Changing to NTFS in Lion

I want to change the format of an external hdd to ntfs file system in lion. How do i do that?

OS X does not have native support for writing to (and therefore formatting a drive as) the NTFS format. However, this is somewhat possible to do on an Apple system.
The first option is to get a FUSE implementation of NTFS, which instead of having a kernel-specific driver, offers the filesystem support as a plugin (FUSE stands for "Filesystem in USErspace). I am not too certain of the development status of current builds, but these have offered rudimentary options to format a drive as NTFS.
The second option is to use a virtual machine and set up Windows or another OS that fully supports NTFS, and then use that to access the external drive directly and format it.
The last approach is to install Windows in Boot Camp and likewise use that to format the drive.

Do those previous lines have a Return/Linefeed after them, or are they just wrapped to a new line?

Hi, before I make the change to OS Mountain lion I would like to know if it supports Quicken Essential version 1.6.1? My current version is OS 10.7.4?

The Quicken Essentials For Mac website probably has the answer.  You might check there.
I just did check there and it says Lion.  It does not mention Mountain Lion.  You might have to contact their customer support people and find out if they have an upgrade or are in the process of releasing one.

  • How to change To address in Lion Mail message list pane

I quite like the new Lion Mail app although I return to "Classic Layout" whenever I need to sort and clean up my inbox, but for general use the two-column layout with the message list on the left and the selected message content on the right works nicely for me. I would however like very much to change the "To" line in the message list. Currently my list of received messages shows "To" on the first line to the right of a picture of the "To" person. On the far right of this line is the time or date of receipt in blue. Under this first line is a little icon with "To" or "Cc" - sometimes, and that is followed by the subject. On the right of this second line is the mailbox and account. I have set preview to no lines to keep the list as compact as possible.
What I would dearly like to change is the To address in the first line. I know who the To is - it's Me! Occasionally the To shows another name if that person precedes my name in the list of recipients. What would be VERY useful is if this data showed the From address!
In the Classic View I can move the email columns around, adding new columns and removing them. Either way, in my inbox I can have the From address right in front of me. Is there any way of changing the To address to the Originator address - the From address - in the message list in Lion mail?
    Thanks - Lawrence

Thanks, but that controls the header detail shown for the message in the right pane. So if I select a message in the message list on the left pane, the method you describe controls what header detail I see in the right pane when the selected message is displayed. The piece of data I really want to change is the first line of the message information contained in the message list in the left pane. It currently shows the To address in this window, which is useless to me; the From address on that first line - next to a picture from my address book of whoever is sending the message - would be infinitely more useful.

  • I upgraded to Lion and since then my desktop graphic changes back to the Lion 'default' desktop graphic every time I start up.  I change it in System preferences, but next start up it is back to the default.

This problem just started when I upgraded to Lion OSX 10.7 and it makes no sense.  When the new OS was installed, it replaced my Desktop graphic with a blue background starry asteroid like you see in the Lion promos.  I went to System prefeences and changed it back to what I had, and it switches just fine, but when I shut down and restart, my graphic is gone, the old asteriod thing is back again.  I don't like looking up at my name on the screen where the clock is supposed to be either, but I will get over that since I can't change it.  I do want to know if anyone knows how to make your graphic for the Desktop stay the same through shutdown and restart, it is something so basic. I'd appreciate any help, Thank you!

Thanks so much but none of that helped.  It was driving me crazy because it would back up another external drive.  I just changed the name of the drive from iPhoto/iTunes Library to Media Libraries and IT WORKED!! I guess for some reason it didn't like the drive being called iPhoto or iTunes ???? I don't understand but I have tried so many solutions and exchanging things out but the name change did it????!!!
Thank you for your help and replying to this.  Guess I made my own issue!

  • Shortcut for changing "from" field in Lion Mail?

I manage a number of email accounts from Mail, and frequently need to send messages from one account, and then another account, and then another account ... In Snow Leopard, I enjoyed creating shortcuts to change the "from" field of an outgoing message.  For example, in the keyboard system preferences pane, I assigned the command "My Name <[email protected]>" the shortcut of "SHIFT+CMD+X".  That way, while writing an email, if I noticed that it was about to send from the wrong account, I'd just hit the keystroke instead of grabbing my mouse.  Mail apparently knew what I was doing, because on the drop-down tab for "From", each of my mail accounts also showed the custom assigned shortcut.
This ability seems blocked in Lion.  Whenever I try to re-create these shortcuts in the preferences / application-shortcuts pane, they won't work!  What's worse, whenever I quite and re-open System Preferences, I find that my shortcuts have been re-assigned an extra open-bracket, such as: ">My Name <[email protected]>".
Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?  Is it possible to re-create these shortcuts in Lion Mail?

So Entourage can go to the previous message?  How do you do that?
I can't stand that Mail always goes to the next newest message after deleting.
Every other email program I've ever seen (including Entourage - see below) can do this.  Why can't Apple?  I don't want to touch the mouse most of the time because it really slows down work to move ones hands back and forth.   I did a quick web search and found these shortcuts for all the major programs.  If you know of any other program besides Apple Mail that doesn't have this, let me know.
Until then, if Outlook, Outlook Express, Entourage, Sparrow, Postbox, and Thunderbird have had this, what's Apple's problem adding it?

  • How to change timestamp for MacMail (Lion) - 3hours ahead

    Hello
How do you change the timestamp in MacMail (Lion)? It is three hours ahead. My computer time is correct (Pacific time).
For example, I send something at 9AM it says 12PM.
Please let me know if there is something in the preferences I can change.
    Thanks in advance.

Ok. So how is your System Preferences, Date & Time set up? For example, Are you doing the "Set time zone automatically... " thing? Are you doing the "Set date and time automatically" thing? Have you set a time zone?  Etc.

  • How to make changes to Java for Lion

Forgive me, I am not experienced with Java Applets or the website I am mentioning in this post. I am asking for another person and have only been able to run tests and theories this evening.
It seems that the most recent Java upgrade has caused some issues with runescape.com Several Mac users at the site are reporting the same issue. When attempting to log into runescape an applet requests permission to access the computer. Actually, the warning window pops open and closed so quickly I have not been able to capture the text in it. Next, a Java Applet opens in the Dock and another warning/certificate window opens where the user can choose to Deny or Accept the certificte. Prior to the update the applet was handled within Safari. Apparently there were no additional steps to logging in. I recognize that Lion does not provide a Java runtime by default so I am wondering if changing that setting would enable runtime to do its thing without having to go through several approvals. The Java Applet runs anywhere from 28% to 100% (and sometimes more—I don't undestand that) of the CPU.
Alas, this is still not the main issue at play. Apparently the applet causes the application/website to respond v-e-r-y s-l-o-w-l-y Is there a way to achieve the same speeds that were available prior to the update? Ideas that I have been floating have been to downgrade from the present Lion/Java combination to Snow Leopard and the penultimate version of Java (next question: where can update 5 be downloaded). I have tried to install previous versions of Java but none are available for the Lion OS. Another option is to deny the applet and the user is taken to an alternate login page. The page loads the applet in Safari but there are severe limitations to the game (reported to me—I have no basis to compare). So what the user gets in speed is limited by the fact that they can only play in "one world".
In summary, my questions are this:
Does someone have a workaround for the Java Applet slowdown for this game, Runescape?
Is there a downgrade option available for Java in Lion? (my searching has not found one)
Is there a way to change the default runtime setting? (I have read at least one post where the user tried to edit settings in Java Preferences and they did not stick but they might not have restarted their browser)

    Hi,
ITS i dont have an idea but from portal we can do CTRL+RIGHT CLICK AND WE CAN HIDE THE FIELD.
Try the same in ITS in the iview out put.
Thre are some tables where we can hide some fields for old ESS/MSS packages.
    Try that.
If we are using portal we can go for NWDI ALSO.
    Thanks,

  • Uuid of drive changing after sleep in Lion

I have an external drive where I keep my mail. Under SL this worked fine. However now under Lion every few times my Mac wakes from sleep mail crashes saying it can't find mail folders. Then I noticed that time machine is doing full backups of the drive when this happens, wiping out older backups of course. When I look in the TM logs is says:
Event store UUIDs don't match for volume: 3TB Backup
    Deep event scan at path:/Volumes/Mail 1 reason:contains changes|must scan subdirs|new event db|
Notice the 1 after Mail. That isn't in the name of the drive. Again, never had this problem under SL.
The drive is a 3TB WD MyBook.

Thanks for the tip - though, in this case, it is a Mac Pro not a Macbook.
Apple had me move one of the drives to a thunderbolt port in the other "column" (there are 6 ports in to columns) and this seems to have resolved the problem, though I will change the ports back to how they were and see whether the problem resurfaces.

Installing Mountain Lion on your Mac does not change the visual appearance of the Safari app on your iPad and iPhone. In fact, installing Mountain Lion does nothing at all to your iOS devices.

  • SQL 2014 changed my NTFS permission - default backup directory setup

    Hello everybody.
Today I realize that new SQL 2014 changed my existing folder permissions (NTFS). This folder was shared for domain users and had set NTFS permissions for domain users and local administrators.
In setup of SQL I set backup directory to this shared folder and continued with setup. After finisting setup I realize that this folder is not accesible via network. Finally I realized that setup changed permissions - it added his MSSQL$INSTANCENAME account
into Security Tab and added all permissions to it. Other permissions was erased!
What the hell MS is wrong with you?
I must retake ownership to this folder and subfolder to fix it.
This is not funny and I think it is a BUG! I think that older SQL servers do not have begavior like this new one 2014.
Maybe it will be helpfully for somebody.
Maybe Microsoft found his lost saying - This is NOT a BUG, it is a FEATURE!
Have a nice day and keep calm.
    Jarda Nechvatal

it added his MSSQL$INSTANCENAME account into Security Tab and added all permissions to it.
    Other permissions was erased!
    Hello Jarda,
That's nothing new and you have this behaviour in all SQL Server Versions; the SQL Server Service account is the owner of all subfolders of the Installation, even because the account needs permissions to read+write to those folders. So it is not a bug, it's
by design and if you need different permissions on those folders then you have to define them manually.

  • Changing DNS Server on Lion OD/Kerberos Master

I have an interesting task ahead of me, but am unsure how best to proceed.
I spent days setting-up my new Lion Server and attached Pegasus RAID array.  There are 140 users, 8 share points, and hundreds of different ACL permutations within the AFP shares that reside on a thunderbolt-attached Pegasus array.  The only services running on the box are DNS, AFP, and OD.
I added a secondary server and intended to use it as an OD replica (redundancy is great, but the speed increase would also be great).  Problem is that I set them both with .local names.  I can't get an OP replica to run unless they are within the same DNS zone, and so that is what I am looking to do.
I have read a lot of Apple support documents and a couple books, and understand that changing the DNS server will likely break OD (certainly Kerberos).
My goal is to re-zone the DNS while preserving OD users, groups, passwords, and most importantly: how they relate to the ACLs on the Pegasus unit (I would very much like to avoid having to re-do all those permissions - particularly within the Lion Server UI).
If I need to do a re-install and then laterally migrate, I certainly can.  I am hoping for the path of least headache to be sure.
If anyone has advise on how to do this as painlessly as possible, I would appreciate it.

Will the OD archive contain the old DNS settings and somehow muck this up?
I don't know the answer to all of your questions but I do know this: If you have an OD archive from a master that had an incorrect hostname, this information was put into your archive.
"Open Directory" is comprised of three components: PasswordServer, LDAPv3 and Kerberos. This is what is backed up during an OD Archive. So if you have a archive from a machine with messed up DNS, I would not trust that everything will be fine after the restore.
Maybe somebody else can chime in and offer you further help...

  • Finder pops up when changing spaces/desktops in lion

Whenever I change screens on Lion, and I have 2 programs up across the screen (I put Word and Powerpoint half and half), a finder window will pop up in between the 2 programs, especially when it should just be on the background.
    To be more clear:
I click on both Word and PPT on Desktop 1 to put it on the foreground (with a finder window on the background), change screens to Desktop 2 and then back to Desktop 1. A finder window will pop up in front of either word or ppt. It's quite annoying. Anyone knows how to fix this?

I think you just have to live with it. That quirky kind of behavior would sometimes appear in Snow Leopard, too - for me anyway.  I am not sure if it is a weakness in  the OS or a weakness in the Microsoft code's compatibility with the OS. Or both.  On the one hand, it could just be that the OS moves FInder to the front in the new space and keeps it in front when you move back. On the other hand, I don't notice such things with my current suite of applications, so I wonder if it's Microsoft.
In any case, it can't hurt to be like Jimi Hendrix and feedback:

  • Change share name in Lion server?

Is there a way to change a share name in lion server? For example, I have a folder on my disk named "Sophos Anti-Virus" that I want to share via AFP. However, I want to share name to be simply "Sophos". I know I was able to do this somehow in 10.5 Server, but I can't seem to find a way to do it in Lion.

    Hi
A way of doing this would be to launch the Server App and select the File Sharing Service. Select the share point and click the 'minus' icon to remove the share.
Obviously warn users they should save any data they are accessing and to disconnect from the share first.
Once the share has been removed from the File Sharing Service navigate to the folder in the Finder and change the name. Go back to the File Sharing Service and click the 'plus' icon and re-add the newly named share.
    HTH?
