Changing the Dock monitor

is there a way to display the dock and the main os X window bar (the top menu with application options File Edit View ...etc.) on the second monitor?
I have a dual display, but odly enough the first monitor has the old round corner monitor port for older cinema display and the second monitor has the square type for the newer cinema display. So I have the old clear cinema with the lower resolution pluged into port one and a newer aluminum cinema with a higher resolution plugged into port 2.
I would really really like it if I could reverse the port configurations to use port 2 as the primary monitor that holds the dock and menu bar and the lower res monitor as the second monitor just to extend workspace.

You can go to System Preferences>Displays>Arrangement and drag the menu bar from one monitor icon to the other. This will cause the menu bar and the dock to appear on the monitor of your choice. You can also drag a monitor icon up and down for better alignment with the other monitor, which can be handy if one monitor is significantly larger or stands taller than the other.

  • How do I change the dock appearance?

I'm making this post because when i did a search for "dock appearance" it gave me stuff for OS 10.7, 10.8, iMac, Intel.... everything but OS 10.5. Apple:  it seems like a search should default to searching the discussions section you're in.
Anyway, HOW do i change the dock appearance to something that's not ugly? I looked online and fig'd out how to get rid of that ridiculous 3D dock, but now it's just black (with an outline), like a hole in the screen. Ugly and creepy. Yet, i can't seem to find an appearance option or anything that let's me make it, oh, i don't know, semi-transparent bluegrey like 10.4's? I mean, that was kind of icky too, but still far better than black. Thanks.

  • How can I change the dock to normal?

I need help by changing the dock to normal because I put it like in a new version and it turned like not clear and the little lights are now squared not round.

How did you do that, with a thrid party utility?

  • The system doesn´t let me change the dock and .jar files

    Dear professionals,
since a couple of days I come across with a weird problem:
I am logged in as admin but the system doesn`t perform several modifications:
    such as:
if I remove a broken link from the dock (grey questionmark) and replace it with a new link to the new app the next session everything is unchanged and the questionmark is back.
if I want firefox not to play quicktime and try to change the preferences it flips back immediately
if I want to open Cocktail to schek something it does not accept me as admin - whereas the systems calls me admin.
maybe the futile attempt to alter the minecraft.jar has the same reason.
At many files the file info shows a strange entry at the botten where the sharing/permission are listed: Name is "Laden..." meanig "Loading..." with the dots and as symbol a grey person with tiny questionmark; permission is "read only"
    History:
Till now I never used a password and logged in automatical as admin
    I upgraded to Lion
I installed a second account to have a workspace not as admin
I gave a password to the admin account
I got nuts with the second account as I couldn´t change the preferences of firefox and delete files and so on
I gave administration rights to the second account to customize the workspace
I realized the problems with the admin account - changes where ignored/forgotten by the system w/o warnings
I deleted the second account as it seemed to cause the trouble
I repaired the rights in the admin account
I repaired the HD with HD recovery
I try to check the system with cocktail but cocktail tells me the password is not sufficient - it opens the app but it refuses any modifications
    I switched to manual login
System tells me that the keychain.login does not accept the password
I set the password for keychain also
keychain first aid tells me the password does not work ?
I removed the password from admin account
I removed the password from keychain first aid is happy
Repair rights does not find any trouble
Cocktail does not accept me anyway anymore, without password (as i logged in) or the former passwords- it blocks at all.
And all the other stuff listed at the beginning drives me crazy
File Info window tells me i have adapted rights- whatever it means, as i am listed with full read/write rights
    now I am stunned.
I would like to use my Installation disk to repair anything - but as it is not the lion system I am afraid to cause more trouble.
    Does anyone have a clue?
And sorry for the strange text- english is not my native language
And, btw, is netinfo manager removed by lion? it does not appear on my volume.
    Thanks for Your help
    Bernhard

Repairing the permissions of a home folder in Lion is a complicated procedure. I don’t know of a simpler one that always works.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Drag or copy – do not type – the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
    chmod -R -N ~
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. When a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) appears below what you entered, it’s done. You may see a few error messages about an “invalid argument” while the command is running. You can ignore those. If you get an error message with the words “Permission denied,” enter this:
    sudo !!
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.
Next, boot from your recovery partition by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the recovery desktop appears, select Utilities ▹ Terminal from the menu bar.
In the Terminal window, enter “resetpassword” (without the quotes) and press return. A Reset Password window opens.
Select your boot volume if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select  ▹ Restart from the menu bar.

  • Changing the dock icons

I downloaded a new icon set awhile ago- I had no problem changing the icons for the applications and folders in Finder. However, the new icon does not show up on the dock- for example, the changed dashboard icon appears in the Applications folder, but the old one shows up on the dock. How do I get the new icons to show up on the dock?

I am not sure what it might be. I do remember reading some where certain icons such as system icons have to be changed at different level. I just saw the new candybar3 , http://www.panic.com/candybar/ , update for Leopard. One other thing you might consider is updating to 10.5.1

  • Changing the dock

I was screwing around trying to sync my macbook pro to Apple tv and watch a cd (grrr-checkerboard pattern, but that's another story), and now when I open a web page it is small because it won't cover the dock at the bottom of the screen. I don't think this was the case before. Any suggestions? Thanks.

You need to write a terse summary of the problem you are trying to solve.
If it is Browser window size, just stretch the window by dragging the bottom corner or edge to the size you prefer. Then drag the window to the position you prefer. The next browser window should open at that same size.

  • Is there any way to have a clear or transparent dock. Or to change the dock at all I would love to see that!

It is exasperating that the iPhone dock cannot be adjusted in any way. I would love to see a transparency slider or a few style choices. C'mon apple. This makes sense!

  • I can't change the Icons in my dock

    Hello,
I bought the update version of SL and love it and no real complaints. I just have a issue with one aspect, the dock icons. Before i upgraded to SL, I used to have different icon pictures for different programs. So when I upgraded to SL it changed the icons to the standard/original icon pictures for the programs. Now i go into INFO in applications when i click on iTunes, and try to copy and paste a picture icon again to change the dock icon picture. But no such luck.
    Any Ideas?

one option is to use a 3rd party app like Candybar which will let you change those icons.
for another option see this post

  • Multi-cam vs. the Reference monitor

I use multi-cam to cut two views together.
Each view is in its own sequence, and those two sequences are the two tracks in the "multicam source"
While viewing the "multicam destination" sequence,  I often use the Application-wide keyboard shortcut to "Toggle Multi-camera View".
I like to keep the Reference Monitor up with some scopes on it while editing, to keep an eye on the relative color between the two cameras.
Sometimes, the Reference Monitor pops back to "Composite" view, instead of my scopes.  It happens SOMETIMES when I use the hotkey to
    toggle Multi-camera view.
Whether it changes the Reference Monitor view depends on which panel has focus when I hit the hot key!
    1) If the Program monitor has focus, and I hit the hot key to toggle Multi-Camera View, no problem, the Ref monitor stays on scopes as I want.
    2) If the Timeline panel has focus, then the silly Reference Monitor pops back to Composite View.
FYI, I checked, and there is no specific Timeline panel hotkey using the same keystroke (I am using shift-6)
Any idea if there is something to prevent the Ref Monitor from changing its settings from scopes to Composite like this?
I doubt this is an intended behavior, probably just an odd edge case.
I do see that the Program Monitor panel has an available keyboard shortcut called "Multi-Camera", but since I don't have the problem when focus is in the Program Monitor, I don't think this is relevant.  (I have it assigned to no keyboard shortcut right now).
As a side note, It would be really nice if the program monitor could remember for each sequence whether it should be showing "Multi-Camera View" or not.
I often have to switch between looking at the multi-cam destination, and looking at other sequences... and it makes no sense that those other sequences should be viewed in Multi-cam mode, just because some other sequence was being viewed in multi-cam mode.   No?

    Right,
So here was the problem, in case any of you people out there are going nuts with what appears to be a broken project.
In the timeline above the multicam layer, I was dropping in graphics. I was cutting and pasting them in.
In order to do so I have to highlight the layer that I want to drop the graphics onto.
    As shown below.
As soon as a layer gets a highlight other than the Multicam layer, the Program Monitor will no longer show multicam.
Remove the highlighted layer as seen below.
    Hope this helps someone.
    Cheers..

  • Managed user account, the dock, and the full finder?

I am creating a simple lab for school (26 computers wired together with CAT 6 switchers and no server...just me as the admin account) and will be creating managed accounts for each period. When I have been testing this, logging in as a student, I cannot figure out how to switch to the full finder so I can change the dock appearance for the account or if I want to open an application it simply denies me access. I thought it would give me the option of authenticating it with my admin password but no such luck yet...
Also, once I set up my user accounts, I have found several ways to copy them to other computers but will the dock preferences I set-up transfer as well? Or do I have to log-in on EVERY computer and do that? I'm asking because eventhough I limit access to several applications they still appear in the dock. Any suggestions about setting up the screen saver/energy mode for every computer in an easy fashion as well? Thanks!
    varies   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I certainly agree you have to wait to clone intel vs ppc!
But the settings inside the user should certainly be portable - they are just XML files and the options need to be the same even if the code has to be different when compiled as a universal binary versus PPC only code.
The time out period and on/off status as well as whether you need a password to unlock/unsleep is a system wide setting. The last admin user to make a change there wins (undoes any other settings)
The other settings can be different for each user. (Dock icons/arrangement).
Again, simply make one mac perfect and then make a disk image of the /Users/shortname folder on the "correct" mac and copy the contents of that folder to another machine. I think you will find that as long as you correctly preserver the owner permissions/bits the new mac will look exactly like the old one.

  • Ghost file in the Dock, how to delete?

    Hi!
I recently can see a file in the Download folder in the Dock. I can't see it in the Download folder in Finder. If I try to"catch" it I get a message "The Application can't be found". I find it irritating and would like to delete the file. It is named 4_Kkt409.part, What is a .part file anyway?? Does anyone know?

After some searching on the Internet
I found that the .part file is a partial file from an unsuccessfull download in Firefox. I had a such a week ago. The application Onyx has a cleaning feature for deleting the icon cache from the Dock. It worked. I had to restart and also change the dock settings as I like to have them

  • Apple messed up the dock when its on the side of the screen...

I want to know why, oh why, the Leopard dock isn't as cool when it is on the side of the screen instead of the bottom?! I have always used my dock on the side of the screen cause it takes up so much less space. But you cannot launch stacks in fan view, only grid view and the dock isn't as nice and shiny!! The whole reason I bought Leopard was because of the fan view! Why did they do this? If I am missing something and that shouldn't be the case then please let me know. Thanks.

the new side dock looks awful, but it's an improvement over the beta versions which had the mirrored shelf on the side. if you'd like to modify the way it looks slightly, you can change the dock border graphics (in this case, the white line that runs along the outside of the dock while it is on the side) by going to System -> Library -> CoreServices -> Right-click on Dock and choose "Show Package Contents". Then, look for either "left1.png" to "left5.png" (or right1.png to right5.png) and modify the graphics as you see fit. Basically, the dock border is an 8-pixel-wide repeated graphic that runs along the outside edge. I changed mine to eliminate the white line and rounded corners and just fade off to the desktop, but it's still ugly...hopefully someone will come up with a better way of doing it soon...

thats a screenshot of my modified dock. not the best looking thing, but better than the half-assed version it shipped with.

  • The Dock goes clear / see through...

I have a problem with my dock. Its goes clear. All the application icons stay in the correct place but the 'ledge' goes transparent. It does it almost daily. Restarting the computer works but only temporarily. Any ideas on how to sort this out??

I'm not sure if this is a "solution"... maybe a work-around.
There is a great free utility called TinkerTool.
    http://www.bresink.com/osx/TinkerTool.html
It provides a graphical interface for some of those Terminal commands that enable "hidden" settings. One of them is to use the Dock's "clear" look when it's along the side of the screen, but use this Dock look when the Dock is at the bottom. It also lets you relaunch the Dock easily (clicking a button) without going to Terminal or logging out/in.
So I'm thinking, if the Dock misbehaves, launch TinkerTool. Change the Dock's look. That will probably rewrite the Dock preference file without manually deleting the file. Then relaunch the Dock without wasting time logging out and logging back in (or typing a Terminal command). Then change it back to the 3D glass look.
Personally, I like the clear Dock better, and have it set that way all the time.

  • My MacBook Air shows only the desktop, the "dock" has disappeared. This happened before, and a technician said it had to do with the settings. Does anyone out there know how to retrieve the "dock" so it reappears?  thanks,  roger

My MacBook Air display shows only the desktop background, the dock has disappeared. Does anyone know how to restore the dock to the desktop?  thanks

The dock can be configured to automatically show and hide when moving the mouse cursor over the current location.  You can try to move the mouse over the dock area to see if it appears.  Hopefully it will, and if you don't want that setting you can then change it to show permanently in the System Preferences > Dock settings.
If that doesn't work you can change the dock location in the preference settings to align on a different side of the window to see if it appears.  That's all I can suggest at the moment.
Let us know how you make out.
