Keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync again.

How do I reprogram my ipod from Windows to Mac?

Connect the iPod.  Decline any offers from iTunes to sync it, if this is the first time the iPod has been connected to the Mac.  When the iPod appears in the iTunes sidebar, under DEVICES, select it there.  Over to the right, on the Summary tab, there is a Restore button.  Click it.  Follow the prompts.
Restore will erase the iPod and install the latest software, using default settings.  If it is connected to a Mac when you do the Restore, it will use Mac formatting during the erase.  That's basically the only difference.  The software is the same, so it is not really "reprogrammed."

  • I want to move from pc to mac without losing app data

i have a new mac mini that has itunes and some music/tv shows/movies on it.  but i want to move my main itunes library from my pc to my new mac mini.  i know i can just copy my itunes folder from my pc to the mac, but i want to move my iphone data from pc to mac without losing app data (especially game data).  can I just copy my pc iphone backup data files to the mac and have them work in mac format?  or can i just plug in my iphone on the new mac, do a backup/restore and continue syncing from there?  does anyone have any advice on the best way to move iphone from pc to mac?

I was fighting this battle the past few days myself; but actually it is REALLY easy now. See here:
    http://www.macworld.com/article/146958/2010/03/moveitunes_windowsmac.html
Then, once iTunes was on the Mac, I did this:
    1. On the Mac rename ...\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl as ...\iTunes\iTunes Library
    2. On the Mac delete ...\iTunes\iTunes Library Genius.itdb (Apparently the PC & Mac versions are not compatible - iTunes will just rebuild it later)
    3. Launch iTunes and immediately press & hold down the Option key until a dialog opens asking you to Choose a library. Navigate to the folder/drive you've copied from the PC and open ...\iTunes\iTunes Library.
(thanks to turingtest2 for the above steps)
That was it. Did it yesterday evening. All playlists, libraries, everything copied fine. No problems; no broken links. Perfect.

  • Migration from PC to Mac without losing application data (savegames etc.)

    Hello everyone,
I am migrating from from my old Windows PC onto a MacBook Pro, and I'm having difficulties with iTunes and my iOS devices (iPhone 4, iPad 1). Maybe someone here can help me out, I'd be ever so grateful.
I set up iTunes on my MBP yesterday and logged in to my account. I replaced the empty iTunes Media folder with my old one (which contains all my music, videos and applications) via an external hard drive.
First problem: it wouldn't import these files into my new library automatically. Just showed me an empty library I think I imported the entire iTunes Media folder manually yesterday via "Add to folder". The status right now (after some experimentation) is old iTunes Media folder copied, but nothing imported (that is, I have an empty library).
When I connected my iPhone and tried to synch, I first had to authorize the MacBook for the iPhone. So far, so good. However when I tried to synch iTunes warned me that if I synch, all data on the iPhone will be removed and replaced by the data from my new local library (which is, of couse a copy of my old library, but doesn't store application data like savegames).
I tried to do it via "transfer purchased items from iPhone", which took forever, but yielded the same result: a warning that all data on the iPhone would be erased.
So the question is: How do I connect my iPhone and iPad to iTunes on my new Mac without losing application data like settings and savegames? And why is this so complicated and intransparent? I should be able to just copy my media, say "authorize this Computer, then add iPhone to the registered devices" and then proceed like nothing ever changed.
I searched the net until three in the morning yesterday, but couldn't find anything that sounded safe enough to give it a try.
Thanks in advance and best Regards,
    Nate
PS: I do have the backup-folders from my old PC on a USB stick - are those going to help?

  • Transfering my ipod from windows to mac

i've been tying to reformat my ipod from windows so i can use it with my new mac book pro, but i can't find the cd my ipod came with and obviously my mac won't read it. what can i do????

I am also wondering how to do a similar thing. I just got a Macbook Pro and have a 5th gen. iPod that I have quite a few songs on. When I first got the iPod, I was running it on a PC. I have heard that to use it on my Mac, without erasing the few songs that I have in my new iTunes, that I need to restore my iPod on my old computer and set it to run with a Mac and then plug it into my Mac to completely re-write all of the songs onto it.
    Is this right?

  • Can I put my music from my ipod onto a new computer without losing music?

I have had to recently get a new computer. I have iTunes downloaded. I would like to put the music that i have on my ipod onto the new computer. I am afraid to sync in that I will lose my music and have to redo my library and lose purchased music as well.
Is it possible to do it without losing music?

One of the reasons why including your iTunes library with your computer's backup is a good idea. Use this link for future reference in this regard.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1751
iTunes includes an option to transfer iTunes content that was purchased/downloaded from the iTunes store from an iPod, iPad, and iPhone, but this is for iTunes content that was purchased/downloaded from the iTunes store only.
First you need to authorize your new computer with your iTunes account with iTunes if you haven't already done so.
With your iPhone connected and without syncing, at the iTunes menu bar go to File and select Transfer Purchases From - the name of your iPhone.
