Changing to FCP from FCE

I have used FCE for 2 years and for various reasons have just purchased the FCP Studio bundle. I have had a problem with FCE not printing to video and some problems with producing DVDs with iDVD--not picking up Chapter markers and DVDs not playable on many players. I hope that with this upgrade some or all of these problems will be eliminated.
Due to the problems with FCE I would like to remove it all before installing FCP. What is the best way to do this?
---but, I have a current project in FCE that I would like to transfer to FCP. What would be the best way to do this?

I recently upgraded from FCE to FCP as well and I used this article to remove FCE.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301182
I'm not sure about your project... you may want to keep the Final Cut Express Documents and not delete those since your project file is most likley there...
Hope this helps.

  • Upgrade to FCP from FCE

Can anyone give me an idea of the learning curve when upgrading from FCE to FCP. It looks as the the programs are quite similar on the surface but I have never seen this question directly answered. I am also somewhat intimidated by Compressor, DVD Studio Pro ect since I currently output to iDVD.
Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I upgraded from FCE to FCP last year. I used FCE for 5 years. I am not a professional but I do a fair amount of multicamera work for local ballet companies. I record and create the DVDs for their performances and individual dancers. I do it for fun and to help out the dancers.
I upgraded to FCP in order to obtain the multicamera feature in FCP. It has been worth it to me. There was very little difference in the learning curve in most aspects of logging, editing, compositing, etc. There are a ton of professional equiptment oriented input and output features that only professionals would need in FCP. I don't understand most of them but I don't need them either.
I use iDVD and not the DVD studio professional app because iDVD is so easy and the final DVDs are so beautiful. Someday I will learn DVD pro when I have some time.
Compressor has been handy, though. Sometimes a ballet will last longer than 2 hours.
Also, I bought a book about FCP which really helped.
So, I would say that you should upgrade to FCP from FCE if there are certain features that you need in FCP or the FC Studio bundle. Or if you have the cash and just want to have the top of the line program go for it. Otherwise I would stick with FCE because is is 98% of FCP and such an unbelievable software deal.

  • Upgrading from FCE to FCP

Is there any way to upgrade from FCE to FC studio or do I have to buy the whole studio suite?
Im running Final Cut Express 2 btw.
    -Mads Meskalin

    Hi
No as Ian R. Brown writes there are non. But sell Your FCE then You get something.
    Why FCP ?
There are most probably many individual reasons. Mine was
    • Ability to share a project with others haveing FCP
    • The Multi Camera editing is avesome - but only if You got more than one Camera recordings.
    • Color corrector - three ways with - white, black and mid tone drop tools
    I really like this one.
Then there are so much more in the bundle
    • DVD Studio Pro WITH HD
    • Motion
    • Color
    • Soundtravk Pro
    • Compressor
So much new to learn - AND STILL SO Familiar miljoe.

  • FCP 5 Upgrade From FCE

I recently bought an FCP 5 upgrade (M9921Z/A) and the Apple website says that it can upgrade from FCE. I know it's old but couldn't afford to buy FC Studio 2 and couldn't find a full-up version of FCP5. I've tried it with both an FCE 2.0 and FCE 3.5 S/N and neither works. Has Apple caused me to waste money or is there some solution to this problem? Does anyone have an unused FCP S/N that I could use? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. . .

    Larry,
The only "upgrade" from FCE to Final Cut Studio 1 was a limited time offer that was known as the Crossgrade Program. The program lasted for a bit over a year and expired back in March prior to the release of Final Cut Studio 1. This program allowed Final Cut Express and Pro users to obtain the Universal version of Final Cut Studio 1. This was a paid upgrade and only worked if you filled out a form, and mailed in your original install discs. For users that were already using FCS 1 (PPC version), they were sent back a set of Universal Install discs, which utilized their original serial numbers. For any other upgrades, (i.e. from FCP 4, or FCE), a set of install discs were mailed back along with a retail serial number, not an upgrade serial.
Apple no longer sells Final Cut Pro 5 at any of their stores. The only version of FCP available at Apple is FCS2. It is not possible to use an Express serial number to "Upgrade" to Final Cut Pro.
Where did you purchase this "upgrade"?
The only help you are going to receive here is basically going to tell you to contact Apple directly, or get FCS2. Discussion on how to illegally obtain Serial numbers is strictly forbidden, and is against the forums terms of use, as well as against the EULA.

  • AC3 Dolby files created from FCE to Compressor don't play in DVDSP

I've never had trouble with AC3 audio files playing in DVDSP until I started exporting from FCE through Compressor directly. AIFF files exported this way play fine, but are sometimes so large that the video+audio is too much for a DVD. This is why I like AC3 files, they are Dolby stereo, and they are way smaller, allowing me to use higher bit rates in Compressor for the video.
Now, when I export using Compressor and specify audio as Dolby 2.0 (AC3) the audio will not play in DVDSP. However, if I create an AIFF file at the same time it plays fine, and I can run the AIFF files back through compressor selecting AC3 output and those files work fine in DVDSP.
What gives? I'd like to be able to encode my audio as AC3 at the same time as I make my MPEG-2 file of the video, and then go directly to DVDSP. Any idea why this is happening, only when exporting from FCE directly through Compressor?
    Thanks!

    --UPDATE--
I found a series of bizarre workarounds that let me get AC3's from Compressor to work in DVDSP under my aforementioned configuration.
First, rather than using the "Export Using Compressor" option in Final Cut Pro, I used the "Export Audio As AIFF(s)" Option, creating a stand-alone AIFF of my timeline audio.
Next, I opened Compressor from the applications folder (again, not through FCP), and dragged the AIFF into the batch window. On the popup menu in the batch window, I selected "Audio Formats--> Dolby 2.0". I chose my destination and encoded. I did not change any settings in the Dolby 2.0 preset.
In DVDSP, if I clicked import in the assets window and selected the newly encoded AC3, it would show up in the assets bin, but the file STILL would not work. I removed the file from the assets bin.
Just for the heck of it, I opened a new finder window from the dock, found the file, and dragged it directly into the DVDSP assets bin. The file works!!! I couldn't believe it. Double clicking the AC3 in the finder with DVDSP open also places the AC3 into the assets bin, where it also functions properly.
I tried this procedure several times in a row and with several encoded AC3's to make sure it wasn't a fluke, and it wasn't.
So, again, clicking import for AC3's in DVDSP = BAD. Dragging AC3's right in the assets bin from the finder, or double clicking AC3's in the finder = GOOD.
The procedure mentioned above also *does not* work with AC3's made through one of the "DVD Presets" from Compressor. You have to take an **AIFF** into Compressor directly and send it out as an AC3 for it to work.

  • FCP v FCE

I have a mate asking me what the differences are between FCP and FCE....the price is dramatic but I couldn't tell him what exactly is different. He wants to begin editing small projects for use on the net, so nothing major. I said FCE would be fine for that, am I missing anything...?
    Cheers

When I purchased my first Seagate hard drive I paid $1500 for less than 2 Gig. That doesn't give them the right to force me to buy 4 TB disc array with a new ESATA PCI card.
In a free market prices and product are constantly changing based on competition and market forces. People should have the right to choose the best product for the best price.
And in all fairness, in my original post I did acknowledge what an astonishing value the FCS suite is for those who actually NEED it.
Right now I just want to install FCP on my MBP. Since my version of FCP is from FCS-1 that's not possible. And if I want to simply upgrade FCP from 5.x to 6.x it's going to cost me $500. I need ProRes and other features in FCP so FCE is not an option.

In the meantime I'll just grudgingly pile cameras and lights in the back seat. I can't believe that they forced me to buy the whole thing.
Ken - Your analogy is way off target. FCS is not one product. A better analogy would have been the purchase of a living room set and being forced to by lamps, paintings and chairs that you don't need.

I don't want Premiere and Encore. I've been a FCP user since it was first offered by Apple. I just want to be able to install the software that I paid for onto my laptop without being forced to pay another $500.
And I have nothing against capitalism as long as it's done under the context of a FREE market with fair competition. Frankly I'm astonished that Adobe even bothers to write code for macs at all any more.

Hi Jerry - I agree with you 100%. And I am looking forward to exploring and upgrading each of the applications when and if I need them. Right now I just want to install FCP onto my MBP.
...Then of course there's STP... you must be kidding me that you don't need it...
That's a perfect example of my situation. I am an audio / music professional first. My investment in audio applications and hardware completely eclipses my investment in FCS. And I will run circles around anyone using STP with my applications of choice.
...When Apple did sell the apps separately, everyone just bought the bundle because it was a bargain. It still is...
As I said i my original post, I agree that the bundle price is astonishing. But I will have to respectfully disagree with you on that topic. If everyone was purchasing the bundle then Apple would not have made it a mandatory purchase for FCP users and eliminated the option for customers to choose the applications which applied to their individual needs.
Thanks for your civilized and thoughtful reply to my post.

"...At least the OP got an answer to their question..."
Actually no. The OP was trying understand why FCP was so much more expensive than FCE. He asked: "...the price is dramatic but I couldn't tell him what exactly is different..."
He got a link to a long thread on another user forum which eventually had a post that explained the other apps and how they were bundled. Apple does not provide a side by side comparison and the OP is not the only person struggling with finding this information.
I answered his question directly on this forum. My advice was relevant.

"...So, they give you more than you need and they are ripping you off..."
No, I NEVER said that FCS was a Rip-Off.
What I was suggesting was that they are giving me more than I need and making me pay more than I would like. And, using the difference to subsidize the cost of other expensive applications.
As I've said over & over. I think FCS is an AMAZING value for 1200 bucks. But I own FCS-1, bought and paid for, and all I want is a UB version of FCP 5.x to install on my laptop or a reasonable upgrade path to FCP6.
If I could pay the equivalent of what they are charging for FCE and get an upgrade to FC6 there would be no need for this discussion. But Apple has not provided a path for such an upgrade at a reasonable price.
Offer the FCS suit for $1200 GREAT. But still offer the other products a-la-carte at prices which when combined would exceed the price of the Suite. And more importantly let people who purchase FCS at least UPGRADE apps individually!
Let the market forces take over and see what happens.

  • Export from FCE to iDVD, results in black border around movie

    Here is the problem....
I have edited a movie in FCE where all of the footage is 1440 x 1080
I export it using: File -> Export... QuickTime movie
I choose "self contained" movie and "audio/video", plus "chapter markers" in the pop up menu.
I then take this into iDVD amd all looks ok in the preview, but once burnt to DVD, there is a large black border around the entire movie.  It is almost like it is a smaller movie which does not fill the screen correctly.
Any idea why this happens and how to overcome this. When I lok at the exported movie from FCE- it is 720-x576 and not the full size- is this the problem?
    Thanks for any tips.

    Hi
    Is it widescreen ?
Did You in Your browser window set sequence and material to anamorphous. To me it was a revelation that the Browser window was exstendably to the right with lot's of columns - and one of them was Anamorphous.
Did you start a WideScreen project in iDVD - First window that opens after You clicked Start a New iDVD project (top button). At bottom this new window You set 4:3 (SD format) or 16:9 for WideScreen.
In iDVD You also need to go up to Project and down to Projectinfo
then set 16:9 here TOOO !
Proportion - Change it to 16:9
When I go from FinalCut to iDVD - I do
    FCE/P to iDVD
    Several things
    • How to go from FCE/P to iDVD
    • Free space on Start-up hard disk
    • Encoding
    • Brand and type of DVDs used
    • Burn speed set
    • iDVD BUG
    • Chapters
How to go from FCE/P to iDVD I do
    • Disable Screen and Energy saver
    • IMPORTANT --> FIRST in FinalCut - Mix Down Audio under Sequence Menu / Render Only / Mix-down
    • Export out as a QuickTime .mov file
    • Select with Mark - Chapter Mark
    • Not as Self-Contained (not important but saves time and space)
    • NO QUICKTIME CONVERSION (IMPORTANT)
This QT.mov file I import into iDVD from within iDVD.
Free space on Start-up hard disk
I set a minimum of 25GB (for Mac OS and iDVDs temp files)
    Encoding
    • I use Pro Quality encoding
Brand and type of DVDs used ( Important as cheap brands DO NOT WORK )
    • I use Verbatim
    • I use DVD-R
    Burn speed set (IMPORTANT)
    • I set down this to x4 (or x1)
    iDVD BUG
    • One can not go back to movie-project for any alterations and then go back to
the iDVD project. It will notice and ask You to either Up-date or Cancel. Neither
    of them will work.
Medicine - Start a brand new iDVD project.
    Use of Chapters
    • I only use a to z and 0 to 9 in naming them. NO other symbol/letter !
    • NO Chapter-mark at very beginning - iDVD NEEDS TO set this by it self
    • No Chapter marks in or within two seconds from a transition
(Way around this last one - Export movie as QT full quality and NO Chapter marks
Import this into a new Movie-project and now You are free to set C-Ms where You want
them except at very beginning - still)
    Material used to build movie
    • video - I use streamingDV (or convert all other to this e.g. .mp4, .avi, .wmv etc)
    • audio - I use .aiff 16-bit 48kHz or from Audio-CD (44.1kHz) - no .mp3 or direct from iTunes
    • photos - I use .jpg - no .bmp etc
Problems - then Trash iDVD pref. file and run Repair Permissions - and have a re-try.
    from post ??
May not be relevant, but I had the same problem with iDVD, where burned DVDs showed a green screen. It was cured by quitting Quicksilver and Quickeys as well as disabling sleep and screen-saving

  • How to export from FCE to mini dv?

Im trying to print the film I made back onto minidv, but I must be doing something wrong... I click the option of Print to Video etc and it plays back and even starts recording on the camera but nothing is recorded on the camera, it just stays on the blue screen. Can anyone help?
Can you not use firewire to export it back onto the minidv tape? do I need some other kind of cord?

You need to set up FCE to output to Firewire - do this in View > Video > Firewire. Once you have set that option, in FCE you can send output to your camera via Print to Video or just by playing the timeline.
But your camera also needs to be ready to record from the correct input. Normally the DV connector on your camera is used to play tapes (ie. output) to your Mac for capture by FCE. When you want to record from FCE back to your camera, you may have to change a setting in your camera to enable DV input - usually the choices are either a/v (meaning analog video) or DV (Firewire DV) video in.
Finally, your camera needs to be in VCR or VTR or Tape record mode (whatever your camera's manufacturer calls it), usually done via a button or two on the camera body. It is definitely not the setting for recording video through the lens.

  • Poor quality of from FCE to idvd

    Hello All,
We have used iDVD to burn our fce projects. This week we burned a reunion filmed mainly in doors. On FCE the footage looked fine as well as after exporting to QuickTime. Once burned on iDVD and played on a HD tv, the picture is extremely grainy. We switched the tv to standard screen which helps a little, but overall the quality is poor. Even the type on the chapter titles looks blurry. I tried changing the encoding preferences (in iDVD) to professional quality, but couldn't see much difference.
The original footage was filmed in hd and captured at 29.97 fps and hdv-apple intermediate codec 1080i60.
    Any advice would be great.
    Gobble Gobble,
    Jamie

    Jamie,
Please provide a little more information.
    1) How long is your movie, that is what is the play time?
    2) How did you get the movie to iDVD? The best way is to export the movie from FCE as a Quicktime Movie (not Quicktime Conversion). The close FCE and then open iDVD and then go get your movie from with in iDVD.
Also, I hope you realize you had HD material, but iDVD is Standard Definition. How good it looks depends a lot on how well your TV and your DVD player upscale.

  • Best codec for export from FCE?

Heya, I'm sort of a newbie, so please be patient with me
I'm trying to export a video from FCE using QT conversion.  I'm going to be putting it on Youtube.  What is the best codec for export?  I've always heard that H.264 is the 'best', but my videos have always been pale and washed out.  I tried exporting using MPEG-4 video, and it's not washed out.  Is H.264 better and I should just deal with the paleness, or does it not matter too much?
    Thanks

All the Web video sites re-compress your videos. So it's generally best to upload high quality files – typically determined by bit rate.
My suggestion would be to export as a Quick Time movie at current settings. (Guessing that you edited an AIC sequence,)
If you don;t have MPEG Streamclip, do a search and download it. In Streamclip, open the file you exported from FCE. Export to Quick Time. For Compression, choose H.264 from the drop down menu. Don't change Frame Size. If your movie is interlaced, check De-interlace. Check the Limit Data Rate box and type in 12,000 if the size of your movie is1080; 6,000 if your movie is 720; 3,000 if your movie is 480.
Use the YT uploader and you should be good to go.

  • Question on Upgrading from FCE to FC Studio2

I'm currently using FCE HD 3.5, which I upgraded from FCE version 1.0
I understand that no upgrade path exists from Final Cut Express to Final Cut Studio 2.
However I have seen on ebay someone selling an upgrade to Final Cut Pro 5 HD from Final Cut express.
I was wondering.... if I got this then could I then get a Final Cut Studio 2 Upgrade from FCP 5 HD?
Does anyone see any problems with doing this? It seems to be a way to save money.
    Thanks,
    Steve.

    Tom,
One other question: assuming that my upgrade from FCE to FCP5 is successful. Then how does the upgrade package for Final Cut Studio2 work (If I decide at some future point to upgrade again)
Will it detect my FCP5 files or will I have to enter the FCP5 serial number, and if so then will I get into trouble at that point. Bottom line is will Studio2 accept the FCP5 serial number?
    Thanks Tom,
    Steve.

  • Will iDVD 08 recognize chapter markers from FCE 3.5 HD?

Will iDVD 08 recognize chapter markers from FCE 3.5 HD?
    Thanks, Ed

A qualified "yes". Meaning it should work as stated but in practice there are some issues. There are fewer issues with FCE => iDvd6 than there currently are with iLife'08. I don't have a good explanation for this.
Btw, this is strictly an observation on my part from reading this forum. Keep in mind I do not own / work with FCE but rather with FCP => DVDSP as well as with apple's i-Apps.

my daughter has changed her phone from an iphone to a nokia but kept the same number but when i send her a message from my iphone it still comes up as an i messsage and she doesnt receive it can anybody tell me how to fix this please

She needs to remove that device from the iMessage database, or if she still has the phone, she can go into Settings, Messages and turn off iMessage. If she still has the phone, she just needs to put the SIM back in for a couple of minutes to turn that off.
If she does not have the phone any more, she will need to go to her Support Profile, if she registered the phone and delete the phone from the profile.

Why am I unable to change text color from black in LR5 Book Module?

I'm assuming you clicked on the color patch besides the word <Character> to open the color picker window.
At the right side of this window there is a vertical bar that has 2 horizontal black lines at the bottom.
This is actually a slider. Pull it upwards with the color picker and color will appear in the window.

I dont know how to change it exactly.....as im beginner in SAP...pls take this into consideration...and post ur replies imm.
Pls reply me in detail....will be rewarded at the end while closing this issue.
    thanks & regards
    sankar

    Dear Sankarbabu,
IF there's no setting for Date Check in OS54 - Engineering Change Management
Control Data, then you can create a change number with past dates, and also to
use the same one for changing BOM.
Tell me one thing you are saying you want to use ECM.Was the earlier one
created without BOM was created without an ECN?
See already if you have created your BOM with an ECN,then remove the date
check setting which I have mentioned in OS54.
Now goto T code CC02 ,enter the Change number and give the valid from date as
    01.10.2007.
After that check in CS03 whether this date(01.10.2007)is getting reflected or not.
I'm sure this will solve your problem.
