Changing Machine Name

I just upgraded to Tiger using Archive & Install. Everything went smoothly.
I noticed the "Machine Name" portion of my bash shell prompt seems to be changing. Today it reads dpolsbylt1:~ stevedrenker$ (Syntax -> [machinename:~] username%).
Question: What should the machinename be? I have no idea where "dpolsbylt1" came from? I don't recall seeing this machinename in the bash prompt before.
I didn't find much on machinename searching the Apple Support pages or Googling it.
Steve

The computer's name is indeed set in the Sharing preferences pane. But that is not what bash uses in the default prompt. In a bash shell, type "echo $PS1" to see what your prompt is set to. Mine, unchanged from the default, is "\h:\w \u\$" which means "<hostname to first '.'>:<working directory> <username>$". My current host name is a truncated form of the DNS name assigned to my current IP address, and it changes if my IP changes. The original poster's host name is presumably assigned by the corporate LAN.

  • SBS 2011 - Need to change Machine name and IP address range

We had upgraded to SBS 2011 and new hardware 6 months ago, we have recently been aquired by a larger company and want us to comply with their machine naming conventions and change the IP address range to fit in with their corporate structure.  They
will be supplying us with a 2011/2012 Domain controller, this is to be added to our existing network as the primary DC supplying DNS, DHCP, WSUS
We use our SBS box for DNS, DHCP, Exchange, File server, Print server
How difficult is this going to be?  Is it actually possible, or do we need to wipe the SBS box and install from scratch?Any help on this matter would be appreciated

As said, you can't change the name of the server or the domain, but you can change the IP addresses.
The bad news is that you can't integrate SBS to a larger corporate network. SBS needs to be at the root domain of the forest and hold all FSMO roles, and it can't have any trusts.
If the corporate wants to bring in a DC of their own AD domain and wants all clients to be joined to that domain, you just can't use SBS anymore, it won't fit in. You need to inform your corporate IT about the situation, and you need to make a new plan.
You will need some kind of migration from SBS to standard products first before you can join to the corporate network structure.

  • OSD Rebuilds and policy with changing machine names/

I am using SCCM 2012 SP1 and I wanted to handle the situation where I need to keep rebuilding a small
group of machines where the machine name is is promptNed for via a HTA.
The nature of oursituation means that they could put in different names.
I am not sure yet the names will match a pattern so for the example we will assume they don't.
After the machine is built I want to be able to rebuilt the machine with the same OSD task sequence.
    (As available not mandatory).
Now from how I understand things if my target machine is based on Name then I could run into trobuble
and the best solution is to base it on a range of MAC (Ethernet) Addresses obosolite = false.
My objective here is to always have the machines match the collection and be able to get the
task sequence deployent when ever it is requried.
    Questions:
Are my assumptions correct will this approach always work? Is this the right way to handle this?
I am curious what others have tried?
In general if I have a fully built machine recieved policy and populated a collection targed once
again by a specific name - so lets say MachineA. Now lets say I take the machine off the domain.
Rename it then join the domain again as the MachineB.
Can I assume in this synario the machine will drop out of the collection because the name changed?
    Thanks,
    Ward

    Hi,
Thanks for the responses I was actually refering to SMS_R_System.Name = 'XXX'
However, great comments about the direct memebersip.
In regards to Active Directory membership. If I already have a computer object
in AD called 'MachineA' and then it is rebuilt with the same name it will
match up with the existing 'MachineA' record? So be in the same place, same
    AD membership etc?
Also I thought though something special seems to happen with a collection
based on director memebership with a OSD task sequence and u can only build it
    once? Am i mistaken here?
    Thanks,

  • I changed the name of my imac to reflect it's new location, but inadvertently, it unchecked the box to allow the administrative user account to administer the machine.  I am trying to reinstall with a time machine backup and am unable

I need a little help.  I changed the name of my imac to reflect it's new location, but inadvertently, when I saved the change, the system unchecked the "allow this account to administer the computer" so now I can't make any changes....  I tried to reinstall the OS, but it wants me to go online while installing and use my apple id, but this is not my iMAC, so I don't want to use my account.  Also, I am working in a building that will not allow me network access until I authenticate, which can't be done unless I open the browser first.  So I'm stuck at this point.  I can't even restore a time machine backup that I have because it gives the error message that the system encountered an error.  Any suggestions?

  • How do I change the name I have called my MacBook Air so I can add 11" and 13" into the title of whose computer this is for more clarity when I set up Time Machine and save to it with both computers?  Both are named with "my name and MacBook Air"

I'm still learning the whole Mac thing but these are great machines!  I purchased a MacBook Air 13" and then thought I should also get a MacBook Air 11" for travel.  When I set it up at the Apple store I told the assistant the exact same name for each machine, i.e., "my name and MacBook Air."  What I want to do is go back in and rename both of them adding the 11" and 13" designation to the name so that when I set up Time Machine or whatever else I know exactly which machine is what.  I'm sure it is very simple but I cannot seem to figure it out.  Help please. Thanks.

Go to System Preferences - Sharing and change the computer name there. You can also, optionally, change the name of your hard drive to further clarify the origin of your backups. Click once on the "Macintosh HD" on your desktop, then click its name to allow you to edit it.

  • I have changed the name and password for my Time Capsule and now the Time Machine will not connect

    Mac Book Pro
    1TB Time Capsule.
Yesterday I changed the name and password on my time capsule and also the name and password of the wifi network as I was having problems with the speed of the internet when using Safari on any of my devices (1 Macbook pro, 1 macbook air, 27" iMac, iPhone and iPad) all other internet services were working fine (email etc.) This seems to have solved the problem.
However, since then, my time machine back ups will not reconnect and there is no option for me to reconnect to the existing back up for my macbook pro.
When I enter the time machine preferences it shows as below that there are no back ups.
Then, when I go to select a drive to use which should be the MacBook under the Backup disks the only option is for me to Remove Disk...
So, my question is, how do I reconnect to an existing Time Machine back up for my MacBook pro as I really do not want to erase and start all over again.
Warning - In my naiveté, I did click on the MacBook in 'Available Disks' but I got the impression that it was about to start a whole new back up and not work with the existing one.
(And does anybody have an inkling as to why there was a problem with Safari on all my devices? I downloaded Google Chrome and that worked fine).

    Simply reset the Time Machine.
    See A4 here http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
You can then mount the TC disk in finder after you reboot the computer.
You should be able to reselect the TC disk and then it will say it is going to start a new backup.
Ignore this.. when the TM actually loads the TC disk it will discover the existing backup and continue the backup.. but it will give no hint until it actually starts that it won't start a new backup. you just have to believe it won't.. and mostly it works..
Please also install the widget A1 so you have some idea what TM is doing.

  • How to change host to just use "machine name" in URL

I've installed WebCenter Suite on a MS Windows machine. Due to the ip setup I also had to install the Loopback adapter to get things to work. Now everything seems to run, but the URLs always have my machine name plus the domain it's on. Since I need others to be able to access this installation, that's an issue and I need the host to just be my machine name instead of the machine name and full domain. For example, right now the wiki would be accessed:
    http://MyMachineName.mydomain.com/owc_wiki
I need the URLs (and the redirects that occur) to always work like:
    http://MyMachineName/owc_wiki
I guess the basic question is.. how do you change the "host" within a WebCenter installation?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi DDDDD(etc),
Check out the Oracle Application Server Administrator's Guide section 7.2 - it details the instructions.

  • Changing the name of time machine

Okay this is a preemptive, I have an external with three partitions, 1 is for bulk files that won't fit on my Laptop, 1 is for a backup of my PS3, 1 is for my Time Machine. I was wondering if I could change the name of my Time Machine drive as the one I have is not clear and I don't want my girlfriend to mess things up. I suspect that just changing it will mess the whole Time Machine process up so is there either a work around to confuse it that the old saves were indeed on the drive with the new name? I know the sparsebundle file is finicky, of course cause its a backup.
I wanted to ask before I did anything.
I have read this but not sure if I need to go down a similar route http://www.hardmac.com/blog/2008/05/29/how-i-saved-my-corrupted-time-machine-spa rsebundle-image
    Thanks in advance

If you're backing-up to a directly-attached, partitioned HD, all you have to do is change the name of the TM partition (not the drive itself).
Open a Finder window. If the partition doesn't show in it's sidebar, click Finder > Preferences > Sidebar in the menubar, then check the box to make external drives appear.
Back to the Finder window, control-click (right-click) the partition name and select the Rename option. This is one of the very few things you can rename that will not confuse TM. The new name will appear automatically in TM Preferences, for example, and backups will continue in the normal fashion.

  • MSA Conntrans fails after machine name change

    Hi
I have 5 remote laptops that have had their name changed and conntrans will no longer work.
When I ran  SELECT @@SERVERNAME  on database it retunred old name so I then ran
    sp_dropserver  'oldname'
    sp_addserver 'newname' , local
    Stop / start SQL server
SELECT @@SERVERNAME   now returns new name . However Conntrans still failing. Is the machine name embedded anywhere else ?
The mobile application does open it appears to be just the conntrans process that will not function.
Has anyone done this before ? Is it possible ?
    Best Regards M

    Hi Melita,
Please check note 1253027. This should solve your problem.

  • How to change the machine name for the admin server?

Hi, I've incorrectly set the machine name for my admin server. I now need to change this, but it's not editable (WLS 10.3.3).
Is there a way to edit configuration files to get it changed?
    Thanks
    Jason

Seems all I needed to do was edit config/config.xml (under my domain's path) and change the machine name manually (before shutting the admin server down).

  • How do I change device name after connecting to old machine?

That's right, I've gone ahead and connected my new power book to my old dual G5 in order to get the information onto the new machine.
Now, my new machine has my Dual G5 name as it's device name.
How can I change this so my power book has the correct name?

I wish that was it, but that only changes the name of the "Hard Drive", not the actual device name.
In other words, when browsing the network there's 2 computers with same name.
    Any other suggestions?

  • EPM 11.1.2.3 Install - machine name change problem

    Hi,
when I thought I had 99% completed an install a problem was discovered with the machine name, which was changed, is there any simple way to reinvoke the configuration options from the initial install, or to change the entries (config files / xml?) that will store the machine name originally configured??
    thanks for your input,
    Robert.

    Thanks John,
this is a single machine install, so before trashing and starting over I tried your suggested fix....
EAS now starts but when I try to open the cluster it errors (the cluster still showing the old machine name).
I have tried removing and re-adding but it still fails.
Looking in the logs the only error I see is; -
Severe Port 5300 is already in use
    Cause: another instance of the server is running on this machine;
Action shut down the server and then restart it.
I have used the stop scripts but this error does not clear.
Any last suggestions before I trash the install - on which - is this a simple matter with the RDBMS database table contents??
    thanks again,
    Robert.

  • Changing the name of the computer and the effect on Time Machine?

I have a new iMac and used my MacBook Pro's Time Machine backup to migrate over. Everything works fine and the entire system, settings, everything are just like on my MBP, plus whatever was needed to make the wireless kb and mouse work. So that's all fine.
The only thing is, the name of the computer is also DougMacBookPro.
I have a 1TB drive I freshly formatted for Time Machine backups just for this new machine. The old backup on a portable USB drive still exists for when my MBP comes back from repairs (portable Time Machine for travel).
Anyway, to my question. In the 1TB new Time Machine drive, the name of the backup folder is Backups.backupdb > DougMacBookPro.
I probably should have changed the name of the computer prior to doing my first Time Machine backup. And I can always start over since I only have half a day of backups anyway.
But my question is, what happens if I change my computer name now, after Time Machine has already started backing up? Will it rename the folder? Will it create a whole new folder, thus wasting all the space from the initial backup?
    Thanks,
    doug

Sorry. I see this question has been answered elsewhere and that TM is clever enough to automatically change the backup folder name.
    Thanks,
    doug

  • How to change All Human workflows urls in from machine name to IP Address

I've installed oracle BPM server and when I've deployed my bpm processes i've found that all human workflows URLs are maaped by machine name.
Hostname = "Machine Name" not the ip.
I know that i can go inside each task and replace the name with the ip but i have a lot of processes and a lot of human workflows.
is there any way to replace all machine name in these human workflows URLs with the server ip address. and I need the new deployments to be with the ip not machine name.

Wouldn't it be easier to add the machine name to the dns server or the servers hosts file?
What do you do if the IP of the host changes?
Have you looked into the deployment plan? That's the location to change such things when deploying applications.

  • How do I change the name of my time machine network?

I would like to change the name of the network I set up when I installed my time machine. I have just bought my iMac and am still getting to know it.  I hope there is a simple solution. Thanks

You are referring to the name of the Time Capsule or the network?
Open up /Applications/Utilities/Airport Utility > Select the time Capsule and reconfigure either the name or the network accordingly
