Changing  mono to stereo in FCP

I have an audio clip in FCP that is mono and I would like to make it into a stereo clip so that the sound matches the rest of the audio clips and comes out both channels.
I think I used to know how to do this using some sort of audio filter, but I may be confusing FCP with Premiere Pro in how it is done. I can't figure it out now.
(that's the trouble with using too many video editors- you start getting them confused!)
Can anyone please advise me how I can make a mono clip into a stereo clip in FCP?
Thanks for any advice.

Two ways to fake stereo: Put a copy of the clip on audio 2, or pan the track center. But it isn't true stereo.
You could also, on the duplicated tracks, EQ one to be bass-heavy and one to be treble heavy, and then play with the pan degree to "place" the bass or treble in the stereo spectrum. But it still isn't stereo.

  • Change Mixdown from Mono to Stereo

I'm sorry if this has come up previously but I coudn't find anything that exactly related to my situation.
First let me say I bought CS5.5 about two years ago and after trying it a few times, I found I did not like all the "missing functions like Group Tracks and the fact that it seemed to work slower than my old 1.5.
Recently I decided to give it another try and be  patient. I had to assembe two VOs with SFX and various production music beds. When I was happy with the mix, I was ready to do a mixdown...only to discover that my mixdown was in Mono. Mono? I tried to find where to convert it to stereo. After searching help and then this forum, it appears that there is no way to choose Strero or Momo....except apparently only when initially naming the Multitrack session. SAY IT AIN'T SO!!!    Does this mean I have to start all over with a new session file and spend all that time again?   If this is so, WHY would they remove the option to mixdown in Mono OR Stereo which seem so common sense and was an option in previous Audition versions.  I never understood software developers who seem to want to take away functions that worked.
Am I wrong? Is there any way to choose or change a mixdown in a session? I like choice. Choice is good.
    Cheers

For clarity's sake, a stereo track with audio on one side is still a stereo track, not a mono track.  So you're not really changing mono to stereo, you're just routing the active channel to fill both left and right sides.  There are a number of ways to do that.  I like #3 myself.

  • HT4589 How do I change the audio to dual mono from stereo when using Share to DVD in Final Cut 10.1?

How do I switch the audio to Dual Mono from Stereo when using Share in Final Cut Pro 10.1? Even though the audio is all in dual mono in the timeline, it lists it as stereo in the share box.

    Hi rationale1,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
The share to DVD settings in Final Cut Pro X use the Dolby Digital settings which are stereo for DVDs. So this can’t be done directly in Final Cut Pro X.
The link below will explain the Dolby Digital parameters and options in Compressor 4.   You may need to research a different DVD authoring software to achieve your desired result.
Dolby Digital - Compressor 4 User Manual
    http://help.apple.com/compressor/mac/4.1/#cpsrb71736a2
    Dolby Digital
The built-in Dolby Digital settings (in the Create Blu-ray and Create DVD destinations, as well as the built-in AC-3 and EC-3 audio settings) use the Dolby Digital transcoding format. This format encodes Dolby Digital (AC-3) and Dolby Digital Plus (EC-3) audio files that contain multiple audio channels, including 5.1 surround sound. You can also create custom settings that use the Dolby Digital transcoding format.
Note:  All files intended for video and audio DVD authoring must have a 48 kHz sample rate as required by the DVD specification.
DVD Video: Choose this option if you’re encoding for use in a DVD video authoring application.
DVD Audio: Choose this option if you’re encoding for use in a DVD audio authoring application.
Tip:  For stereo encoding, rates of 192 kbps and 224 kbps are typical and will produce good results. For Dolby Digital 5.1 encoding, a rate of 384 kbps is recommended. For 5.1 Dolby Digital Plus encoding, a rate of 192 kbps is recommended.

  • Exporting Stereo from FCP

    Hi all,
I'm currently struggling with the output of a music video for broadcast. I am ultimately looking to create an MPEG IMX PAL quicktime.
    I am running FCP 7.0.2.
The problem I am having is that every time I output from FCP my stereo sound (which I can see has very slightly different waveforms on each channel) is being turned into two mono channels.
My export settings are always stereo in the quicktime dialogue box and I have also tried the sequence being set to "channel grouped" and "stereo downmix" before export with no joy. I have also made sure that "downmix" is not selected in the audio mixer.
This is slightly frustrating as I've never had this problem before and I'm hoing it's something simple I'm overlooking.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance
    Alex

Thanks David, that seems to be what the problem was. I thought it might be something simple I was over looking.
Just to check for the future, does this always have to be the case for a track to be exported as stereo from FCP and there is no way of overriding it in the export?
I'm guessing that it is, but for my sanity I thought I'd best check.
    Thanks for your help

  • 2 mono and stereo

I have clips imported that say 2 mono and stereo. What is the difference? Why did some come in 2 mono and others stereo when they were all shot on same cam same settings? Interesting the 2 mono wave forms are to distinc channels which tells they too are stereo.
    Thanks!

When you captured, are you certain you had the audio capture settings the same for all clips? You can set it for Stereo, Ch 1 + Ch 2, Ch 1, Ch 2 or a Mono Mix.
And just because the waveforms look different on a pair of mono tracks, it doesn't automatically mean they're stereo. It could be just two distinct mono tracks from two sources, even if they were recorded at the same time.
You can easily change two mono tracks into a stereo pair by highlighting the clip in the Timeline, then go to Modify>Stereo Pair (Option l).

  • New prores presets - still just mono or stereo

I have just tried the new prores presets, to find out, if adobe changed the audio-export-limitation:
    Question:
Will the endcoder now be able to encode a, let’s say, XDCAM HD 422 Clip to Apple pro Res including the 4 (or more) mono audio tracks?
I was waiting for that for a long time.
    The answer is:
NO, it still is not possible to encode more than one single mono or stereo audio track. Just with MXF you have this choice (4 and more tracks), not with any of the other codecs.
I just don´t get it - what is it, that makes it impossible for adobe to solve this problem?
    Regards,
    Philipp

Unnecessary? Well... Depends pretty much of what you´re up to, doesn´t it? Video editing for Youtube: stereo is quite enough. But Broadcast?
Allways funny, when this topic comes up in the adobe world. You may call it "native-Philosophy", I think it´s not much better than apples fcpx-Philosphy (which is: it´s for the masses, not the pros): With dozens of codecs on board, there is only one way to export a clip with more than one single mono track (or stereo) - that is via the mxf-wrapper.

  • Are iPad and iPhone built in microphones mono or stereo?

    That's my question.

He assumed that you were hoping the mic would be stereo. As I said, though, for most use cases, a mono mic is just fine (or even better). What use do you have in mind. The only situation in which a stereo mic would be better is if you're going to record a stage or room full of musicians playing. If you're recording voice memos, or even recording yourself playing a single instrument, a stereo mic is unnecessary.
That said, we still haven't completely resolved whether the built-in mic is mono or stereo. The tech specs on apple.com don't specify, but I am 99.9% certain that it is mono.

  • Mono to stereo converter for 6600

    Hey guys,
Does anyone have any clue how to convert music output from mono to stereo in the nokia 6600?
    Thanks,
I need a reply soon plz!!!
    Thanx

It is a physical impossibility. If there is only one line out signal, you can't convert it to two with any converter (software or hardware).
If you really must have stereo output, then you need a new phone.

  • Converted mono to stereo

I converted a left channel recording from imovie hd to both channels using quicktime. Now the audio track is way to long even though the size is the same. Format: Linear PCM Channels: Mono Rate: 48 (the rate decreases the size but it doesn't matter). Any ideas how to keep the audio the same length.

I can't reproduce the problem with "Save as..." again, so the tracks switched from mono to stereo somewhere between the time I recorded them and by the time I was done tweaking their EQ and compression settings. I don't know how to delete or edit my discussion question above, sorry!

  • Changes don't arrive in FCP

    Hi all,
FCP Studio 2, Latest updates as of 11/27
This is one of those frustrating things that make me yell at the manual "You Lie!!"
    * I right click a clip in FCP and select Send To: Soundtrack Pro Audio Project File
    * Give it a proper name. Create the file as recommended by the manual (markers set)
    * Make the changes in Soundtrack. Lets say something obvious like soak it with Reverb.
    * Now, the manual says I just have to save the Soundtrack Project and VOILA! The changes are now there in FCP
    * Only - this just doesn't seem to be true. There are NO changes in FCP to the audio at all. It sounds exactly the same as it did before I sent it to SoundTrack.
What's the completely obvious and stupid thing I'm missing here?
    Thanks!

Two things . . . maybe. First, don't rename the sent clip. At least for now. This will help figure out where things are going wrong. Second, when you're doing your save, you should simply do a "save", not a "save as" or "save project as". When you do, you should be prompted with another winodw asking if you want to "include the source audio", or "reference it". I prefer to choose "include source audio". Once it finished writing the file (to the "sent" file, not a project) when you go back to FCP the audio clip will include "(sent)" next to the name.
    Hope this helps.

  • Mono vs. stereo, answer to random resets?

i read elsewhere on the forums that if you have mono recorded songs it causes you ipod to crash. this is the problem im currently having, where it crashes randomnly as its shuffling through songs.
so how can i determine which songs are mono so i can get rid of them and see if this fixes my problem?

Honestly, it doesn't matter whether the song is mono or stereo for whether it will play or not, just to how it sounds. Is it just certain songs or does it do it completely randomly? If it is certain songs, then you have to remove those songs and reformat them so they are in a proper format. If it isn't that particular ones, then you have a corrupt iPod Control file on your iPod and you'll have to do a reformat. If you don't want to lose all your music because you don't have proper backups of it, there are a few ways around it. But before I get into that, let me know what you discover about which songs it is.

  • Mono to stereo or combine audio

I have an iMovie that is an electronic white board. I recorded an audio file from my Nikon (so I would think it would be stereo) and added that to the whiteboard video. I've been told the audio is mono, but I don't know how to verify that or how to correct it. 1. How can I tell if the audio track is mono or stereo? 2. If it is mono can I convert it to stereo or play it as mono on both tracks to simulate stereo? Thanks.

    Hi
In iMovie You can not do any of it.
    But You can
    • From Event's - iPhoto Videos take it and drop it into a new Project
    • From Project You export it as QuickTime and as Audio only (.aiff)
    • This file You can open in an Audio/Sound-Editor as Audacity (free on Internet) or GarageBand ( might work ? )
And here in e.g. Audacity You can see if the Right and Left track are identical = MONO or have slight differences. I do this by invert one track and add it to the other - if it is silent - then the tracks are in Mono if not then You've got a Stereo Sound from start.
    Mono to Stereo = Impossibly
Mono out via Left and Right speaker - Just copy the audio in one track and paste it into the other - BUT still when You listen all will come from center. Simulated Stereo - I've never seen any working application that can produce this.
When done in Audacity - then Save (still as .aiff) and import this to Your Movie project.
Far from so easy as in FinalCut Pro. Where You just pan audio to the other canal.
    Yours Bengt W
