Changing itunes folder location

I am unable to play music from itunes, after having upgraded my hard drive to solid state.
I have selected the path in advanced preferences, then selected that path again under file,
I selected organize library, and all of the albums and only half the artwork, but that's another subject,
are now available from itunes music, but the songs will not play. I believe my music library is identical on two separate external hard drives, I can move this drive to my imac and access the music but no longer on the mini, since installation of SSD. The settings on each computer seem to be identical, but obviously I've overlooked something?

Change the location of the library in the Preferences. This tells iTunes where new music that you add will go, but it won't move your existing music there.
Back in iTunes, use the Consolidate Library option. This will copy all the music currently in iTunes to the new Library location, along with organizing it and renaming it and such. Once this is done, you can check that the music is there, and then delete the old location.
Few things:
-There's a couple of files that live in My Music\iTunes. These are an ITL and an XML file. These cannot be moved. They contain all the information about what's in your iTunes library.
-If you still want to move them, use TweakUI to change the location of your My Music folder to somewhere that won't get copied to the server. Then move/copy the library files to that new location.

    Howdy carpetjim,
When you change the folder location like that, it changes where new songs and media are stored. To actually load the library you need to do this:
Steps to create or choose a different iTunes Library file
If iTunes is running, quit iTunes.
If you are using Windows, hold down the Shift key and from the Start menu and choose All Programs > iTunes > iTunes.
If you are using the Mac, open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option key.
You should see one of the following screens:
    Additional information
If you do not see one of the screens above, then you did not hold the correct key at the correct time. You may want to try again. Note that if you pinned iTunes to the Start menu programs, and open it that way, it may not work.

  • Itunes will not recognise when i change the folder location

I have removed all my music from my pc hard drive and moved it to an external hard drive to free up space. i have changed the folder location in preferences but itunes still says that each and every track cannot be found. it doesn.t revert back to the original location just doesn't find the tracks..... i've done the same thing on my powerbook and it worked fine - can anyone help me out please?
    thanks very much.

Changing the location of your iTunes Music folder in your iTunes Preferences doesn't affect files that are already in your Library ... it only affects where tracks that are added from that point on will be located.
If you still have the tracks on your PC, you can make use of this article in the Apple Knowledge Base.
If the tracks aren't on your PC any longer, post back for another strategy.

  • How do I change the folder location

All my ipod touch music and videos are on my computers hard drive. They are taking up too much room and I want to move them to an external hard drive. How the heck do I do this?
    Thanks.

There is an outline on how to do this under ITUNES --> help check :
"Changing where your iTunes files are stored"
I would first backup all music and video files before doing this process.
Changing where your iTunes files are stored
-------------------------from above help file from itunes --------------------------------------
By default, songs and other files you import into iTunes are placed here:
    My Documents/My Music/iTunes/iTunes Music
To change the default location of imported files:
Choose Edit > Preferences and click Advanced.
Click Change and select a new location for your files.
From now on, new songs and other items you import will be stored in the new location. Songs you've already imported stay in their current location.
To restore the iTunes Music folder as the default storage location, click Reset (in the Advanced pane of iTunes preferences).
To move already-imported files to a new location (for example, a different folder on your hard disk, or a different computer), follow the instructions above and then quit iTunes. Select everything in the iTunes Music folder and drag the files to the new location (don't drag the entire iTunes Music folder, only its contents). For information about finding out where individual audio files are stored, search help for "finding files."

  • Locating files after changing iTune file location

    iTunes 7 XP Pro
I changed the default location and moved the contents of the iTunes Music folder, however iTunes does not automatically recognize the new location for existing files. Is there anyway I can globally change the location in iTunes so I do not have to change the location of hundreds of files one at a time?
    Thank you

The location you set in preference only sets the location for all FUTURE additions to the library. Anything already in your iTunes library will remain in the location they were already being accessed.
If you want to move all the files to the new location, then use the consolidate command. This command copies all files not located in the preference location into that location, thus consolidating them to one location. As I said, I think it copies, not moves the files. So after a consolidate, you may need to go and delete the old locations manually.

  • Changed iTunes library location....

I just changed my lib location.  Created a new dir on the external HD, changed the preferences to reflect that in iTunes.  However, when I get info or play one of the files it still goes to the old location to play the file.  Thoughts?

The library.itl file is the central controlling file of iTunes. It contains the file locations. When you open this library it displays your content (as it know it) and playlists, etc.  When you play a track it checks the file location in iTunes and goes and plays that file.  If the file is not where iTunes thinks it is, you get a broken link.
You didn't change your library location. What you did was tell iTunes, in future, to put all media in a new location.  Did it ask to move your old media, and did you say yes?  If it didn't move it then you may end up with split media.  Existing media is still where you put it (as seems to be the case from your description), new media will go on the external.
In general the above is not what most people want to do.  To correctly move the "library" (I say collection so as to not confuse this with the library file) you want to drag the whole iTunes folder to the external and tell iTunes when it starts up where the new location is.  This is assuming you have everything in a nice, neat package in that folder. Now if you're in an intermediate stage then things are messy, but you'll have to let us know where you various files are at this stage.
Some people only want to move their media.  That's okay, but you have to know what iTunes is doing, and also realize it gets tricky when moving the collection in the future.

  • Changing iTunes File Locations

    Greetings,
This is probably a simple question that's been answered hundreds of times, but I can't seem to find it. I just want to move my music files from the "My Music" folder (and all subfolders) to a new external drive. Aside from manually moving the folders over and changing the default location setting in iTunes, is there anything else I need to do?
    Thank you in advance.

  • Itunes folder location is correct but music and books pointing to time machine

hi, i was hoping someone could help with an itunes 10.6.3 issue i have.  i am using an imac with OS X 10.5.8.  when i open itunes preference, the itunes media folder location is correct.  however, when i look at a song or book info, it is pointing to a time machine backup location.  i believe this is preventing me from listening to any music on my imac and preventing the music and books to sync with to my iphone.  thanks.

    Okay, thats weird.
    Try to consolidate your media.

also, in the iTunes music folder, go inside to manually check if the songs are there.

  • Can't change itunes library location to external hard drive

I did have my itunes library location set to an external disk (my time capsule) and this worked great with my macbook pro. However, the macbook pro "died" last week and now I'm trying to set my new replacement imac itunes library to also be the external hard drive.
The advance tab on itunes preferences indicates that library location is set as requested however, I can't see any of my music in my itunes window.
I could of course just copy my music on to my new computer but that'll take ages and I'd rather keep it on the time capsule.
    Many thanks
    Anna

So the additional step  need to do was make sure the copy files to itunes media folder is unchecked and the go to itunes>files>add to library then select my itunes music folder in my itunes location on the time capsule. Done!

  • Itunes folder location problem

I recently consolidated my library to an external drive but every time I restart iTunes (after a reboot) the default location reverts to local harddrive on my Macbook. Did I consolidate incorrectly? How do I get the music folder location to stay pointed to the external drive (which is connect to an Airport Extreme and always turned on)?

    System prefs -> Accounts.
Select your account and add the external drive to your Login items.

  • ITunes folder location in Windows 64-bit

In iTunes, under Edit-Preferences-Advanced-iTunes Media folder location it says:
    C:\Users\[user name]\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media
My desktop is a PC running Windows 7 64-bit; is that folder location right or should there be a "64" in the path somewhere?
When I first installed iTunes on it, I did not realized I needed the 64-bit version. I have now removed the incorrect version and I installed the correct one, but I would like to be sure about the proper location before I transfer purchases from my iPod Touch.

    Hello Corey,
    C:\Users[user name]\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media
That is the correct default location where iTunes is installed. And if you aren't having any issues, I wouldn't worry about it too much anyways.

  • Changing music folder locations?

Has anyone tried to put their itunes music onto an external hard drive? I think I did it correctly, but now when I click on a song to play I have to go back and find it on my external drive then click open to make it play. I was hoping there is an easier way, so I don't have to click on 7000+ songs indiviually.
    Thanks.

You didn't say what you did so it's hard to be sure.
If you copied the iTunes Music folder to an external drive, did you set the location of the iTunes Music folder in Edit>>Preferences>>Advanced>>General.
If you copied the whole iTunes folder to the external drive, you would need to start iTunes with the shift key held down, then when asked to choose a library, navigate to the iTunes folder on the external drive and choose iTunes Library.itl.

  • ITunes Folder Locations Preferences...

Howdy - Does anyone know why the folders for Podcasts, Movies, Audiobooks and TV Shows are buried deep within the song files in "iTunes Music Folder" and not more conveniently in the "iTunes Folder"? I moved "Podcasts" once, but new episodes were sent to an automatically created replacement folder back in the "iTunes Music Folder". Can these files be redirected? Thanks! Any musings are welcome - I'm not garthy!

    Hello!
Apparently, apple designers decides it was a good idea to hard code those paths. You can't change them, at least not for podcasts and iTS downloads. For content obtained elsewhere, you can sort them as you like and drag them into the itunes library - if copy files is unchecked, they will stay where they are.
I've sent feedback to Apple on this. I suggest you do, too. It makes no sense to have the other media buried in the music folder. I would like to have movies go to one drive that has a lot of free space and other content go someplace else. I know it can be done, as itouch apps and photos can be in a completely different place.

  • Can't change iTunes folder - Keeps copying apps/music to C: drive

I'm trying to keep all of my media organized - I have told iTunes to chage the drive and folder for my media, yet every time I download something, it is putting it into my C: dive (My Music) folder.  How do I fix this?
    I'm running Win7 64bit & 64bit iTunes

An "iTunes library" has to be understood as a combination of two things, the iTunes Music folder with all the music files and the iTunes Library file, which is a catalog of information about the music files that make up a particular library. (The .xml file is not critical but is automatically created by iTunes.) This description is a little simplistic, because the music files associated with a library can actually be located in multiple places, not just in the default music folder.
The location of the folder to which new music files are ripped is determined by the iTunes Music folder setting you described. The default location for the iTunes Library file is in the home/Music/iTunes folder--no matter where the iTunes Music folder is located. It is possible to keep the iTunes Library file in an alternative location; see below.
From what I can gather, in trying to relocate your music files, you also moved the iTunes Library file. This is not a big deal. In response, iTunes replaced it with a fresh iTunes Library file (but this would be empty).
Hold down the Option key when you open iTunes to have iTunes present you with the opportunity to navigate to and select your old library file that you relocated. Alternatively, find the old library file and copy (don't delete anything till you've got everything working again) it back to the default location at home/Music/iTunes.
