Changing the output sound device when a headset is plugged in?

I wanted to replace my clunky old Logitech USB headset with a bluetooth one and then noticed - hey! - there is a headset jack. So I tested a Skype call with an extra iPhone headset I had lying around and it worked great.
The only problem is there doesn't seem to be a way to switch to the internal speaker of the MBP when not using the headset, which is most of the time, unless I physically unplug the headset. The Option+click volume feature also won't recognize the internal speakers unless I unplug the headset.
It's a minor nuisance, but there is the extra wear and tear. And it's sort of a nuisance to have to quickly plug the headset in if a call comes in. So I was wondering if there was some recommended tool for doing this kind of quick switching when the headset is plugged in all the time.
Thanks,
Doug

The only thing I don't like about the iPhone headset solution is that the earplugs are uncomfortable, and keep falling out. I basically don't like things stuck in my ear. So I am thinking of buying an actual over-the-ears headset to plug in to the headset port.
A couple of questions:
- Is there any reason at all to go USB headset instead? It seems like a waste of a USB port since there is a headset jack.
- Is there any way of switching the output sound back to the speakers while the headset is plugged in? Or do I have to physically unplug it each time it is not in use for a Skype call (which is the only time I would use it)?
Thanks,
doug

  • Is there any way to change the output audio device for FireFox?

    Hey,
I'm trying to output the audio from my FireFox browser to my external bluetooth speakers, and I can't figure out how to for the life of me. I'm using google play music (just made the switch from Chrome), and for some reason I can only get FireFox audio out of the system speakers. There seems to be no settings to change this in Windows or FireFox, can someone suggest a plug-in or workaround? Really don't want to go back to Chrome over some stupid issue like this.
    Thanks,
    Joe

I am pretty sure that the plug ins are responsible for this, My Compuer > Control Panel > Sounds and Multimedia Properties > Audio > Sound Playback, though the menu may be different in 8.1,
    Please see these as well:

  • Change Output Sound Device

Is there anyway to change the output sound device in iTunes without going through System Preference?
I have an iMac with built-in Speakers, and a 5.1 Griffin Firewave over Firewire. I want my music to come through my external speakers but I don't need my system sounds to come through those, right now I can only change it through System preference and haven't found a way to divide them up.
This is do-able in the Apple DVD Player... any thoughts for this function in iTunes? Is there some place I can put this in a suggestion box if it's not already a function?

It is a great pity you are using Leopard. Up until Tiger there was a great little free app called Detour that let you assign separate audio channels for different apps. You could Google "Detour" and see if there is another utility that will work for Leopard?
There is also an app Soundflowerbed that lets you route the output from one program and port it into another. Unfortunately, those programs must have 'audio channel recognition' (not a technical term - I just mean that they must be able to take an input and deliver an output, e.g. like GarageBand). iTunes doesn't.

  • HT5287 How do I change the name, Under Devices, of Remote Disk or Untitled to a name that reflects what I want.  In this case" Flash" for USB thumb drives.  Also will this create confusion when I connect my Superdrive?  Meaning, will it still be called FL

I want to change the name under DEVICES, left column Remote Disk, Untitled  to FLASH USB, and still have it read my Superdrive when I connect it?

Each Volume (partition) on a device has a name.
When it is mounted it will appear with that name as an icon on the desktop, and under devices in the sidebar.
Typically a USB flash drive would only have one volume.
They may initially come with names like Untitled or No_Name etc.
When mounted you can rename any USB drive (Or individual Volume if there is more than one partition) by using the mouse to select the name on the Desktop and hold the selection in you can edit the name. That name will stay with that particular drive and will show every time it is mounted.
CDs and DVDs may well have a name which will show when they are mounted. When you make a CD or DVD you can provide a name when making it.
It is good practice to name a new thumb drive or USB disk when you get it to avoid the confusion you seem to be having. Simialrly to name any DVDs or CDs you create

  • Output sound distortion when USB Mic Connected

    Hi everyone,
Really appreciate anyone’s help on this sound distortion problem.
I have been using the new 2014 iMac 27' for last 8 Months, bought Brand New, and recently updated to Yosemite. Everything worked fine including recording, until this update.
I'm using Blue Yeti USB Mic for recording, and few days after the update I was trying to record in GarageBand and the output sound (via headphone connected to USB MIc) started to distort and then suddenly dropped the bitrate/ sound and I could only hear some clicks. I reinstalled the GargeBand, still its the same distortion happens. The sound gets back to normal, only for few seconds, after I unplug the USB cable from the Mic device. And I tried changing the bit rate and again sounds starts to drop after few sec. This happens only when I connect the Blue Yeti USB Mic and sound output from the Mic itself. Same thing happens with iTunes as well. Output sound from Internal mic and speakers are working fine as normal.
I tried connecting the USB Mic to my Windows laptop and its working fine with the Cubase 5 without any problem. So the problem is with the output sound, when external Mic connected.
I don’t know the solution for this. Have checked on every single blog/ thread, sill couldn’t find the answer I’m looking for, to fix this.
It would be great if you have any kind of a solution for the same.

Nope. The larger buffer didn't work. What did work was running a cord out of the 1/4-inch jack from the direct box to a 1/4-to-1/8-inch adapter and then into the mic/line-in jack on my computer. I set GarageBand to use the built-in line-in and had no static problems. It's a stopgap until this gets fixed.

  • Find the right sound device in /dev

    Hello guys,
I want to set the right sound device to record also sound from my internal microphone with xvidcap. For that I have to set the proper sound device /dev/XXX in the settings of xvidcap.
But how can I find out which of them is my internal microphone?
    Regards

Looking at this old thread from 2011 I know others will look for an answer (I was doing just that a week ago). Yes xvidcap is old but it does work and does record sound as well. Here is what helped me to get it to record sound:
    For the common no-sound problem:
    1. Install pavucontrol and alacarte if not already
    2. Open the program with padsp xvidcap
    3. Click on the recording button (red circle)
    4. Run pavucontrol, go to the Recording tab and there choose Monitor of Analog Stereo Internal Audio
    Done!!
To record with sound, the program has always to be run with padsp xvidcap (for example from ALT+F2). To run it always like that from the menu: run alacarte, go to Sound and video, then to XVidCap Screen Capture, Properties and where it says Command put padsp xvidcap.
The stated is to record the system sound, that is, the one coming out of the speakers, that can be of a song or movie of our hard drive or pendrive played by Totem, of a Flash music video of a website played by Firefox, ...
Nevertheless, sometimes it can be necessary to record the microphone sound, for example if we want to make a video tutorial to explain how a program works. In this case we put xvidcap in recording state, run pavucontrol and in the Recording tab we put Analog Stereo Internal Audio (without "Monitor of" ahead).
If we only want to record sound (without video) we can run from ALT+F2 gnome-sound-recorder. The first time probably it will be configured to record from the microphone. To record the system sound we run with ALT+F2 gnome-volume-control, go to the Hardware tab and in Profile we put Analog Stereo Output (it's also possible to do this running pavucontrol and using the Configuration tab).
But when we finish we have to put again Analog Stereo Duplex in the Profile of Hardware of gnome-volume-control (or of Configuration of pavucontrol), so we can still choose the origin of the sound when recording with xvidcap.
Another option, not to have to change once and again between Analog Stereo Duplex and Analog Stereo Output neither limit the sound source for xvidcap, is to leave Analog Stereo Duplex and use also gnome-sound-recorder with padsp ahead, that is, run padsp gnome-sound-recorder. Like the stated for padsp xvidcap, to change where we want to record the sound from, we put the program recording, open pavucontrol and in the Recording tab we put the desired option. We also can change the menu entry if we want with alacarte, going to Sound & video, then to Sound Recorder and then to Properties.
NB: sometimes, to change from Analog Stereo Duplex to Analog Stereo Output it may be necessary to change first to Off, close, open again and then change finally to Analog Stereo Output. The same for the opposite change. If not, the computer may "not notice" that we have applied the change.

  • How to use X-Fi Effects without selecting SB as the default sound device?

How to use X-Fi Effects without selecting SB as the default sound device?Hello everyone,
    That's my situation.
I have Sound Blaster X-Fi Go sound card and I am using SRS HD Audio Lab. SRS HD Audio Lab was selected as the default audio device and X-Fi effects (X-Fi CMSS-3d, Equalizer etc.) was working without any problem in Windows Xp. I have Windows 7 now and when i select SRS HD Audio Lab as the default device, Creative effects are not working, i must select "SB X-Fi Go!" to get them working but i can't use SRS HD Audio Lab in that case. SRS is also using SB X-Fi Go sound card as the output and volume adjustment on console launcher is working but something is disabling the effects. Any solutions to enable effects ?
    Thanks.

If the kernel modules for your sound card and webcam both support the index parameter (use modinfo to find out) then adding
    options <name_of_preferred_card's_kernel_module> index=0
    options <name_of_second_card's_kernel_module> index=1
to /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf (or another modprobe conf file of your choice) should solve the problem.

  • IS THERE A WAY TO CHANGE THE NOTIFICATION SOUNDS FOR REMINDERS?

IS THERE A WAY TO CHANGE THE NOTIFICATION SOUNDS FOR REMINDERS?

Yes you can, in the sense that this is an "Alert" sound you've set for the whole Mac software, and of course this is set in System Preferences > Sounds > Sound Effects. This will change the "alert sound" for the whole Mac.
So, No, you can't change only this particular Alert sound. If you could, it would be done in System Preferences > Notifications, and your only option there is whether you want the sound or not (Chkbox on "Play sound when receiving Notifications")

    Hello Shaholeh87,
Do you see a Globe icon on left hand side of your Spacebar if yes try pressing that and see if you get an option of changing the keboard language (this will work if you have Multiple language set on your iPhone from Settings>General>Keyboard>International Keyboards and added a keyboard in Arabic Language before )
Or you can get your iPhone in Recovery Mode and Restore it to Factory settings but you will lose all your current Data that you have on your iPhone.
To Restore your iPhone by taking it in Recovery Mode you can follow the below steps :
Follow the process mentioned below step by step to get your iPod Touch/iPhone/iPad working.
Make sure you have Latest Version of iTunes (11.1.3) Downloaded and Installed on your Computer, if not then you can download the latest version of iTunes from the Link below.
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Now once you have the Updated version of iTunes installed on your computer follow the below steps to get your iPod Touch/iPhone/iPad in Recovery Mode and Then restore it to factory settings
Open iTunes Application on your computer and then start the process step by step
1>Disconnect your device from the computer (if connected). The process won’t work if you start with the iPod Touch/iPhone/iPad connected to the computer. Leave the cable connected to the iPod Touch/iPhone/iPad, as you will be reconnecting the iPod Touch/iPhone/iPad to the Computer later in the process.
2>Power down your device. Turn off your device by holding down the Power button ( On Top right corner of iPod). When the power slider appears, slide it to the right. Wait for your device to comepletely shut down before continuing.
3>Press and hold the Home button (Home Button is located at bottom of your iPod Touch/iPhone/iPad screen/display). With the Home button held connect the device to your computer with the USB cable. When reconnected, your device should turn on.
(If the low battery screen appears, charge your device for a few minutes and try the process again.)
4>Continue holding the Home button. After a few moments, you will see the "Connect to iTunes" screen on your device. This screen is a picture of an arrow pointing from a USB cable to the iTunes logo. When you see the screen you can release the Home button.
5>iTunes will display a message stating that a device in recovery mode has been connected. From there you can proceed to restore your iOS device. Once you see this message click on OK and then click on Restore
Once you click on Restore iTunes will download the Latest available version of iPod Touch/iPhone/iPad software (ipsw file) in your computer and after the download is completed the same will be restored in your iPod Touch/iPhone/iPad. You will see the Download process and Restore process on top of your iTunes screen. Once the restore is completed your iPod Touch/iPhone/iPad will automatically restart and you will see a message that iPod Touch/iPhone/iPad has been Restored and will connect after restart.
Now you will have to follow some steps on your iPod Touch/iPhone/iPad to Customize your Device for First Use.
Hope this process will help you

  • How can i change the trash sound ?

    Hi everyone!
I'd like to change the trash sound, you know that boring sound when you empty the trash. I'd like to change it but I didnt find anything about it.
    Thanks
    Pi-M

I've just figured out! So that's the way:
1rst: choose your sound (I've chosen a Laser Sabre sound, works great! ), then convert it on ".aiff" with Audacity (for instance), and name it "empty trash.aif" (don't worry about ".aif"/".aiff", there's no difference)
    2nd:
    Hard drive>system>library>components>
Then right click on CoreAudio.component and click 'show package contents'
    Then go into Contents>Resources>SystemSounds>finder>
There you see the real "empty trash.aif". Might want to make a backup copy of that somewhere. And put your new "empty trash.aif" in its place there. Have to restart to make it go in effect. Enjoy!
    It works for me!
