Changing laptop.

My old laptop has died and I have bought a new laptop accordingly. I had a substantial I-Tunes library on the old one. Some of the songs are on an old I-Pod, some are on burnt CDs and some are just on the old laptop. How can I get all of my library back? Can I burn songs back from CDs to I-Tunes and add then to some of the ones from my very old I-Pod? Can I get my old library back despite the laptop being dead?
Any help would be overtly appreciated! Thank you all in advance.

Hi there Mr B.
There are a few ways to acomplish this. I would recommend taking a look at the article below.

    This has been posted for almost 2 weeks and not one reply. Thanks a bunch! As a newbie to OOo and Mozilla, I am not impressed with responsiveness to support needs with either. So, the future of my new experiment with going non-Microsoft remains an open question.
    Oddly enough, the problem mysteriously went away. I have followed the same routine and changed no settings. Suddenly all of the downloaded spreadsheets were no longer read-only. So I consider the matter resolved.

    If you had it on a laptop that crashed and you threw away, it is still considered as activated on that machine.  YOu should contact Adobe by chat or by phone and have them deactivate for you.

  • Changed laptops, new itunes?

    I've just changed laptops, and I've downloaded iTunes but I don't know how to get my music from my ipod to the iTunes on my new laptop? It isn't connecting and I can't get on the old laptop to de-authorize that laptop, can anyone help?

    OK I have done this recently and I found the answer by googling it......remember to import your new library.xml file to the new laptop as well!
    Here is how you keep that precious library data eg playlists, ratings etc....
    On your old laptop open iTunes - File - Library - Export Library and save the Library.xml file to somewhere you can easily transfer to your new laptop (eg a hard drive).
    Then copy your music to your new location.
    Open iTunes on your new laptop - Edit - Preferences - Advanced - Change Location
    Enter the path to the new location of your files.
    OK now here's the part I am confused about.....I think you de-select the keep iTunes organised and de-select copy music to iTunes options in the Advanced tab before closing it.
    You will not see the music listed in iTunes yet, don't worry,  we're getting to that next.
    Go to to File - Library - Import Library and import the Library.xml file you exported from your old laptop.
    Your new music files should then appear in iTunes with their info (ratings, play counts, playlists etc) still intact.
    Then you can change the advanced settings back to whatever you like.
    A side note and a Word of warnning - disaster resulted for me when I let the newest versison iTunes reorganise my files according to iTunes preferences - half the music had broken links after that including ones in my many playlists Boo hoo

  • Changed laptops, now iTunes can't find my music on my file server

    Ok, here's what happened when I recently switched laptops
    - I use iTunes to point to the music I store on my file server via a network share (WinXP)
    - I manually manage my iTunes folders
    - I took the \My Documents\My Music\iTunes directory from my old laptop and copied it to the same location to my new laptop
    - Installed iTunes 9 on the new laptop
    - When iTunes9 loaded on the new laptop ALMOST all music files in my library loaded with an exclamation point indicating that it couldn't locate the file (even though the file locations never changed)
    Ok... so here's the problem. I have over 20,000 songs with ratings information and if I just re-add all the files from the network share to the iTunes library again then it looks like I'd lose those ratings.
    The only way that I can see to fix things is to individually point iTunes to the network share location of the file for each file... YUCK!
    Is there a script or something I can write to tell it to find these files, or at least copy the ID3 tags to the duplicated songs that I re-added from the network share.
    Any help is GREATLY appreciated!

    Something is different in the paths to the files....hence itunes cannot find them.
    Sound like you know about the ITL file, which is why you copied it over.
    What you can do is look in its companion XML file to see the paths itunes thinks it should be using.
    If your XML is really big, open it using WordPad instead of NotePad. About the 10th line down is the itunes preference setting for the itunes folder:
    key>Music Folder</key><string>file://localhost/K:/iTunes%20Music/</string>
    On my system it's K:/iTunes Music
    The %20 just indicates a space.
    Then each song will have its own path
    <key>Location</key><string>file://localhost/K:/iTunes%20Music/Cowboy%20Junkies/The%20Trinity%20Session/07%2 0200%20More%20Miles.mp3</string>
    Now....can you see ANYTHING funny in one of those song paths?Is there an extra space, a different user name, anything different than what you could browse to in Windows Explorer?

  • T500: restart with 2nd monitor plugged in changes laptop monitor resolution

    If I plug my monitor in after the laptop starts, it works fine, I can extend desktop to the monitor.
    If I reboot with the monitor plugged in the laptop display resolution is reduced , messing up my icon layout.  Anyone know how to change this behavior? I am assuming this is probably because it assumes I am in a docking station or something?

  • [SOLVED] Can't change laptop screen brightness.

    I'm using GNOME and can't seem to change my laptop screen brightness. The slider in settings will work by changing the value in intel_backlight between 0 and 4882 but the actual brightness of the screen will not change.
    If I use the kernel line acpi_video = vendor all it does is create another interface called dell_backlight alongside intel_backlight which changes from 0 to 15 by changing the slider or pressing fn  + f5 and fn + f4.
    I have nouveau and intel graphics drivers installed and I'm running arch on a Dell XPS15 (L521x).
    Any help would be appreciated.
    EDIT: Solved this by adding the kernel parameter video.use_native_backlight=0

  • New to bash scripting; making script to change laptop CPU governor

    I've got an old laptop and I like to be able to change the governor between performance and ondemand depending on whether or not I've got the laptop plugged in. I'd really like to be able to do this from a shortcut on the desktop, so I decided to try making a bash script that used Zenity dialogs to accomplish this.
    I think it turned out pretty much how I'd like, however the error handling on getting the root password authenticated is pretty broken. I'm not sure how exactly I should go about it.. I think that the long timeout that occurs when you enter a wrong password for su is causing problems. Is there a better way of doing this? I don't use sudo, and I'd really prefer to avoid it and stick to using su if at all possible.
    #!/bin/bash
    #This script will supply a Zenity dialog with the option to change the laptop's governor.
    #It will use a Zenity dialog to acquire the root password from user for autorization to change the governor.
    #Set up some variables we will use.
    optionPerformance="FALSE"
    optionOndemand="FALSE"
    #Read the current state of the governor.
    currentGovernor=$(cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor)
    #Change the variables we previously set up to reflect current state of governor. This will be used to determine which option is pre-selected in the Zenity dialog we will create.
    if [ $currentGovernor = 'performance' ]
    then optionPerformance="TRUE"
    fi
    if [ $currentGovernor = 'ondemand' ]
    then opitonOndemand="TRUE"
    fi
    #Set up Zenity dialog which allows user to select the governor they want active. The currently active governor will be selected by default.
    #User's input will go to the wantedGovernor variable for future use.
    wantedGovernor=$(zenity --list --text "Select which governor you want to make active:" --radiolist --column "" --column "Options" $optionPerformance "performance" $optionOndemand "ondemand")
    #Check to see if user clicked Cancel button.
    if [ $? = 1 ]
    then exit 0
    fi
    #Did user select the already active profile? If so, simply report that and exit.
    if [ $wantedGovernor = $currentGovernor ]
    then
    newGovernor=$(cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor)
    zenity --info --text "Governor is already set to $newGovernor.\n\nNo changes were made."
    exit 0
    fi
    #Now that we know what the user wants, let's do it.
    #We will use cpupower to change the governor. This will require root privileges, so we will use Zenity to get the root password from user and pipe it into su. (Is this the best way?)
    zenity --title "Password for root:" --password | su -c "cpupower frequency-set -g $wantedGovernor"
    #Check to see if user clicked Cancel button.

    if [ ${PIPESTATUS[1]} = 1 ]
    then
    zenity --error --text "Incorrect root password.";
    exit 1
    fi
    #Now that we've made the change, let's check the current state of the governor again so that we can report it to the user and they can verify success.
    newGovernor=$(cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor)
    zenity --info --text "Governor is now set to $newGovernor."

    Thanks for the advice, Awebb. I looked into gksu but I didn't like how it offered to save the root password in gnome-keyring. I found an alternative, ktsuss, and decided to go with that instead.
    I'll post the finished script here, for anyone who is ever interested in such a thing:
    #!/bin/bash
    #This script will supply a Zenity dialog with the option to change the laptop's governor.

    if [ $wantedGovernor = $currentGovernor ]

    newGovernor=$(cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor)

  • Can I get playlists back if I've changed laptops and iTunes?

    II've just got a new laptop. The py transferred my music from one laptop to the other but I had to re download iTunes. Is there any way of getting my playlists back I made on my old laptop on iTunes or do I need to make them all again?

    If you copied over the whole iTunes folder then the playlists will be stored in the iTunes Library.itl file in the iTunes folder. Normally you would copy the entire folder into user's music on the new computer and it would be as if nothing had changed. If you added the media into a new library you wouldn't have got your playlists. If the library file is there, or can be retrieved from the old laptop the playlists can be recover from it. If you have any iPod or iOS devices that have your playlists there are ways to copy the data from them. If neither are possible then yes, you will have to start over.

  • After changing laptops, i am unable to add songs into my iPhone 4. The song appears in the library but not in the device. Help!

    I have not been able to add songs into my iPhone after switching computers. The mp3 format of these current songs are in the old laptop and i am unabe to retrieve them. In the new laptop, i am unable to add songs to my device, only to the iTunes library.

    Best route here is to focus initially solely on the iTunes Library.  Once it has all the Songs that you want, turn off iTunes Match, sign out of iTunes Store and restart the computer from cold.
    Moving to the iPhone would suggest a restore and fresh link to the library post the following steps.
    1.  Sign in to iTunes Store;
    2.  Turn on iTunes Match - allow 3-step process to run to completion;
    3.  Make secure backup of library;
    4.  Force iPhone in to restore mode - hold down 'power on/off' with 'home key' for 10 seconds
    5.  Attach iPhone via USB to computer and follow 'restore' instructions in iTunes
    6.  Once complete synchronise with library as required
    At this stage all required Songs should be on the iPhone - post iPhone back-up a good point to fully enable iTunes Match on the iPhone if required.

  • Cannot change laptop monitor resolution the normal (?) way

    Hi folks, I'm trying to get a resolution other than 800x600 working. I read that you just had to write this resolution in on the leftmost side of the appropriate line on the config file, and I did, but it isn't working. I'm using fluxbox, and so I don't have any GUI tools for setting the resolution, but changing the resolution by GUI tool didn't work in GNOME anyhow. I tried a number of different horizontal/vertical sync rates, although maybe I haven't tried the right one.
