Changing the artist name

I am probably missing something easy, but I would appreciate any help you can give. I have downloaded many songs from the internet that were in compilation albums and the artist name on I-tunes shows up as "various artists." I know the correct artist names, but I can't figure out how to change it, so that I can sort by artist name. Tt will let me change the title, but not the artist. help please!
Thanks, Bill

Read this article, it has some good tips on Artist vs. Album Artist.

I put "Various Artists" in the *Album Artist* field, and the single artist in the Artist field.

  • I just highlighted and changed the artist name of about a hundred songs in my library.  This was an accident and I want to change them back. I can't "undo" or search for artists' names online. Any way to fix this? They are still highlighted.

These were all songs I had ripped from old CDs, lot of which, I no longer have. I can't remember that artists' names for all these songs.  They are all "oldies" from the fifties and I just accidentally changed the artist for all them to Fats Domino. I'd had them all highlighted because I had done a batch change of their genre to Oldies. I couldn't tell that they were all still highlighted after that change because I could only see two of the songs at the time that I changed the artist name.  Is there any possible way to undo this?  All the tracks are still highlighted from the naming operation. I can't search for the artists' names online because I didn't purchase them from iTunes.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

I found one other way to do it.  I just deleted them all out of my iTunes library. Now I can re-import them from Window's My Music file with the original artists' names intact.
    Thanks for your help, Matt!

when editing info, how do i select multiple items to edit a group? For example, changing the artist name on multiple tracks at once?

Same way you select multipl items anywhere else.
Hold ctrl and click the items you want.
If they are in consecutive order, click the 1st then Shift click the last.

  • I just started up with my IPod, I download music to my library and I accidently changed the artists name in an entire category.  I can't figure out how to undo it. I read the edit help stuff but I can't select the item I need to edit

I just started using my IPod and I downloaded my library.  I accidently changed the artist names for an entire genre category and I can't undo it.  I read all the edit help stuff and I either can't select items to edit or I'm an idiot and I can't figure it out.  I keep trying and I get a pop up that asks me if I want to change multiple items.

  • Changed the artist name of all of my iTunes library by mistake

Found an album that listed the artist name as mixed. I selected the songs in that album to change the artist name and wound up setting the artist name for all of the songs in my library to that one artist. I was able to recover from a time machine backup, but the information on the cloud using iTunes match is not correct. I have since then signed out of my account until I hear back from Apple. Any clues? No undo.....

If neither of the above and you don't have the CD and can't find your tracks on the computer then they you're stuck.  A file recovery utility will cost $100, plus another $100 for an external drive to which to resue the files, and may not even work.  You can buy a lot of CDs for $200.

  • How do I change the artist name when producing the Podcast for release

I submit my podcast, and I automatically become the artist, although I am not. I am posting the podcast with my account for my business. Everything is working fine but the artist listing. I need it to be correct so that it will show up correctly in podcast searches.

You can't change anything in iTunes: all infomation is carried in the feed, in this case in the 'itunes:author' tag. there will certainly be somewhere to enter it but if you can't find it you will need to contacts Libsyn; or quite possible Rob Walch, who works for them and posts here, will see this question.

  • Why do I receive the exclamation point when I just change the album name? File goes missing?

I keep all of my itunes media on an attached network hard drive.  Had no problems for months but over the past 45 days I've noticed that material has started to go missing that I know I did not delete.  I have found no malware on my system.
I read a script to tell me all the files that had an exclamation point.  There were some TV shows (an entire season gone missing) and some CDs.
I just did a test and imported a CD.  I then clicked "get info" and changed the name of the album.  Immediately I received the exclamation point and when I tried to find the original file it is gone.  I have no idea where the file has gone to.  I've tried searching, looking around to find it, and I can't.
Why is itunes having this behavior?  How is the file being deleted?  Any other thoughts or ideas of what I should do to stop this?
I've also sent a support request to the hard drive mfg (lacie) but I'm not sure I'll get much help there.
    Thanks.

More info:  I just ran the same test two ways.  One, I had some files on my desktop, run a script to move these files to the "automatically add to itunes" folder, the files move just fine to my external hard drive and to itunes.  The file plays just fine and the "get info" tab shows it is playing the file from the external hard drive where the file was moved to (not copied).  But, as soon as I change the artist name or the album, the file goes missing and I get the exclamation point.
I ran the same test by putting the files on my desktop, but instead of moving the file to the "automatically add to itunes folder" I just double clicked the file to play it.  I let itunes add a copy and organize my folders.  This time, the file would have been copied (not physically moved) and I see itunes is playing the new copied version.  This time, when I try to change the artist name or album, I have no problems.
I've never encountered this before.  Any info?  Thanks.

  • How do I change the artist/owner name for my podcast?

How do I change the artist/owner name for my podcast?
For eg, a podcast has 'The Ricky Gervais Podcast' and underneath 'Ricky Gervais'. I can't see where to change the latter. I can't change that through our podcast host Libsyn.
    Is it done through iTunes?

  • How can I change the file name of an mp3 file to it's ID3 name?

I prefer to alter the ID3 names of my music files to include: ARTIST - Track number - Tune Name. I do this in iTunes, by individually selecting each file, and Apple+I, then change the INFO/NAME tag.
But the same file has a file name and an ID3 name then.
Is there any script or APP that will allow me to BATCH convert all music file names to the ID3 name?

Yes, how do you think they get there if I double click them in finder and list themselves and start playing in iTunes?
    > You are looking at the file in iTunes not the original file

I have talked about both if you will read the thread.
    > In iTunes, right click Show in Finder
Read the thread carefully, you are missing something.
    > Uncheck Keep iTunes media folder organized,
    > then click OK. Then go back and recheck it.
    Has no effect whatsoever.

  • Is it possible to change the genre name...

Can I change the name of the genre for an artist without changing the genre on every single song? Is it possible to change the genre name for all songs by an artist by just typing in the new genre for that artist just once?

    Ted,
    Yes and no.
You can select all the tracks you wish to change the Genre of and change them all at once. Then choose File>Get Info or type command-i.
You'll be warned that are about to edit information for multiple items.
Click OK. Then make you Genre change.
Just remember any field you change will be changed in all the selected items.

  • Can't delete the Artist Name

In one of my imported songs (from an LP) I decided that the Artist Name is wrong. I don't know the name, so I just deleted it from the Artist field in the Info window, and clicked Okay. But the name reappears the next time I open the information window. Same thing when I try to delete the Artist Name in list view. I highlight it and hit the delete key, but it comes back as soon as I click out of it. This is the only song on the entire album that does that. I can delete the Artist name on any other song and it stays deleted.

I just asked a similar question, but in reading your question figured out the answer to mine.  The problem comes from the source being the LP.  Are you running windows?  If so, does the album show up in your music folder?  If so, first delete the song from iTunes. Then click on the song, then "organize," then "properties," then "details", then change whatever you want, then reimport it into iTunes.

  • I used to be able to change track & artist names & other song info in "View" / "Info"; can no longer do

I used to be able to change track & artist names & other song info in "View" / "Info" (or Command I) but can no longer do. The info shows up "greyed". It seems to be on tracks from CDs I imported or downloaded from sources several years ago (pre Gracenotes).
Any suggestions on how to fix?
    Thanks!

I'm having a similar issue. I just downloaded new songs and I can't edit the information or artwork because they are all greyed out. I didn't have that problem until I upgraded to iTunes 11!

  • I bought an album and not all the songs came up listed under the artist name.  They came up as separate songs and not as part of an album.  How do I fix this?

I bought an album and not all the songs came up listed under the artist name.  They came up as separate songs and not as part of an album.  How do I fix this?

    Hello pjmelli921,
You have to locate the album in itunes. Highlight each track, hold the ctrl button and left click each one.
Do a right-click on the highlighted blue, select get info, say yes to editing multiple tracks.
Hit the options tab, change "part of a compliation" to yes, select ok on the bottom right.
Resync ipod. This should fix it on your ipod after the resync.
    Hope this helps.
