Changing New Mail Sound

I have an iPhone 4 (AT&T) running iOS 6.0.1. My "New Mail" sound persists in being Tri-tone, despile all my efforts to silence it or change it to another sound.
I have tried to reset it using Settings>Sounds as well as Settings>Notifications>Mail without success. I have restarted many times, and done a complete reset/restore once, all without success. The settings appear to be correct, but the loud Tri-tone sound still persists.
Any suggestions?

I have done a complete backup and restore (twice), as well as a "Reset all Settings".   Neither solved the problem.  I have not yet done a "Restore as new iPhone" because of all the effort that would entail, and because I have become doubtful that any of these things will help.
I may just have to live with the problem.  I was hoping that I had just overlooked a simple setting somewhere.
Thanks for your help!

  • Itunes volume changing after outlook new mail sound

I have a new iMac running Mountain Lion and I was playing a song in iTunes, when my "New Mail" sound played in Outlook.
The music level dropped and never came back up again.
    Any ideas?

    That is incorrect.
well, it always worked this way for me on all my imap accounts (I have 4).
and I've seen lots and lots of posts describing the same behavior. I don't know what's going on in your case.
I have two email accounts, both use IMAP IDLE, and I get the new mail sound each and every time a new mail message is delivered to either.
So there's some other factor at work here.

  • Headphones play new mail sound upon plugging in

Whenever I plug in or unplug my headphones, my computer plays the new mail sound repeatedly, presumably for each email I have recieved since last plugging/unplugging them. It also plays the sent mail sound if I happened to send any emails in that time period. This only started happening after installing Lion, and searching I have done has yielded no results. Anyone else have this issue and know how to fix it?

I solved it at least for my situation.
When you plug in usb audio such as a monitor with speakers, or other speakers go to the sound settigns in system prefernces and select sound effects and then select internal speakers. The problem seems related to the sound effects going through external audio or USB audio.
Make sure internal or headphones is selected instead of usb while the usb audio device is plugged in. Unplug the device and then plug it back in verifying that the setting stays changed to internal speakers for usb audio devices and it should fix your problems.

  • New mail doesn't make the "new mail sound" when received

Hi! I have a .mac email account, and I use two different aliases for the account. I want all the mail sent to one of the aliases to go into a designated mailbox. I've tried doing this with both a smart mailbox and using a rule to move the messages to a mailbox on my .mac account (not both at the same time, I've tried it separately both ways).
Both of these options work, except that mail will not make the "new mail" sound when I get a new email for that mailbox. Even when I add to the rule that it should make a sound, it doesn't. Other mail (i.e., all of my other mail that is delivered normally to my inbox) is not affected--I still get the normal sound. Any ideas? Thanks! (And BTW, I always give points for helpful answers!)

    You’re welcome.
Actually, I don’t participate here just to be helpful. I also do it to learn. I know WAY more about Mail now than I knew when I started helping people here... and without having experienced myself any of the problems I troubleshoot each and every day...
    I really wanted an answer.
That’s precisely why you shouldn’t say in advance that you’ll give points. Nobody is going to assume you won’t, so there is no need to say you will. All you have to do is mark posts when appropriate (without saying in advance that you will). That makes everybody happy.
don't you ever get frustrated by the number of people who don't
mark helpful or solved answers as such?
Not if the OP somehow lets me know whether the proposed solution worked or not. Sometimes I know for sure what the problem is and how to solve it, but others I don’t, and the user’s feedback is way more valuable to me than any points I could get.
So yes, merely setting up a smart mailbox is enough to make Mail
    to quit making the sound.
I’ve been unable to reproduce what you describe, but I’ve found something that could be related. Selecting an IMAP (or .Mac) mailbox causes Mail to check for changes made to that mailbox, including checking for new mail and applying rules as appropriate, just like it would do when automatically checking for mail according to your settings, except no sound is played if new mail arrived...
Could that be what you’re observing, i.e. could it be that Mail is actually behaving as expected but it seems that it isn’t because you’re checking for new mail as a result of manually selecting the account’s Inbox or something like that?

  • Ghost Email, new mail sound and no mail, quite often

I have a two part question: I get the new mail sound with the activity next to a mail box but quite often no mail. Sometimes I'll check online to see mail which I haven't gotten on my computer. I play with the Junk Mail settings, which I do not use. I have several RULES which I will turn off just for a test. None of this seems to matter
    MacBook Pro 2.4 GHz/2 GB SDRAM/   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   .Mac & POP

I would like to add many times my .mac mail box will show a number but when clicked on the number would go "poof". It seems my computer is showing the number of emails recieved on the server but not forwarding them, until I go to the web site. I do Rebuild the mailbox and usually I'll get one or two I looked at

  • New mail sound suddenly stopped working

I assigned a 'new mail sound' (wav file) and for no apparent reason suddenly stopped working. Anyone else experienced this ?

This sometimes happens to me too, as well as my alerts with iChat. I have to restart the computer and that fixes it for me. Hope that is the case with you as well.

  • Random "New Mail" Sounds

Can anyone help me with this, or has anyone experienced this...
For the last couple of days my iPhone vibrates and makes the "new mail" sound. I look at my mail, text messaging, calendar and no new messages. I have checked my preferences and I don't see where this could be coming from. It really sounds like I have a new mail message, but there isn't any. They only thing I can think of is the sound comes because the phone has just finished and letting me know it has checked the mail. Possible?
At first it was rather intriguing, but now it is getting annoying.
    Thanks.

    hittlets,
Do you have a POP mail account set up on the iPhone? If so, do you have that mail account open on a computer or another device?
The symptoms you are describing sound like it may be caused by POP lock. That occurs when you have more than one device (computer, phone, etc.) accessing the email server at a time. POP protocol is designed to only allow one device to access the server at a time. So you may be receiving the new mail dings when the iPhone checks the email server and sees new messages, but you are not seeing them in your inbox and getting the "load 25 more messages" option because another email client is accessing the server, preventing the iPhone from actually retrieving the new mail. Shutting off the other programs or devices that are accessing that email account should allow new mail to be downloaded by the iPhone correctly and you should see those new mail dings start responding to new messages the iPhone downloads.
    Hope this helps,
    Jennifer B.

  • where can I download new mail sound when new mail comes in?

where can I download new mail sound when new mail comes in?
    Thank you,
    BigBlaze

Go to Mail Preferences, use the drop-down "new mail sounds". The very last option is ADD/REMOVE. You can choose a sound that will be copied to your own User Library.
To find how many sounds you already have on the computer (TONS if you have any games) just to a search the computer for aiff or aif. Copy the file you like to the desktop so you can find it easily, and add it using the above instructions.
The sound gets copied to your library, so you can delete the desktop file when you're done.

  • Can't get new mail sound to work

i recently updated to Lion and set up my gmail account on the 'Mail' application on the imac.  My sound is on, and i enabled the new mail sound, however when i get a new email, it doesn't make the sound.  What should i do?

I had the same problem but that was because I had the wrong sound-output selected. Make sure it's set to "Selected sound output device".
System Preferences > Sound > Sound  Effects
Hope this works for you as well.

  • The New Mail sound won't play through SoundSticks

After many many years of using Eudora as my E-mail client, I have finally switched to Apple's Mail. So far, so good, EXCEPT for an inability to have Mail's "New Mail" sound play through my SoundStick USB speakers.
I should mention that I use a "dummy plug" plugged into the front headphone jack of my G5 so that I don't have to listen to the startup bong when I turn the computer on. This has never been a problem because I use SoundSticks for my audio and, since the G5 can't "see" the SoundSticks when you first turn the G5 on, no bong through the SoundSticks either. Once the computer is up and running, all audio comes out of the SoundSticks. This is true of all of the alert sounds my Mac makes too. Even the "Send Mail" sound (swooshing plane) plays through the SoundSticks as it should.
But the sound I have selected for "New Mail" (no matter which sound I select) just won't play through the SoundSticks. If I unplug the dummy plug from the headphone jack I can then hear the "New Mail" sound through the internal speaker. But I don't want to hear it that way (and I don't want to permanently remove the dummy plug either).
Why is it that Mail's "New Mail" sound is the ONLY bit of Audio that I've found that WON'T play through my SoundSticks?
    Help!
    Mark
P.S. A friend of mine is having the exact same problem with a G4 connected to SoundSticks. He says "HELP" too!

    Anyone?

  • Can't remove new mail sound from 5s iPhone

I can't turn off new mail sound on my iPhone 5S. I have set sound to "none" in settings.

@gsheppard I can understand how it can be frustrating not to send out email.  The error message that you are receiving indicates that the out going server settings are incorrect.  The in coming server setting are correct that is why you can receive and out going server settings are wrong which is why you can not send out.  The best way to get this resolved would be to contact your email provider and get the correct outgoing server settings.  Hope this helps.  Thanks.

  • Mighty Mouse side button gives 'new mail' sound

I have recently noticed a strange phenomenon with the mighty mouse on my iMac :-
Whenever I squeeze the side buttons in either Mail or Adobe Reader it gives the (submarine) 'new mail' sound. Other applications are fine. I am using Steermouse, and the side buttons are configured to give the 'page back' command in my browser, which works correctly. But I'm sure that the strange sound problem didn't used to occur.
Any ideas what's going on ?
    Cheers,
    Chris.

It's because there is nothing to go back to, so it plays the "alert/error" sound.
Just like it would if you were to hit the shortcut key....

  • Intermittent new mail sound when retrieving emails.

    Hi there
There will probably be (hopefully) an easy answer to this question. I recently migrated to an iPhone 4 (my first iPhone) and I'm still learning how to use it.
I've configured my email to check my emails from my "normal" email account (POP account) and it works properly I think. When I tap the mail icon it opens, checks mail and SOME of the time there is an email notification sound.
That's my question: why does the email notification only sound now and again. If I send myself a test email it doesn't sound (new mail sound is definitely turned on) and only some mail triggers the email notification. It's no big deal but it's annoying me. Latest software version 4.3.3 installed. I've Googled it but not allot of it makes sense to me. Has the same beaviour either on WiFi or 3G.
Can anyone shed any light please?
    Cheers

    Bump???
