Changing speed midway through clip in Motion

I have an 8-second clip in Motion that I've animated and added effects to, and would now like to speed it up. But I don't want the entire clip's speed to increase, I'd like it to run at normal speed for the first 4 seconds, then ramp up dramatically so that the last 4 seconds play in under 2 seconds.
I know there is a way to alter a clip's speed in FCP, but that won't help me here. The clip I'm trying to speed up is part of a really complicated composite I'm building in Motion and I need each clip in the comp to speed up at different times with different rates.
There MUST be an easy way to do this in Motion, right?

Put everything in a group, clone the group, turn off the group, and apply a Set Speed retiming behavior. Trim the behavior to the section you want and set the speed you want.

  • Any way to change speed of a clip in "over-write edit" mode?

I want to change the speed of a clip in the timeline without having to lock all the other tracks or having to move the other following clips out of sync. For example I have a clip which lasts for 1 sec, which I want to change to 3 secs. Normally when I do this in the timeline the other clips on the same video tracks which follows, will move their position..... How to change speed in "over-write edit mode"?

I think it's even easier to just match frame the "source file"... put your playhead on the clip you want to speed change in your sequence. Then type optioncmdf. Perform the speed change in the Viewer, then simply cut it in... Might help to put it up above the older, use the double arrow selection tool facing right to move the clips past this change later... pull the upper track speed changed clip down over the old, and viola.
Gotta say though, it's a lot easier to perform the speed change in the Viewer, and edit it all in as you go rather than doing it after you've put the clip in a sequence. (not always possible to determine what the speed change should be maybe, but sure easier.... FCP 7 handles this problem a lot better for sure, and worth the upgrade price if your machine is compatible.

  • Quickest way to change speed but not clip duration

I'm trying to determine the fastest method for changing the speed
of a clip already in the timeline, but not the clips duration. Primarily, slowing a clip down.
The best I've come up with so far is to put the timeline playhead over the
clip and hit X to get the clips IN and OUT points placed in the timeline. Then,
drag the clip into the Browser, effectively making a copy of it there. Then bring the clip into the Viewer, then hit APPLE J to bring up the speed change window, affect the change, then overwrite the change you've made in the viewer back down into the timeline where you placed the original IN and OUTS. Seems like alot of step.
Is there a faster way? Any change I try to make in the timeline itself results
in a clip duration change. The only other way I've found it to use the time remap tool put that is even more complicated and is alot less exact when trying to make something, say, 50% slower.
    Any input would be appreciated.

Another, close but not quite there method I've tried is the TIME REMAP tool
that lives with the SLIP AND SLIDE.
I can affect speed changes, and see what percentage speed change I'm
trying to make, but it wants to change speed on both the left and right side
of the clip. In other words, I can't place the timeline playhead or Time remap tool at the beginning or end of the clip and only effect the speed of the entire
clip unless there is no clip adjacent to the clip I'm trying to change.
Otherwise it changes the speed as I want for 99% of the clip and then during
the last several frames I've accidentally sped up up those frames. I can't position it to just change the speed for the entire clip.

  • How to Change Speed of One Clip Without Effecting Everything Else

I'm sure there's a way. I'm reworking a music video I shot and edited, which did very well in some local contests here in NYC, considering it was the only unsigned band. Now, after the shameless plug: I want to change the speed of a handful of clips and when I do, of course, all the clips on the timeline move with it. I then have to drag everything back. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    FCP 5.0.3

I read about this somewhere. . . let's see if I can remember:
in the T/L, park on the edit, instead of match frame, do a match source file which is optioncommandF. This loads into the viewer, hit command J for speed - set speed, then edit back into T/L. Repeat for your other clips.
Just go back to the bin and check that your source clip hasn't had the speed change saved to it.

  • Any way to change speed of a clip without changing the pitch?

When I do the command-J and lower the speed, the pitch lowers which I do not want.

    I don't think that's possible.
Think about it: when you slow down sound you are also slowing down the frequency of sound, making it sound lower and slower. The only way to slow it down and not change the pitch would be to take little sections of it and keep them apart from each other over a long period of time. However, this would not sound like your original audio file.
I don't know what you are looking for. Can you imagine a way in your head to slow down the audio, but not make it change pitch?
The only thing I can think of would be to slow it down normally, then try to correct the pitch using one of FCE's audio filters.

  • Audio stops midway through clip

    I have a Canon HF100 HD videocamera.
I use a cardreader to transfer footage from the camera to a folder on my computer.
I started a new project, used the AVCHD full HD setting, imported 9 files into the project.
On one of the clips that's 11 minutes long  the audio stops after 1 min 28 secs.
That same clip plays fine with Windows media player. The other 8 clips also play fine with Premiere from the project timeline, from the previewer  and with media player.
Any thoughts about what might be happening here would be appreciated.

    You are most welcome.
With muxed Audio & Video, I use Adobe Audition to rip the Audio, then do any editing required, and Save_As a PCM/WAV @ 48KHz 16-bit, for Import into my NLE (Non Linear Editor).
Especially with AC3 (a form of MPEG Audio), which has already been compressed once, I use PCM/WAV to keep from compressing again. That is also the best Audio file to Import into Premiere.
Note: the free audio-editor, Audacity, can usually rip the Audio Stream and Save_As WAV (Uncompressed), which is the same thing, just with a slightly different name. For anyone new to Audacity, our tireless MOD, Steve Grisetti, has written, or co-written, several good tutorials, which are available on Muvipix.com. I cannot remember if those are free tutorials, or if they are free only to Muvipix subscribers, but I recommend those highly.

  • Best way to change speed of clips

Hey, I want to change speed of clips, both faster and slower in one clip. What is the best way to do that preserving the quality? I am still learning FCP so my apologies, and I had a hard time finding anything on here through search.

    Jerry's right...
    Take a look at this:
    http://homepage.mac.com/captmench/SlowMo3.mov
Two frames each of FCP and Shake at 50%. Use your arrow keys to go frame by frame. First frame is normal, second is interpolated. Look at the background!!
Creative cow should have the whole tutorial online soon... I'll post back with the link when they do.
Also, for time remap -- shake's got that under control too... but for now, look at this:

  • Can't change clip duration Motion 5

I have tried all of the work arounds I have been able to find in the Support Commnity and still I can't change the duration of source clips in Motion 5.  I have trashed plist, rebooted, repaired permisions, changed timing of project, changed name of clip, used the Timeline clock instead of the Instpector window.  Cleared all In / Out points and reset them to slightly different values. I have changed Timing to Variable and back again.  I can open clips in a new project and change duration.  I have opened new project and copied some layers from working project, the problem persists.  Is reinstall the option left available to me?

    BenB,
The specifics: Motion 5.0.4 Timeline is set to 6 minutes, the Media is 5:59;21 (QT,mp4, H264,1280x720, 24fps). Imported via File Browser into Layer Group (Group In / Out points are 0 and 6 mins, as is Play Range).  At one time the clip was in it's full duration.  Afterr a crash / restart it is only 01:52;27.  I can not Drag the clip to its full length. I cannot change it's duration thru the Inspector, not the Timeline Clock.
In an effort to isolate the issue I opened a new Project (same time setttings as original Project, imported the clip, which plays to it's full duration, and then, one at a time, copied and pasted all Filters and Parameters and Objects from the original Project; all play fine.  Then I copied the original Layer Group in it's entirety to the Test Project, and the clip is still limited to 01:52;27.  I then used Replace Media to select a random clips (same format) with varying Duration (all longer than 01:52;27) and got the same result every time; Duraton 01:52;27. Not one element of the Test Project has an In / Out set to anything other than the full Duration of the Project.

  • Podcast how to change speed from 1.5x to 1x speed without having to go through 2x, 3x etc?

Podcast how to change speed from 1.5x to 1x speed without having to go through 2x, 3x etc?

    Whereas I need to be
able to go from disc 1/track 1 to disc 1/track 2,
instead the iPod goes from disc 1/track 1 to disc
    2/track 1.
Right click on any of these files and do a Get Info. Notice that there is, in fact, a Disc number field. So you can make disc numbers 1/10, 2/10 and so on.
iTunes and the iPod are both smart enough to recognize that there are disc numbers there and act correctly. So it'll start with Disc 1, play all that disc, then go to Disc 2, and so forth. It's just a matter of having correct disc number tags.
You can tag disc numbers for a whole disc at once. Simply select all the songs in a single disc (hold SHIFT or CTRL while selecting the songs), right click, Get Info, and you get the mass tag editor screen. Add the disc number info for this disc, and it'll tag that info to all those songs. Repeat for each disc.

  • How to change the speed of a clip without frame blending?

    Hi,
I changed the speed of a clip to 200%. I expected Premiere to drop every second frame. Instead, there is some frame blending making my progressive footage interlaced. For some reason, the frame blending cannot be disabled by using the Use Frame Blending option.
How can I make Premiere simply dropping every 2nd frame?
    Thanks in advance!

In my test, all I need do was right click the clip and make sure Frame Blend was not checked.

  • Can't change speed on clips in timeline - get error message

In Final Cut Pro 5.1.2, when I try to change the speed of clips in the timeline I get the error message "Unable to complete command. A conflict occurred during a trim operation." I have changed the speed of many clips in this project previously, but it suddenly won't do it now. I have searched for a solution but can't seem to find it. Any help would be appreciated.
Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

You could go next door and search the forum there. Or you could search for the answer here. It comes up pretty often.
When you change the speed of a clip it changes the duration of the clip, which ripples the sequence. That changes its duration. Sometimes changing the duration/clip speed will move things in the timeline. Sometimes when you try to move things in the timeline, overlapping clips or other things bump into each and prevent the sequence from rippling. This is most common cause for the error message you're seeing.

  • IMovie 09 - Slow motion and speed adjustment of clips

I was trying to adjust the speed of my clips in a project. When I double clicked on the clip, it told me that I needed to convert the clip before I can adjust the speed. So, I click the button to convert the clip but it doesn't allow me to adjust the speed.
Any ideas out there? Anyone come across this? Is there something wrong with my clip? Help...

This has been brought up before here.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1900630&tstart=0
It seems to be a combination of codec types and footage fps that causes this. Jon Walker did indepth test in that thread.
For example, interframe codecs like MPEG4 seems to prefer conversion. Intraframe codec movies (AIC, PhotoJPEG...) are less picky, but they need to be in NTSC compatible fps. (29.97 and 23.98, instead of 30 and 24.) Above thread was about a Quicktime movie from LX3 camera with 24fps. At its native 24fps it needed to be converted before speed change, but after conforming fps to NTSC friendly 23.98 in Cinema Tools, it became speed adjustable without conversion.

  • Pasting Speed Change attribute to multiple clips

Since the FCP7 upgrade, I can no-longer paste speed changeattribute onto multiple-selected clips and have them ripple accordingly downthe timeline. I often have to match my video track time to the audio track timeand normally do the math to find what percentage the clips have to belengthened, change the speed on the opening clip, copy that clip, select theremaining clips, and paste the speed attribute to the selected clips. Before 7,they would change speed as well as length, now pasting the speed attribute onlychanges the speed and not the length of the selected clips, even when 'Ripple'is checked...
it's a serious time killer to have to do them one at a time...
This issues has been posted by atleast 2 other posters and hasnot received any replys.  Pleasehelp us.
    thanks

Sorry KV, I don't think you can do that anymore. Most folks really didn't like the old speed handling functionality pre FCP 7 and were seriously pleased when it was reinvented ... unfortunately "you can't please all the people all the time". Why not just nest the video track and then apply a single speed change to the whole nest?

  • Changing Speed of clip in timeline in a specific wqay

I realize there are a variety of ways of affecting
a change to the speed of a clip already in the timeline,
but I'm trying to figure out how to do it in one very specific way:
If I have 3 clips (A,B,C) and I want to change the speed
of B so that it is slower, but not expand the clip from
it's original length (meaning it will still occupy the
same spot, duration and length in the timeline), is there a way of accomplishing that just by punching a specific figure
in somewhere (i.e. make it move at 50%).
I know about fit-to-fill, time remap, right clicking a clip
and changing speed. However, I don't want the clip to
expand past it's spot in the timeline, just play slower in the spot it occupies.
The closest I've come is going into the time remap tool and lowering the end keyframe so it moves slower, but this is
imprecise. I want to be able to punch in 50%, or 60% somewhere and have it take, without expanding. The time remap tool won't let me punch in 50%, although that indicator moves when I drop the ending keyframe down a little.
Can what I'm describing be done, and if so, how? Thanks.

Match frame back to the original media. Slow it down, then cut it back in.
You cannot slow down the clip in the timeline without it expanding. You are telling FCP to take the existing clip and make it longer...of course it will expand in size. It doesn't know that you don't want it to do that. It assumes (rightly so) that you want the clip, with the IN and OUT points you designated, to be slower. Keeping it in the same spot on the timeline means cutting off the head or tail of the clip...losing points you told FCP you wanted.
Simple to just load the clip into the viewer, slow it down to the speed you want, then cut it in.

  • Change speed problems

    Hello everybody,
I just updated to OSX 10.8.4 and since then i'm having problems with 2 things:
everything in my FCP 7 works well, except when i try to change the speed of a clip, the window doesn't open. It doesn't appear and i can't do anything anymore. It's not in a second screen, I can't enter, ... Nothing! It doesn't say that FCP doesn't react anymore... only the modify button in the top bar is blue as if it's working.... it's always like that. If i do it by shortcut, or if i select it in the menu, or if i do it by second mouse click. I am able to do it in the motion menu of the clip...no problem then.
second problem i have is that my cmpressor doesn't open anymore. It looks like it's opening, but nothing appears.
I tried to reinstall FCP and Compressor, but not working.
can anybody help me? r anybody had the same problem?
    thx!
    k

Well, it's a little late, but this is one of the reasons to have your startup drive cloned so you can restore it to a working state if an update, upgrade or install sends things south.
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2494
Have you tried resetting your fcp preferences
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2491
If this doesn't fix the problem, you could try sending the shot to motion.  You could aslo try changing the speed in the motion tab of the viewer.
