Changing Ramp color in After Effects

Hi all,
I'm still new to AE and currently using step by step guides from books to practice in AE. In one of my practice, I'm creating a text animation with a ramps shader as the background as seen in my attached file here, and according to the book, no matter initial your color choice from your color picker, the ramp color will eventually default to gradations of black and white as seen in my file here. I wonder if there's any way that I can have more control of my color here, so I'll choose the color of my ramp.

When attaching images, use the camera icon or the pix will get caught up in the virus queue. As I'm writing this, it's not yet visible. Anyway, I'm not really sure what you are describing, since you didn't mention what book and chapter and even then it's probably a newer revision which I don't have. There's a million ways to create gradients in AE, so probably you are simply missing something obvious.
- Ramp effect
- Ramp effect, followed by Colorama
- Layer Styles - Gradient Overlay
- Shape Layers with gradient fills
For some specific cases, the effect may require to be applied to a solid, where the other layer, e.g. a text layer acts as the matte. also make sure to adjust the start and end points of the gradients to fall within the dimensions of the layer to be affected.

Changing the language in After Effects cs5

Hello, I'm trying to change the language in After Effects cs5 from German to English on a mac (10.8.5 osx). I've tried going to package contents/resources/AMTlanguages and changing de_DE to en_US but when I restart it and enter the serial number it says its incorrect for this product. I was able to change photoshop without any trouble but does anyone know if AE has a language specific license? help please and thank you!

Any standalone retail package is language specific as dictated by the serial number and installer. Lucky for you, you can easily set AE to English by creating a file called ae_force_english.txt in your user profile's documents folder. the file doesn't need to contain anything, it just needs to be present and named properly.

How to change the color in "blocks" effect

Hi,
I've got a problem with Motion.
I use a "behaviour" effect on my text that is called "blocks".
When I set parameters to default, I see a blue effect with some red blocks in backgroud.
I want to turn this effect into a green effect.
The problem is that when I change the color into green, there is still a strange orange color on some blocks.
I've added all the color parameters (face, shadow...)that I thought it could be due to but nothing changes. I still have this strange color on some blocks.
The strangest thing is that it sometimes becomes ok when I make the changes but when I save and re-open my file in FCP or Motion, it isn't ok.
Has anyone already used this effect and seen that problem?

Text behaviors work by sequencing the Text's parameters.
Try changing the color of your text's outline.
Select the Text tab in the Inspector
Go to the Style sub tab
change the Outline color to green

I have bought a template for after effect on video hive and its expressions do not work because they are in english..

except changing the language and if it's the only solution How can I do that ? just for a week .. I don't want to keep an english version

Adobe Media Encoder CC renders do not reflect changes to Dynamically Linked After Effects Comps

When rendering a Premiere timeline with a dynamically linked After Effects composition, Adobe Media Encoder will sometimes use an older version of the linked composition (even after I have saved changes in the After Effects comp).
For example, if I correct a spelling mistake on some text in After Effects, save the composition, and then add the sequence to the render queue in Premiere, the final output from media encoder still has the old spelling.
If I do a straight export from Premiere instead of adding to render queue, the output is always correct. I've noticed this problem on several different Windows 8.1 systems.
All versions of the software are up to date as of today.
Why is this? Is it something to do with the disk cache in After Effects? Does media encoder have it's own cache that I need to clear?

Hi, I've been having this same issue. Here are some additional things I've noticed about it:
Changes are reflected properly when played back on timeline in Pr CC 2014.
Happens regardless if the dynamic link file was rendered or not, thus deleting the render files does not fix the issue.
The issue can persist through saving, closing, and reopening both AE and Pr.
I'm using OSX 10.9.4, so this is not just a PC issue.
Other than manually watching for every change to be reflected in the render, there is no way to know a problem has occurred. Needless to say this can be incredibly costly.
Please address this quickly, it's completely unacceptable that what we render out could be a different version from what we see on the timeline.
PS Some additional things I will be testing:
Does the issue persist through closing all CC apps, including Media Encoder.
Does rendering directly out of Pr, i.e. not using Media Encoder, fix the issue.

How to change render resolution of After Effects project in Adobe Media Encoder for an H264 preview?

I'd like to render a 1080i comp at half resolution or third resolution in AME to speed up render times for low-res previews. I just had a low-res H264 preview take 5 minutes to encode in AE, and 28 minutes in AME.
This is easily accomplished in the After Effects render settings. However, the "video" option in AME seems to imply the project is encoded at that resolution, not rendered at it.
I went into AE and changed the setting in the composition viewport to "half", but when I queue it up in AME, the "Match Source" button still indicates 1080.
What is the correct method to get the results I want?
I'm currently using AE CC and AME CC on Windows.

Thanks for taking the time to answer this question. Knowing this isn't possible at least narrows my options down. It would be helpful to provide some kind of list of what comp settings carry over into AME from After Effects. Is it essentially everything that is enabled in the Timeline? (I know that motion blur settings do.)
I'll put this in a feature request, but yes, we need the other half of After Effects Render Queue in AME in order for AME to be a good replacement for rendering from AE. I'll give you my thoughts on why Render Settings are essential before you would actually want to render with AME instead of doing so because you have to (either because you want to render in the background, or need a codec that has been removed from AE.)
1. Speed: Simply applying a Render Settings preset is much faster than manually setting motion blur, frame blending, work area, etc.
2. Reliability: Not being able to apply a Render Settings preset at the time of render is a recipe for missing a crucial setting buried in a comp, then having to redo a render and wasting time.
3. Features: As noted above, there is no way to approximate Render Queue's ability to change resolutions at render, which results in a lot of wasted time when that feature is needed.
Render Settings I think are crucial to making AME rendering worthwhile for AE users:
1. Rendering resolution
2. Work Area/Entire Composition toggle
3. Field Rendering (wait, does this mean AME can't currently render to fields?)
4. And PRESET ability these settings, so I'm not doing them manually every time.
I realize that your team clearly doesn't spend the same amount of time I do making low res H264 previews and sending final files out in H264 format, so you don't appreciate the impact of the changes you made. Moving to AME for that stuff is a real inconvenience, but implementing the settings above could help soften the blow.

no, unfortunately adobe only supports platform changes for current software, Order product | Platform, language swap
you could upgrade to adobe cc (and get upgrade pricing) that would allow you to use on both mac and pc.

File size changing when pass through after effects (180Mb file goes in and comes out 33GB on export)

im processing a video recorded of an interview where the lighting was not very good on the interviewee
im brightening up the light on the interviewees face
the file was a 180Mb H.264 file on import
when i export the file its coming out at 33GB in size.... im not sure why this is
i have chosen the default setting "lossless" as the format for export
i just want the file to export the same size and quality as it was when i imported it
what options should i choose for this? AE does not seem to tell me how big the end file will be and it takes 1 hour and half to process this 2 minute interview so it will take me an awfull long time to get to the bottom of this if i try by myself

It doesn't "increase" the file size. You're making a brand new file.
What you put into After Effects has nothing to do with the resulting file. You can have an AE composition with no footage whatsoever and the resulting file will be much larger than 0!
After Effects works internally with completely uncompressed pixel data, so no matter what you toss into it, it produces whatever you tell it to produce. As Mylenium points out, you made an uncompressed final file.
Your original video file is VERY compressed. So, of COURSE uncompressed video is going to look massive by comparison.

Adobe Reader changes windows color scheme after launching

Hi all,
We have been using heavily adobe reader. the problem we have encountered is that after launching adober reader on windows 7 pro, default color scheme changes and it is being displayed as if we are on safe mode.
We could not find a solution so far. Hope you would provide me some info in order to fix it.

Interesting! What was the color scheme prior to launch? Does this problem happen on every launch of Reader X? What if you restore the color scheme and re-launch Reader? If possible can you stick a screenshot of the issue you just described.

FCP + After Effects + Color Workflow Question

Forgive me if this is a naive question. I would like to know what is the best way to work between FCP, Color, and After Effects. This is the first project I'm working on that requires all three applications.
All my shots are done in DVCPro HD and imported into FCP. DVCPro is not really supported in Color so I learned that they should be converted to ProRes (right?). In Color I will be adding a vignette effect and color grading so I know it has to be last otherwise my texts and mattes in AE will look like they're on top of the video.
My problem with that is almost every shot will have an AE effect in it so it's easier to dump the whole timeline into AE using popcorn's XML script. But once I export it from AE and put it back into FCP it is one clip but color correction and effects has to be done differently for each clip and I can't do that in Color with the single AE clip I just rendered. So I'm kind of lost, is my only option to add effects in AE one clip at a time and return them to FCP?
Also am I right that Color only supports Apple ProRes? DVCPro HD hasn't worked so far.

Hello David.
Regarding your question about DVCPro HD support, it is supported as an Importable format, but Color cannot render out in DVCPro HD. Color supports ProRes across the board. Here's a list of supported formats:

After Effects really isn't part of my normal workflow, so I can't really comment on it, other than I've had a lot of problems with 10.0.1 and ProRes. That problem has caused me to eliminate AE from any workflow that I use here.

ExternalObject undefined in After Effects CS3

Hi, we have After Effects CS3 and have developed an external library that we would like to use from Extend Script.
When I launch Extend Script Toolkit and target itself, I can create the ExternalObject.
However, whenever the script runs targetting After Effects, we get the error message that "ExternalObject is undefined".
The Javascript CS3 guide clearly says that the ExternalObject javascript object is supported by all CS3 applications.
Is there some special configuration that needs to be done to enable this in After Effects?

Here's the response from a bug report I made on the issue. Turns out that it is not supported, and the manual is incorrect. Boo!!
It appears that AE CS3 does not support ExternalObject. After Effects CS4 supports it and you can create a ExternalObject with any framework, but you can't do anything useful with that object (even version always returns zero).
Aslo, the syntax should be:

Secondly, plz let me check your system.
1. Did you install the package of Adobe master collection or Creative Suite Production Premium, or each software separated in AE and Premiere?
2. Did you uninstall whole package about that ; if you have, including not only CS5 but also previous package or software was related with Adobe AE and Premiere like CS4, CS3?
3. Also check your any whole local folder like 10.0 folder or user application folder in document about Adobe not deleted by order "uninstall"
4. Then, after reboot, Just install only AE(or Premiere), Only one of Two! by clicking the content in the window of installing package of Adobe.
5. Does opening AE(or Premiere) is ok? -->I wholly believe it won't have any Problem. Just imagine that you got adobe software first.
6. Then, try to install the other.
7. If both AE and Premiere are that opening is good, you are able to install the others of your package.

There are lots of bug fixes and new and changed features in the After Effects CC (12.2) update, and a couple of targeted bug fixes in the After Effects CS6 (11.0.4) update.

I have answered my own question. And as embarrassing as it is. I'll leave it up in case someone else is looking for the same answer.
Windows 7 Home Premium only supports up to 16 GB of RAM. I had to buy the Professional version in order to access all 32 GB of the installed RAM.
It's a pretty silly mistake to make, but there you have it.

Default After Effects script location

Afternoon,
Does anybody know of a way that you can change the default location After Effects will look to on startup to find scripts?
What I would like to do is have a scripts folder on the network that all workstations in the studio all use to load scripts on startup. It would make things a lot easier to maintain parity across our workstations and renderfarm.
I'm sure there is a messy way to do it with aliases and / or custom startup scripts, but wanted to check to see if After Effects could handle it by itself.

What's messy about aliases? If you jsut put an alias in the default folder that points to your custom folder, everything works fine. I do this for plug-ins and scripts so that I can use the same extensions across multiple versions of the application.
