Changing network name question

How do I change the name of my internet network?

You would use the AirPort Utility to change the AirPort's Network Name.
To do this with version 6.x of the AirPort Utility:
AirPort Utility > Select the AirPort > Edit > Wireless tab > Wireless Network Name

  • Want to change network name.... and other.

Ok, Hi all.... so new to Apple and just a novice computer user... just purchased a macbook pro and a airport extreme wireless N router ( finally after 5 years of dial up)... so my questions is/are... first my network is named with my first and last name... i don't really want this, so how do I rename my own network??? Also, I have a 5 years old pc gave to my sister... were going to set it up to detect my wireless network... will having a pc on a network along with a mac compromise my macs security by having a microsoft system sharing the network??? i do not want to set myself up for something i will regret later.
As for changing the network name... i don't want anyone within distance or diving by to see my name , first and last, on my network.. know what i mean.
So anyone have any help for me o how to change this???
    Thanks,M.

Me too, please. I was able to change a Linksys network by going to Linksys support and having them walk me through it. But those steps don't work on the Apple network. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

  • Change Network Name of Wireless Printer

We have several Officejet Pro 8600 in our building.  We are printing from them wirelessly, and need to change the name of the printers so that we know which is which.  How can I change the network name of a printer?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

You can RIGHT CLICK on the printer in DEVICES AND PRINTERS. It will have a RENAME tab that you can choose to change the name.
You will have to do that on EACH COMPUTER in the building. The printer itself has a HOST name, and that is the NETWORK name.
That's just about the only way you could change the name of the printers.
    I hope this helps.

  • Changing Network Name

I'm just getting started with Airport Extreme. I have 3 questions:
    1) The base station does not have an on/off switch. It's OK to leave it on all the time?
    2) My set up yielded two networks, my network and one guest network. Do I really need a guest network, if it is just me and my wife using the network? How do I eliminate the guest network?
3)I created these two networks using my real name, not realizing that they would show up as such when people scan for wi-fi access in my vicinity. How do I change my network name without messing up my set up?
    thanks
    mp

    1) The base station does not have an on/off switch. It's OK to leave it on all the time?
Yes, it was designed to operate 24 x 7.
    2) My set up yielded two networks, my network and one guest network. Do I really need a guest network, if it is just me and my wife using the network? How do I eliminate the guest network?
No, the guest network would be totally optional. You decision to use it should be dependent on your networking requirements. You can safely disable it without any affect. To disable it, you would need to use the AirPort Utility. (ref: AirPort Utility > Select the AirPort Extreme > Manual Setup > AirPort > Guest Network > Enable guest network (not checked))
3)I created these two networks using my real name, not realizing that they would show up as such when people scan for wi-fi access in my vicinity. How do I change my network name without messing up my set up?
Again, you would use the AirPort Utility to do this. (ref: AirPort Utility > Select the AirPort Extreme > Manual Setup > AirPort > Wireless > Wireless Network Name)

  • MFP 1217nfw How to Change Network Name and Password When You Buy a New Routers

I have an MFP 1217nfw.  It was working fine wirelessly.  Then my router stopped working properly.  I bought a new router and easily set up my computers, iPad and iPhones to work with it.  But I don't know how to change the printer set up so that it will see and connect to the new router (i.e., change the network name and password that the printer uses to connect).  Anyone know how to do this without having to uninstall and reinstall the printer as if it were fresh out of the box?  Thanks for your help.

  • How to change network name on BT Hub 2.0?

    Hi folks,
I've just set up my Broadband with BT here in the UK and all is well.
However, how do i change the network name from the default BThomehub?
I had a belkin router prior to this and i could change it easily by going into the routers home page but in the BT home page it shows the name of the hub/router but i can't change it?
    Thanks.

You need to log into the home hub manager and select "settings"
    Then select "advanced settings"
Then choose "Wireless" where you can change the Wireless name/SSID
    Hope that helps.

  • Changed network name and now e-print e-mail address doesn't work

I have a 6500A Plus Deskjet.  I have an hpconnected account and changed my e-print e-mail address to something I would remember.  Then I changed the name of my network.  I have to get a new claim code ..... I enter it and when I try to choose my e-print addrss, it says that it is already been taken.  I was on the hp site within a half an hour of changing my network name.

    Hi rfmal1,
Thank you for joining the HP Support Forums.  I understand that you needed to set up the ePrint feature of your Officejet 6500A after changing the name of your network.
Your previous ePrint email address will not be available, once an ePrint email address has been used it is no longer available to be claimed again. I am sorry if this has caused any inconvenience.

  • How to change Network Name

My Airport Express network name needs to be changed. It has my full name as the account for everyone to see. How can I change it?

You use AirPort Admin Utility to change the network name (or SSID) used by your AirPort Express (AX).

  • Change network name

When I set ip my Airport Extreme I created two network names (one primary and a guest network) using my full first and last names. For security and privacy issues I would like to remove the guest network account and change my primary account to something more secure.
    Any ideas?
    Thank you, AEL71

Just open the airport utility.. go to the edit tab. Go to the wireless tab and change the name.
There is nothing particularly different to doing it. But you can simply do a reset and start over as an alternative.

  • Will changing Network name affect Time-capsule back up function

I finally managed to set up my time capsule with Mac support help. I didn't realize until this morning that I didn't want my network name to be my full name. I think I can change the network name easily enough through the airport function. But will this screw up my Time Capsule's attempts to update my files? Do I need to go into Time Capsule and change the network somewhere, or is the program intuative and will do it automatically?

    Welcome to the discussions!
Changing the network name will not affect your backups.
You might want to reconfirm the setup for your backups as follows:
Open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock)
    Open Time Machine
    Click Select Disk
Click your Time Capsule disk to highlight it
    Click Use for Backups

  • Changing Network name on Wifi....

    Hi,
I typed in the wrong network name and it saved it but now needs a password to sign on to the internet...How can I change it? I tried resetting, restoring and erasing data and settings but nothing works...
I need the correct network name to match my password...
    HELP PLEASE!

You can always delete the network and reenter a new one.
If you don't know the name (you have it hidden??) then you are going to have to go into your router setup to find out what you named it. On your computer, try typing http://192.168.1.1 (yours may be different). You should be able to see your network settings, including name. Your router may require a password, check your documentation.
If you are not broadcasting your network name, you might run into future connection problems with your touch.

  • Network name question

Are there any security concerns with what to name a wireless network (the SSID)? Any do’s and don’t’s?
I read one article that advised making it as long as allowed and mixing letters and numbers. Sounds fine for passwords but why would that make a difference for the SSID? The name itself is publicly displayed, not like someone is trying to guess what it is, the thing is broadcast.
Agree re passwords (we have it setup with WPA/WPA2), but not sure why that would make sense for the name.

I guess I disagree that it’s irrelevant. The more I think about it, the more I think that just some basic guidelines should apply. Actually, just one, don’t divulge personal info. Someone shouldn’t be able to see the network name and know whose it is. So I don’t think it’s a wise idea to put one’s last name or address or company name in the SSID. Just something generic but unique so there’s no confusing our network with someone else’s.
but absolutely agree, the type of security and password is far more important.

  • Change network "name" of MacBook Pro?

I logged into my router today to see what all was connected to it. I found all my computers and devices, but one was listed as a "*" for the name? It ended up it was my MacBook Pro. For example, if my iPod touch is connected, under the connected devices list, it says 'iPod." If my Dell PC is on, it says (the name of the service tag of the dell).....etc. So I was wondering, is there a way so that when my MacBook is connected, it doesn't just have a star or come up blank? I want it to say "MacBook Pro," or "Airport" or at least something so I can identify it.
    Thanks!
    Scott

I just looked at my router DCHP client list and also found there's no name there for this MacBook Pro - so, I opened System preferences/Sharing and at the top confirmed (in your case entered) the name for it (by tapping Edit then OK), then in the Router list hit Refresh. In theory this should now show the name for the Mac - but it doesn't ! Maybe yours will work as it should ...

    Hi,
It would help to know where you are seeing a Network name ?
This name for example is coming from the router itself (you would have to change it there)
