Changing my IP Address/MAC Address

Hello,
My ISP (Shaw) assigns dynamic IP addresses. I would like to be able to change it at anytime. I connect to the internet on my Mac wirelessly through my Airport Extreme Base Station.
I emailed Shaw, and they said unplugging the cable modem only resets IP address information in the modem, but does not change my IP address. This is part of the email they sent me; "IP addresses are also assigned based on your network cards unique mac address. If your network card driver or router has the option of manually changing its mac address you can randomly assign yourself a new ip address".
So, my question is, how do I change the MAC address on either my AEBS or my Mac?

So there is no way through AirPort Utility to change your WAN IP address? This is such a normal function through other routers (DLink, Netgear, Linksys) that I'm surprised it's not available. The Netgear web utility has two buttons: one to release the current connection and a second to connect.
I'm wondering if there's any way to "instruct" the AEBS to do this using Terminal and sending commands the the routers LAN IP address. I might have to return this product if I cannot control it properly.

well....it doesn't matter whether the MAC add is 00-14-BF-93-D2-66 or 00:14:BF:932:65 or any other format .. the most important thing is the hex decimal numbers are the same ... so not worry about it...

Help Please??? Personal web address & .Mac address

Hey folks-
I have set up my personal domain to be used with my .Mac address by utilizing my CNAME and such.
Now one problem I am having that I'm not sure can be solved....
Is there any way to set up my second site in iWeb to be the only site to utilize my personal domain name?
Here is what I am trying to do:
Site 1 is to play host to my family updates for our newborn.
Site 2 is to play host to my online portfolio for work and freelance.
Problem is I do not want professionals to know that I have a family site also.
I do not want to password protect either sites and I want the sites to work as such:
Site 1( family) to go as web.mac.com/username
Site 2(portfolio) to go as www.personaldomain.com
Can I do this with iWeb and .Mac? Thanks!

Unfortunately, when I do this if you type in web.mac.com/username it goes to the personal domain page first.
That's how it is is supposed to work. For your other site you have to use the url
http://web.mac.com/username/sitename
The only way to totally separate them would be buy another account or manually put your other site in iDisk/Sites. It will then have the url http://homepage.mac.com/username/sitename (not sure all features will work there).

Changing MAC Address

Recently i have been trying to change my Router's MAC Address. I have a WRT54g v.3. I have done it before where i had unplugged the internet cable going from the wall to the modem. I saw the change on the 192.168.1.1 status page. And i noticed with a proxy and the new changed MAC address i was able to get into gaming servers i hadn't been able to before because my IP was banned.
Now when i try to change my MAC address, it doesn't seem to change on the router stautus page like it did once before. I'm sure that it's possible to concel my identity of my old IP and get a new IP (through a proxy), many people do this for security reasons so i'm hoping linksys products can offer some kind of security by doing this.

Your MAC is "stuck" to that router, you need to spoof it. Google it.

Windows Network Load Balancing - Virtual MAC Address

I have environment that running 2 Exchange 2010 server with CASHT and join windows network load balancing as a node.
My question is,
If NLB service is restart, is it virtual MAC Address for NLB will change to new virtual MAC Address?

The NLB work mechanism will not change whether what higher application we used and I am not very familiar with Exchange NLB architecture, may the following KB and article
may help you.
When you use the unicast method, all cluster hosts share an identical unicast MAC address. Network Load Balancing overwrites the original MAC address of the cluster adapter
with the unicast MAC address that is assigned to all the cluster hosts.

Chaning Apple ID for iTunes to .Mac address

I have an iTunes account that I created back in 2003 when I got my 3rd Generation iPod, and since then the whole family has used the account. It is at my AOL e-mail address, but I'm trying to completely get rid of that e-mail address because I rarely use AOL anymore. In iTunes, it lets you change your e-mail address, but if I try to change it to my .Mac address, it states that I cannot change a current account to a .Mac e-mail address, but instead I can sign in with the .Mac e-mail address instead as its own account. Is there any way I can either get around this obstacle or transfer all of my purchased music to a new account, so I don't have to worry about two accounts in the future, (i.e. what computers are authorized with what account; having to authorize twice for music purchased from today on with my .Mac address)? Thanks a bunch for any help!

LAN and WAN share the same MAC address -- could this be a security issue?

When I bought the AEBS(n), I was a bit surprised to see only one ethernet MAC address listed (on bottom of unit, or was it in config utility?), in addition to wireless MAC. My main router has two ethernet MACs.
So last nite, I investigated. I confirmed my suspicion that both the WAN port and the LAN ports share the same MAC address! My setup has the AEBS WAN port plugged into my home LAN's main router, and a Linux machine plugged into a LAN port of the AEBS.

10.0.1.1 on the LAN side of AEBS and 192.168.1.21 on the WAN side of the AEBS both use the same MAC address, 00:16:CB:C4:30:A6.
I tried to provoke some leakage between the two sides (for example with broadcast packets), but haven't been able to do it so yet. Perhaps the switch in front of the eth MAC has enough smarts to keep the two subnets separate? Still it sort of worries me, if I used the AEBS as my only router, that both WAN and LAN go thru the same ethernet MAC (same h/w). I browsed here but found no discussion on this.

for ethernet and wireless, they are physically
different networks. In the case of the WAN/LAN, both
are ethernet-type networks but are physically
distinct (this is the purpose of a router like the
AEBS), so having the same MAC address on both sides
won't cause any sort of collision nor should it be
possible to leak across networks. MAC addresses can't
be used for routing beyond the physical network.
If it is indeed two different NICs sharing a single MAC, then indeed it is not an issue as you would never want to connect these two NICs together. But is it really two NICs?
My worry is that these two subnets are on the same physical network, with some magic going on to keep them separate anyway. Do we have some picture of AEBS internals? Maybe that would answer the question...

Like the IP addresses, MAC addresses have to be unique for each network adapter, no matter whether it's a physical or virtual adapter.

We're running ACE SM and seeing all the VIP addresses, NAT addresses and alias addresses in the ARP table below being assigned the same virtual MAC address. How then would a packet find the correct source/destination if all these MAC addresses are the same?

ACE uses the concept of Virtual Mac Addresses , which are the addresses used for VIP addresses, NAT addresses (dynamic and static), and alias addresses These will all always use a MAC address in the following form 00.0b.fc.fe.1b.
If you are using single ACE SM in a cat6k box, and you are seeing duplicate MAC, its normal. Cat6k Supervisor is L2 Adjacent with ACE, Any traffic received by Supervisor in VLAN 810 will be sent to ACE and then ACE will determine which VIP that packet is going to.
Real Problem will come when you are using multiple ACE modules in Same Chassis or you are doing Chassis to Chassis ACE Redundancy. In such situation your Cat6k Switch will have duplicate MAC entries.
To avoid this, you need to keep your Contexts in diffrent context groups in each Module i.e something like this

Mac Address Tracing - CatOS

I have noticed a lot of bad traffic coming from one particular computer on the network. Normally not a big deal, I found the MAC Address in my DHCP Table, logged into a switch, did a 'sh mac-address-table address <mac address>', found what port it was connected to (it was another switch), I then did a 'sh cdp neighbor detail' got the ip address, telneted to that switch, rinsed and repeated... until I hit a switch that had CatOS.
My question is how do I do this same type of thing on CatOS? I know how to get everything else except which port it is on like the 'sh mac-address-table address <mac address>' command gives me.

just type show cam it will clearly tell where the mac-address is residing.
eg. lets say that 6509--->2950---->(my pc)
in 6509 type show cam
it show some thing like this...

I need to fill out template with the Machine Name, IP Address, MAC address, Netmask,
IPSubnet,Gateway,DefaultIPGateway,Preferred DNS,DNSHostName,Preferred WINS
I think you get the idea. However, I am having trouble just getting the Primary IP, MAC, etc.
So far, I have this:

Thanks for all your help.
I found that the first Nic did not neccessarely use what I call the primary IP. That is the IP that is returned when I Ping the server.
Many of the servers I am looking at have multiple Nic's and Multiple IP's.
I wound up using $nic = @(gwmi ....) and a Switch statement to find the right Nic with the Right IP. Like this:

I need to change the MAC Address for Airport on MacBook

I have a specific need to change my son's Airport MAC address as his school requires the use of USB network cards that aren't compatible with MACs. These cards are needed because the school's router uses MAC address filtering.
Before we upgraded his Mac to Snow Leopard, we were able to change the MAC address to the MAC address of the useless dongal the school supplied. We basically created an AppleScript program that ran the "sudo ifconfig en1 ether xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx" and all was good.
This command no longer works for changing the MAC address. We tried it as root user as well and by typing it into the terminal window as root. After running the command, we can run "ifconfig en1" and it does display the new mac address but when we turn the airport on and try to connect, it just hangs and won't connect.
Our other non-Snow Leopard still works fine after running the commands so I'm guessing Apple disabled this functionality. It's hardly a security issue by being able to change your mac addres.
Is there a new way to accomplish this? I've searched everywhere.

Would an easier solution be to provide the school's IT admin with your mac address and have it added? If they can add a block of mac addresses for the usb dongles, they can add more for machines that cannot use the dongle.
Also: "It's hardly a security issue by being able to change your mac address."
While it may not be a security issue for your machine, it is a security for the school network who is using mac address filtering as hopefully only one part of their wireless security.

Create a new Apple ID, use that and lose all the apps I've purhcased with it (a fairly substantial amount)
Somehow Migrate these purchases over to a new Apple ID
Apple let me change the primary ID for the account
Anyone else ran into this before?
I've tried accessing the mail through a mail application using the correct server information, and trying both the old 6 character password and the one I had to change it too after they updated the security guidelines - neither work.
Help would be greatly appreciated as I can see more services down the line not working without the address being verified!

To change the iCloud ID you have to go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account, provide the password for the old ID when prompted to turn off Find My iDevice, then sign back in with the ID you wish to use. When you do this you may find that the password for your old ID isn't accepted. If this should happen, and if your old ID is an earlier version of your current ID, you need to temporarily recreate your old ID by going to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID. Click edit next to the primary email account, change it back to your old email address and save the change. Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address. You should not need to verify the old email address. You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iDevice on your device, even though it prompts you for the password for your old account ID. Then save any photo stream photos that you wish to keep to your camera roll. When finished go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud). Next, go back to https://appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address and iCloud ID name back to the way it was. Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign in with your current iCloud ID and password.

Can't change MAC address of my wireless card on Windows XP

I have recently bought a notebook, Lenovo IdeaPad G550L (I haven't found section for the G series here on the forum) and would like to use its WiFi adapter (BCM4310 according to Everest) with explicitly changed MAC address. I installed the recommended driver, available from Lenovo's website, version 5.10.38.14. I tried the common way to change the MAC address, went to Control Panel -> Network Interfaces -> Broadcom Wireless Network Adapter -> Configure... -> Advanced -> Locally administered MAC address, and changed it to a different address (without ":" or any separator characters). Unfortunately this common solution won't work at all. Although, no error messages are produced when changing it (so it seems successful) my wireless router shows me the original MAC address of my integrated wifi card. Tried to restart my computer, my router, everything.
* Tried different drivers, downloaded a driver from HP which had a separate wireless configurator, Broadcom Wireless Utility. It worked like the driver from Lenovo (except this one hasn't got the utility), but I was still unable to change my MAC address.
* Tried a different driver from SoftPedia, version 5.10.79.14 (this is newer than Lenovo's), it didn't work either.
* Tried Nathan True's MACShift utility. It seemed to change the MAC address, but my router showed the original, so it didn't.
* Tried to look for official Broadcom drivers on www.broadcom.com but found nothing for BCM4310.
* Finally, I booted my alternative OS, the latest Ubuntu Linux, and used the kernel driver b43 for my wireless adapter. I tried to change my MAC address using the command ifconfig wlan0 hw ether .... and connected to my network. It worked, my router showed the changed MAC so the hardware (or the firmware) is capable of doing this by the right driver/firmware.
I tried to address Broadcom with the issue, sent them a letter like this post they replied that they are not competent, they wrote the following (I guess this was an automatically generated message because it got back in 10 seconds ) from [email protected]:
"As the chipset supplier, Broadcom provides driver support to our customers - the manufacturers of wireless devices - that ultimately provide products to end customers, such as wireless LAN vendors, cable modem vendors, and notebook providers. It is up to these manufacturers to provide product-specific drivers and software support to their end customers. Please contact the manufacturer of your wireless device for their current drivers"
Then I addressed Lenovo with the problem, their answer:
"Dear ******,
Thank you for contacting Lenovo, the makers of ThinkPad and ThinkCentre products. As I understand, you have purchased a Lenovo IdeaPad G550L and would like to use its WiFi adapter (BCM4310 according to Everest) with explicitly change MAC address.and you would like to know is there an official driver for Windows XP that allows you this basic feature like b43 in Linux. So this means I should call them and spend extra money for phone bill of international calls because of their fault of providing a basic feature that is to be expected from every single wireless card in the market. Should I believe that a guide over the phone is more efficient than a step-by-step solution or a link to an alternative driver? I'm getting kind of disappointed. At least they have understood (or copy-pasted) my problem, dutch comfort though.
Any ideas? Anyone experienced the same problem and solved it? Is there an official (or even unofficial) driver for this device for Windows XP that allows me this basic feature (like b43 in Linux)?

Yes, I have posted this thread to different forums after I realized that Lenovo "customer care" is not likely to help me out and even wirelessforums.org members couldn't come up with any ideas for days, that's why. I have already written that helper applications like SMAC (or etherchange or macshift) don't work, because they do the same thing in the system as I change it in the driver panel, so they use the same method which simply does not work.
Locked? Definitely not. If yes, why can I change the MAC of my adapter under Ubuntu Linux using b43 open-source driver if it's really locked? Or you mean it's locked from software, because Lenovo or Broadcom didn't want their users to change their MACs or they just forgot to release a fully-functional driver? Well, then I would like to have a driver in which it's not locked, because this is a basic feature of my adapter of which the hardware is capable.
I have already contacted Broadcom, see their (automatically-generated) answer in my initial post, but I will try to do that again with more foresight.
