Changing the Public Folder name or owner's name of a MacBook running 10.5

Hi
Does anyone know how or if, I can change the name of my Public Folder or alternatively change my MacBook's owner name?
It seems crazy that after years of releasing software Apple would default a folder name to the full name of the owner with no shortname option and not warn you that the name you use would become a long winded folder name.
Thanks
John

Hi,
To change the name of your computer just open System Preferences from the Applications folder and click on sharing.
Click on the lock in the bottom left corner of the window if it is locked. At the top of the window there is a box with the computer name in it, just change this to what you want.
I would advise against changing the name of the Public folder but if you don't want it to be viewable on the local network click on it and press command + i, under the general tab you can untick the shared folder option. You can then create another folder within your home directory (name it anything you want) and bring up the get info window and select the shared folder option.
Hope this helps

  • How do I change the 'tempuser' folder name?

Trying to set up an old (2006) Macbook for my daughter to replace her (even older) old one. I have an account with her name, but the documents and photos are stoored under a folder called "tempuser" which I think might confuse her. Can I rename that folder to 'Amina' or 'Mom' or 'Mine' or something? How? It won't allow a straight renaming of the folder.

I'm not sure how those steps worked for you.  Perhaps those used MacBooks had older operating systems.  The current 10.7+ will not allow you to change the Home Folder name.  You can move the contents of the old folder to a new folder using Terminal.  However, doing this will cause you to lose every personal setting, email accounts, browser history and on and on.  In fact, when booting up into the old username you are presented with all of the welcome stuff you get when you do a fresh install.  All of the files and applications and preferences are still on your disk, they are just no longer associated with your user.

I need to change the home folder name. I just bought this mac today and my cousin put his name in because he had to back up his phone while we were still at the store so he could get a new phone and now my brand new imac says his name in the home folder. This is very frustrating. I would not have let him put his name in there if I didn't think you could change it. Someone please help!

  • I traded for a mac; how can I change the home folder name?

Well I traded a PC for my first iMac and well...... I love it.
    1.  I'm running into a little problem though; I can't seem to change the home folder name to my name.  Although I know it doesn't affect any of the operation of the system or my settings, it psychologically upsets me.
    2.  Also, is there a way to assign my Apple ID to the computer or does that not matter either?
    3.  I also see a little lag when trying to connect to the web, but once I do get on it seems pretty beefy, any suggestable reasons?
    4.  And the final question, did I make the right decision? I traded a Sony Vaio S series tablet (laptop/PC) with an Intel core i5 @ 2.30ghz for an iMac with an Intel Duo Core processor @ 3.06ghz. I've heard the numbers don't really matter but some clarification would help.

Trying to address some of your questions:
You state you are running Mountain Lion? Was that the original OS on the Mac? That is very important because:
    a) if it was, the seller/trader needed to transfer the Mountain Lion license to you or it will stay with his Apple ID;
    b) if he purchased ML, he is required to uninstall it before selling the machine because the license is not transferable, which means - again - that it is tied to his Apple ID (along with the machine ID).
Both/either can present some problems for you since ML is now tied to someone else's Apple ID. If you manage to "introduce" your Apple ID, it will no longer match the records MAS (Mac App Store) has, so updates or other purchases may present problems.
I would suggest that you either call Apple or book an appointment at the nearest Genius Bar and ask them how to proceed - that way you may be able to set up your own Apple ID on the machine as well as get ML registered as yours (although, as explained above, they may require you to purchase it for yourself).
Whether or not you made the right decision - well, I've never owned a Windows machine, so I can't answer your question since I have nothing to compare it with. Obviously, I use Macs...... you should be able to run your own test: just do what you normally do and see if it appears to take about the same time, is faster, or is slower.

  • Can I globally change the itunes folder names

Due to some complicated circumstances regarding setting up a new laptop and copying my iTines media files across, I have created the following situation:
    1. All files are under a folder called iTunes/iTunes Media in their appropriate folders e.g. iTunes/iTunes Media/Beatles
    2. All of these files have been duplicated in a sub folder called iTunes/iTunes Media\Music e.g.  iTunes/iTunes Media/Music/Beatles
At some point, and due to some jiggery pokery on my part that I cannot remember, I have iTunes pointing to a mixture of these i.e. some albums are located in the ITunes Media folder and some in the Music sub folder
I need to remove the duplicate folder  to free up space on my laptop so would like to simply globally change any reference in locvations of iTunes/iTunes Media\Music to iTunes/iTunes Media\Music
This would solve my issue rather than trawl through thousands of missing location files and individually changing these. is this possible at the database level?

Rather than delete anything by hand I suggest you start by fixing the broken links with my script FindTracks.
You could then import the iTunes Media folder to reattach any orphaned files to the library.
You can then dedupe with my DeDuper script. See this thread for background and please take note of the warning to backup your library before deduping (actually that should be the first thing you do).
Finally turn Keep organize... off, then turn it back on again. Also make sure under File > Library > Organize Library that Reorganize files in the folder iTunes Media is greyed out. If not, tick the box and press OK.
The aim is to end up with the library set out as described in make a split library portable.

  • I am totally new to the whole mac thing and have just bought my first iMac, second hand, 27" late 2009 model, I have been trying to change everything from the previous users names to mine when I got stuck trying to change the home folder name...

I tried everything to change it but nothing would work, I seen a tutorial online on how to do it using terminal, suso, I didn't really know what I was doing but I gave it a go, entered the existing name and then entered my name, I then confirmed with password, everything seemed fine, I restarted my computer and when I booted up I had lost everything, all the apps had gone, mail, files, everything?! This mac had the full adobe 6 suite on and I'm really gutted, I had also transfer loads of things over from my pc, which are no longer there!! Is there any way to get this back? Like on a pc, running the pc from a week ago? Any help would be much appreciated as I don't really know what I'm doing, thanks

It appears that you really screwed things up. If the machine had CS 6 on it, the seller should have provided the discs and registration info. Since that machine shipped with Snow Leopard, you should start from scratch. Boot with disc one, launch Disk Utility from the Utilities menu, select the HD, erase and reformat it, then select zero out data from the security options. Once the HD is wiped clean, quit Disk Utility, and select install the operating system. Once installed and it reboots, personalize the machine to suit your needs. Once up an running, see these:

  • Getting default Public Folder names again

I just installed Leopard and updated to 10.5.4. I set up two users both as Admins. When I set up File Sharing, both user's public folders, were already installed, and were named "[username]'s Public Folder". This was great as they both showed up with their different respective names when accessed.
I then changed the User Names of both Admin accounts. The second user Admin account automatically changed the Public Folder's name (in the file sharing section), to match the new User Name but the first Admin account did not, retaining the original User Name I had given the main Admin account. Trying in vain to get it to change to match, (you can't rename the public folder there), I removed it from the shared folder field and added it back. While successful, it now only has the name "Public" rather than "[username]'s Public Folder".
Can anyone help me get the original OS default name back again?

I see. as I said I don't know how to do it properly but you can try the follwoing (admittedly clumsy) workaround.
Rename your public folder. It's not quite easy to do actually because that folder is protected by a deny delete ACL and you won't be able to rename it without some extra work.
First run the following command in terminal ( from the same account as that Public folder) to remove the ACL.
    chmod -N ~/Public
You can now rename it as you like. Let's say you call it
    Joe's Public folder
(or whatever). You can put the deny delete ACL back if you want to protect that folder from accidental deletion as it was by default. to do that run the following terminal command
chmod +a "everyone deny delete" ~/"Joe's Public folder"
keep the quotes in the command. I'm not sure if there is any downside to doing this. It might be that the name of the Public folder is hard coded somewhere and renaming it will have some unintended consequences. I tested it on one of my accounts and everything seems to work fine there but something might still come up later. If it does you can always rename the folder back to Public.

  • Owner of the public folder is not able to move or remove or create items underneath

    Scenario:
"ABCD" is the parent folder to which the user A given owner rights using EMC console.
system admin creates 2 new sub-folders underneath and given user A with "owner" rights. Now the problem is out of 2 sub-folders one works fine(it means "user A" got full rights) and other one does not allow the "user A" to move,
    remove, created items.
Issue is specific to only one user, any more ideas if you can suggest me to resolve this please?
this is for Exchange 2010 SP3 environment.

    Hi,
From your description, this issue affects only one user.
Please use the Get-PublicFolderClientPermission -Identity "public folder" command to check the permissions.
If possible, please remove and re-add the public folder permission to check result.
If you have multiple DCs, please make sure there is no replication issue.
Besides, please run the get-mailbox  | fl default* cmdlet to check the default public folder mailbox and compare with other normal users.

  • Is there a way of changing the jdevappunknown_ folder that Ant deploys to?

Using Ant DeployESBSuitcase doesn't work when deploying Projects with dependencies.
    Steps to re-create error:
Create a JDeveloper ESB Project called ‘ProjectB’ and add file adapter called ‘WriteFile’ to write a file. Deploy this project using JDeveloper.
Create another JDeveloper ESB Project called ‘ProjectA’ and add a file adapter called ‘ReadFile’ to read a file.
From ProjectA’s routing service add a routing rule and use ‘Browse Target Service Operation’ (Gear wheel icon) and select the deployed ProjectB_WriteFile service.
    Deploy ProjectA using JDeveloper.
Use Ant to create a deploymentplan file for both projects by running the ExtractESBDeploymentPlan target.
Note: As these projects are saved under their own directory structure
C:\Workspace\Local\ProjectA and C:\Workspace\Local\ProjectB you will need to copy the ..\ProjectB\ProjectB_WriteFile.wsdl to the ProjectA folder.
Confirm that ProjectA and ProjectB Ant build files DeployESBSuitcase properties (esbMetadataServerHost and esbMetaServerPort) point to another server other than the one you have just deployed ProjectA and ProjectB to using JDeveloper. i.e. a clean server that doesn’t know about these Projects
Deploy ProjectB using Ant’s DeployESBSuitcase target.
Deploy ProjectA using Ant’s DeployESBSuitcase target.
    An error is now thrown

This is due to Ant deploying ProjectB under …\ESB_Projects\jdevappunknown_ rather than …\ESB_Projects\Local_ProjectB

    James,
Following my steps above I don't get anything in the deploymentPlan for either ProjectA or ProjectB which includes a WSDL URL I can modify.
ProjectA includes the ProjectB_WrieFile.esbsv file which contains the following line:
    <wsdlURL>esb:///ESB_Projects/Local_ProjectB/ProjectB_Write.wsdl</wsdlURL>
Is there something I can change which will mean when I regenerate the deploymentPlan it will include the WSDL location?
    Thanks

How do I change the itunes user name on my iphone? When I attempt to purchase an app or update the existing ones, the previous owner of this iphone has their information displayed and asks for the password as their user name is automatically prompted?

The apps are tied to the account from which they were purchased.  If the apps were purchased from the previous owners account, then they would have to be updated from that account.  you should not have these apps anyway.  You need to buy your own.
Read the manual.  it will tell you how to sign into your account to buy apps.

  • How do I change the Home file name back to Home?

Help! - How do I change the Home file name back to Home? My supplier changed it to Demo. I've tried pressing return, control click and Get Info but none gives access to change the name. Any ideas?

The Home folder isn't named "Home." It is named for the user account it represents.
Who is your "supplier?" Sounds like they're not terribly bright.
Can you provide some details on why they "changed" it. Is this a brand new Mac? Were you having information transferred from another computer?
It sounds like you just need to create a new account and get rid of "Demo."
While logged into the "Demo" account, go to System Preferences in the Apple Menu.
    Click on Users & Groups
If the padlock is locked, click on it and enter your password.
Click the + button at the bottom of the list of users. This will create a new account. Fill in the information you'd like to use for your account. The account name is what will be used for the "Home" folder.
Once created, select it from the list and check the box to "Allow user to administer this computer."
You can then log out of "Demo" and log in as your new user. If there is nothing in the Demo account that you want, you can delete it from the Users & Groups System Pref.

  • Used Macbook Pro, trying to change the admin/user name. I've tried to change it, but wasn't successful.

I'm relatively new to Mac, and I'm still learning my way around my Macbook Pro 2010 from this summer. I was using terminal to do some class in work, and I keep noticing that the user name is something close to 'hello$' (as shown in the screenshot). I purchased this from another Mac user, and some of the settings weren't restored; like the user name and default language on the notebook was in Chinese.
In short, how do I change the user name. Also shown in the screenshot is my name, as you can see I already tried to change the computer's name/admin name.
also, if anyone could answer this simpler question: How do I save the preferences on my terminal to remain the color I have now. Everytime I quit Terminal it reverts back to the same black text - white background.
