Changing the logic board

will I lose my apps in my macbook pro if I change the logic board? For example, I have Logic Pro 8 on my macbook pro. My mac didn't turn on anymore, I went to the Apple store and they told me that I need to change the logic board. If I get the logic board fix, or replaced, will I lose my apps (Logic Pro 8) or will the app still be on there? Please respond because I don't want to lose my projects and the software.
Thanks

Not off topic ... this is *YOUR* post ...
To start, you can sell your old one for the parts that still work (SuperDrive, display, ...).  Gives you some money back on a new one.
And PLEASE do not read my following statements as "just pay to fix it" ... I am just stating facts and I for one would probably buy new and sell old for parts
Second ... *most* new units come with Lion, and due to the firmware (PCs have BIOS on EPROMs, Machas "EFI Firmware), getting anthing less than Lion to run is tricky (just look up the number of existing posts on this subject).  Some have successfully pulled it off, but it all sounds complicated and I like haing an SL-initial unit.
But do not despair ... some people have hoarded stocks of MBP that can easily run SL because they actually came initally with SL so gray install disks come free.  If you start a post asking who knows these vendors, you should get an answer.
Also ... with apologies if you did not know this (as if you had no read anythingthing else I wrote) ...
Lion does not support PPC software anymore because Rosetta is not supported.  Could be higher software replacement costs if you do not intensely look for one of the few SL-initial MBP.
If you want to and want to avoid Lion (I have no valid opinion on why you should ... just saying if you want to) then start a thread on "Who knows the venors of existing pre-Lion MBP?".
I only mention the Lion issue because even if you put your old HD into an external enclosure, Lion-ready systems may not boot off that old system with applications you already have installed, and you wold be reloading all apps anyway.
I will stop so you can catch up, and ask more.
Or just jump straight to my recommended post and ask your question about saving old HD and SL-ready MBPs.

  • TS4088 I have changed the logic board in Apple genius bar

I have changed the logic board in Apple genius bar after updated to 10.6.8. Updated to 10.7.2 but now way BSOD never solved except after changing the logic board.
Can I update to 10.8.3 or as I read in the communities, the BSOD will return again? If it happens, I guess Apple will not change it to me again.

I am also on my forth hard drive on the same model.
When I unpacked the computer, the hard drive did not include OS X either. Actually, it was completely blank. Did not even have a partition table! I have also had random problems with the machine not charging.
I have replaced the drive myself with an SSD after figuring the Apple Certified technicians were incompetent. Now even the SSD is starting to fail
I have bought an HP laptop and setup Ubuntu on it. Hope it turns out better than my previous four various Mac models. All have had various repeating hardware issues that Apple Certified technicians have been unable or unwilling to correct.

  • My 2011 MacBook Pro does not start and stop after the apple appear, they said that the problem is a video problem and need to change the logic board. Cost almost same to buy a new one. Somebody have the same problem?

I have a MacBook Pro early 2011. Does not start. After the apple show, a blank screen appear. The service said that the problem is with the video plaquue in the logic board. Need to change. Cost lmmost the same than a new MacBook Pro. Somebody has the same problem? What we can do?

I hate to break this to you, but life isn't fair. If your job is that critically in need of a computer, then you should have a spare to use for just this kind of situation or have your employer provide you with a computer to use.
Computers break down, just like cars. If your car breaks down do you curse the car maker or get it fixed? Surely, you paid more for your car than the computer.
This is reality. Best get used to it because it won't get any better.

  • How many times did you change the logic board?

    Hello everybody,
I"m the formerly proud owner of an iBook G3. Solowly I"m getting tired of the logic board problem. I have AppleCare, but by now I"m sending my iBook twice a year for repair!
By now I had my iBook sent to Care 5 times due to the logic board problem.
Now I"d like to know if this is average, low or high ranking on the G3 exchange scale,
    Who can beat 5?
    Michael

    Michael,
Mine has been back three times.
If your iBook's logic board goes out again, I recommend that you call Apple and, instead of talking to Customer Support, immediately ask for Customer Relations. Be prepared with dates and details of your iBook's repair history, tell them you need a computer that is dependable, and your iBook just isn't. Then ask for a replacement. It has been known to happen.
    Good luck.

  • Can the fan be replaced without the need of changing the logic board and everything else they said(total of $750)??

my mac air have some physical damage , the fan seems not no be working, when they runed the test it is what it showed , now they are telling me that they need to relace evrything, even if is not damaged. The incident hapened  week ago , i had not experienced any overheating problems , or any issues.
I didnt knew the damage on the fan till they runed the test.
Is it possible that by changing just the fan would be just enough for not cause any future damage on the rest of the comuter???
even that before today , i didnt noticed any truoble with it.....
i sudgested that to the genius bar guy , n he said that "there they just dont provide that service"......

So the first was ruined from a spill.
    and the second one.......?
You list a MacBook Air (13-inch Mid 2013)
it would still be under warranty IF it was warranty work,  is it?  Or did you ruin it with another spill?
Seems you need portable insurance for spills / accients etc.
for drops, accidents, spills, loss, or theft, purchase a TYPE of insurance called "inland marine insurance"
roughly $30 per year for a device(s) with 0 deductible, used same for over 20 years, same insurance the pros use on their portable devices.
very cheap, very useful insurance, most people dont know about same.

  • Is replacing the logic board going to make my early 2011 Macbook Pro as good as before

I have an early 2011 15" Macbook Pro that just crashed completely days ago. I sent it to the genius bar and was told that I need to replace the logic board and it costs amost $1000. I'm thinking whether changing the logic board actually means that my macbook would be as good as before. I mean I'm not having high expectations but I hope that it would at least lasts for another few years. I've only had this Mac for three years and I'm not sure if its a consistent problem for the early 2011 models regarding the logic board but I sure had mine replaced for at least three times in the first year when I got it. I'm not sure if I should just use that same money to get a brand new laptop, problem is, I'm quite unwilling to switching to a windows system if you understand how it feels.

The first thing I'd look at is your hard drive ... is your free space 10% to 15% or more of the total capacity? If not, that would account for what you're seeing.

  • When Replacing the Logic Board....

I recently sent my iBook in for a mulittude of repairs, including a problem with the CD R-W/DVD drive not working right. To fix this they replaced the Logic Board, but when doing so the Hard Drive was wiped. I've had my logic board replaced 100s of times on an iBook G3 without that happening. Anyone know why that would have changed this time?

  • I have a Mac book pro, 15" that I bought 4 years a go, the logic board has died, what recoarse do I have with Apple regarding a product that should last years

I have a 15" Macbook that I bought in late 2007, which is just 4 years old Since then the battery wont hold a descent charge, the screen had to be changed and now the logic board has died. plus there is an issue with the video card for that same model. I would expect a product that carries the Apple brand to last longer. They are not cheap to buy and its some thing that I cant afford to replace every few years. Does any body think that Apple has an obligation to do the right thing or am I expecting too much.

Four years is a pretty typical lifespan for a battery (and for a computer in general).

    You are expecting too much.

  • After replacing the logic board in my Macbook Pro it will no longer connect to the App Store.

I recently had to replace the logic board in my early 11 Macbook Pro (first gen i7).  With the release of Yosemite just a few weeks away I am trying to update from Snow Leopard 10.6.8 to Mavericks.  I'm afraid if I don't after this update it will become much harder.  I always lived by the rule if it ain't broke and for a long time Snow Leopard worked very well for what I needed to do.  All my software is current and there are no updates pending.  All my Keychain Access System Roots Certificates are good and I have no problems getting into iTunes.  I thought it might be something on Apples end but after 36 hours it's still the same problem.  When I try to open the App Store I get this:
Any ideas.  I don't use the App Store that much but until this I had never had this problem before.
    Thanks for the help.

    From the menu bar, select
               ▹ About This Mac
Below the "OS X" legend in the window that opens, the OS version appears. Click the version line twice to display the serial number. If the number is missing or invalid according to this web form, take the machine to an Apple Store or other authorized service center to have the problem corrected.

  • I got my Macbook Pro 17inch (early 2011) back from Apple (they had to replace the logic board) and now my microphone is not working

I got my Macbook Pro 17inch (early 2011) back from Apple (they had to replace the logic board) 3 days ago, I had a terrible experience as the genious who gave me my solid state disk for safekeeping lost my disk's brackets thus I had to wait 2 more hours until they find one after 10 days of waiting for the repair. I noticed some weird sounds, like somehting is moving with the mac 1-2 times, even if I have no mechanical parts other than the fans, but my real issue at the moment is that my microphone is not working. I can see the mic in the System Info however and in Audio Midi Setup. In the Audio Midi Setup I see that the master chanel is turned off and I can't turn in on. Ch 1 and 2 are on full. I also noticed the first seconds after the comp. boots the blue bar goes to the middle in the System Preferences -> Sound -> Input. Any ideas what to do or try? I do not want to go back to the apple store as it is 50 minutes away from here and I need my laptop as a computer science student. Everything else is working perfectly.

You need to call both the store that did the repair and Apple directly, warranty service or Apple care, and report this problem with both of them and get a ticket number of some kind (some kind of verification number) that the unit just came back from major service with this problem and that you want it fixed when you can lose the use of it, which is not right now.
Without doing something like that they could easily say it is damage not covered under the normal warranty.
God knows what the repair center did and did not do to it while it was there.
And depending on when you actually bought it the warranty could run out in the mean time.

  • I've got a mac pro problem with the starting up, but also a red light on the logic board solidly on. Its not among the diagnostic led. It's located near the BT adapter and the front fans. Also the fans run loud also. any solutions?

    Hi
I've got a mac pro late 2006, and i am having problem with it for quite a while now. the problem i am facing is the start up process, and the red light on the logic board. Earlier I've got the two led on the diagnostic leds 5 and 6 turned on without the diagnostic button being pressed, and i think those are related to the processors overtemp. I've managed to solve that by, removing the processors and re applying the thermal compound on the heatsink. what i have left now with is the red light on  the logic board at the time i plugged in the power. At the same time when this light come on, the power indicator at the front panel come on as well. i am not sure what is this light relates to. We've replace the power supply too, and gone through the SMC reset but seems no help.
Any idea on the problem? I am desperate about it, and i will be greatful if anyone can help..
thanks and hope for your best solutions
    Kari

I can't help directly with your problem but you might check here http://tim.id.au/laptops/apple/macpro/ for a service manual which could answer your question.

  • The logic board of my macbkpro 10.6.8 (OS ML) has died. I want t migrate info to another McbkPro (OS Snow Leopard) but is asking me to update to same OS. Can I update the latter to Mavericks and migrate the info from Mountain lion? thanks

Hi i took my macbook pro to an apple store because it would not start correctly. The veredict was that the logic board was dead. As this is a very expensive item to replace, I have decided I will buy a new one but I am currently overseas, and will wait a couple of months when I get back home. This is a macbookpro 15 inch early 2011, running on Mountain Lion OS. I have another macbook pro 13inch running on snow leopard. At the store we tried to migrate the info using an ethernet cable (using the "T" command on startup) but the system asked for an update of the OS. The guy at the store told me I had to update the OS so that the two macs would be on the same OS - mountain Lion. As the newest (and free) OS is Mavericks, I wonder wheather I coud update the 13 inch mac to mavericks and perform the migration. The guy at the store was explicit to say that if the OS were different it would not work. But reading on the apple website it seems that mavericks support this kind of migration altough is not explicit about it. Can you please help?
    thanks

    Hi BobRz,
As this is a new issue for me, I believe I had the incorrect approach, maybe you can help me. What I want to do is recover a few files in my desktop, and some information i had on the iCal application and the Mail application as well.As I do not want to do a full migration into this computer (which is not mine) I believe that starting the damaged MBP in Target mode should allow me to search and cop the files I need. But:
    1. Can I open the Ical and mail apps to look for the info I need while reading it as an external HD  ?
    2. Do the target machine (my friends) still need to be updated to ML o Mavs so that it recognizes my MBP as an external drive if starting it in Target mode ? (no migration assistant)
    Thanks.

Ok, fair enough.  But since Job's death - Apple's control on leaks has been terrible.  I got the new iPhone, and I like it - but it hasn't made nearly as big as an impression as previous ones.  Because of the vast ammount of leaks.  With the iPad mini leaks, it's 99% sure to come out next week.
Apple uses many manufacturers and it's massive also websites prefer to report on Apple whether true or false because it brings more hits.
Amd by "others" I meant other people on iPads - not other devices/manufacturers.  It's possible to do so, I just want to know how.  I honestly don't think we'll ever be in a Post-PC era until all tablets allow us to use USB in the way computers do.
No, USB is not the future, you missed the memo about cloud and wireless computing?

  • After having the logic board replaced, Time Machine will no longer backup my computer to the same backup files as before.

After having the logic board replaced due to bad NVidia chip, my Time Machine will no longer backup my computer to the current backup. Is there a way to reset something to get Time Machine to continue to use the same backup files as before for this laptop?

As far as TM is concerned you have a new computer, so it will make a new backup. If you don't have the space for both backups then erase your backup drive before backing up the computer.

  • Mac shuts down after boot. Is it the logic board?

mac shuts down after boot. Doesn't go beyond gray screen with apple.  Is it the logic board?
I do not have the start up disks to safe boot or check the hardware.
Any ideas what the problem is or is it junk?  It is 8 years old.

Shutdown your machine.  Hold down the shift key.  Poweron.  Wait awhile Wait awhile while you harddrive
    is being checked.

I'd let the machine sit for awhile in open firmware & see if it stays alive.  Do a few prints.
Sometimes if volumes don't appear in Startup Manager (what you get when you hold down the Option key at startup), you need to reset the Mac's PRAM, NVRAM, and Open Firmware. Shut down the Mac, then power it up, and before the screen lights up, quickly hold down the Command, Option, P, and R keys, until the Mac has chimed twice more after the powerup chime. Then, before the screen lights up, hold down Command-Option-O-F until the Open Firmware screen appears. Then enter these lines, pressing Return after each one:
    reset-nvram
    set-defaults
    reset-all
"The reset-all command should restart your Mac. If so, you have successfully reset the Open Firmware settings."
