Changing page numbering

Hi everyone,
I have a 24-page facing pages document. The first and last pages are the cover for this booklet I'm doing, and the first page will be on the inside cover and therefore a left hand page. I'm using master pages for the inner pages of the booklet and have used automatic page number on these master pages. With it set up like this, the second page of the file (which is actually page 1 of the inner pages) is showing as page 2 since it's a left hand page being the inside cover, but I need it to show page 1. I tried clicking on this second page and choosing "Numbering and Section Options" and then chose "Start page numbering at 1", this changes the page number to 1 but it also makes this page a right hand page whereas in fact I need it to stay a left hand page and just change the numbering.
Is this possible in Indesign CS2?
Appreciate any advice.

^ There is something to be said for David's response and I would certainly check with your printer before sending it to them.
If you do need to number your pages such that odd numbers fall on LH pages, uncheck "Allow Pages to Shuffle" from the flyout menu of the Pages Palette before changing the section start.
We actually have to do this in Teacher Editions quite frequently because the A, B, C teacher insert pages frequently start on a the left page (and A is equivalent to 1 in InDesign's pagination brain).

  • I'm having a devil of a time changing page numbers even though I'm following the instructions for doing so.  Any tips?

I imported an already paginated text from Word into Pages to format it for a book.  I don't wan the first few pages numbered, so I've been trying to begin page one at the beginning of chapter one.  I've followed the instructions for changing page numbers, i.e., click next to page you want to change; in dialogue box click "start new header /footer; a new section is created; click Setup, click Section; in page numbering section, select  "Start at" and enter a new starting number."  In trying to do this often I can't get the dialogue box, or when I do, I get a new section that commences with a blank page.  Or, the dialogue box that should allow me to change numbers never appears. Help!

Is this for the Mac or iOS?
You only have iOS 7.0.4 as atag.

  • Help please with Page Numbers & Facing Pages in Book Layout

I am having some dramas with my book project which is 168 pages including cover.  I have created 22 different documents for the chapters and other pages.  I had everything in a book and have been able to create a PDF, but then I needed to remove the cover so it can be printed separately and to change the page numbering to start at 1 after the contents page.
When I added numbers after the Contents page, it pushed all the pages out of order - ie what was previously sitting on the left was now sitting on the right etc.
Removing the cover also impacted on individual spreads.
    Since then I have:
    - Updated my program to resolve an issue where Indesign kept shutting down when I tried to change page numbers.
    - Recreated the book twice, but find the spreads are all out of whack as I add them - doesn't appear to be auto paginating.
    - Called Adobe and got given tutorials that have not helped me resolve the issue because I have followed the tutorials but it hasn't resolved the issues I am having.
Is there a way that you can stop autopagination and tell the pages which side they need to be on?  I currently have one chapter finishing on an even number of pages and the next starting on an odd, even though there are an even number of pages in that chapter, which is bizarre?  How do I fix this please?
I would sincerely appreciate anyone who can tell me how to fix this.  I have read and watched so many tutorials showing how to set it up but there doesn't appear to be any that help with trouble shooting when you have followed the process but something bizarre happens.
Is there a way that you can dictate the sides that the pages should be on?  Can you turn off the auto pagination anywhere?  This is an urgent request.
    Thanks,
    Hayley
PS  I started in CS6 and am now using CC.

    A few things to consider:
Not all books are the same, but many begin on page one, which is a right page, and as it follows, all odd pages will be on the right with even pages on the left. If your book had the cover as part of the book, I wonder if that meant that your first page was on the left?
Books leaves hold two pages (front and back), and therefore book page counts need to be divisible by two. You say your book is 168 pages including the cover, which you moved to another document, leaving 167 book pages. If you were counting the back page, that might make for a 166 page book, which would be OK, but depending on how it will be printed, the page count may need to be divisible by 4, 8, 16, or higher, and the printer may need to add blank pages to get to the correct page count. Can you tell us how your book will be produced?
Many people like to keep  their chapters in even-numbered page count, so that new chapters may start on the right. This sometimes requires you to have a blank left-sided page at the end of some chapters. This blank page is sometimes labeled "This page intentionally left blank" or some such wording (so as to let the reader know there wasn't a misprint), but isn't strictly necessary. Sometimes an ornament in the center of the page will do the same job.
Do you think these are things you would like to have in your book, or are you opposed to them for any reason? The answers may narrow the advise you get from the forum users.

  • CS3 and page numbering

Sorry but I cannot find where to change page numbering from the start of the document to say the 3rd page would now be page number 1. I found the preferences for section numbering under preferences but can't remember how to start page numbering at a different page. Thank you for help.

Hi. Nothing is selected. I just went into my document and clicked on the continue text at bottom and then clicked on next page so a new text box would be created with the continued text. I did this for 26 pages. Every one came up as centered text and ignore text wrap when I went back to check them.
Also, might you know how to get the 3rd page of the document to start automatically as page 1 (page 2 and 3 are my spread but when I go to numbering & section options and click on start page numbering at 3... so that hopefully it will start numbering there... it messes up my document and makes page 2 a separate page instead of keeping page 2 and 3 as my 1st spread... and then it makes page 3 and 4 as my new 1st spread. Thanks again.

  • How do I add page numbers to my document without the page numbers automatically changing. I do not want the page numbers the software automatically places into my document.

How do I add page numbers to my document without the page numbers automatically changing? The title page is blank, I can type in 1 on the 1st typed page, but the #1 automatically goes into the next page and will not change.

Click at bottom of the first page:
Menu > Insert > Section break
Click somewhere in the 2nd page (not the header/footer)
Inspector > Layout > Section > Page Numbers > Start at 1 > Configuration > uncheck use previous headers and footers
Click into the header or footer of the second page:
    Menu > Insert > Auto Page Numbers…
If there is anything in the header or footer on the first page that you don't want just select it and delete it.
If you really wanted to manual place page numbers on each page you will have to use a section break between each and every page. I can't imagine that would be useful.

  • Page numbering property changes not saved

When I change default values for the Page Numbering property to include main section only, my values are not maintained if I close the report (after saving it of course !...).
Then, if I launch my report via a report server, the total pages number is incorrect.
But, if I change default values and I launch my report directly via Reports Builder, it works fine, until I save & close it.
I have a TOC in my header section, and I want to retrieve the total pages number for my Main section only. I use SRW.SET_FORMAT_ORDER to execute the header section AFTER the main section to fill the TOC. Then, the total pages number retrieves ALL pages (header section + main section).
    Can somebody help me ?
Sorry for my english. I didn't use this language for years !
    Best regards.

This problem only appears with JSP reports... (Reports Builder 9i)

  • Mountain Lion problems with Mail Signatures, Pages, Numbers, Keynote - This quick fix solved all my problems with these. Pages etc wouldn't launch and needed to be force quitted. Mail signature changes wouldn't save.

The solution was simple in my case. I don't know why it worked and it may have been entirely coincidental but its worth a try.
Close all applications and restart Mountain Lion.
Log in as Guest. I opened Pages at this point but I don't know if that's required.
Log out and then back in as your normal user.
Pages, Numbers and Keynote now were fine for me and Mail signature changes were saved and available for later use.
For those trying to edit the signatures to get their old ones back - I just found an old sent mail and copied the signature there into the newly created one via the normal preferences. No need for opening .mailsignature files and editing them. This included various colours, sizes, an image and a link with no problems.
I hope this helps anyone having some of these problems.

  • In iPhoto '11 I cannot change the book settings. For example, adding page numbers. There is no "option" button as is suggested by the help item.

In iPhoto '11 I cannot change the book settings. For example, adding page numbers. There is no "option" button as is suggested by the help item. How can I change to book settings?

The "options" button should appear at the bottom of the iPhoto window, when you view your book, then the Book Settings Button should be available and you can activate page numbers.
But remember, that the settings available will depend on the Book Theme you selected. The above shows the settings for one of the "Travel" themes. In a Picture Book Theme, e.g. you cannot add page numbers.
What theme and book size are you using?

  • Word 2013 Table of contents - page numbers all change to 2 when print (or print preview)

I have a single section document in Word 2013.  The first page is a TOC.  The document is 4 pages long and has three Level 1 Heading styles through out the document.  The TOC initially appears correct.
When I go to Print Preview the TOC will revert all page numbers to 2.
Changing the Options "Update fields before printing" and  "Allow fields containing tracked changes to update before printing" has no effect (before anyone suggests this).
The only solution is to manually update the TOC, save to PDF, and print the PDF.
Anyone can reproduce this problem. Try it....
    Start with blank document
Insert a TOC (ignore the error message, we will come back to this)
Go to the end of the document and insert a page break to move to page 2
Now type a heading in Heading 1 style and press enter
type some dummy text (=rand(20) for example)
Continue steps 4 and 5 to insert more headings and dummy text.
Now return to the top (page 1) and update the TOC
So far so good.  Everything working well
Now go to Print Preview (Ctrl+P)
    Everything is still good
    Escape back to the document
    Go to Print Preview again
AGGGHHHH! All the page numbers have reverted to page 2
Happens every time without fail.  Totally reproducible on all our office PCs.
I have seen many descriptions of this behavior on different forums and
not one solution. But I am like the proverbial dog with a bone - I will not let this issue go until MS gives me a solution !

  • Latest pages change does not insert page numbers

Went to add the page number in a document and it does not insert the number or give a choice as to the format of that number.  anyone know a fix?

Acrobat has no way to know which bit of character string on each page is the page number.
The visible page number has never formed any part of Reader nav. as you point out, it couldn't.
Acrobat knows the Numbering Properties of the pages as created in Frame. It just doesn't display or honor them consistently, depending on Reader version.
I also use i, ii, iii, iv for pre-narrative material. The romans are displayed in the page number box of Acroread (this is AR7 on Unix). I can enter "ii" in the box, and go to that page. But the Print dialog is Ordinal only. Printing page ranges in AR7 is always off by 2 or 4 relative to the actual page numbers.
Acrobat Pro 9 (9.4.5, Win7-64) seems to be more consistent, and does show and accept real page numbers for Print.

  • Can changes be made to page numbers?

I have been using light room now for about a month and do think everything is getting easier.  I maintain my own website and use the web catalogs for preview photos of the auction every week.  I will frequently ad pages to the catalog every week.
On the bottom of the web page there are small page numbers plus previous and next.  These are showing up in a medium light gray I would like to make these numbers show up on each page either black or dark gray so they will show up.  Many people have complained that they can't see the numbers.
If you need to know what I am talking about you can look at the preview photos under weekly auction on my website. www.livingstonsauction.com
Any advise and step by step instructions on how to would be great.  Thanks in advance for your help.

  • Change Start page numbering to Auto Page numbering in the Numbering & Section Options using script

    1.  I have many documents to add into a book. After adding the documents, all file page numbers should be continued from the previous file. Now I am doing manually for all files at all time. Numbering & Section Options => Start Page Numbering at: to Automatic Page Numbering.
    2. And also I need to add the Chapter number with the page number (Ex: 1/2, 1/3, 1/4 … , 2/2, 2/3, 2/4 …., 3/2, 3/3, 3/4 ….). Here also I am doing manually like.  Numbering & Section Options => Page Numbering => Section Prefix: 1 and Include Prefix When Numbering Pages. (The page number should start from 2).
Note: In Every chapter opening there will be a file name called S… (Ex: Ch 1: S3391.indd, Ch 2: S3392.indd, Ch 3: S3393.indd). So after every S(S3391, S3392 …) file the next file page number should starts from 1/2, 1/3. 2/2, 2/2 ….
    Ex:
    Chapter 1          Pages
    S3391.indd
    32457.indd       1/2  … 1/5
    32617.indd       1/6 ….. 1/9
    32217.indd       1/10 … 1/13
    Chapter 2
    S3392.indd
    42457.indd       2/2  … 2/3
    52617.indd       2/4 ….. 2/9
    33217.indd       2/10 … 2/13
Could anyone give me an idea or script, please? At least for First one, could anyone suggest me ASAP.
P.S: I have some more questions regarding this, I will post that after some time...
    Thanks in Advance,
    Thiru

  • Need to change footer PAGE NUMBERS to start counting from page three

Hi I am doing some academic writing with AppleWorks and the cover page and second page should not be numbered. I need to start the page count from page three because the first two pages cannot be included in the count. ( Page three must be labeled page one, page four must be labeled page two, etc.) How can I do this?
    Thank you!!

    Hello,
What I have done is this:
    1. Click just to the left of the first character on page 3.
    2. Go to Format>Insert section break
    3. Go to Format>Section
    4. Select new page from drop down menu
    5. Select Restart page numbering, and insert required number
    6. Select Different this section
    7. Go to Format>Insert Footer
    8. In the footer created, type in whatever plus Insert page # from Edit menu
    I hope this helps.

  • Page numbers display as 5 of 1 and 2 of 2121 in a PDF that was created from a Word 2003 document

We merge several Word 2003 documents into 1 larger document that we then convert to PDF.  The page numbers in the Word document display properly - 1 of 21, 2 of 21, 3 of 21, etc.  We then convert that merged document to PDF by right-clicking the filename and choosing "Convert to Adobe PDF".  For those of us with Adobe Acrobat Standard 8.1.3, the page numbers in the converted PDF file display as 1 of 1, 2 of 1, ... 21 of 1.  Those with Acrobat Professional 8.1.3, they display as 1 of 21, 2 of 2121, 3 of 212121, etc., each page adding another total number of pages to the total.  There is no change in the result if using v8.0.0 or 8.1.4  Does anyone have any ideas???

Unless you have a specific reason to upgrade to OFFICE 2007, I would not recommend it. I hate it -- have it on two computers. I have had problems creating PDFs reliably from WORD 2007 and PPT 2007, at least with graphics. The conversion seems to want to split graphics up into several parts rather than leave it as one. It does not happen with WORD 2003 and so assume this is some sort of issue with OFFICE 2007. You can get the graphics fine if you use the MS plugin for PDF creation, but then you have to deal with the MS version of a PDF. If you want to try it on one computer in your office, I would do that before you make the change. However, if what you have meets the need, then why change unless there are specific items that you are looking for and don't have.
OK, that is my opinion. I am sure there are counter arguments. If I had the preference on my newer machines, I would have OFFICE 2003. Bill

  • Page numbers from MS Word cannot be deleted in pages

A colleague sent me a MSWord (Mac) document that I opened in pages 09 and started working on it. I need to delete the page numbers that were put in on the MSWord document. I guess they were put in using the automatic page numbering feature in Word. However, In the Pages09 document they are not in the usual footer location. It almost looks like they are part of the page background. They are not selectable and cannot be removed. It I choose to add page numbers using Pages, they numbers appear in the usual footer location—in addition to and not supplanting– the unselectable page numbers brought over from MSWord. Does anybody know a solution to this?

    Loren,
The persistent content usually is a Master Object. So, you were right to begin with: Format > Advanced > Make Master Objects Selectable. One would think that if this is always the solution, it would be a simple matter to now select the tenacious item and delete it. The problem is that sometimes the object while now selectable is still not accessible.
This Master Object can hide behind the Header box, as though the Header was a solid glass wall. Deselecting the Header function, in the Document Inspector, will give you access, but it will also irretrievably delete your Header Content. A better way, I have found, is to change the header Margin figure in the Document Margins Pane of the Document Inspector.
Once you have moved the Header, Footer, or whatever else might be sharing the space, off the persistent page number, you can click on the page number Object and hit Delete. Now you can put back whatever you had to move, and you should be good to go. Consider yourself lucky if your Pages header doesn't fall over the old Word Header.
