Changing Network Settings Freezes Whole System

Running 10.3 on a TiBook. All I've been trying to do for a while now is set up the internal modem for my remote access dialing offered by my ISP so I can get my messages and what-not while on the road.
But whenever I open up System Preferences > Network and try to make changes, the second I hit "Apply Now," I get the beachball and it never stops, never goes away no matter how long I let it go to try and give it full opportunity to resolve itself.
Of course to restore system functionality I can use Force Quit, but this means none of my needed changes are saved and so I'm back to square one.
Any reason why this should be, any solutions to offer? Other Sys Pref changes don't hold up the system and no other performance issues to report with this, it's been a solid machine and OS except for this one rather annoyingly crucial problem.

Hi Ronald I'd look at renaming the followingin ~/library/Preferences/
starting with
com.apple.internetconnect.plist to com.apple.internetconnect.plist.old
reboot and , if it still plays up, do the same with
com.apple.internetconfig.plist
com.apple.internetpref.plist
Give that a go and post back with results.
Cheers

  • Resetting network settings, or restoring system  HELP!

is there a way to restore your system back to a earlier date such as a PC can? and is there a way to reset network settings besides using system prefrences?? ive tried system prefrences and it doesnt help my problem. someone please help!

Here's a couple of answers from some forums i found.
I realised that I had a modem installed in the networks ports page in preferences. Even though it wasnt ticked I deleted it. Will see what happens when I next connect.
PPP refers to Point-to-Point Protocol, the way you connect to the internet via dialup. OS X's default is to automatically seek a network port to connect via. It sounds like your system is looking for the modem to make a connection before it looks for the Ethernet port.
Try this: Go to System Preferences>Network. Click-pulldown the "Show" pulldown menu that says "Network Status" to reveal and select the item "Network Port Configurations." You should see a list of at least two items: Built-in Ethernet and Internal Modem. The box next to Internal Modem should be UNchecked (and of course, Ethernet box is checked). Also, drag the Internal Modem item to be below Built-in Ethernet. Click the Apply Now button or close System Prefs and agree to Apply the changes in the Close dialog box.

I'm not an expert on OS X yet and someone else may provide a better answer soon but, in the meantime, here's what I'd do:
    1) If you have not run the basic maintenance routines do that first. At the least do the fsck -y and Repair Permissions. Then check to see if the problem corrects itself. If you allready have done these or if they didn't help then;
    2) search for the .plist file (preferences) related to the PPPoE and move it out of the folder where it resides. Then restart your Mac. if the problem corrects itself delete the moved file.
    Hopefully this will help.

  • Internet connection not working: don't know how to change network settings

I have a Macbook Pro with an internet connection that normally works fine. However, in my apartment, we are provided with a cable modem that has only one ethernet cable hook-up. Since we needed atleast two ethernet connections for two computers, we bought a switch that we hooked into the cable modem to give us extra ethernet ports.
Recently, while hooking up my ethernet cord to the switch, I have not been able to connect to the internet. Network Diagnostics tells me my Built-in Ethernet is working correctly, but Network Settings are at yellow, and my ISP, Internet and Server have all failed. I have followed all instructions to check my connections, and restart the modem, switch and computer many, many times but there is no problem with any of these things. The other computer connects fine on the switch and cable modem.
Additionally, under Network in System Preferences, I am being shown that there is an IP address and Subnet mask, so I am assuming there is nothing wrong with the cord, modem or switch (which work fine on the other computer), but there is no Router number, which seems odd. If it helps narrow things down, I am also trying to connect to the internet via DHCP rather than PPPoE, which is what I normally use.
I am guessing I must have accidentally changed something to do with my network settings and it is not adapting to the cable modem any longer. Unfortunately, I do not know how to do this, nor what to change it to if I had to. My landlady knows nothing about what kind of network settings I need to connect to the internet service provider. Other than calling Time Warner Cable (who provides the cable modem with ethernet hook-up)is there anything else I can do or should be considering in order to get my internet connection working?

  • How to change Network Settings on iPhone OS 3.1.3 on my iPhone 3G?

I'm using the iPhone 3G locked with Bharti Airtel in India. Airtel, for a brief time was authorized to unlock the iPhone 3G after the completion of contract period of a year but, now it doesn't.
Airtel has three network settings but I'm unable to change the settings. I need to change it to use unlimited data plan. Is there any official way to change it? and if not, will it possible to change the settings after I unofficially unlock it? Please suggest.
P.S. I'm running the latest iPhone OS 3.1.3

The ability to change the APN settings on the iPhone depends on the carrier file. Basically the carrier has told Apple if they want the settings to be enabled or not. In the case of the iPhone in Canada all carriers do not allow for the APN settings to be changed, and it would appear that Airtel is the same.
If the iPhone is being used properly with the carrier that the iPhone is locked to there should be no reason to change the APN settings.

As far as unlocking the iPhone goes the only way it to see if your carrier will unlock it for you. According to Apple you are correct in saying that Airtel does not offer unlocking, but you can always call them to double check.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1937
Hacking the iPhone is not recommended, and can not be discussed here on this forum. You can search Google, but if you are running 3.1.3 hacking your iPhone to unlock it might not even be an option.

  • I accidentally changed network settings and now I can't connect to internet

(I posted this on the board for OS X 10.4, but I figured my OS is irrelevant to my problem, so I thought I'd post it here for a better chance of getting help)
I accidentally changed some network settings on one of the computers on my network, and now it wont connect to the internet. All the other computers on the network work fine. I guess I need help getting things back to how they were.
I have absolutely no experience with networks, so I don't have a clue what to do. One thing I notice that might be of help is that when it's set to "Configure: Using DHCP," the section for "Router:" is blank. No address. The router address on all the other computers is 192.168.1.1. Similarly, the IP address on all the computers is some variation of 192.168.1.x, but on the problem computer it's a completely random number (as far as I can tell).
Any help would be EXTREMELY appreciated.
    Thanks!

Open Network preferences on the computer, select the connection method, click on the Advanced button. Click on the TCP/IP tab and set the Configure IPv4 drop down menu to DHCP. Click on the Apply button.
BTW, you need to post your questions in the appropriate forum which would have been the appropriate Tiger forum. This is the Snow Leopard forum.

  • My Firefox always changes Network settings to 'Use Manual Proxy' after every PC restart, even if I change the option to No Proxy/Auto detect proxy.

My Firefox 4 always changes the Network settings to '''Manual Proxy Configuration''' after every PC restart. I have to always go to connections and change this setting to '''No Proxy''' or '''Auto Detect Proxy Settings for this network'''.
I also tried to revert the values back to default values by using about:config and changing modified values back to default. But it still doesn't works out.
    Kindly help.
    Thank you.

I had this too, I tried running Firefox in safe mode (no add ons) - that didn't make any difference. I could save other preferences, just not the proxy setting. I'm 99.99% sure I didn't have a virus or other malware. This was only affecting Firefox, no other browser I has installed.
In the end I created a new profile - http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Managing%20profiles - that seems to have 'fixed' it for me - the new profile doesn't have the problem, but the old one still does.
    Windows 7, Firefox 4.01.

  • Remotely changing network settings

Can I use my computer to log into My Verizon Cloud and change my network settings on my iPhone 5?

        atsoren,
Having access to your device and it settings is very important so can understand wanting to have this option available. At this time however you are not able to reset the network settings on your phone through the My Verizon cloud application. The network settings can only be updated from the phone itself. Are you having any issues with your phone currently? We'd love to assist with any issues you may be having. Please keep us posted.

  • System preferences crash when trying to change network settings web proxy

I'm trying to add a web proxy under the network panel of system preferences. When I set up the password for the web proxy, the system preference panel crashes. I've successfully done this in the past. I'm not sure why the problem is occuring now.
imac G3   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   summer 2000 slot loading dvd imac

First thing to do is download Preferential Treatment and check all preference files, while logged into that problematic account. Trash any that it finds broken/corrupt. Quit the associated apps and try System Preferences again. If PT doesn't find any, then move the usual plists to the Desktop (com.apple.systempreferences.plist amd com.apple.NetworkUtility/plist in ~/Library/Preferences/, including any such as com.apple.systempreferences.XXXXXXXXXXXXXX.plists in the ByHost folder and try System Preferences again.
If those steps don't fix things, you can either copy the ones from the new user to the corrupt user, a couple at a time, log out and back in, and see if any fix or break things. That's a slow and tedious process. Alternatively, log into the new account, reset prefs, and eventally delete the old one. There's no easy way except to routinely make a bootable backup/clone and when you experience these kinds of problems again, restore it, and move on.

  • Corrupted Network Settings panel in System Preferences on MBA

The ethernet and WiFi symbols are switched and I get the ethernet setting window after selecting the the word "WiFi" and WiFi window when selecting the word "Ethernet.  I just re installed Mavericks after MBA "forgot" the admin password and now I get the message to reset the router and cable modem that I am currently using to connect with my iMac.
I there a way to re-load or correct the Network window?  I can't upgrade the MBA because it can't connect and reinstalling the system via target mode from my iMac is a real long drag.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and  Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • AirPort changes network settings by itself

At system settings / Network / AirPort, I deal with a strange behavior:
I have configured my AirPort connection several times to use a static IP, but for any reason it switches back to "DHCP" from time to time.
Unfortunately I can't say when this happens (installing updates, maintaining an AirPort station, etc.), because I always just take notice about this by incident.
Today I was needed to change it back again, now I have closed the lock for these settings.
Has anyone an idea what the reason for this odd behavior may be ?

No one has made similar experiences ?
Well, I can state so far that after I "locked" the settings, no more change was done.
Anyway, I really would feel better if someone has an idea what went wrong ? I can exclude that I have any malware on my computer, since I'm quite restrictive in installing software.

  • Cannot connect to wifi, cannot change network settings [SOLVED]

    Asus EeePC.
    lspci -k shows
Broadcom Corporation BCM4313 adapter is the hardware, and appears to be working. Kernel driver in use is bcma-pci-bridge
In Gnome, Wi-Fi status shows "not connected"
"Select Network" shows a list of available APs, I click on ours which is set up as WPA2 PSK. Click Connect. Nothing happens. At all, no dialog for password, no attempt to connect seems to be processed by the computer. This happens with open networks as well (coffee shop or whatever). Click connect but nothing further happens.
From the applet I can't even seem to be able to "Turn off" the WiFi at all.
From within Wi-Fi settings in the applet, I can see a list of available access points but clicking on them does nothing. There is no available way for any user input, although I can click the toggle to turn off Wi-Fi from within there.
I can't forget networks in my history here either: click "History" and I can see a long list of previous networks. I can check box for them all and say "forget" but then they're back when I open the history again.
So it seems like my NetworkManager is just simply not working. Can't change the current state of "not connected" to anything at all.
When I attempt to connect using Wifi-menu I get:
    Successfully initialized wpa_supplicant
    >WPA Authentication/Association Failed {FAIL}
When I attempt to connect to any network. It never asks for password.
    Gnome-Keyring is installed.
    Netctl is NOT installed.
NetworkManager is installed and running according to systemctl
I've been running this Arch install on this machine for two years. This is not a new install problem. No hardware can be changed on this machine, so it's not hardware related (unless the wireless device itself crapped out).
Possibly related, I cannot shutdown the machine from within Gnome. I have to "sudo shutdown -h now" from a terminal. Seems to hibernate/sleep properly when the lid is closed though.
All of the results of searching on this indicate usually the problem is multiple network config softwares installed at the same time, like netctl and networkmanager together. Or not having a keyring manager installed That is not the case here unless it is one of those that is broken, but they don't seem to be.
I have no access to any wired connection at the moment at all, so I can't download anything to this computer at the moment. There's gotta be a way to get wifi working again, as it was just working last week. Haven't even done a pacman upgrade between when it last worked and when it stopped working.

I did mention the hardware is a Broadcom BCM4313
It may have been an issue with the Broadcom not working with iw. Not sure, as I haven't really changed things on this machine much (it's my wife's and I regularly update it but don't fuss with it much beyond "get it to work"). Like I said, the install is 2 years old, so compatibility may have even changed since I initially set it up.
I'm currently at work and without direct access to the computer in question. So I'll get those results later tonight.

  • How to change network settings

    hello,
so i just recently got my first macbook pro (yay me)
and the day i was setting it up i was going through the start ups and all and when it came to the network connections i used a connection that is a guest connection for my home router and now every time i start my mac i have to change the connection to the connection i need it to be (the guest connection requires a password for every time i want to use safari and it gets annoying)  so i was wondering is there anyway to delete that guest connection and set my main router to be the main network connection on my mac?
