Changing Radio Mode on an Airport Extreme (ac)

I have a 1st Generation Airport Extreme (802.11ac) the tower.
Using Airport Utility 6.3.1 there is no option available for changing the radio mode.
I have tried using the option key allowed me to open a summary window when clicking on the Edit Button, but not under any other circumstances.
(As an aside, when the summary window is open, you have a better way of tracking the AP clients)
I also have an Airport Express (802.11n 1st generation) Airport Utility 6.3.1 shows some additional radio modes and more with the option key pressed (see figure below)
If I use the Applescript kludge to open Airport Utility 5.6.1, I can get the options below, but there are some severe warnings that using this version of Airport Utility has a good chance of ruining your AirPort configuration.
Question 1: will using 5.6.1 really harm things?
Question 1a: is there someway of getting these to be available on Airport Utility 6.3.1
Question 2: is there any advantage to using any of these modes available using 5.6.1?
Question 3: Since I've shown that my Macbook will NOT switch to a different AP even though the signal strength from that AP is much weaker than another AP until I toggle my wireless on the Macbook on and off --- would any of these modes below help to solve that problem?
Question 4: Since the Airport Express (n) can use only one frequency, and the default option of 802.11a/n-802.1b/g uses the 2.4GHz wireless, is there an advantage to changing it's radio mode to use the 5GHz frequency? Consider that the Airport Express (n) is primarily servicing an Apple TV.

Using Airport Utility 6.3.1 there is no option available for changing the radio mode.
Apple has decided for you that you no longer need to change the Radio Mode from the Automatic setting if you have an 802.11ac router.
Question 1: will using 5.6.1 really harm things?
If you are referring to the 802.11ac products, probably not, but it won't help either, and 5.6.1 is not supported with the 802.11ac AirPorts, so results may be unpredictable. If you try to use a setting that is not present in the 6.x version of AirPort Utility, the settings will not "stick" on the 802.11ac product when try to update it.

The AirPort Expess A1264 is a single band router. The Airport Express A1392 is a simultaneous dual band router. The default wireless setting of the A1264 Express is 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible)......not 802.11a/n -- 802.11b/g which is one of the settings available for the A1392 Express.
802.11n only 5 GHz is capable of faster speeds than the 2.4 GHz band, so in theory your connection might be faster.....but it will also be weaker, so you would want to have close to a line-of-sight relationship between the Express and Apple TV for 5 GHz to work well. Unless you have an extremely fast Internet connection....higher than 150 Mbps.....5 GHz offers no advantage in that regard since your connection speed will be limited by your Internet connection plan.
If there are a number of other 2.4 GHz networks around you that might be interfering with your network, the 5 GHz option might be good choice since there are very few networks using that radio band....for now. That will all change very quickly in the next few years.
It could not hurt to try the 5 GHz option to see if you think it works better than 2.4 GHz. There are never any guarantees with wireless, so it is not possible to predict what the results might be until you actually try things out in your own home.

I'm using both a Macbook that is 5 ghz compatible as well as an Airport Extreme that is able to transmit 5 ghz. When I switched my radio mode from 2.4 ghz to 5 ghz and ran speed tests, the download speed was at 2.7 mbps each time...in other words, switching to 5 ghz made no increase in my download/upload on the speedtest. Is there a reason for this?

People have been talking about how their internet speeds have increased dramatically with the use of the 5GHz option.
Unfortunately, they don't have the correct facts that they need. As John says, your Internet connection speed is limited by your ISP. Even the slower 2.4 GHz "g" speed on your router is likely much faster than your Internet connection will allow, so having even higher speed capability with 5 GHz on your network buys you nothing as far as the Internet connection speed is concerned.
Simply stated, a router cannot "speed up" the Internet connection. That is controlled by your ISP. If you need faster Internet connection speeds, you need to check with your ISP about a faster....and more expensive....plan.
Where 5 GHz can help is on a local network between devices. Say, you want to copy a file from one computer to another, or from a computer to a hard drive over the wireless. In this case, 5 GHz will allow the data to transfer at a higher, faster rate than a 2.4 GHz connection.
The result is that it will take less time for the file transfer to occur using 5 GHz on your local network.

How can I change the country in my Airport Extreme wireless settings

I bought my Airport Extreme in the US. I live in the UK.
How can I change the wireless settings to show the UK (or Europe) as one of the available countries? At the moment it lists only countries in the Americas (Canada, US, Argentina etc...)

This is exactly correct.. You can set the Time Zone to anywhere in the world but the wireless is regionalised.. it is part of the sales approach that you should buy the product in the market where it will be used.. the following are the regions.

If you want the pin out to the serial port.. well I can even give you those. At least for a TC.. I am not in any way recommending this.. just showing you where it is hidden.
And this so far would only work on a Gen 4 or Gen 5 AE.. I haven't figured it out on Gen 1-3 nor of course am I about to try soldering in wireless to a Gen6 AE or Gen5 TC.. doubtless it will come to that at some point.

How can I change my IP address in airport extreme?

I have an airport extreme and I would like to change the IP address. There is a renew DHCP tab next to IPv4 Address in Airport Utility, but if I click it doesn't change anything. I'm very green on IP addresses, how can I change the IP address?

Every time you connect to a website, any website, your IP address is sent along with the content you request. There is no avoiding that. It's the method by which the content is delivered to you, analogous to a return address on an envelope you send in the mail. It's not required for websites to maintain a log your IP address or the content you requested. Most of the time it's discarded.
That IP address sent with your web page request is the address of your ISP's router - not your AirPort Extreme. Its address can be used to identify only a broad geographical area, and only your ISP will know the location of the specific equipment it's using. To truly obscure your location from even that broad category requires connecting through a web proxy server, of which there are many to choose from. The only IP address that could be "tracked" using one of them could be anywhere around the world, and would change so often as to be useless to anyone wanting to locate you.
In any event specifying a fixed IP address for your Extreme will not accomplish anything in the way of security or privacy, and would be no different than using DHCP.
If you are concerned about privacy in general that is a very wide-ranging subject. I'll start by suggesting you avoid Google and all its products and services, for obvious reasons.

I would suggest that you perform a "hard" reset on the AirPort Express Base Station (AX), and then, using the AirPort Utility, reconfigure it "join" or "extend" the AirPort Extreme as appropriate for your networking requirements.

How to change file ownership/permission on Airport Extreme Time Capsule

I have a 3TB Airport Extreme Time Capsule that currently have a folder with a number of files. The problem is it won't let me delete some of these files because I don't have permission. On a mac it would be trivial to either take ownership or change my permissions. Any ideas on how I can do this on the TC?

Your first post seemed to say that some specific files couldn't be deleted. If you know any of their names, see if one is locked. if not, that isn't the problem. If it is, unlock it and try to delete. If it still won't delete, that's not the problem, either (or at least not all of it).
How can I just make all file unlocked since I have no idea which of the tens of thousands of file are at fault?
I know in OSX its easy to change permissions on a folder and then propagate that change to all child foders and files. Does locking/unlocking work the same?
If you don't know of any specific files, try creating one, locking it, then seeing if you can delete it.
There doesn't seem to be any way to unlock all files in a folder.
Do you want to delete everything on the TC? If so, just erase it with Airport Utility -- only takes seconds.
EDIT: These files wouldn't be in Time Machine backups, would they? If so, you can only delete entire backups via the Finder, not individual files or folders. But the message OSX usually sends when you try that says so fairly clearly.

How can i change my internet connection from Airport Extreme to my Time Machine

My laptop is connected to my Airport Extreme on the third floor.
If i take my laptop to the first floor to my Time Machine, my connection is lost with Airport Extreme.
It looks very logical to me that my laptop will automatically be connected to my Time Machine.......
But it does not......
What am i doing wrong..........has anybody an answer for me?

Airport extreme interfering with FM radio

I Have just set up my Airport extreme and it is causing a lot of interference with the signal to my bose radio that is situated close by. Can i do anything to negate this other than move them further apart?

Normally the two technologies should NOT interfere with each other as they operate in totally different RF bands. Does your Bose employ wireless speakers? I know my Bose home theatre sub-woofer speaker operates in the 2.4 GHz band and I do have to keep my wireless router and this sub-woofer apart to prevent interference.
Other things you can try is to change Radio Channels on your AirPort Extreme. By default, both the 2.4 & 5 GHz bands are set to the "Automatic" option. I would start by changing only the 2.4 GHz band to one of the manual channels: 1, 6, or 11. You can use a utility, like iStumbler, to determine other Wi-Fi in your vicinity to determine those with the strongest signals and what channels they are running on. Then set yours to one that is fartest away. Hopefully, this would provide enough channel separation to not affect your Bose radio.

Airport radio mode different between base station and extender

So this has basically stumped me and i decided to ask the community. I have a Time capsule1st gen that i use as my main base station. I set the radio mode to 802"11 N 2.4ghz only. On my airport extreme 1st gen, i set it to extend the network. However when i check the radio mode on the airport extreme its 802.11 n b/g compatible. Id really rather have the entire network be N only but not 5 ghz as I still have devices that don't support the 5 ghz signal (ps4)

Apple gives you only one option...theirs....when you extend a network using wireless.
If you can connect the Time Capsule and AirPort Extreme using a permanent wired Ethernet connection, you will regain the 50% speed loss that was imposed by the wireless connection between devices....and....you will be able to set the AirPort Extreme to use 802.11n 2.4 GHz Only as well.

I have just received an Airport Extreme

Model # A1143 as a hand-me-down Gift!! I already have an Airport Express. What's the most advantageous setup for using both devices? I live in a two-story Colonial home with a Netgear router and the Express in the same 2nd story corner bedroom. Where should I place each device?

In setting up the roaming network, would it be better to have both the netgear router and 2nd Gen. Express in the same room connected wirelessly or by ether cable? Or on different floors connected wirelessly?
The idea behind a roaming network is to have the routers be in separate rooms or floors to extend the overall range of the wireless network. As such, having both routers in the same room would defeat the purpose of this type of network.
I was suggest that you place each router in separate locations. Of course this would only be viable to you if your goal is to both extend the network and for iTunes streaming at the location of the Express. If you plan on streaming to the Express in the same room, you can connect the Express to the Netgear with a wireless connection, and then, reconfigure the Express as a wireless client. In this mode, the Express will work for streaming but will not function as a network extender.
Are the older devices worthless or can they help strengthen/extend the wireless network?
Let's take a quick look at each. The Netgear is capable of operating simultaneously on both the 2.4 & 5 GHz radio bands and supports the 802.11a/b/g/n radio modes. The AirPort Extreme can operate on either band but not both simultaneously. It also supports the same radio modes. The AirPort Express can ONLY operate on the 2.4 GHz band. It ONLY supports the 802.11b/g radio modes.
Some things to keep in mind.
Neither the Extreme or the Express can extend the wireless range of the Netgear using a wireless connection between them.
Both the Extreme and the Express can extend the wireless range of the Netgear using a wired connection between each and the Netgear. This would be the roaming network configuration. In this type of network, each router would provide its own wireless network. However, each of these networks would use the same Network Name (aka SSID) and wireless security type so that to a roaming wireless client they will appear as one network. The issue will be that the same wireless client will potentially change radio modes when connecting to another router which could lead to bandwidth performance issues.
The following are my recommendations, depending on your goals:
If you plan on having both routers in the same room, use the Netgear in conjuction with the current AirPort Express. Configure the Express to join the Netgear's Wi-Fi network as a wireless client for the purpose of iTunes streaming.
If you plan on having routers in different rooms/floors, use the Netgear in conjuction with a new 2nd Gen 802.11n AirPort Express. Configure the Netgear and Express into a roaming network. This will allow for both network extending and iTunes streaming.

Extend Wifi with Airport Express when Airport Extreme is in Bridge Mode

I'm trying to make my Wifi network easier at home but Im having some trouble.
My Internet Provider installed a Router at home. So I had to connect my Airport Extreme to the IP Router via cable and setup in Bridge Mode.
In my Airport Extreme I created a Wifi Network called WIFI HOME.
Than I connected two Airport Express into my Airport Extreme via cable and created two new wifi networks: WIFI HOME 2 and WIFI HOME 3.
But, in my opinion, this is not cleaver way to have my Wifi Network setup, since I have to change networks all the time.
The problem is that every time I tried to extend my current WIFI HOME setup into one of the Airport Express, the Airport Express crashes during the setup reset and my network starts to behave wrongly.
I'm starting to think that is something related to the Bridge Mode in my Airport Extreme. but I want to check with you guys if that makes any sense.

Power off both of the AirPort Express devices
Disconnect the Ethernet cables
Wait a minute
Power up one of the AirPort Express devices for a few minutes
Hold in the reset button on the Express for 10 seconds and release
Allow a full minute for the AirPort Express to restart to a slow, blinking amber light
Connect the Ethernet cable to the WAN "O" port on the AirPort Express if it is a two port version
Click the AirPort icon at the top of the Mac's screen
Look for a listing of New AirPort Bsee Station
Click on AirPort Express
The setup utility will open up automatically and take a minute to analyze the network. Then, it will suggest that the Express be configured to Extend the AirPort Extreme network.
Type in a name that you want to call the AirPort Express. Example........Express1
Click Next
Then, the screen message will change to indicate that the AirPort Express is being configured to extend using Ethernet.
When you see the message of Setup Complete, click Done.
The first Express is now set up and working correctly.
Set up the second Express exactly the same way........except give it a different name to avoid confusion.....Example......Express2.

How do I change my airport extreme from dsl to cable?

I have recently changed my ISP from AT&T dsl to Comcast cable and don't know how to change the settings to my Airport Extreme. Please help.

Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the AirPort Extreme, then click Edit in the smaller window that appears
Click the Wireless tab at the top of the window
Click the Wireless Options tab near the bottom of the window
Select the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz channels that you want to use
Click Update to save the new settings
Assuming that the AirPort Extreme is functioning correctly, the router will automatically scan to find the best available 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz channels to use.
It is possible that you might be able to guess as well as the utility, but you may not be able to guess better unless your scanning equipment will reveal "hidden" networks in your area.

Using TImed Access mode on Airport Extreme with other routers in bridge mode. Not working as expected.

I am trying to setup timed access mode on my airport extreme in order to limit the times devices can connect to my network, but I am having some trouble.
My setup is as follows Cable Modem ---> Airport Extreme ---> Netgear router
The Airport is running DHCP and the Netgear is in bridge mode. The only purpose of the Netgear is to provide a wireless access point for older b/g wifi devices. The Netgear is connected to the Airport by an ethernet cable from one of its LAN ports. All ip addresses are supplied by the Airport.
When I list a device mac number in the Airport extreme's timed access table it does seem to block the device if the device trys to connect to the airport's wireless service, but the device is still able to obtain service through the Netgear wireless service. I want the device to be blocked on both wireless networks. I thought this would work since all DHCP is on the airport. Why is the Airport allowing the device to connect when it comes in through the Netgear?
In this example the device I am trying to block is 5c:59:48:ba:28:d2.
Looking at the log on the airport I see the following entry when the device (when permitted) connects to the airport wireless

If instead the device connects to the Netgear wireless I see the following log entry on the airport (this connection gets through even if the mac address above is listed as blocked on the airport)

It appears that the Netgear router (while bridging the network) is somehow modifying the mac address format in a way that the airport does not recognise it as the device to block.
What can I do to fix this?

The Netgear wireless server has control over what what devices are allowed to connect.
Unless you tell the Netgear what devices you want to allow to connect, it will allow any wireless device to connect as long as it knows the wireless network password.
IF.... .you were using two AirPort Extremes, and not a Netgear, the two Extremes would communicate to each other....so you would only have to enter Timed Access settings on one router and other AirPort would automatically pick those settings up.
But, even this was not the case until the last year or so when Apple updated firmware. A few years ago, you might have had 2 Apple AirPort Extremes on the network, but you still had to manually set up Timed Access on both devices separately.
Bottom line, you need to setup the equivalent of Timed Access on the Netgear router.

Using an airport extreme in both bridged mode and guest network with DHCP

I currently use a third-generation airport extreme in bridge mode to connect my various Mac servers To the Internet. I'm using bridge mode on the AirPort Extreme because I have up to five static IP address (only using three now) I am currently not using the wireless network, and none of the servers are serving DHCP. I am looking at the Newer airport extreme with guest network Wi-Fi. My question is, does the new airport extreme base station support bridge- mode for any devices and host DHCP for the guest network connecting wirelessly to the base station?

The AirPort Extreme cannot be in Bridge Mode and support a Guest Network.
The AirPort must be configured to provide DHCP and NAT services if you want to enable the Guest Network function.
If you really do have a 3rd Gen AirPort Extreme, it will support the Guest Network feature if you connect the AirPort directly to a simple modem.....not a modem/router or gateway type of devices.......and configure the AirPort to provide DHCP and NAT services for the network.

Changing MTU in Airport Extreme

I would like to change the MTU in my airport extreme as I cannot see web pages etc. Unfortunately this cannot be done through the GUI of airport extreme. Is there any thought of this being an option in the next firmware update of airport extreme? Is there any utility today that can help do this as If I cannot do this I will be forced to buy another wireless router so I can get internet.

Maybe this is a dumb question but here goes... I understand why somebody would want to change the MTU on a router but when you say you cannot get internet because it cannot be changed I lose you.
Could you provide more detail?
