  • Change NetBIOS name in 10.6 Server

    I'm setting up  a new server to replace my PowerMac G5 Leopard server, just got a Mac Pro so I put 10.6 server on there for file sharing services. I cannot figure how to change the NetBIOS name however. When i go into System Prefs and try to change it that way, it points me to Server Admin, but I can't figure out where to change it. It's currently at new-host.local, and I would like to change it to Lambda.local. How do I go about doing this? Thanks

    Hi,
    We can use the active directory rename tools to rename domain NetBIOS name. But it is a complex and risky process.
    For more information about how to use random.exe to rename domain name, please refer to the following article:

    Besides, renaming of the NetBIOS domain name is not supported in any version of Exchange Server.

  • Changing Workgroup name by pushing registry setting

    I'm looking for an registry key or adm file or windows 2000 group policy
    sothat i can change the PC's workgroup name (OS = Windows 2000) by means
    of Zfd 3.2.
    I tried finding the setting by using Snapshot, but no result

    > I tried finding the setting by using Snapshot, but no result
    A workgroup is not only a name, it is a peer-to-peer network
    and all members must hold information about one another.
    See this for instance:
    http://tinyurl.com/3zzm2
    Scroll down to:
    "Peer-to-peer Network Environments"
    All Workgoup information is stored in the local SAM-database.
    You can not snapshot that.
    AFAIK you can only change Workgroup manually.

  • VPN changes NetBIOS name

    Every time I VPN into work using the built in client my iMac's NetBios name gets changed. To VPN-## The name I gave it still exists under System Prefs -> Network ->Eithernet ->Adavanced -> WINS but there's a not to the side that says "VPN-## is currently being used" and the Windows box sees "VPN-##" not the name I gave it. A restart seems to fix the problem but as soon as I VPN in it happens again. As a side note the prompt in my bash shell also changes from MyName: to vpn-##: although System Prefs -> Sharing still has the computer name set to MyName
    Thanks for any help.

    The term "netbios" is normally associated with Windows computers.  Where on a Mac do you see anything described as a "netbios name"?

  • Lost local network computers in finder and unable to change workgroup

    On my G5, iMac works fine, both OS X10.5.5. After a update from Mac, I think it was Safari, iTunes, and a Security Update, I rebooted the computer and now can no longer view local windows network computers.
    I checked WINS in Network settings and my NetBIOS name is grayed out, in the workgroup box, it is empty, I click on the drop down and my workgroup name is there I select it but it is not saved. Didn't make a difference.
    I was able to use Go in Finder, Connect to Server and put in "smb:// computer name or share" and connect no problem and the computer shows up in finder, but only the one I typed in.
    If I click Go in Finder, Connect to Server, then choose Browse, it dumps me back to Finder Network view and of course none of the Windows shares or computers show except the one I put in with SMB://
    I ran Disk Utility Repair Permissions, rebooted to no avail.
    Anyone have an idea what went wrong and can point me in the right directions to get the Windows Computers back in Finder?
    Thanks,
    Bill...

    Ok This is what I did in trying to fix my problem and it seem to work, although I have yet to turn the G5 off or reboot yet and was able to get Windows shares showing back up.
    System Preferences, Network.- Location: First choose Duplicate Services of Automatic, then I renamed Automatic to my workgroup name ( although I don't think name is important).
    Then chose the Advance button and under TCP/IP changed Configure IPv4 to Using DHCP with manual address. I put in a static address (192.168.1.200) that was out of the range that the router would give out (my router range for DHCP is 192.168.1.5 to 192.168.1.100).
    Then clicked WINS and selected my workgroup name, closed the windows and saved... Worked right off the bat in finder!
    Don't know the Why's or How Come's but it worked and that is all I needed! Maybe some one could explain?

  • Trouble with DNS/NetBIOS name resolution over VPN

    I’ve got one for the DNS/WINS gurus out there who are also familiar with VPN connections.
    We have a VPN setup on our Mikrotik RouterBoard 532 for a number of employees running Windows 7 Pro laptops. Unfortunately the Mikrotik is maintained by our ISP so I don’t have access to it, but I can call them to make changes. Anyhow, I do not believe it
    is a problem with the Mikrotik.
    The problem is with resolving NetBIOS names (UNC paths, drive letters, etc…) over the VPN from remote locations, and ONLY with laptops joined to our
    abc.local domain. If I use my home PC or disjoin the domain laptop from the
    abc.local domain and return it to WORKGROUP, keeping the same Windows VPN client settings, I am able to resolve paths just fine.
    For example, when I type \\server1 from Start>Run, it fails and tells me “server1 is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource.” Using the FQDN is no problem at all, which makes me believe the problem is with NetBIOS resolution
    and takes me to the WINS servers on the network.
    The VPN hands out primary and secondary WINS servers, and they appear to be configured correctly in our Server 2003/2008/2012 environment. When I run
    nbtstat –A IPAddressOfLaptop from a WINS server it resolves the laptop, and the same command from the laptop looking to the server resolves OK too.
    What’s strange is that when I ping “server1” I get a valid response from server1.abc.local, as expected, but for some reason I still can’t browse to it from start>Run… “\\server1”.
    The DNS suffix abc.local is in the “DNS suffix or this connection” field in the properties of the VPN client since the Mikrotik VPN is unable to deal this to clients.
    I have ruled out Group Policy as the culprit because even after removing any group policy from applying to one of the laptops the result was the same.
    I’ve used every resource and tool that I could to try and find where the problem lies and can’t seem to solve it. Everything looks properly configured.
    I would greatly appreciate some assistance!

    When you run an ipconfig /all, do you see the WINS server addresses being provided? How about the connection specific suffix for the domain, domain.local (or whatever it is called)?
    I assume that you are using the Microtik as the VPN server and you are not using AD accounts for authentication. I would highly suggest to do that, otherwise, there will be a mismatch.
    What VPN client is being used?
    What is offering DHCP, a Windows Server or the Microtik?
    FYI, using NetBIOS connection method, such as \\server1, will use the current logged on account for authentication. If the VPN credentials are not AD credentials, but the VPN client is setting the logged on credentials account
    (some of them do that), then it will cause issues.
    From what I see that NetBIOS is not being blocked, so that doesn't appear to be an issue, but it's coming down to credentials. Maybe in the mapped drive you can preset the credentials, and might be one way around it.

  • WRT1900AC and its' NETBIOS name...

    I have third party backup software that recognizes NETBIOS names and it tells me that my WRT1900AC Router is broadcasting "WORKGROUP" on my local network in addtion to the name my Windows client computers use.  I want all my computers/wire connected devices to use the same NETBIOS name when they are talking on my wired network, and to be able to include the disk attached to the router in that network so that things are handled efficiently and consistently by XP, Vista, and Win7 clients.  I can't find a way to change it using the web interface I have access to which is the "out of the box" 192.168.0.1/.... address (Which my 64 bit Windows IE 11 based Norton security software thinks has an "expired certificate" even though the firmware is up to date!)  I think I used to be able to do it on an older Linksys E3000 that eventually died, but its' support for a USB attached disk was really slow compared to the WRT1900AC's eSata connection, so I did not try to host backups there and went around my network with an eSata enclosure and manually backed up each computer (a **bleep**) but the only way to be efficient.  My Ethernet wiring is at 1000 mbps so I am getting reasonable performance now but still having configuration issues....

    NO this is happening from within the router itself. Windows (and other OS's) can "see" which workgroups are on the network and will display them, regardless of weather they are accessible (permissions etc)
    I have a network consisting of multiple Linux machines on my home network under my own unique workgroup name.  I don't have ANY Microsoft or Apple (except "iPhone's") on this network.  The only reason I'm running a windows (smb) network and not NFS, is because occasionaly people bring me their Windows machines for repair or upgrade etc, and it's handy to be able to access windows tools I store on my FreeNAS server from the machines I'm working on - It's easy to get Linux talking to propriotry systems, but NOT the other way around  (Asan example, as far as I'm aware, Windows can't do NFS.)
    So it's like this, I upgraded my router to the new WRT 1900AC, and now, for the first ime ever, I have not only my own unique workgroup name, but also a separate "NEW" workgroup, name d "WORKGROUP" which only the WRT shows up in.
    Both of my previous routers were able to be set to "Show Up" on a particular workgroup by changing to that name within the routers settings. But I can't find how/where to do this within the WRT.
    The router, whilst responsible for the obvious - routing and network access etc - is still also another network device which can be accessed to a degree from a particular workgroup (provided it''s nmame has been set)  ...For example:

  • Computer name and workgroup

    Just got a used Apple with Tiger. It has a system name and workgroup set up, but how can I rename thwe computer and change the workgroup name?

    I went to the website recommended. It directed me to go to Applications>Utilities>Directory Access. It said I should check on the padlock to unlock, but there is no padlock. It said to check off SMB if it is not already checked off, but I could not find SMB. In the plug-ins list, there was SMB.daplug, and it had a checkmark next to it. The next instruction said to select SMB, then click Configure, but there is no Configure button anywhere. The MAC is a Power MAC G4, with Tiger 10.4.

  • Netbios Name query injected into socket connect.

    Folks,
    I have a java application which communicates to a networking device via sockets.
    It was written with J2SE 1.4, I have ported it to 1.5/5.0.
    When issuing a socket connect, I observe that the application/JRE is issuing
    several Netbios Name queries to the device.
    The device is responding with ICMP Destination unreachable.
    After 3 Name queries, the socket connect continues as before (1.4) and the app proceeds as before.
    The problem is that the name queries has introduced a 9 second delay to each connect to the appliance and the app now appears unresponsive.
    This did not happen with JRE1.4. I have made no changes to the socket code.
    Is there a way to stop the name queries?
    The getHostName in the JRE connect code below is causing the name queries.
    java.net.SocksSocketImpl
        protected void connect(SocketAddress endpoint, int timeout) throws IOException {
         SecurityManager security = System.getSecurityManager();
         if (endpoint == null || !(endpoint instanceof InetSocketAddress))
             throw new IllegalArgumentException("Unsupported address type");
         InetSocketAddress epoint = (InetSocketAddress) endpoint;
         if (security != null) {
             if (epoint.isUnresolved())
              security.checkConnect(epoint.getHostName(),
                              epoint.getPort());
             else
              security.checkConnect(epoint.getAddress().getHostAddress(),
                              epoint.getPort());
         if (server == null) {
             // This is the general case
             // server is not null only when the socket was created with a
             // specified proxy in which case it does bypass the ProxySelector
             ProxySelector sel = (ProxySelector)
              java.security.AccessController.doPrivileged(
                  new java.security.PrivilegedAction() {
                   public Object run() {
                       return ProxySelector.getDefault();
             if (sel == null) {
               * No default proxySelector --> direct connection
              super.connect(epoint, timeout);
              return;
             URI uri = null;
    --->>>>>>>> String host = epoint.getHostName();
             // IPv6 litteral?
             if (epoint.getAddress() instanceof Inet6Address &&
              (!host.startsWith("[")) && (host.indexOf(":") >= 0)) {
              host = "[" + host + "]";
             }Mauro Zallocco.

    The resolution of this is to turn off the new proxy server feature in JRE1.5.
    You do this by informing the jre that you do not have a default proxy server.
    This is done with the following lines of code placed somewhere in you application:
    import java.net.ProxySelector;
    ProxySelector.setDefault(null);
    With this, the NetBIOS name queries do not emanate, and we revert back to the 1.4 behavior.
    Mauro Zallocco.

  • Accessing Host Content through VirutalBox via NETBIOS Name?

    Hi,
    I've got Arch Linux installed in VirtualBox and I want to access local resources like Apache installed on my host (Windows 7). Ideally want I to achieve is to be able to access resources via my laptops NETBIOS name, this is because I move around a lot and accessing via IP will be awkward as it will change depending on location i.e. My home network uses the local IP of 192.168.x.x where as another location use 10.60.x.x etc.
    Due to NETBIOS being a Windows related service, would it be possible to do this in Arch Linux? I also use Windows XP Mode for testing and accessing Apache via NETBIOS works fine, but obviously that's because it Windows!
    Thanks,
    James

    Two things.
    First, you might want to look into Avahi
    Second:  How is your networking on the Virtual machine set up?  If it uses NAT, there is a virtual network between the host and the guest.  That network is independent from the host's physical network to the outside world.  As such the address assigned the guest, and the address of the gateway it uses (the other end of the virtual network on the host) do not change.  What does change is the NAT configuration that allows the host to route data from its real, physical network to the virtual network.
    On the other hand, if you using a bridged network, that means the guest machine receives its address from the same physical DHCP server as does the host.  This would require something like Avahi.

  • Macs keep assuming Netbios names causing Windows computers to get error

    Hello,
    We have a mixed Windows and Mac environment using DHCP and occasionally a Windows XP machine will give a error: "A duplicate name exists on the network" and when when we trace that name to an IP, we end up at a Mac which has somehow taken the PCs Netbios name. We unplug the Mac for a minute, IPCONFIG /Release /Renew on the PC and then plug the Mac back in and all is well. Has anyone else encountered this and is there a known solution? I have Googled this matter extensively with no luck.
    Many thanks for your input-
    Rob

    Thank you for the prompt and insightful reply. We have not assigned NETBIOS names to the Macs yet - I had that as part of our setup a few years ago but it seemed that the NETBIOS names would not stay and would get change arbitrarily to a Windows computer's name usually but sometimes to another Macs assigned NETBIOS when a new DHCP lease was obtained. That was several years ago so perhaps that problem existed but only for that time. I will assign NETBIOS names to all of the Macs and see if that solves our issue. Thanks again.
