Changing server roles

Hello,
I have a production SP2010 farm containing 1 WFE, 1 APP & a SQL cluster. The SP servers are not in NLB. The service applications deployed on the APP server are enterprise search, sts, state service, web analytics & wss usage.
Now to achieve high availability, I would like both the servers to be load balanced & each of them performing wfe+app role. Please let me know if this approach is good. If yes, then i'm not sure how this can be done without having a downtime. Can
someone guide me please? Any help is appreciated!

The only real difference between a WFE and an APP server in SharePoint is the set of service applications running on it.  By definition any server running the Windows SharePoint Foundation service is a potential WFE.  So really its just a matter
of redistributing the service applications across both servers and then putting some kind of network load balancer in front of the two servers.  Most of the service apps can be added to the other server using Services on Server in Central Admin.  But
there are some services like User Profile Sync that can only be started on one server and others like Search that can only be redistributed using PowerShell.  If done carefully all of this can be accomplished with little or no downtime.

  • Selecting VHDx as storage for File Server Role (Failover Cluster 2012 R2)

Is it possible to select an already existing (offline) VHD or VHDX as storage when creating the "File Server" role? Reason I want to do that is because I already have a file server setup as a virtual machine and causing issues so my company
decided to make the change towards a File Server role.
    Thank you
    David

    Hi David,
Do you mean you configured it to file server failover cluster via "High Availability Wizard" ?
I think you need to choose a shared volume between two nodes to achieve high availability .
Please refer to following link :
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc731844(v=WS.10).aspx
If you do not select a shared volume , I think there is no difference than sharing a mounted VHDX file on a standalone file server .
I would suggest to copy these files to CSV and share them .
    Hope it helps

  • Trying to change server to be a PDC; reverts back to Standalone Server

I'm trying to get my Leopard server to run as a PDC for windows authentication, but when I change the role from "Standalone Server" to "Primary Domain Controller" and click the save button, after authenticating with the "diradmin" account the changed settings all revert back to "Standalone Server" and nothing gets changed. Any clues as to what I need to do? The server is fully updated to 10.5.3, with all other software updates as well.

    Hi Topher
I'm guessing you're referring to the post? Well the figure has gone up a fair bit since then. My overall total is quite high as I have been installing servers since 10.2.
FWIW my general rule of thumb is:
    1 Format drive, install server
2 On Restart Server Assistant launches (see linked post) don't start any services using Server Assistant
3 Server Assistant does start VNC and enables SSH and the Root Account
Depending on your view SSH and Root are potentially a security problem, deal with these later on.
4 Server Assistant writes settings and preps the server for first use
5 Don't launch WGM or Server Admin. If Server Admin launches, quit it
6 Manually download the latest OS update, don't use Software Update
7 Install this and on successful restart run Software Update again and install the rest of the updates
8 Make sure server is fully up to date before launching Server Admin
9 User server's .local name to log in initially
10 Enable and Configure DNS Service first
I can't stress this enough but if you devote time and energy on this before doing anything else it can prevent a lot of hassle and problems later on. DNS does not have to be running on the Server itself. If you have another server for example you can configure DNS Services on that. You could even use 3rd-Party DNS Software and install on a client machine for example. An old Graphite G4 with DNS Enabler installed is good enough. There are PC equivalents you could use as well. This approach does not require anything in terms of processing power, large drives or even vast amounts of RAM. Reliability and correct configuration is the key.
11 Test and Qualify the DNS Service before moving onto anything else.
Once you are happy enable AFP and SMB. Create a test user in the local node and see if you can access the default share points from a client. Try it with both protocols. Don't be tempted to delete the default share points either. You'll have serious problems if you do.
12 Enable the Open Directory Service
13 Promote to Open Directory Master
If DNS is perfect the Kerberos Realm and search base fields should autofill themselves with information based on the domain name defined in the DNS Service. For example an FQDN of myserver.mydomain.com would result in MYSERVER.MYDOMAIN.COM for the Kerberos Realm and dc=myserver,dc=mydomain,dc=com for the Search Base. I always use the default diradmin name rather than any other. You should not use the local administrator account name
Launch Directory Utility and verify the loopback address (127.0.0.1) is entered as a new configuration. Access Server Admin's File Sharing window and enable the Users folder to automount for home directories. Quit out of Server Admin and launch WorkGroup Manager
Try and get into the habit of only having one or other of the Server Applications open at any one time on the server itself. Its OK to have both open if you are administering the Server remotely if you install them on a client
Authenticate to the /LDAPv3/127.0.0.1 node and you should see Directory Administrator UID 1000 already waiting for you. Create a user and select Advanced. You should see the afp url for the default Users folder. Click create home now and Save. Navigate to the Users folder and you should see a home folder created for that user, inspect the contents of this folder and you should see the usual home folder folders. Quit out of WorkGroup Manager
Launch Server Admin select SMB and go for promotion. Supply diradmin as the user name and its password and you should have the server acting as a Primary Domain Controller
Everything can be achieved using the GUI. There should be no need to resort to the command line although if you want to - as you well know - you can
As for your question? No I have not seen any problems with the 10.5.3 update. The 10.5.2 update has given me a problem on a handful of occasions. The problem was traced - eventually - to failing hard drives.
I apologize for the long post but who knows you might find it useful?

  • Sharepoint 2013 Web server role placement

We are in the process of deploying sharepoint 2013, and I have a question on deploying the web server roles.   Where should they be ideally placed, on the internal network or on the DMZ.
If they are placed on the DMZ, can the web server roles be on workgroups or do they have to be always on the domain.  Can you join a work group computer to sharepoint farm, I assumed it always had to be on the domain.
Majority of our sharepoint users will be internal, but we have external partners who we want to access the sites as well, thats why we are thinking DMZ.
Any advise on the above questions

Yes, that is correct. You need those ports.
The WFEs communicate with every other server in the farm, as well as your Active Directory, DNS, and SMTP servers. This includes all supporting infrastructure services such as LDAP, Kerberos (if you're using it), etc. I believe SMB is only if you are indexing
    fileshares.
It does seem like quite a lot for a web server, however a SharePoint WFE is not just a web server.
Here is the list of ports:
    TCP 80, TCP 443 (SSL)
Custom ports for search crawling, if configured (such as for crawling a file share or a website on a non-default port)
Ports used by the search index component — TCP 16500-16519 (intra-farm only)
Ports required for the AppFabric Caching Service — TCP 22233-22236
Ports required for Windows Communication Foundation communication — TCP 808
Ports required for communication between Web servers and service applications (the default is HTTP):
    HTTP binding: TCP 32843
    HTTPS binding: TCP 32844
net.tcp binding: TCP 32845 (only if a third party has implemented this option for a service application)
Ports required for synchronizing profiles between SharePoint 2013 and Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) on the server that runs the Forefront Identity Management agent:
    TCP 5725
    TCP&UDP 389 (LDAP service)
    TCP&UDP 88 (Kerberos)
    TCP&UDP 53 (DNS)
    UDP 464 (Kerberos Change Password)
For information about how to synchronize profiles with other directory stores, see User
Profile service hardening requirements, later in this article.
Default ports for SQL Server communication — TCP 1433, UDP 1434. If these ports are blocked on the SQL Server computer (recommended) and databases are installed on a named instance, configure a SQL Server client
alias for connecting to the named instance.
Microsoft SharePoint Foundation User Code Service (for sandbox solutions) — TCP 32846. This port must be open for outbound connections on all Web servers. This port must be open for inbound connections on Web servers
or application servers where this service is turned on.
Ensure that ports remain open for Web applications that are accessible to users.
Block external access to the port that is used for the Central Administration site.
    SMTP for e-mail integration — TCP 25

  • Best Server Role for Web Applications

    Hi,
I'm running SQL Server 2008 R2 Express and using Microsoft SQL Server Manager Studio to administer it.  I have a web application that does read, add, update, and delete to the database and I am currently using the sa account - which is of course not
a good idea.  I want to create a new user but I don't know what the best practice is for web applications and also security.  The options I have are:
    bulkadmin
    dbcreator
    diskadmin
    processadmin
    public
    securityadmin
    serveradmin
    setupadmin
    sysadmin
    Thanks.

    Hi mark_sti,
Based on my understanding, you want to create a new user of the database. Using this new account, a web application could read, add, update, and delete the database.
The options you provide are fixed server roles. For more information about fixed server roles, please refer to this article:
    Server-Level Roles.
In this scenario, you need db_datareader fixed database role and db_datawriter fixed database role. Db_datareader fixed database role can read all data from all user tables. Db_datawriter fixed database role can add, delete, or change data in all user tables.
To add two database roles, you should map the login to the database which is used by a web application in Login Properties. Then create a new database user, check Db_datareader fixed database role and Db_datawriter fixed database role on Membership page of
Database User. About permission of different database roles, please refer to this article:
    Database-Level Roles.
If you have any question, please feel free to ask.

  • E2010 - steps to replace physical mailbox server role

We have two virtual CAS, two virtual Hub and one physical MBX role, no DAGs, CAS & Hub are on a hardware load balancer, all are in the same site. The MBX server is coming off lease soon and I'm wondering what the best procedure is to setup the replacement
server, import any customizations which may be on the current MBX role, etc and decomission the old server. Prefer to keep the same IP & name if feasible.
    Thanks!

    Hello,
Do you mean you want to create a virtual Mailbox server which replace the physical mailbox server role? If so, you can add a virtual Mailbox server in a existing domain, and then move mailbox to new mailbox server. Besides, you also change the RPCClientAccessServer
Attribute (CAS array FQDN) on new Mailbox Databases.
Because you deploy CAS NLB, the outlook client still connect to CAS NLB.
Besides, you need use difffernet IP address and name when you create a virtual Mailbox server.
If I have any misunderstanding, please free let me know.

  • Create user defined server role

    Hi,
    Could anyone help me out.
I want to create a user 'passadmin' the user must be defined a server role so that the user can only change the password for the other users(logins). My environment holds all sql server 2000,2005,2008,2008r2, 2012. what type of server role can be provided.
Since that user holds security admin as of now(but the customer wants the user to edit logins not to delete or create users(logins)).
    Thanks.

    Hello ,
Role definition will be found on the below :
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms188659.aspx
Create 2 roles  say 1. Super admin :role that have all privilege including changing pass.
    2. and another role don't have password change but privilege as required
    3.Create user based on those.

i have successfully advertised the console through Citrix, and performance was pretty good. if you're looking to consolidate your install base, or service users across the WAN, this is a good method. you might consider
    RemoteApp
    style deployment.
i'd be careful when adding it to an existing RDP or Citrix environment, since the console is pretty memory hungry. 1-2 GB per console is not unusual, but you should expect at least some of that to be binary image memory that won't need to be duplicated between
    user sessions.

Health configuration in Lync Server 2013 is built around System Center Operations Manager and the use of Lync Server Management Packs. These Management Packs include a number of new features and enhancements, including:
    Feature
    Description
    Synthetic Transactions
Windows PowerShell cmdlets that can be run from various locations to ensure that end user scenarios such as sign-in, presence, IM, and conferencing are readily available to end users.
    Call Reliability Alerts
Database queries for Call Detail Records (CDR). These records are written by Front End Servers to reflect whether end users were able to connect to a call or why a call was terminated. These queries result in alerts that indicate when a wide range of end
users are experiencing connectivity issues for peer-to-peer calls or basic conferencing functionality.
    Media Quality Alerts
Database queries that look at Quality of Experience (QoE) reports published by clients at the end of each call. These queries result in alerts that pinpoint scenarios where users are likely to be experiencing poor media quality during calls and conferences.
The data is built upon key metrics such as packet latency and loss, metrics that are known to directly contribute to call quality.
    Component Health
Individual server components raise alerts by using event logs and performance counters. These alerts indicate failure conditions that can severely impact one or more end user scenarios. These alerts can also indicate a variety of other failure conditions,
including services not running, high failure rates, high message latency, or connectivity issues.
    Dependency Health
Failures can occur for a variety of external reasons. The management packs now monitor and collect data for some of the critical external dependencies that might indicate severe issues, including IIS availability, CPU and memory usage of servers and processes,
    and disk metrics.

It looks like you may have extracted the files to C:\sp2013. Can you try installing from a mounted ISO instead? Can you also validate that this is Server 2012 and not 2012 R2?

  • Prerequisiteinstaller.exe error - unable to install Application Server Role, Web Server (IIS) Role

Windows Server 2012 R2 running on Hyper-V VM.  File services, App server & IIS roles installed
    SQL Server 2012 installed
    Tried:
kb 2765260 method 1 which is kb 2771431 which ends with "not applicable to computer"
kb 2765260 method 2 with no effect (this was power shell commands for PC's connected to the internet)
One post suggested "aspnet_regii - enable -i" but my OS doesn't have aspnet_regii on it (not sure what that implies)
One post suggested ServerManagerCmd.exe needed to be installed which sounds true as shown below (but where do I find this exe?)
There are some errors in the log file,  I only included the portions where the errors are listed.  The initial lines are at the top of the log file, then I skipped to the section where the other errors were.  I can include the whole log if
    it becomes necessary.

I'm presuming the first 2 errors are OK and just indicate optional startup modes for prerequisiteinstaller.exe
The 2nd set of errors seems more serious.  I don't see ServerManagerCmd.exe on my PC that's listed in the error
I don't understand the last error which I'm supposing triggered the listed error even though there are other errors in the log.
Many of the existing posts don't match the configuration I'm using, and the ones that do match didn't seem to provide a usable answer.  Any help is appreciated.  Do these problems exist using Sever 2012 Standard?  I will try that, but would
like to resolve the issue here with R2.
    Thanks.
    Best Regards,
    Alan

ServerManagerCMD.exe is a deprecated utility and (as far as I know) is only found on Server 2008 versions, so I'm surprised it's needed for the preinstaller.  Are you trying to install SharePoint 2010?
Running this page through Google Translate should give you an clearer idea on getting this installed.

  • App+IIS server role, WCF data problems with Shrepoint Foundation 2013 install on 2012 R2

    Hi
I am having tremendous trouble installing Sharepoint Foundation on a Windows 2012 R2 domain controller.
The server has just been added to our domain, promoted and this is the first piece of software I am trying to install. I had run Windows Update after joining it to the domain and before making it a member server before it was promoted.
I had real problems getting AppFabric to install but that is now done. However when I run the Sharepoint prerequisite installer (As Administrator) a results screen is displayed stating there was a configuration error during the installation of the Application
Server Role, Web Server (IIS) Role. It also says that the installation of Microsoft WCF Data Services 5 was skipped.
I manually added the Application Server Role.
I have manually installed WCF Data Services, which was successful.
    I have used this page
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2765260/en-gb to try and get around the Application Server and IIS Roles error. The hotfix quoted on that page is not applicable to this system. I had to run a DISM command to create an image from the OS installation media
before the Powershell commands would work.
Next, I rebooted the server and ran the prerequisite installer again as recommended. However, exactly the same problems are reported.
Can anyone help me with this, please?
    Thanks.

SharePoint is not supported to be installed on a Domain Controller (see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2764086). You'll need to find another server.
But regardless, with SharePoint 2013, you need SharePoint 2013 with SP1 in order to install on Server 2012 R2.

    Hi Awen,
Please open Server Manager > Roles > see if Web Server (IIS) has been installed.
If installed, I’d recommend you refer to Abdel’s method in the link below. He encountered the same issue when install SharePoint 2013 on Windows Server 2008 R2 and fixed the problem. For your reference:
