Changing old JPG originals to DNG

I've read where it is a good idea to change the RAW to DNG. I've also heard some discussions on why it would be a good idea to have all your originals transformed to DNG's as well. Of course it will take up a lot more room.
Most of my originals are JPG from before taking RAW. The RAW have been changed.
What are your thoughts on changing all the JPG originals to DNG? I have a lot of originals so it would take some time, but not an impossible project.
Thanks, Sue

>THere is another thread that covers this extensively.
Can you point to it Don? I haven't found any discussion of the JPG to DNG question. My feeling is that on the one hand it keeps everything neet and tidy (no sidecars) but on the other habd the overhead from larger DNG file size is huge.

  • Looking for a way to speed up rendering when only changing a JPG in HD Video

    Hey guys,
                    Wondering if anyone can help.  I have a movie that I render on a weekly basis for a business which has various HD video clips as well as a background JPG layer.  Fundamentally, the video clip plays for 30 seconds followed by 30 seconds of the JPG, and this alternates for about 15 minutes.  Every week I have to change the JPG to reflect what is current for that week, which means I have to re-render the entire project which is pretty time consuming.  Is anyone familiar with a way to speed up this process?  All help is greatly appreciated.

    Perhaps you misunderstood.  If I understand your process correctly, you have one video over one jpeg background that repeats and repeats.
    My recommendation: don't render the same thing over and over again in AE.  Render in AE ONCE, then take it into the editing app to repeat and repeat.

    Mail/Preferences/Accounts - select the account using the - sign at the bottom. You also might want to go to a good account, select Outgoing mail sever (SMPT), click on the dropdown menu, select Edit SMPT server and make sure there are no servers left associated with the old e-mail addresses.

  • Is it possible to change a jpg file back to an ai file?

    Before I begin I am a complete novice. Never used a mac before, never used illustrator before.
    My sister made some wedding invitations for me on illustrator which I ordered last week. They have arrived but unfortunately there is an error on both the front and inside. She has since gone travelling, so is unable to rectify this.
    I have her mac and have managed to change the front cover however there is no ai file for the interior image, only a jpg. I have spoke to her, and we have spent a long time trying to track down the ai file but it's completely disappeared, no idea what's happened and she cannot think of any reason why it would have been deleted.
    Is it possible to change a jpg file back to an ai file so I can edit the text? It is a very simple edit (mistake is RSPV instead of RSVP ). She mentioned trying to just put a box over the text but there is an image in the background so I don't think this is possible for a novice like me.
    Can anybody (in very simple terms) give me any advice? I am starting to panic (sister isn't back for 18 months, wedding in just over 2 months!).
    Thanks

    In that case automatic vectorization won't get you anywhere.
    Use Photoshop and move the two letters around. You might be lucky and noone notices.
    Can you show a screenshot?

  • How to add new songs to ipod shuffle from different computer with different itune library without change old songs on ipod?

    Hello,
      I am using ipod shuffle. Now it's having some songs.these songs was synchronised with my old desktop itune library. Now i changed to laptop and downloaded latest itune software. Now i need to add more songs to ipod without change old songs on ipod. How it's possible? Please help.

    The way iTunes and iPods are designed is not compatible with what you want to do. The best approach would be to open iTunes on your old desktop, and make a backup of your iTunes library, from which you can copy across all the songs from your old library onto your new laptop - not just the ones that were synced to the shuffle. One place to start for instructions on how to do this: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1364
    The other approach is to search online for a utility that will copy songs off an iPod without syncing it, add those songs to your new library, and then erase-and-sync the Shuffle. This way, you only get to save whatever was synced to the Shuffle at the last sync.

    I just solved this issue! Here's the solution in case anyone else is experiencing the same problem: I had him link his phone number to his Apple ID by adding his his phone number to his contact in his Contacts List. After that, messages sent to his phone number are blue.
    I'm guessing his phone number was disconnected from his Apple ID when he somehow toggled off iMessage.

    No, your accounts will remain separate, any content that you download via either account will be tied to that account - so each account will only be able to authorise its own downloads on your computer's iTunes, redownload them, download updates to its apps, and make in-app purchases in its apps.
    Is there are particular reason why you've created a new account ? If it's due to, for example, no longer having access to your old email account then you can update the email address on an account by tapping on the id in Settings > iTunes & App Store and selecting 'view apple id' on the popup and logging into it, via the Store > View Account menu option on a computer's iTunes (click the Edit button to the right of your id at the top of your account's screen), or via http://appleid.apple.com . If you want to re-use the email address on the account that you've just created then you will need to change that first

  • Changes are not saved in DNG

    I've been experimenting a bit with saving changes made to Canon 20D Raw files to DNG, but without success. When I open the saved DNG file with Apple's Preview, it displays the file without the changes. (I've tried "Embed original raw file," and not doing so.) This leads me to suspect that if I send the DNG file to a photo processor it will print the file without my edits. I am hoping that printing DNG files, rather than JPEG, will produce greater color and tonal fidelity. I have discovered no other reason for converting to DNG that is relevant to me. Is there a way to ensure that edits are properly saved to the saved DNG?

    I've been experimenting a bit with saving changes made to Canon 20D Raw files to DNG, but without success. When I open the saved DNG file with Apple's Preview, it displays the file without the changes.
    This is expected and normal. Most image previewers cannot read or understand the .xmp information created by Adobe Camera Raw.
    This leads me to suspect that if I send the DNG file to a photo processor it will print the file without my edits.
    If you can find a photo processor that handles DNG files, it is entirely possible that it will print the file without your edits, as you suspect. That's not because the edits aren't stored in there; that's because as far as I know, only Adobe software can read and make use of the edits from Adobe Camera Raw.
    If you need your edits for some external (non-PSE, non-Adobe) application, you probably need to create a .tif or .jpg.
    I am hoping that printing DNG files, rather than JPEG, will produce greater color and tonal fidelity. I have discovered no other reason for converting to DNG that is relevant to me. Is there a way to ensure that edits are properly saved to the saved DNG?
    A pixel that is Red 200, Green 123, Blue 13 should print the same whether that pixel is delivered in a DNG, .tif or .jpg. Of course, if you convert a photo to .jpg, that pixel may wind up with slightly different values, but if you choose high quality .jpg, I don't think the human eye can see the difference, and if it could, I suspect the difference would not be "color and tonal fidelity"; instead the JPG would show artifacts. If you are experiencing problems with "color and tonal fidelity", this may be due to the printer, or the color profile, or a couple of other issues.
    There has never been any claims that I am aware of (either here or at ElementsVillage.com) that edits are not properly saved to DNG. But the way to confirm that the edits have been properly saved it to close down PSE, and then re-open it and see if your edited photos show your edits. Similarly, your edits should also appear in other Adobe software (Lightroom, Photoshop). Under ACR preferences, there is an option to save your edits in a database or in .xmp file. Please make sure that .xmp file is selected.

  • Newbie: Change in Approach PEFs and DNGs?

    Waiting on my new MacBook and Aperture 2, but am reading furiously. Am laying out plans for a (hopefully) orderly transition from PC (using ACDSee Pro for workflow and file cataloging) to Mac and Aperture. Would appreciate comments on my planned approach, but first some background.
    Here's what I do now: I shoot in RAW (PEF), then convert to DNG using Adobe's converter. I do nothing with PEFs, but do save them. I do editing from DNGs and convert to JPGs when I want to share.
    PC file structure: I put photos files in top level folders (PEFs, DNGs, JPGs). Within these file type folders I have yearly and then monthly folders. This to facilitate DVD archiving (only have to burn latest photo folders, not subject oriented folders with mixed dates). I find images I want using categories and keywords in ACDSee. Works well for me.
    By the way, I'm not taking tons of photos. I have about 30GB of files and that includes the same photos in PEF and DNG, then JPGs of the ones I've wanted to share. My MacBook will have a 500GB drive, so I can keep all my photos (probably for quite some time) resident on my HDD (current HDD contains a total of ~150GB including OS).
    As I'm learning about Aperture, it seems I have a lot of redundancy I don't need. So here's what I'm thinking.
    1-Planned backup regimen: a) use Time Machine to do routine backups of my HDD to attached external HDD; b) use online backup service to routinely backup all data online; c) given a) and b), I think I'll stop with the DVD archves except for PEF storage. Once I get a DVD's worth of PEFs in a folder will burn and delete from HDD (will not manage PEFs in Aperture).
    2- Am undecided on whether or not to manage masters within Aperture or as referenced masters. What are Pros/Cons of referenced masters given I have plenty of HDD space to play with (i.e., all referenced files will be resident on drive)?
    3- Aperture structure will be: years as folders, months as projects, albums within months.
    4- Question: how to handle/reduce all the redundancy in my old system as I import? I print from my DNGs as ACDSee embedded my edits in them. Most JPGs are exact copies of adjusted DNGs, but some are quite derivative (e.g., processed IRs and some layered photos). I'm thinking I should ONLY import as masters DNGs and those JPGs that are highly processed derivatives of the DNGs and discard the JPGs that are simple copies. It would be easy enough to export those should I need them again.
    Well that went longer than I'd planned. Thanks for bearing with me and I'll appreciate any experienced advice/comments anyone is willing to give.
    Thanks

  • Photos changed from jpg to png?

    I just bought a new iphone 4 from the Apple store because my old iphone 4 had a broken power button that could not be replaced. This iphone was working fine- it updated to iOS 7 and all of my contacts and apps synched onto it fine. Now I'm having a problem with my pictures. When it uploaded the pictures I had on my previous backup, it uploaded them in png format, not as a jpg. Now every picture I take on the iphone 4 is in png format which will not upload onto my iphoto on my MacBook Pro (which is from 2009). Ang suggestions on what to do?

    Since an iTunes upgrade in May 2011, iTunes converts jpg to png if the artwork is added to multiple tracks using the get info window.  Artwork added to individual tracks in the get info window, or artwork added to multiple tracks in the artwork box on the browser (the lower left corner where it says "Drag Artwork Here" if there is no artwork).
    Now, to add jpg artwork to multiple tracks, the artwork has to be added via the artwork box on the browser.  If there is existing artwork, this must be deleted first or the new artwork will not replace it bet will be added as a second file (this can be seen on individual track in the get info window).
    The problem with conversion to png format is that the size is increased (doubled or more).
    There are two problems with adding to the artwork box for multiple tracks.  First is the issue that previous artwork must be deleted since adding to the artwork box does not replace existing artwork.  Second is an issue which occurs if you are also playing tracks while adding artwork.  This is due to another problem with iTunes; that the artwork box changes automatically from "Selected Item" to "Now Playing".  If it is set to "Now Playing", the artwork is added to that track, and not the selected tracks.  Also, it takes a short time to add the artwork, and if iTunes switches to the next track in the middle, it stops adding artwork to the selected tracks..
    So, to add jpg artwork to iTunes, you need to do the following:
    1. Delete existing artwork from the tracks.
    2. Make sure the artwork box title is "Selected Item" and not "Now Playing"
    3. Drag new artwork to the artwork box
    4. Make sure the artwork box does not switch to "Now Playing" while artwork is being updated.
    I recommend not playing tracks while adding artwork, to avoid problems with either updating the wrong tracks or not completely updating the selected tracks.
    And I wish iTunes was changed back to the way it was.  Using the get info window did not have these issues.

  • HT202274 Password change old password not recognized after 10.9.5 upgrade

    God bless you, peace.
    macbook pro 2012 user password not recognized after 10.9.4 too 10.9.5 upgrade plus tech work at apple.
    I want to change user password, it is allowing me to get into user account and admin account on computer but I recently changed it for the tech work to be done. I would like to put the password back now to old password or a new one but... The few days old new password pre update and pre tech work is not being accepted to allow me to change to another password.
    recent update, after 10.9.4 to 10.9.5 update and apple tech work done.
    1. Tech work replaced optical drive,
    2. 10.9.4 to 10.9.5 upgrade left computer endlessly booting up, then got into finder window tried to read backup drive and screen went to black curser and could not backup information as techs decided may need to be done before I left it with them.
    3. Also track pad was not (is not again) selecting text to drag unless real hard press and then only intermittently would select text or just drop the selection (not hold the selected text after a long scroll select, did work at first after tech work but back to not working). It is still not responding easily when pressed, but it is much better, as they did something with software they said. Today While typing this I am trying to select words misspelled and it does not select them unless I press not as hard it is becoming the same as before I see now, sometimes less pressure is needed but more than should be used.
    I noticed today after tech work The Spell check is not responding with a two finger tap on the red underlined misspelled words without multiple try's with two finger tap. The curser moves around after selecting words also, or when selecting words so hard the curser moves to another place not on the desired words or check box. The curser arrow tip should select the word but it does not recognize unless I put the tail of the arrow onto the word then it recognizes the misspelled word for spell check on two finger gesture.
    It looks like I need to take it back, I tried to call and check to confirm if the track pad intermittently and curser adjustment was serviced. In order to verify I had called three times to get that information to no avail. endless looped in the phone que, one would answer take info and then forward me to a endless loop dial ing phone that never was picked up, supposedly at the Bay street store tech section. Phone voice mail from apple support status on the repair, ...Juliano from Bay Street Apple repair store Emeryville, ca left a voice message... just generically said optical drive replacement is successfulI, I noticed right away three items were to be addressed but only the optical drive was mentioned, so I called three times to try and verify the other problems. One whole minute just to select this text and copy it to notes for a backup. It would not select at first, then after selected it would not copy it, then it would not paste to notes, it paste the last cut and paste I did 10 minutes ago.
    I do not have a easy excellent wifi connection for my wifi only phone and would prefer email or chat for repair help. apple Repair No: R142180337

    Try running the combo update. It fixes more files/data than the App Store upgrade.

  • Multiple number change - old to new - CC version

    Hi all,
    Can anyone help me out with the following:
    I got a document which have got around 200 article numbers which need be changed from the old number to a new number, desciption, image etc will not change. I got an Excel list which got the old code in A1 and the new code in B1.
    Instead of changing all the codes by hand one by one, i would like to know if it is possible as a mass change.
    Thanks i advanced
    Best regards,

    Hi,
    So your script could look like:
    var myFilePath = "~/Desktop/oldnew.txt",
    myDoc = app.activeDocument,
    mySource = myDoc.textFrames.add(),
    mySource.place(File(myFilePath) );
    var myStory = mySource.parentStory,
    mTextArr = [],
    paras = myStory.paragraphs.everyItem().getElements(),
    myStyle = myDoc.paragraphStyles.item("articlenumber"),
    currCont, k;
    for (k = 0; k<paras.length; k++) {
              currCont = paras[k].contents;
              if (currCont !="" && currCont.indexOf("\t") > 0)
              mTextArr.push(currCont.split("\t"));
    for (k = 0; k < mTextArr.length; k ++)
              myReplace(myStyle, mTextArr[k][0], mTextArr[k][1]);
    mySource.remove();
    app.findTextPreferences = app.changeTextPreferences = null;
    function myReplace(style, find, change) {
              app.findTextPreferences = app.changeTextPreferences = null;
              app.findChangeTextOptions.wholeWord = true;
              with (app.findTextPreferences) {
                        appliedParagraphStyle = style;
                        findWhat = find;
              app.changeTextPreferences.changeTo = change;
              myDoc.changeText();
    Assumings:
    - oldnew.txt path is Desktop or to modify;
    - txt line is oldnumber - tab - newnumber - enter
    - there is a para style "articlenumber" defined and applied to each old number to be changed

  • Can I use Organizer to change the .jpg size of all photos in a folder in one batch process?

    We're using wa-a-ay too much disk space for a growing photo collection.   My daughter is a camera freak with four kids -- need I say more?
    In my current test folder the sizes of the original photos range from 2.3 MB to 4.2 MB.  I picked one photo at random and printed the original and then three more, saved by PSE9 as .jpg files at maximum, middle, and minimum quality settings on plain letter-size paper, and again on 4x6 photo paper.  It takes a magnifying glass and a calibrated eyeball to detect a difference on the plain paper, and it's even more difficult on the photo paper.  I think I should relieve the pressure on the hard drive's capacity by reducing everything to a more reasonable size; after all, the minimum-quality print takes up less than one percent of the disk space as does the maximum-quality print.
    I have a hunch that I can accomplish this in a batch process with Organizer, but that's all I have is the hunch -- not the know-how.   I would like someone to step me through the process.
    I also expect a lecture on why I shouldn't do this.  Go for it; I'll listen.
    Thanks,  Bud

    Bud,

    You are the one to judge... Will you regret it if you want to use some pictures with the original size and resolution at a later time?
    Yes, you can use either the organizer or the 'process multiple files' command of the editor. But first you should think about two questions:
    - Are you ready to backup the full resolution and size files before the 'shrinking'? External USB drives with big capacities are available and affordable.
    - From what you are saying, the optimal size would be for files resized for 4" x 6" format at 300 ppi in jpeg quality 8 to 10.
    Resizing from the Editor: Use the 'process multiple files' command and click the 'Same as source' button. I would not do it without a sound backup first... This can be done folder by folder.
    Resizing from the Organizer : Use the 'Export' command. That command leaves the original and puts the resulting files in a new folder. The resulting files are NOT included in the catalog.This means that keeping your organization (categories, albums, tags...) will be tricky; same if you are using a folder organization system.
    Another solution with a third party software such as Faststone photo resizer:
    - Absolutely do a full backup before
    - run the resizing options in the external software so that the files are resized without being moved. That replaces the originals.
    - If you are using the organizer, your organization will be kept, but the file sizes in the catalog and thumbnail databases will be wrong. You can regenerate the thumbnail cache by deleting the thumbs.5.cache file in your catalog folder; it will be automatically rebuilt.
    That has worked for me in the past... no guarantee for you!
