Changing scsi id on HBA

hi all,
i'm installing a rac on unbreakable linux. my hardware are two v20z nodes (64_x86) and one 3310 diskarray. the diskarray is configured as one whole, and serves as the shared storage for the RAC.
however my problem now is that i can't get all disks visible on all nodes at the same time and i guess this is necessary when i want to use ocfs2 to configure shared file systems for the datafiles? since this is my assumption, please do correct me if i'm wrong here. i'm coming from solaris/sparc and there it is done that way.
i assume the problem is the scsi initiator id conflict as both HBAs on both nodes have the same id. and since they are on the same scsi bus (necessary for configuring shared storage?) they confict.
trying to change the id is not possible in the bios, since it is an external card, and it doesn't present a magic key combination to enter a configuration menu during bootup. neither is there a dipswitch on the card to change it manually, so i'm only left with the linux to change the scsi initiator.
i've been looking in documentation, newsgroups and even in the source code, but i can't seem to find it. the driver used is qla1280.
so my questions:
- is my assumption correct that i need the whole diskarray (with all its disk) visible to both nodes to configure ocfs2 filesystems? or is there another way?
- if my assumption is correct, does anyone know how to change the scsi initiator id in linux (in the driver)?
many tnx in advance

  • Change scsi hd into ide/ata??

    Hello folks
i just upgraded my good old G3/400 with a sonnet 1ghz zif.
works perfect. a good while ago i decided to get a new hd, so i bought a new ide drive with 120gb (bw only supports max 120gb in once isn't it?) anyway, fine, i still got the scsi 9gb drive in it and i just wonder what to do.
the prices for scsi drives with about 80gb are horrable. what can i do, for now i only have connections for the hd and my superdrive.
    any solutions?
    cya

SCSI and IDE are not mutually exclusive under Mac OS 9 or X. You can run all at once, and add in USB and FireWire and run all those, too.
To run a 9GB SCSI drive, you likely have a PCI controller card in a slot. Its cable would connect to the leftmost drive, if factory installed. Your new IDE drive should fit into the base of "stacking bracket" in the leftmost position. If your Blue & White does not have the "stacking bracket", but instead has the solid three-drive shelf, you may have a Rev 1 "HeartBreaker" Blue & White. These Macs do not generally accept add-on IDE drives graciously, and tend to become flaky and unreliable.
Although adding an IDE/ATA controller card is an option, I recommend buying a used 68-pin SCSI drive and hooking it up to the high-performance SCSI card you already have. The US$60 or more cost of an additional IDE/ATA Controller card may quickly erase any savings from a cheaper IDE drive.

Which SCSI Controller card a do you have? (Apple System Prolfiler can tell you.)

    Hello,
maybe your problem has to do something with loading SLPDA.NLM. If you
cannot get to open Autoexec.ncf then go back to DOS-Mode, rename this
file in C:\nwserver-directory and start again. i have seenthis behaviour
on servers loading SLPDA with no network-communication and they stop
loading at WPSD.NLM. Try to load SLPD.NLM manually when the server is
up. After that shift the line in Autoexec.ncf where you want to load
Slpda.NLM to the end of the file and boot the server again to see what
    happens.
    Good luck

  • Raid card /drive gone NEED HELP

i have a raid card with one drive connected to it. i put a usb/firewire card in today and my computer would not start, so then i went back and uninstalled the card and then it started but my raid drive did not show just my non raid drives. i do not think my raid drive is geting power. any ideas?
bought raid card from owc (other world computing
raid drive does not show in system profiler
the usb/firewire card is from sonnet
this is g4 computer quicksilver 933mhz
    ihave tried
    1. reset pram
    2. disk utility (scan for drives)
    3. change scsi slot
    4. run diskwarrior
    5. ran terminal commands
    please help

There is another area for pre-MDDs but...
The "RAID" card I assume is PATA controller, has firmware in the card to support RAID 0, 1, isn't really a true "hard raid" controller, and probably made by ACard, SIIG or Sonnet and used with PATA/ATA drives.
When you move a drive to some controllers they also may need to be reformatted.
    You should have reset nvram.
Checked for new firmware and whether there are newer drivers (extensions).
If I was investing in a controller for my system today, it would be SATA, probably SeriTek, and either 10K Raptor or 250GB or larger drive.
The trouble buying from OWC is even if it is DOA, they charge 15% and you have to ship etc. but I would return it if you can't erase or partition the drive in Disk Utility after making sure it shows up in System Profiler, and works with your Sonnet Tango.

  • How to keep a Fabric port always enable in a Cisco MDS 9000 Switch?

    Dear members:
I work in Datacenter automation solutions using most part of time Virtualization softwares.
I'm having an interst problem with a server while it is booting thru SAN using a logical volume stored in a EMC DMX4 array.
We are trying to boot a VMWare ESX 4.1 OS, but when OS tries to change HBA BIOS driver to ESX device driver during boot process, the Server's HBA logged off from MDS Fabric that it is connected, ESX can't boot and I got a ESX standard prompt.
I think that problem is becuase ESX 4.1 is taking too long to load Storage Drivers during boot process and the consequences is HBA logged off from Fabric.
I already tried to change FLOGI parameters in HBA and Topology architecture, but I didn't have success.
If a try to boot a Microsoft OS like Windows 2008, I don't have this behavior, and OS can boot from SAN without any problem.
Please, if anyone have any idea about how to keep fabric port always enabled, let me know. Any idea or help is very welcome.
    Best Regards.
    Alexandre Nicolau

  • Slow and heavy UDev(s)

Hi! I've been having a strange and annoying problem on my laptop (Clevo M860TU) for a while now.
My udev is acting up. 99% of boots it starts up numerous times (At this very moment 'pgrep -lu root | grep -c udevd' outputs 100.), hogging up to 25% of my CPU at best. I have an Intel Core 2 Duo P9500 2.53GHz processor, so it not really connected to that as far as I can see. Killing and restarting udev changes only the number of udev's running, the CPU load stays the same, only now htop doesn't seem to be able to tell what actually is hogging it. The only things it shows as using more than 0.0% of CPU is a single udev with a load of 2.0%, gvfs-gdu-volume-monitor with 3-4% and devkit-disks-daemon with 0.1-1% CPU usage.
Other strange thing with udev I'm having is during boot. If I boot the laptop with battery power only, there's about a 50% chance that "Waiting for UDev uevents to be processed" hangs for a few minutes.
A similar problem is reported and discussed here. I tried the same tricks as in that topic, starting with de-blacklisting pcspkr-module. /var/log/errors.log gives only two possible leads:
Nov  1 17:33:24 Hostname kernel: ACPI: I/O resource 0000:00:1f.3 [0x1c00-0x1c1f] conflicts with ACPI region SMBI [0x1c00-0x1c0f]
Nov  1 17:33:29 Hostname pulseaudio[6225]: module.c: Module "module-stream-restore" should be loaded once at most. Refusing to load.
0000:00:1f.3 is SMBUS: Intel Corporation 82801I and pulseaudio is quite self-explanatory *grin* I have no idea what Pulse is doing there, though.
Next thing suggested in the topic is using a trick from this topic. The output I get using that trick is the following, flowing over and over again:
    UDEV[time] change /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1f.2/host1/target1:0:0/1:0:0:0 (scsi)
    UDEV[time] change /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1f.2/host1/target1:0:0/1:0:0:0/block/sr0 (block)
    KERNEL[time] change /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1f:2/host1/target1:0:0/1:0:0:0 (scsi)
    KERNEL[time] change /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1f.2/host1/target1:0:0/1:0:0:0/block/sr0 (block)
I am not sure if there's something other than this right at the beginning of the spammage, but this message keeps repeating over and over again, even after the boot sequence. The message spam stops if I kill udevd, leaving behind only the KERNEL change (scsi) and KERNEL change (block) reposting itself every.. 5 seconds I'd say.
'lspci -s 1f.2' shows that 1f.2 is the SATA controller. Also looking into /dev/disk/by-path/pci-0000/:00/:1f.2-scsi-1:0:0:0, it points to /dev/sr0, so optical drive it is.
Problem is I still have no idea what I should do about it all.
The topic ends being resolved by removing a udevd rule file meant for Creative Zen mp3-players. I don't have the said rule, although there is a similar rule (45-libnjb.rules) for multiple Creative and other mp3-players, removing that changed nothing. I still got the hang-on-boot and the elevated CPU-levels.
Would anyone have any ideas what could be causing this? Note that I am obviously not the only person with the problem, in the above topic nick alienman says he has a similar problem, also depending on whether he is booting with AC power or battery power. He does not spesify though, if the hang while booting takes place at Waiting for UDev uevents or ACPI modules.

  • Scsi offline or reservation conflict errors afer swapping HBAs

We swapped out all of our EMC branded Emulex LP10000 HBAs and replaced them with the Sun branded Emulex LP11000 (SG-XPCI1FC-EM4-Z). We now receive a steady stream of SCSI errors in /var/ad/messages similar to the following:
    Nov 8 13:37:29 fhtulsaps201 scsi: [ID 107833 kern.warning] WARNING: /ssm@0,0/pci@19,600000/SUNW,emlxs@1/fp@0,0/ssd@w50060482d52dd0b7,16 (ssd27):
Nov 8 13:37:29 fhtulsaps201 offline or reservation conflict
These devices are target devices from a remote server and are kept in sync using EMCs RecoverPoint appliances. They are normally in a read write disabled state. I do not have access to SRDF but expect I would get the same errors since SRDF also puts the target devices in the same read write disabled state.
As you can see the messages file fills up rather quickly and is basically unusable.

As a part of the HBA upgrade we applied several kernel patches so at this point I'm not sure if the new HBAs are to blame or one of the patches.
The old HBAs never produced these errors.
I would like to know it there's a way to reduce the logging output from the scsi driver.
    Thanks for any help.

We see the same error, though not nearly in such abundance, on our Clariion systems when they are using "explicit trespass" mode. In this mode the "passive" path is completely inaccessible until a special control message is sent to it. Veritas sends that special control message when the primary path has failed (EMC's PowerPath does the same thing).
I know EMC recommends this because you should never end up with I/O going to the wrong service processor accidentally (a trespass) because it simply won't service such I/O's unless explicitly told to do so (gee, I wonder where the name explicit trespass came from? :)
I'd guess your RecoverPoint devices behave similarly.
The relevant code appears to this this bit from http://src.opensolaris.org/source/xref/onnv/onnv-gate/usr/src/uts/common/io/scsi/targets/sd.c#9589:
       9570           /*
9571            * If the target is not yet ready here (defined by a TUR
9572            * failure), invalidate the geometry and print an 'offline'
9573            * message. This is a legacy message, as the state of the
9574            * target is not actually changed to SD_STATE_OFFLINE.
       9575            *
9576            * If the TUR fails for EACCES (Reservation Conflict),
9577            * SD_RESERVED_BY_OTHERS will be returned to indicate
9578            * reservation conflict. If the TUR fails for other
       9579            * reasons, SD_NOT_READY_VALID will be returned.
9580            */I'm not a SCSI expert by any stretch of the imagination, but it seems to me that either Solaris is misinterpreting the "EACCES" error code or EMC is mis-using it. Could be that there's no good code in the SCSI protocol to say "Yea, I'm here, but I won't talk to you right now" except this one.
This exists in the "sd_ready_and_valid" function which appears to be called any time I/O is attempted to the device if the geometry of the device is not yet known (which it never will be for these standby devices).
So, in summary, if your system can "see" a SCSI LUN which responds to a Test Unit Ready (TUR) with "EACCES" then you're going to be seeing these messages. I think your only hope it to check your systems carefully and find out what process is trying to do I/O to them and fix that process.
    Best of luck!

  • No Operating System - v1.6.2 uses 'Paravirtual' scsi hba

    Hi,
I finally got the v1.6.2 ova to deploy by using the WebClient instead of the NativeClient, however I went to boot it up and it will not boot. The error message is "No operating system found" and the vm's settings indicate that it is using the paravirtual scsi hba. I tried changing to the LSI Logic Parallel but that got the same result. Can anyone confirm what it should be? And has anyone been successful with v1.6.2?
Addendum : the deployment seems flawed. During the deployment wizard it states that two hard disks will be deployed - an 8GB Thin and a 16GB Thick/Lazy. However after deployment has completed there is a hard disk 1 - 16GB Thick and a hard disk 2 - 100MB Thick. I did choose Thick Eager for the disks during deployment but did not (could not) modify disk sizes. So far not having much luck with this fling...
    Cheers,
    Ron

    Hi Ron,
I don't  think it's paravirtual SCSI problem. More likely the deployment is not successful. Can you try a fresh deployment, have disks think eager zeroed, and do not power on after deployment? Once it's done, please verify the VMDKs. Here's what I have on my vSphere host:
    # cd to VM installation directory first.
    $> ls -l *-flat.vmdk
    -rw-------    1 root     root        17179869184 Apr  8 16:50 <VM_NAME>-flat.vmdk
    -rw-------    1 root     root          104857600 Apr  8 16:50 <VM_NAME>_1-flat.vmdk
    $> md5sum *-flat.vmdk
    a4c310c3bd78d40a326b38c9b46abd5d  <VM_NAME>-flat.vmdk
    f67870ca1e0eed6c79b293ec3c54960f  <VM_NAME>_1-flat.vmdk
You might also want to use vmkfstools to check if there is error (vmkfstools --fix check <VM_NAME>-flat.vmdk).
If any of the above doesn't match, you should check /var/log/vmkernel.log and the vmware.log file locates with your VMDK's and see if there is error during deployment (vmware.log will be generated only after first boot).
    Thanks,
    Chien-Chia

  • HBA controller name changes after upgrading to solaris 11.2 from solaris 11.1

we have upgraded OS on control domain from Sol 11.1 to Sol 11.2 . After upgrade controller name of HBAs and NPIV wwns  changed ( like if it is c2 prior to upgrade  , post upgrade controller name changes to  c8). Due to this we have to redo virtual disk mapping for all ldoms hosted on this machine. .  Would it be possible to preserve the HBA controller names across OS versions ? we even observed this issue while upgrading SRU of solaris 11.2 system.  We have to upgrade around 20 systems to solaris 11.2 and with this issue upgrade seems to be a tedious task. Any idea if there is any fix or workaround for it ?

Are your disks only connected to one single HBA?
We use MPXIO to MultiPath over Multiple HBAs. Controller never changed here for the MPXIO devices.
    Best regards,
    Marcel

  • SCSI HBA under Solaris .

    Dear All,
I have Sun Server running Solaris 9 and i also installed Ultra3 SCSI LVD Adapter inside the Server.
Now, i connect the LTO Tape drive to the Server via SCSI Port on the HBA by the correct cable.
Please help to get me the status of the connection between Host and the tape ?. Or have any solaris command to test the connection whether it's connected or Not conected ?
    Thanks
    Scott.

  • HBA SCSI Controller number instance

How do I control the SCSI controller number for an HBA?
Inserted identical HBAs into two Ultra 5 (same PCI slot #1), to begin building a test cluster.
The primary Sun comes up with c1t17d0 the secondary comes up with c2t17d0.
On the secondary I've removed the /etc/path_to_inst and c2t17 links on /dev/dsk & rdsk, rebooted -ar and it still comes up as c2t17...
    Any ideas would be appreciated.

    Hi there,
    you could try this..
    1)
Backup /etc/path_to_inst and then modify the file such that the only
scsi references that exist are for the boot drive. Remove all of the
"pcipsy" and "glm" entries except for the one that is used by the controller
that has the boot drive. KEEP A NOTE OF THE PHYSICAL PATH OF THE CONTROLLER
    YOU WANT TO RENUMBER.
    2)
Remove all /dev/dsk/cN* and /dev/rdsk/cN* where N is the controller number(s)
you want to nuke and possibly the number(s) of the controller that no longer
    exists
    3)
Remove all /dev/cfg/cN for all N EXCEPT the controller with the boot drive.
    4)
Remove /devices for the controller you want to renumber, as indicated
    in step 1.
    5)
Remove /dev/sdNN* that symbolically link to controllers you don't want
anymore. (These are compatibility devices only.)
    6)
    Boot with "-srv" option.
    Regards,
    Chris

  • Scsi HBA driver loading

    Hello all,
My query is, if you install a SCSI HBA driver whether it will be recognized at that time or we need to go for system reboot.
    regards,
    Vinay.

It will be recognized immediately. But if u remove it, the effect will come after rebooting.

  • SOS!! SOS!! HELP ME!!! The mobo won't load/boot windows from the SCSI Drive!!! HELP!!!

Ok so i got the board and the crucial RAM with a new enermax 450W power supply. I am running the 1MB A64 3400+ CG on this board.
I am using the Seagate cheetah 15.3K SCSI drive with a LSI 21320 SCSI controller
    (http://www.lsilogic.com/products/ultra320_host_bus_adapters/lsi21320.html )
I am also running a IDE drive on the primary IDE channel set as slave.
I went to the bios and changed the boot order to use the SCSI HD as the first boot device and proceed to intall windows XP. I pressed F6 to install the SCSI drivers and everything went fine until the reboot after all the files has been copied. I would get an error message saying something like:
"NTLDR cannot find boot drive etc"
I have no idea what to do...i tried everything and i am 100% sure that its not my SCSI HD or SCSI card.
    PLZZZZ HELP ME!!!!!!! PLZZZ HELP!!!!!

Found it set your boot order to bootable add in card first in the screen shown here courtesy of HardOCP : http://www.hardocp.com/image.html?image=MTA4MjM1MDg3NWxrOFNyWHJRcTNfMl8yNl9sLmdpZg==
    That should do ya.
Also be sure that the LSI controller is configured to use the Seagate drive to boot from. There is usually an option of which channel to boot from in the HBA BIOS.
