Changing resolution with iPhoto

I work for a small church and we are running into the issue of our photos not being a high enough resolution for printed materials. Is there a way to check and to change the resolution to at least 300dpi? Many thanks in advance!

How do you burn the photos to the CD? You should first crop to the size you want printed and then export to a folder on the desktop using the File->Export->File Export with the following settings:
Type=JPEG
JPEG Quailty=Maximum
Size=Full Size
as seen here. Then burn the folder of files to the CD.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

It doesn't matter.
What matters is the total number of pixels in the image. Screen display defaults to 72 dpi. All that means is that the dimensions of the photo are bigger - longer x wider. The dpi is only set when you decide what size your print is going to be.
For example, if you have a 12 megapixel image: (4,000 x 3,000 pixels) and print that at 100 dpi, then it will be resulting print will be 40 inches by 30 inches (4,000/100 etc)
Print it at 300 dpi and it will 13.3 inches by 10 inches

Image automatically changing resolution with HDR and Photomerge in CS4

I am trying to create Hi Res Panoramas and HDR images using Photoshop CS4. It seems that the resulting image is a much lower resolution than I expected (ie the image has been downsized by 50% and changed to 240 dpi). I can do the smame thing on my laptop with no problem but can't figure out why it will not work on my desktop.
Is there a preference that I have missed?
I am using DNG images processed in lightroom.
Creating the Photomerge / HDR from Photoshop using the automate option.

Aperture changes syncing with iPhoto

Is there any way to make changes to a photo in Aperture and have the changes reflected in my iPhoto library? And Will I be able to revert back to the original if need be?
Or would it just be easier to import my whole iPhoto library into Aperture and forget about iPhoto altogether?

No. There is no two-way integration between iPhoto and Aperture. The integration is designed to assist those migrating from iPhoto up to the more capable application. Iphoto has no ability to read the Aperture library.
What you can do is access the previews from Aperture by dragging them from the Media Browser (iPhoto: File -> Show Aperture Library).
Or would it just be easier to import my whole iPhoto library into Aperture and forget about iPhoto altogether?

Changing dpi changes resolution

Does changing the dpi of an image change the resolution of the image without changing the size?
I have an image that is 300 dpi that I need to enlarge 400% changing the dpi to 75.
I don't think manually changing the dpi to 600 will actually change the clarity of the image when enlarged 400%.
Is that correct?

First, DPI (dots per inch) is different to PPI (pixels per inch) despite the terms very often being wrongly interchanged. Photoshop works with pixels, not printer output dots.

Changing resolution with "Resample" enabled will result in changed pixels, but no change in the physical size (inches/cm/etc.) of the document.
Changing resolution with "Resample" disabled will result in unchanged pixels, but there will be a change to the physical size of the document.
You will not increase the clarity of an image by enlarging it.
The best way to learn what happens is to try things and observe the results.

How do I resize/change resolution of photos from iPhoto when used in iWeb

I am shooting with a 7.1 Mega Pixel Canon to get enough quality to crop and print high quality pictures of my baby daughter and her adventures in the world.
I have a website up made with iWeb, but when I select the photos in iPhoto and go Share / Sent to iWeb / photo page - I get a nice layout of the photos but at full resolution when the thumbnails are selected or the slide show is run. Although nice and sharp, this is a pain for anyone looking at the site even with high speed access.
There must be some way to resize photos, but I have yet to figure that out with iPhoto, let alone iWeb. And as one photo at a time is a pain, there must also be a way to rescale a whole selection of photos that I want to use for a page - say her Disneyworld trip. I can't be the first person to run into this, but I have not found anything out there to point me in the right direction.
Ideally I wold like to create a resized set from the originals - so I can still print and crop in high qulity. I also am not really sure what resolution would be best or easy viewing and download - that's probably subjective. 1200x800 comes to mind but I am open to suggestions.
Perhaps resize is not the right term - changing resolution is probably more accurate, but there too I have not found an answer.

Tried your site on two different browsers, using highspeed broadband; the site is, indeed, extaordinarily slow. We can dissect the thing down to the last file, but it won't change anything, as far as I can see. If it were me, I would host the site on another server. The .Mac servers are just plain slow, period. I think that is the primary problem here. Just my opinion, others may disagree.
I created a new site this past weekend for a new project, and published it to .Mac. It contains a lot of jpeg files in slideshows (along with the usual png suspects!) . After reviewing it a few times, and not being satisfied with page-load speeds, I published to a folder and uploaded the site to space on 1&1 WebHosting.
The page-load speeds TRIPLED. That's right...3X as fast page-load speeds. Even large, linked to files, 3MB+, load within a reasonable amount of time. (seconds)
I still will keep a .Mac subscription, as I like and use all of the other features of the iDisk. But for serious website hosting, I think you will be better 'served' with a remote host. Your money with .Mac is certainly not wasted; the syncing services and other features of iDisk space that integrate with your local files are well worth the yearly fee. Again, only one user's opinion, based on experience.

Changing resolution to 72 dpi using iPhoto

My daughter is in a photography club and she's entering a photo contest. One of the requirements is that all photos must be 72 dpi. Her teacher uses Photoshop and isn't familiar with iPhoto, so he doesn't know how to tell her/us what to do. Any help?

Hi, Bearcat Annie. There are two problems here: 1) iPhoto 4.0.3 and earlier versions don't offer any direct way to change the dpi specification of an image, and 2) the teacher's dpi requirement has no meaning unless it's accompanied by an overall resolution limit, such as 640 x 480 pixels, 1024 x 768 pixels, etc. Has the teacher specified an upper resolution limit?

What format are they? Tiif? Jpeg? You can compress them with a lot of apps - including Preivew and just about any graphics editor out there. I'm not sure that 45mb would crash iPhoto thogh, are yo sure that's the cause? I know that some folks have mentioned pixel dimensions causing issues, as can color profiles.

I have a new MacBook Pro with iPhoto installed. I edit photos, mainly photo orientation via rotating, but when I go back to run a slideshow the changes weren't saved and the photo is back to vertical...please help...thanks

I have a new MacBook Pro with Iphoto installed when purchased. When editing a photo, primarily orientation changes, the slideshow initially displays the photos in proper orientation. However, after leaving Iphoto and shutting down the computer, and then going back to run a slideshow the photo displays back to its' original orientation, that is, the edit-change was not saved. Please help...the program information says all edit-changes are automatically save and therefore there is no save command, but my changes are not being saved...thank you for any suggestions...HM

Can I change the File name of pics when capturing with iPhoto?

Hi, I am a new user of Macbook and Mac OS, so, maybe this is a stupid issue.
I have a sony cybershot and I was wondering if when I capture my pics from the camera with iPhoto I could change the name of the picture file?....or the filename will always be the one of the camera (f.e: DSCXXXXX) or I will have to change the name manually using Finder.
I ask this because when I used to connect my camera into my old pc, windows activated the camera wizard and I could name all the pictures filename as the same and the wizard just capture them to my HD with that name just adding numbers (f.e: I named Miami trip, and the wizard named all of them Miami Trip 001, Miami Trip 002, and so on)

You'll need to rename the files before importing them. So. move the files from the camera to a folder on the desktop (either by drag and drop or using Image Capture) and then use a file renaming utility such as FileList to rename the files. Then continue your import. (iPhoto -> File -> Import to Library)
The reason for this is because Filenames are irrelevant in iPhoto. You can add titles to the Photos, and, on export, use those titles as Filenames (check the possibilities in the File -> Export dialogue). You can also Batch Title photos using the Photos -> Batch Change command. This is what I do - on Import I name the Event (Italy 07) then when the pics are in use the Batch Change command to title the pics.
Are you doing this to make your pics easier to find? There are three ways (at least) to get files from the iPhoto Window.

Changing screen resolution with a button

Hi,
I would like to ask if there is a way for an interface to change the screen resolution of the computer? I am wanting to build an interface that loads an interactive camera that works with processing however I am needing it to be at the resolution 800*900 as the webcam screen is too small on a full 1680x1050 resolution.
Is there a way for the flash application to change the screen resolution with a button click? Are there any alternatives to this?

It is to display a portfolio at my design school for assessment, they will accomodate any necessary things that i may need for assessment viewing so it is very important to me.
Do you know what programs will work with this? What program would i have to install?
I only need to do this for my assessment so it is almost a desperate search for something that would work.

Is it not your Apple ID? Is this a used Mac? If so, the Mac, OS X and the iLife apps are all registered to the original owner of the Mac.
When someone sells a Mac they should erase the Mac and reinstall the most recent version of OS X that came with the Mac. And they should call Apple Care and have the Mac, the OS and the iLife apps disassociated from their Apple ID. Can you call the original owner and request that?

Low resolution in iphoto

Hi,
Each time I transfer photos from my camera to Mac the resolution changes. The photos are large files, yet when I upload to Shutterfly, or burn to a CD I am only seeing the thumbnail size. How can I ensure that the original size of the photos is exported and not just the thumbnail?

How are you uploading? Are you attaching files from the DATA folder in the iPhoto Package File?
Any of the following will yield a full size upload:

Is there a major flaw with Iphoto in regards to organizing and backing up? And how should I proceed??
Here is my story. I have moved roughly 15,000 photos from 7 computers (4 PCs and 3 Macs - basically everyone's computer in the family) onto one external hard drive. The photos were taken by many different digital cameras, are sparsely labeled, and have the most random names and folders. There are a LOT of duplicates. MY MISSION - label and back them up.
The way I normally deal with photos/DATA is this: I plug my camera into my Mac and immediately think about organizing and backing them up. With "Preview" I look at photos (and decide which one I like), create a folder called "where-ever I took these photos" and drag them into that folder. The problem with Iphoto is that you have no ability to control folders, unlike many other applications.
For example, in Itunes you can rename an artist, or even an album, and it will automatically appear in an updated folder. If you alter a photo in Photoshop, it makes you save it is a new file. In Iphoto you cannot make the same "root level" changes without making duplicates. From what I understand, you can place photos into an Album and then export that album (which makes duplicates). Iphoto will rename each duplicate file and then place it in the correct folder. The problem here is I have no idea where the original is to delete it.
Basically I want to create folders called "Trip to Italy 2003" or "Rachel's Wedding" and place all the photos associated with that event in those folders. The problem I run into is that I have a bunch of duplicates. I have heard of a program called Duplicate Annihilator which has gotten favorable reviews. If I import them into Iphoto all the photos are placed in random named folders. I say random because some of the photos were taken on cameras that didn't have the date set correctly. Hence some of my photos will appear in a labyrinth of folders called "Modified / 2001 / Roll 17 / DCM482 / Image25874654.jpg"
I am totally willing to wipe my Iphoto library clean and start again if there is a way to organize the photos as described above. Eventually I will take these folders and save them on a data DVD.

You do not need to delve into the folders within the iPhoto Library via the finder to access any photo. That is all done within iPhoto itself. If you need a photo for use outside of iPhoto read Terence Devlin's treatise on file access. iPhoto is a DAM application - Digital Asset Management, not a folder manager. There's a big difference. You can use keywords, album and smart albums to organize your photos.
If you still have the original files you might consider what I do. I rename each file with the date it was taken using the international date format: YYYY-MM-DD-001.jpg. You can download the demo version ofMedia Expression and automatically rename each folder of photos with the EXIF date and a sequential number. This makes chronological searching and sorting much easier both in iPhoto and the Finder.
If you want to not only manage the photos but the folders then Expression Media will let you do both. It will let you rename files after being imported into a catalog, move them between folders, add ITPC metadata to the files, create virtual albums called Supplemental categories, and much, much more. I use it as my primary DAM and iPhoto for special projects like books, slideshows, calendars, etc.
