Changing tags impossible (because of suggestions)
Hi.
I'm using iTunes 11 on a MBP. I had the follwing problem in earlier versions of iTunes too.
When i try to change the tags (genre, artist, ...) of multiple files i'm sometimes ending up not beeing able to do it, because the auto-suggest feature doesn't allow me to type my own text into the field. Instead it suggests some text that i cannot override with my own text.
This happens only under certain circumstances. It actually only happens, if the second character of the suggestion is an corresponding "umlaut" character. (a->ä, o->ö, u->ü). Let's say i want to rename the composer tag of a bunch of mp3's to "Hans Zimmer"... after typing "Ha" it suggests "Hände ..." at this point i have no way of overriding the suggested text - i can leave it or delete it, but i can't change it.
I feel like this is a bug that has to do with umlaut-characters in genre/artist/album names. If this is true, where can i report this bug officially?

BTW, is there a way to change the view to a plain list in iT11? Managing and selecting multiple files for tagging ist kind of clumsy in the "Picture plus 2 columns per album" layout.
I had reported this as a bug long ago. Not fixed yet in this iTunes. But you can get around it. It feels stuck, I know. But hit the down arrow key or just click at the end. You can back delete over the wrong information.
Another trick I found is to click inside and selectively add spaces. This lets iTunes know that the info is different. Then you can edit it all. It can be done. But - yes - once there is a previous string with one of those foreign characters and the auto-suggest throws it before you, it seems like there's nothing you can do about it.

We migrated a server (ldap and file serving) to some new machines, which have new names. We've got all of the login and file sharing functionality working on the new machines, but wherever we have a mount of a share in the Login Items for a user, we can't get the old machine out of the Login Items. It's not fatal, but it does make login take a lot longer because it has to fail first.
We can mount the share from the new server, and save THAT in a NEW Login Item just fine -- it's just that when you click on the old defunct one the minus sign is greyed out, and the mouseover says "You cannot change this item because it's managed by your system administrator." There is a yellow triangle next to the item in the list. Went into the user's ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginitems.plist and it's not in the file. The /Library/Preferences don't have anything that looks like a plist of the right name.

Changing tag selection makes folder jump
Today at a children's party, I took 171 shots.
After loading to PSE4 Organizer, I tagged them with 1 to 5 stars.
I then wished to review my ratings by looking at all the 5 star shots (of which there were only 2) together, then the 4 star shots and so on.
The trouble is whenever I changed my tag selection, Organizer would jump to another folder. It did this no matter how I checked or unchecked "Show all Files" and "Show all Folders" on the Folder pane pop-up menu.
The only way I could find to stop this happening was to create a temporary "Today" tag and apply it to all shots in todays event folder. By leaving that tag selected, I could then select and deselect the star tags at will.
Is this a usual procedure or is there a better way around the problem?Thanks again Colin and Brian
Since I am not in direct contact with any other PSE4 users, it could well be that I have developed some procedures that are "a trifle odd"
I guess the reason I tended to adopt Folder view is the the familiar feel of having a folder tree on the left hand side of the screen. It also seemed the most natural way of focussing attention on shots relating to a particular event as they are all together in one folder.
Yes Brian, I do have files in other folders, (not necessarily of today's date) with star ratings and they are what was distracting Organiser from the folder I was currently interested in.
My reason for avoiding Import Batch View is that every time I process a file (and save it under a new name), it creates its own little import batch so that after a while an event will finish up very fragmented.
Date order view looks like it might be worth a try, as long as I remember that I lose my date range settings if I temporarily switch to another view for any reason.
As far as tags go, is Brian suggesting a specific tag for every event? Over a year or two this would generate a rather large number of tags or do you envisage deleting such a tag when you have finished processing that event.
To avoid the problem of too many tags, I had started out with name tags for family members and fairly generic event tags such as "party", wedding" or "graduation" so that I could search for combinations such as
Tom AND Party
Mary AND Wedding
rather than have the number of tags multiply up.
Since Tom probably has a birthday party every year, a date range for the calendar year would be required to isolate a particular event.
After studying your advice so far, my current intention is that the first time I open up a folder for a new event, I will create an Instant tag. After a few days (or weeks or however long it takes till I am no longer spending much time on shots from that event) I can safely delete the tag - after all I can easily recreate it if needed. -

When I launch I photo it wants me to choose a library but it doesn't find one which is impossible, because i still have no storage. before i can clean up i want to back up them. how can i find my library?
You may very well have damaged your library - or even your system by not having adaquate storage available
And never select all of the pitcture and move them - that will destroy your library - the iPhotolibrary is a SQLite database and must always be kept intact as a single entity -
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

Someone used my email address to create an Apple ID. I logged in to appleid.apple.com and I changed the password because it is freaking me out. I want to report it to Apple but dont know how to go about it. I want the Apple ID deleted. How do I go about that? Is there also a way to ensure that the email address wont be used again by this person to create another Apple ID?
This is compounded actually by a Gmail issue. I have had this email address for ages, since the start of the beta. But lately in the last year or so, I am getting mail that seems to be intended for other people but it is using my email address. Do I have to back up the data of my macbook white unibody if I am changing the screen because of the crack problem at the the back of the screen?
They told me to bring it to the genius at the apple store. They will change it for free but I don't have any physical place to back up my computer, they said it will take a coupe of days. I am not really sure if I have to back it up.

when you opened the shared library with the newer version of iPhoto (iPhoto '11) you were given a warning that your library would be converted and could not be used by older versions - you clicked ok to go ahead - there is no updo available - either upgrade to iphoto '11 of the MBP or load your backup of the iPhoto '09 library on it - older versiopns of i{Photo can not read newer libraries

I have a ipod 5th gen and i changed my password because everyone knew it. I had forgotten it and now it is fully disabled. I can not get it online anymore and i have tried everything to get it restored. Please help as I am really worried

Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.
