Changing RAID to AHCI on Elitebook 840g1

I have an Elite book 840 g1. I am trying to change from RAID to AHCI and cannot get it done. I have tried everything on the web as far as registry settings and bios changes. Nothing has worked. Any suggestions??

Solution for changing from RAID to AHCI on an HP EliteBook 840g1
My EliteBook 840g1 does not have an internal CD/DVD drive so I put my reimaging software on a USB and this worked great.
1. Back up your PC or important documents.
2. Put the reimaging software on CD/DVD or USB whichever one you plan on using.
3. Close all programs and restart your PC.
- Here is where it gets tricky -
4. Enter into the Bios by pressing ESC button
5. Make sure you change your boot order/ putting USB or CD/DVD first in the order - depending on what you are going to use
6. Once in the BIOS go to the 'Advanced Tab' then 'Device Configurations'
7. Scroll down to RAID/AHCI and switch to AHCI
8. Save all settings and exit.
- Here is where it gets trickier -
9. THIS IS CRITICAL - After saving and exiting the BIOS the PC will start to boot - don't let it boot - get back into the BIOS before it boots
10. Once in the BIOS go to boot options and select the option you put your reimaging software on.
11. Now boot to the USB or CD/DVD you have your reimaging software on
12. Your PC will now go through the reimaging process and when it gets done you will be in AHCI.
13. You can check this by going to 'Device Manager'>>double click 'IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers' and below that it shows 'Intel 8 Series Chipset Family SATA AHCI Controller'
14. This verifies you are in AHCI
15. Enjoy the improved performance
As far as changing RAID to AHCI using the registry settings I could not get this to work. I changed the Start value of several strings (msahci, istorA, istorV, etc) and could not get the change to happen. In my experience I had to reimage my PC to make the change from RAID to AHCI. If anyone has a proven solution changing from RAID to AHCI in the registry settings without having to do a reimage would they please speak up. Thanks and I hope all this info is helpful.

I've replace the internal drive in my Dell Latitude E6530 laptop with an SSD. The BIOS was set to RAID and I didn't realize I needed to set it to ACHI before installing everything. Well, I've installed the OS (64 bit Windows 7 Pro), my apps,
and have moved my documents over. It sounds like the best course of action is to backup everything (again), and then re-install the OS, the apps, and restore my files.
Well, I'm trying to avoid that. I read the support issue at
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/922976?wa=wsignin1.0 and I ran the "fix it", but when I restarted, went into BIOS, changed to ACHI, then rebooted, Windows 7 still blue screened. I went back into the BISO and changed back to RAID and
then rebooted, and I verified that the Msahci and IastorV subkeys are set correctly, but my machine still blue screens when I have the BIOS set to use ACHI.
Any other suggestions?

What else are you going to change from? Setting in BIOS for SATA channels are IDE, AHCI, or RAID.

Guide to Installing XP on a Raid Enabled (AHCI) ThinkStation S10

I spent a long time attempting to install Windows XP on my ThinkStation S10 with Raid 5 enabled. This post will detail exactly how to accomplish this process.
Method 1: Using F6 Option During XP Installation (Note: I could not personally get this method to work, therefore, I can’t confirm it.)
1) Download the appropriate Raid drivers for your operating System from lenovo’s support site (ie: “Intel Matrix Storage Manager (RAID) driver for Windows XP”)
2) Copy the files to a floppy disk (highly preferable) or USB drive. If you don’t have a floppy drive on your machine you will have to do the following:
2a) Boot into the BIOS by tapping F1. Navigate to Startup Sequence and move “Diskette Drive A” to the “Excluded from Boot Order” category. Make sure the USB devices are included in the boot order and in the right order. Also, make sure PCI SCSI: Intel VOL01 (this should correspond to your raid volume) is not excluded from the boot order.
For example, my startup sequence is the following:
1: IDE HDD
2: PCI SCSI: Intel VOL01 (this should correspond to your raid volume)
2: IDE CD
3: USB CD
4: USB FDC
5: USB Key
6: USB LS120
7: PCI BEV: P3-HL-DT-STDVD-RAM GSA-H60
3) Enter the BIOS (tap F1) and set the following.
Devices --> IDE Drives Setup --> SATA Raid Enabled: Enabled.
Devices --> IDE Drives Setup --> Native Mode Operation: Automatic
4) After the first Lenovo splash screen, there is a black screen which lists all your hard drives, hit ctrl-I to enter Intel Matrix Storage Manager. Here you can delete and create your raid volumes. Mine was setup with my computer so I left it alone. For more information on configuring your raid volume look for the following documentation on lenovo’s support site: Hardware Maintenance Manual (HMM) - ThinkStation S10.pdf --> Chapter 7. Installing and configuring RAID
Note: Record the information on the top right hand of the screen (ie: ICH 9 and the version number) This information may be needed this when installing the raid driver.
5) Reboot with the inserted XP installation disk. At the very beginning of the windows install process a message on the bottom bar will say "Press F6 if you need to install a third party SCSI or RAID driver." (Be alert to not miss this message.)
5a) Insert the USB stick and follow the instructions, it should ask you to hit “s” to specify additional device.
Note: When I tried this it did not detect my USB stick and wanted a floppy. Maybe someone can confirm how this works? Below are the exact instructions from the “Intel Matrix Storage Manager (RAID) driver for Windows XP (32-bit) - ThinkStation S10” driver readme.txt file.

7. Highlight the selection that is appropriate for the
    hardware in your system and press Enter.
8. Press Enter again to continue. Leave the floppy disk in
    the system until the next reboot as the software will
    need to be copied from the floppy disk again when setup
    is copying files.

6) Install XP as normal and everything should work properly.

Method 2: Using nLite to Integrate the Drivers into the XP Install Disk
1) nLite can’t use .exe drivers, rather it needs the un-archive drivers containing the .inf (setup information) file. Therefore, right click on the .exe and select “Extract To…” or “Extract Here” (Note: You will need 7-Zip or WinRar to do this).
1a) When un-archiveing the “Intel Matrix Storage Manager (RAID) driver for Windows XP” you will reach a file with an .IMA extension (ie: F32.IMA). This is an image file so you will need mounting software like Alcohol 52% (Free Edition), UltraISO, Daemon Tools, etc. to extract the .inf file.
1b) Simply install and run any of the above mounting software and open the .IMA file and copy the contents to a folder.
2) Download nLite and follow the guide.
2a) Insert the Windows XP CD and right click “explorer” and copy the files over to a new folder called XP_Source. Then Start nLite and point to the directory where you have XP_Source.
2b) During the “Task Selection” screen select “Integrate Drivers” and “Create a Bootable ISO”
2c) On the “Integrate Drivers” screen click the “insert” tab and search the for the .inf file in the folder where the raid driver is located.
2d) Follow the rest of the nLite setup to your liking until you have the opportunity to make an ISO on the “Create a Bootable ISO” screen. Select the “Make ISO” button and save the file on your computer. Next, burn the ISO to a CD using burning software such as InfraRecorder, CDBurnerXP, Nero, etc.
3) Without loading the CD, boot your system and tap F1 to enter the BIOS. Enable RAID and the following settings:
Devices --> IDE Drives Setup --> SATA Raid Enabled: Enabled.
Devices --> IDE Drives Setup --> Native Mode Operation: Automatic
4) While in the BIOS navigate to Startup Sequence and make sure PCI SCSI: Intel VOL01 (this should correspond to your raid volume) is not excluded from the boot order.
For example, my startup sequence is the following:
1: IDE HDD
2: PCI SCSI: Intel VOL01 (this should correspond to your raid volume)
2: IDE CD
3: USB CD
4: USB FDC
5: USB Key
6: USB LS120
7: PCI BEV: P3-HL-DT-STDVD-RAM GSA-H60
5) Select F10 to save and exit.

GT70 Bios Raid or AHCI

Hello
I just receive a GT70 with one SSD but another one next week as a MSI gift
So I will want to install the two in Raid, but there is no raid function in the bios
I saw two bios on MSI download center AHCI or Raid
I suppose that I have the AHCI one and I have to install the Raid one.
It's a pity that live update refuse to change it, for it I have the last version uptodate.
Do you know if the Raid version can also work in AHCI mode, so I should be able to flash it before to receive my secon ssd ?
The first one is hitachi and the second one plextor, same capacity, so I hope that there is no problem to have two different source for the raid.
Last question, the procedure to flash indicated on msi site is complicate (usign usb boot)
Is it really mandatory since my bios (last version) has a update function embedded ?

Activate RAID from AHCI setup

Just upgraded from XP to W8 then W8.1 and cannot get the RAID to work.
For the upgrade, I took out the RAID drives, and just left the system drive in place.
In XP the system has run with a system disc connected to a SATA port, and two larger drives in RAID1 (Mirror). The 3 discs are IDE drives each with an IDE to SATA converter. Its an MSI H67MA-E35(B3) motherboard with low power (eco) i3 processor.
After the upgrade, the BIOS SATA was set to IDE. When I put the two larger drives back into the PC (these are in caddies), W8.1 recognises them as separate drives.
I changed the BIOS to RAID, then got "Windows ran into a problem and needs to restart ..", then into a fix loop. After investigating, I found that changing the registry key for a SATA AHCI boot is where to start: HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\storAHCI\StartOverride
to 0, then in msconfig setting boot to safe mode, restart the PC, in BIOS set SATA to AHCI it took ages to boot to safe mode. Resetting to normal boot it works fine in AHCI mode.
The result is the same as IDE mode, W8.1 boots and works the same.
With limited and often unclear information from the web, I wanted to move onto RAID config. So changed the key: HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\iaSTorV\StartOverride to 0, this I understand is the Intel RAID driver activation, and setting
to boot to safe mode, I then set the BIOS to RAID on reboot. W8.1 never even gets to safe mode, no matter what I then do I cannot get W8.1 to get past the "Windows ran into a problem and needs to restart ..".
I would really appreciate this answering once and for all, with a process that actually works, by someone who knows and is not just guessing - preferably someone from Microsoft PLEASE.
What seems so silly is that W8 is reading data from the main drive to give me the repair loop, so why has MS made this so stupidly difficult. It is not uncommon to want to add additional drives to a PC, and in the past this has not been an issue to achieve. This

I just stumbled across this thread while trying to solve the same issue. My son has a PC with an ageing Intel D945GTP motherboard running Windows 8.1. I acquired a second hard drive and wanted to add it and create a RAID 1 array as security against HDD failure
but without losing data from the existing drive. At first I encountered all of the frustrations that you have detailed here. However, in the end, it was quite simple. I found a couple of threads online that indicated the procedure, as follows:
In Windows, open msconfig.exe (in Windows 8 just type this in the Metro screen and it will find the file)
On the Boot tab, check the box for Boot in Safe Mode, click apply and OK, then close msconfig.
The computer will prompt you to restart, click OK
During restart, go into the BIOS (click and hold either Delete or F2 depending on your motherboard)
In the BIOS, select the Advanced tab and go to Drive Configuration
Select RAID
Save changes and exit the BIOS.
The computer will restart and Windows will boot in safe mode. While it is booting in safe mode, Windows will install the RAID drivers. You can check it in Device Manager under Storage Controllers.
Open msconfig again and unckeck Boot in Safe Mode
Windows will prompt you to restart. This time Windows will boot normally with RAID enabled.
You can now download Rapid Storage Technology from the Intel download center and use the software to configure your RAID array from within Windows.
This process was relatively simple and worked perfectly first time in Windows 8.1 32 bit.

Changing Raid configuration

we have changed the Raid 1 to a non-Raid configuration for testing purposes. Now we wanted to set the Raid 1 again in the configuration menu of the LSI Controller. But there it says, that all data will be erased. Isn't it possible to set one HDD as the primary HDD and mirror the data to the other HDD (this way is possible with server controllers)? If this isn't possible, how can I get the Raid 1 back, without losing Data and the Service partition... Perhabps creating Rescue and Recovery cds?

are you sure your primary drive was released from the array topography? it sounds like something is still being flagged as being part of an array.
if that's no help, try this:
- physically unplug both drives from your system
- boot into the LSI BIOS
- delete the old array
- turn off the system
- plug the primary drive back in
- boot into windows
- plug in the second drive
- set it to 'online' in disk management
- run MSM and see if it will let you create an array
somewhere along the way you might have to delete the LSI array from the boot menu in the D10 BIOS and re-enable it.
my gut feeling is that something is still flagged somewhere and needs to be unflagged for this to work.

I have personally tried it via the F6 key and without touching the BIOS, and it worked fine for me with the Win-XP PRO installation.
One important detail is that it worked only when I provided it the driver files at the root folder of the diskette (aka, A:\ directory), while it didn't worked at all when I provided them within subfolders as they came after extracting the related downloaded zip-file!
Now, I realise that you need to install a Windows Server due to your need to run Oracle and some Oracle-based ERP software.
I haven't tried that, but my wild guess is that the raid driver should work via the F6 key with the Windows Server(s) as well. I might be wrong however, that was only my wild guess.
And another wild guess of mine is that you will probably face more issues with the rest drivers, after you install the Windows Server.
Especially with the Windows Server 2003, while you will might be more lucky with the Windows Server 2000.

Leopard and Maxtor One Touch III Turbo - changing RAID setup

So I just picked up a Maxtor One Touch III Turbo (1.5TB) - installed the Maxtor One Touch Manager, and have tried to change the RAID Setup to Raid 1.
The Maxtor OneTouch Manager software does not respond - it is set by default to RAID 0 (not ideal).
I installed the update to the software from Maxtor (now Seagate) - but still no dice.
Has anyone had any success using the Maxtor One Touch Manager to change the HD from RAID 0 to RAID 1 on Leopard?

Ok so I have not received a response from Seagate yet but after some additional reading in the forums I decided to plug my drive into an iMac, that I have not yet upgraded to Leopard, and BAM it works fine.
All I installed was the updated Intel version of the OneTouch Manager, not the entire CD. The RAID change works perfect and all tests passed.
It appears that it is just not compatible with Leopard.
The only concern I have is when that when I upgrade my iMac and then not have the ability to test the drives on my MacBook Pro if one of the drives appears to or goes bad.
I will still follow up with Seagate and if anything comes of it I will let you know.

Can I change the HDD in my Elitebook 8540w to a SSD?

I've got a HDD that has started to make funny noises and I expect it to fail pretty soon. And while that is depressing in it's own right I feel I should do the best of the situation and and put in a fast SSD instead of the old thing. But before I go and buy the equipment I need to know that it can actually be done. I have read another thread on this forum about putting a SSD in the expansion slot (CD/DVD) but I want to replace the main HDD. So, my best guess is that it is possible but if there are any people here with experience, please guide me in how to proceed.
I have made a backup of all my important files so really the only thing I want to do is remove my old HDD and put a new one in and then install Windows 7 from the discs that followed with the computer.

Nothing to stop you to replace an old HDD with a faster "modern" SSD. In theory you can use ANY SDD but on the safe side please use SSD from vendor(s) who guarantees its product will work such as the following vendor:

The upgrade process is very simple (I actually put one Crucial 960Gb to one of my machines today). My suggestion: before doing hardware stuff, backup all files/data and prepare for a "big bang" (in my case, I cloned my old HDD therefore very fast). Change RAID 1 to RAID 0

Hello everyone,
I have a W520 with Wondows 7 - it came with RAID 1 configuration - for some reason I disabled the RAID 1 and the second HDD became unacceesible. Now I would like to setup RAID 0 instead to use both HDD.
Could anyone tell me how to set it up. I used the 'Intel RAID Tech' and set up the second HDD, used Windows Disk Management to formate it, which worked fine. However, when I restart my system it doesn't boot and I have to do (CTRL+I) and delete the second HDD from the BIOS to go back to the previous setting.
Any help is much appreciated.

I am guessing you already have an ultrabay?
You could have an SSD in Bay 0 and one of your existing HDD in bay 1 for storage.
A USB3 enclosure could be purchased for the other HDD and used externally for other backups.
RAID 0 on a mobile device could end up disastrous for you if your data is crucial to you.

RnR Recovery - M57 Vista to 500Gb SATA

Hi everyone,
I came across "funny" issue...
My M57 (6069-CTO) was running well WinXP. Recently I replaced original 250Gb disk with 500Gb (WD5003AZEX) disk.
I tried to recover my Vista Business SP1 32bit, using original DVD Recovery set. It recovers "service partition" well, then boots up, reaches green/blue background on desktop saying "Please wait while Windows continues setting up your computer". This runs for several minutes and fails with:
"Windows Setup could not configure Windows to run on this computer's hardware" After reboot, the following message pops up:
Windows could not complete the installation. To install Windows on this computer, restart the installation".
So far I have tried to set BIOS to default settings (BIOS latest from Lenovo web site), changed SATA/AHCI to IDE (Compatibility), same problems all the time...Tried even to jumper 500Gb disk to run with 3.0Gbps...no luck
At the same time, I manage to install same set to 160Gb 2.5" drive I have spare without any problems, with SATA/AHCI enabled in the BIOS...
When doing Image of 160Gb disk and restoring it to 500Gb, Vista boots up OK and works fine (apart from several cosmetic issues which are minor).
Any idea how to make installation working ?

You have found a workaround by cloning 250GB to the 500GB..

This "IA" is a typo from the microsoft link.. it should have said advanced format. The microsoft link is:

AF would require intel chipset driver 9.6 or higher. You have found what does work during install on the 500 GB, ie a win 7 lenovo install ( newer, might have the correct intel driver). What does not work is the Vista Lenovo install (older, might not have the driver). The driver might not even be the problem.
Typical workaround:
(1) Bios, Change Raid to AHCI or IDE
(2) During install, click the load driver button (with the intel driver you copied to a CD). (DID YOU DO THIS?)
This 2 items seem to not have helped.

If you really want to spend the time, read the above microsoft article and run this test:
(1) create a win 7 repair CD
(2) Start the Lenovo vista standalone install until it fails
(3) Boot to the repair CD and get a command prompt
(4)Locate the C:\Panther folder and check the error logs with notepad. Is \Panther used in vista install?
(-or- take the 500GB drive and install as a secondary HDD on another machine and browse the C drive).

I would:
(1) Burn the intel driver to a CD
(2) Run Lenovo vista install
(3) Click load driver button, with intel driver in the CD drive.
(4) Take your choice of BIOS settings. I would start with Raid, then AHCI, then IDE. I really believe this should fix your problem, but I might be wrong.
(5)Keep the win7 repair CD available if you want to go xxx.log hunting on the C drive.

How to Format 24GB mSATA on U410?

I am trying to format my 24GB mSATA drive. Ive just upgraded my HDD to an SSD and no longer have a need for the mSATA caching.
It seems that it is in RAID with my SSD.
Would be great to use it for recovery or another OS.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

An i/O Error mostly means it can't access a physical part of the drive via read/write. It may look like there's a defect on that drive but only way to tell is to run a diagnostic. Try to download and install HD Tune and run an error scan on the mSATA SSD to check its health.
The trick from changing RAID to AHCI without re-installing Windows is to change the registry values first, reboot the system and then change it under the BIOS.

Ensure that you backup your files first.as you may need to re-install Windows in AHCI mode if it doesn't work.

Changing AHCI interface to RAID without reformat

I've read many places that you cannot change your hard drive interface to run in RAID after already installing Windows 7 in IDE or AHCI format without having to erase everything and reformat Windows - however Gigabyte's motherboard has a 3 click feature which works in Windows 7 and I read an edit to the Regedit that might work also
This is to allow me to use SRT and then Intel Rapid Storage to allow my SSD drive to work as cache for my main HDD in RAID format.
I have a MSI Z68A-GD65 (B3) Motherboard and i5 Intel cpu. I don't know if its safe to try to change the system and if it doesn't work I would like assurances it can be corrected if anyone knows about this.
It would be easier if MSI did a BIOS upgrade that supported this feature Gigabyte have on their mobos. BTW, my BIOS is the original that came with it in 2011.
PS: Click BIOS which is a BIOS editor in Windows MSI provide allows to change your IDE AHCI setting to RAID, but is it that simple? Screenshot provided

Hi all you need to do is in under Regedit go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\iaStorV, in right tab right click on start and select modify set 0 instead of 3. Restart your system and enter Bios and select Raid instead of AHCI save exit. When you next boot onto Windows wait a bit you will be prompted to restart your system, if not you will have probably to reinstall Intel Rapid Storage.
