Changing 'ownership' of MacBook Pro

I recently purchased a MacBook Pro (2008 model) and I'm running 10.8 on it. I changed the administrator information to reflect my information but when I view the HDD info, it still shows the previous oner's name. How can I change this? -Thanks in advance.

Boot into Recovery and erase the main startup volume. Go through the intial setup process and import your data from a backup.

The HD was recently changed on my MacBook Pro and I lost my iTunes library (Time Capsule died also!) but all my songs are still on my iPhone4.  How can I copy them back to my laptop? Tks

Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was planned with you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss.  Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchases which can be transferred to a computer.
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848 - only purchases from iTunes Store
For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will have to use third party commercial software.  See this document by turingtest2: Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991

  • HELP PLEASE! Export Aperture 1 Library and Import to Aperture 3? Or another way to transfer files WITH changes into new MacBook Pro?

    Hi everyone,
I recently purchased a new MacBook pro with Retina display, to better manage Aperture and Photoshop. I took the advice of the genius (and after spending all night messing with permissions, etc.), opted out of using Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant and decided to transfer my files manually (as the two systems weren't merging properly the first time -- it was a giant mess). Long story short, I tried to transfer everything from my previous MacBook (operating on 10.5.8 with Aperture 1), and Aperture 3 couldn't handle it. It was crashing, and crashing so badly that NO button could be activated in the program (I FINALLY got Aperture working by disabling previews, and by moving from a managed library to a referenced library).
I initially dragged and dropped all photos from my previous MacBook to my external, and imported. I obviously lost folders, edit history and any other information that I needed to know what edits had been done on the file. Additionally, any movie that had been imported into Aperture was corrupt (the file was not transferring over correctly). I searched and searched for different methods, and finally found that I could export each project from my original MacBook as a "Library" and consolidate masters, or not, etc. I took the time and did this for each project. When I went to import these into Aperture 3, it said I was not able to because the libraries were from a previous version of Aperture.
Is there any way to bypass this? Or another way to transfer my projects? I understand I won't be able to do this for my entire library... but I'm wondering if there's any way to transfer my changes made, projects and details from Aperture 1 to Aperture 3? (and for those who might pose upgrading my original MacBook as an option, I cannot. It's too old. I think the best I could uprade to is Aperture 2, IF i can update the OS. Though, I definitely don't think I should be forced to do that since I've aleady re-invested in a new computer, AND had to re-buy Aperture for the new one.
Any/all advice is VERY much appreciated, as I really want to move forward and FINALLY start appreciating this program and computer (i.e. my investment) and move forward business wise. Thank you!

    Hi Jack,
Thanks for responding (as it seems as though no one else has been able to provide any insight as of yet)! Not sure if you saw my recent post, but the version of Aperture on the 2008 MacBook has been upgraded to 3.1.2 (not sure how; I bought it in 2009, but only have OS X 10.5.8... which apparently can't house 3.1.2 of Aperture, but hey, like many other anomalies i'm encountering, I'm no longer surprised!). I am unable to upgrade it any further, as it warns me that my OS X does not fit the requirements. I exported the projects as libraries; however, like I posted before, apparently these are from too old of a version for the new Aperture (3.3.1) to handle and import.
It's getting to the point where I'd almost pay to upgrade the OS X on my previous MacBook (10.5.8) to something newer in order to THEN update Aperture to a newer version; however, my previous MacBook simply cannot handle this (the specs are awful -- hence my decision to save up and upgrade to the newest MBP with Retina).
I've spent hours upon hours transferring files, libraries as projects, previews, versions, even masters (though, apparently some of them aren't accessible?) with no luck. I've rebuilt the library and reprocessed everything. And this is all after having to return one MBP already since Aperture 3.3.1 is glitch-y as it is, and froze everything for having a "managed library". So, now that I know that I have to deal with a referenced library in Aperture... I just need to actually transfer my previous library to my new one (hopefully WITH adjustments since these are years worth of photos and work).
Again, any help is appreciated. I've lost enough sleep, time, and vision health over this at this point.
Also, I know Migration Assistant is an option, I was told that it wouldn't work properly anyway because of the different operating systems, and the potential for problems.

  • How do I see or change ports on macbook pro

I am having problems getting into a Cisco Meetingplace room and one of the suggestions is to change ports. How do I view the ports on a Macbook Pro?

you don't see ports. Normally you can set ports in the relevant application, like Chat apps, or Mail, in the account settings.

  • Change SSD on Macbook Pro 17" 2.5 GHz intel Core 2 Duo late 2008

Now I'm using Macbook Pro 17" 2.5 GHz intel Core 2 Duo late 2008. I would like to know if it is possible to change my 250Gb HDD to a SSD? What is the max of Gb?

Yes, it is possible. The capacity of the drive is limited by what the manufacturers of SSDs are producing and, of course, by the depth of your pockets. Expect to spend $600-900 USD for a 250GB or 256GB unit and $1000-$1600 for a 512GB SSD.

  • Change graphics Card macbook pro, is it possible?

Hey, Im just wondering if it's possible to upgrade the graphics card on a macbook Pro, late 2011 model. if so, what's the price?

No, any attempt to remove or change components on the logic board will void the warranty...because Apple and authorized apple service centers will not attempt to do that.

  • Changing configurations of MacBook Pro that I already ordered

Hi everyone. I recently got my friend to order a MacBook Pro 15" on Tuesday. I forgot to get him to configure it to a 128GB solid state drive. Now I want to change it. I did a bit of research and I found that my order would be shifted to the back of the line. So if I do change my MacBook, how long will it take to deliver now?

Call Apple customer support. They will locate your order, and change details on the order. Apple customer support will tell you how much time there will be until delivery.

  • Changed HD on Macbook Pro now can't recover backup from Time Machine

    Hi,
My HD gave up the ghost after running very slowly for a while on my MacBook Pro 17" 2006 model using OSX Leopard.
I bought a new MacBook Air running OSX Lion but did not recover from the Time Machine on Airport Extreme as a friend told me that files there could have been corrupted as well.
Anyway, I replaced the HD on the old machine but again decided to do a clean instal in OSX Leopard. Using a caddy I selectively pulled in all my files and documents including my iPhoto Library. I set the TM on this new HD which did not use the old sparsebundle. So this is now a complete new backup.
However, I need to recover a few old photos which somehow disappeared from the new iPhoto library. I am sure that these are still on the old TM back up file. But I cannot get to it through the TM application.
Is there anyway I can get access to previous backups using either Leopard or Lion?
I have consulted Pandini (I think that is what it is called) but they do not seem to have an answer to my specific problem.
    Many thanks
    Tariq

And as for backups, one backup set and one method are not enough and when you use the same drive that was used for an older OS that changes the set.
You show 10.7.4 so 10.7.5 now? there was a supplemental update 1.0 to deal with bug in TimeMachine also.
There is forum area for TimeMachine in OS X community.
I like "Back in Time" from same people that have TriBackup ($60) and recommend using Carbon Copy Cloner (now $39).

  • Hostname automatically changed from USERNAME-Macbook-Pro

My mac has always had the hostname USERNAME-MacBook-Pro, shown when opening a terminal.
Recently, after the system has been booted the terminal name automatically changes to USERNAME-mbp when I open a new terminal.
    When I run:
    sudo scutil --get ComputerName
    I get: "USERNAME’s MacBook Pro"
Does anyone have any idea what could have caused this behaviour?

  • I am changing macs from MacBook Pro to MacBook Air can I transfer application licenses to new device

I have a MacBook Pro 15 that I need to switch to a MacBook Air . I have applications like aperture, MS Office 2010, photoshop and others that I want to move to the air. I will be cleaning the drive on the MacBook Pro and selling it.
Is there a way to do this and still be compliant to the licenses?

Except for some very specialized licenses, yes you can do this. If you simply migrate your system from one to the other you should have all your apps on the new one and working fine. To be legal, just delete those apps once your new system is up and running fine.

  • Change Hard Drive MacBook Pro mid 2009

My hard drive is dying (the beach ball appears, concurrent with a sound that can only be described as a squeak, coming from, I assume, the hard drive. Then, the beach ball freezes and the machine can only be revived by a hard restart)
    My Question; can I put a Seagate Momentus XT ST750LX003, 750GB, Bulk 2.5 ", 8GB Flash, SLC, 32MB Cache, 7200 U / min • SATA III 6.0Gb / s in a Macbook pro Mid-2009 15"?
Would be very grateful for a reply

Ask as many questions as you like, OK.
Basically yes they are all backward compatible except for the drives and or firmware on the drives that refuse to be backward compatible. Which drive they are I have no idea but mostly they are SSDs and not spinning HDD. The transfer rate on any spinning HDD is slow enough, even on the XT series, that if you have a SATA II bus the drive can't really fill it up, IE can't go over its theoretical Rated transfer speed and or the actual data rate it can handle.
The problem occurred on 2009 MBPs because some of the original cables used could not handle the extra data rate the XT series drive could deliver, both reading and writing to the drive.

  • Changed RAM in Macbook Pro now the Apple logo appears then switches off

    Hi all,
I hope someone can offer me some assistance with this.
I'm using a Macbook Pro (unsure of the year) It's a 13" running an i5 and 4GB of ram. I believe it is running Mountain Lion.
I took the back off and added one strip of 4gb to go along side the strip of 2 and rebooted the system. Now, when the Macbook turns on, it chimes, and the Apple logo appears and it turns off.
I've tried resetting the NVRAM and removing the new chip and just using either the 2 or 2x2 that came with the MBP but to no avail. I've followed the instructions here, but nothing works.
It seems very strange that just adding some extra Ram would cause the system to fall over. I've worked quite a bit on computers over the years and i'm 100% positive i didn't put the ram chip in as such that it would damage the unit.
Do i have any other options here? If possible i don't really want to reinstall the OS and lose my programs. I'm not worried about the data as there isn't much on there but I have Office for Mac 2011(i think) installed and i no longer have the disc. Is there a way to do an OS repair which just overwrites the system files and not data?
As said above, i've tried also booting into the recovery partition but the same thing happens, it starts to load then shuts off..
    Very confused!
    I hope someone can help
    Thanks,
    Sam.

I tried to repair the disk permissions but it kept throwing up "live file system repair not supported" errors, plus when i tried to install Mavericks it said my disk was locked.
I did a quick Google and I think I need to boot from a USB stick running Mavericks and try and repair from there..
I'll report back on my findings. Thanks for your help so far.

  • A site I use every day told me today that it would only open in 32-bit mode.  I cannot change this in system preferencees as suggested.  Could anyone explain to me why suddenly, and how to change this? (MacBook Pro 10.6.8) Thanks!

Hi.  I am in need of advice - and am not very IT savvy!  I have a MacBook Pro 10.6.8 OS.  A site I use every day told me today it would only open in 32-bit mode.  I researched and found some advice on how to choose 32-bit mode in system preferences.  I do not have that box to click in system preferences.  Can anyone tell me as to why suddenly this has happened, and any suggestions on how to go back to 32-bit mode would be great!  I did try restarting holding down the 3 & 2 keys as suggested too.  No luck.  Thanks for any help.

Does the site use 32-bit mode Java? If that's the case, you should have both 32 and 64-bit enabled though Java Preferences in your Utilities folder:

Nobody in these forums represents Apple or any store.  To find out if you can buy something, you need to contact stores directly yourself.  The online store does not sell these, you can see that from their website.  Call the Apple retail store nearest you to see if they will make a special order.
