Changing Upstream DNS settings

I have an Xserve running OS X Server 10.4.11 and want to change the upstream DNS setting form my ISP's to OpenDNS. The DNS settings in Server Admin don't seem to provide this option and from what I've read, the system Network DNS setting must point to the internal DNS server.
I've read some reports that advocate editing /etc/named.conf but the exsiting file is very sparse and doesn't contain any forwarder entries.
Where the heck are these things set?
- Tim

Thanks Antonio
The Server Admin settings for 10.4 DNS are significantly different than 10.3.9 but the basic info is similar. Everything I read says I must edit the /etc/named.conf file and add the forwarders, but my named.conf file has no forwarder entries yet my DNS server DOES query my ISP's DNS for outside addresses. This must be set somewhere ... but where?
This is all there is in the named.conf file
// Declares control channels to be used by the rndc utility.
// This must be enabled on Mac OS X Server for Server Status to provide valid
// information! (Remove the leading slashes to enable.)
// ** STUFF YOU MIGHT NEED TO ENABLE **
controls {
// unix "/var/run/ndc" perm 0600 owner 0 group 0;
As you can see, there is none of the stuff you would expect, so it must be being done elsewhere.

How do I change the DNS settings to Business Catalyst but keep the MX settings for emails?
I'm basically created anew site using Muse and want to host it on BC and upgraded to the Web basics + to allow for hosting of downloadable pdf's etc.
There are up to 50+ emails address set up on the current set up and I want to just change the NDS settings for the domain to ponit to the new site/hosting an not have to worry about them chaning all the meail settings etc.
Records do I need to change in BC?
    Thanks

    Hi,
You shouldn't need to do anything as long as you do not state hosting email with BC.  Just ensure to check you DNS in a lookup tool that it's still referencing your external email service.
Otherwise you can set up external email set-up if the option is present.

  • Our company recently has changed our DNS settings to our network which has resulted in many of our iPhone users not being able to access Outlook mail on their phones.  Any ideas out there?

Our company has recently changed our DNS settings for our network mail server, and upgraded our SBS to 2010 Microsoft Exchange.  Since that change,  most of our iPhone users have not been able to acquire e-mail from our mail server.  We have three exceptions are 3GS and 4 phones.  Any ideas???

Speak to your exchange & DNS administrators at your company.
It is likely a configuration issue on the server/network side.  Event/IIS logs are key on your SBS.

  • Router Can't see My Website Anymore since changing its DNS

Neither my old Panther G5 nor my new Macbook running Leopard can see my website anymore since I changed its DNS settings (after server failure we had to move).
I use a Belkin 4-port router FSD5231-4, which sees all other websites on the web now, but not mine. Everyone else in the world, except me, can see http://www.goodnewsnetwork.org.
when mac is plugged straight into the cable modem it sees the website fine. Only when the router is in the mix, does the site go awol.
Belkin said I had to download an .exe file in order to reset the MTU settings. After I insisted there must be a way without using .exe, he said to go into Mac settings to reset MTU to 1400 (the ideal range is 1400-1500). When Apple support showed me how to get in to change the setting of MTU, we found it was already set to 1500, and didn't change the outcome.
Good News Network is still awol.
I looked on Belkin for firmware updates but my model number (above) returns "No documents found". I think updating would be a great idea.
Also, I tried resetting w the little hole in the back, but nothing changed (the paper clip wasn't able to push in the back of the hole at all, it seemed).

You shouldn't need to change the MTU on your router, nor should you need to factory reset it; a simple power cycle of it should be all you need if it's got your old DNS information cached.
I suspect your Mac may have the address cached as well.
Try shutting down your Mac, power cycling the router, then booting the Mac and see if that works.

  • Do DNS settings on Airport Extreme propagate to computers

I changed my DNS settings on AE ac.  Are these settings supposed to change the settings on every computer on the LAN?  If so, what conditions must prevail (e.g. Sys Pred>Network>Advanced must be unlocked)?

I've got clients on Ethernet  (6) and WiFi (15).  (Oh, this is a home.).
I know what it is like.. my router tells me I have 25 clients at the moment.. it is almost unbelievable in modern homes we have that much IP stuff connected.
I might otherwise have thought it was a business though.
I have double checked just now.. by using a test setup.
This is on a newly reconfigured airport (happens to be gen4 but that is not relevant).
In dhcp Internet mode.. and doing NAT and DHCP the default DNS server passed to the clients is the Apple router itself.
I have done these tests before but it is good to be reminded.
    So I have this setup.
And was hoping the DHCP would see the DNS and would pass 8.8.4.4 to the clients. No such luck. Although the AE itself should use 8.8.4.4 and whatever secondary DNS you set.
There is no place to actually set this up DNS server to the clients in the network tab.. it is typical apple minimalist.. DHCP Range being the only possible thing to set..
So when I check the ethernet on the computer I get
So the AE has substituted itself as the main DNS server in the clients. there is no check box to force ISP dns or any other dns values.
This is pretty much default on any router.. that it will use itself as a dns cache instead of directing clients to the internet directly.
The actual dns value used by the AE for lookups will be the one set in the internet tab though.. so it does not need to be set to ISP..
Is that going to work for you.. ??
If not you can force the clients to accept the DNS values via dhcp from the Airport router but only if you use static IP.
Now the rub.. you cannot use static IP on the main router, plugged into a cable router. .you must use DHCP so that will not work.
What you need is a different primary router.. or use one of your express in a different mode. ie doing Static IP.
I have posted the details of the setup a few times.
See Re: airport time capsule keeps disconnecting
I have suggested it for a situation here bridge was unreliable.. but I use this method to assign static IP and special DNS values to clients in my network that require access to US for TV don't you know.

  • Lock in DNS settings

    All,
As an admin, how do I lock myself out from changing the dns settings on my machine, allowing only another trusted user/admin access to those specific settings, without compromising the full fledged functionality of my admin account?

How about not messing with them? I don't get it, you don't trust yourself not to mess with the settings? I don't think there's any way for one admin to control the access of another admin.

  • DNS Settings problem

    Hi,
I have a mac pro with a Dual-Core Intel Xeon processor and am running OSX 10.6.8. I currently have 2 locations set up in Network system preferences as we have 2 different routers at work that we can connect through. One of these works fine but the othert location I need to change the DNS settings to match the router settings, which worked fine on the other 2 macs we have at work, but when I try to change it on this mac and apply it snaps back to the DNS settings that are in my other location.  I tried setting up new ones and deleting current locations but it won't allow this either. I've also tried running disk utility and also onyx to sort out permissions etc but none of these work. Has anybody else encountered this problem. Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks
    Kevin

The way it is supposed to work is that everything you need to connect in a specific way is stored in a "Location". Locations contain up to around a dozen settings from different controls that make that connection possible.
The easiest way to think about it is you have a "Location" for the office, where you might use Ethernet and certain DNS, speed, IP Address and connection particulars. You have another "Location" for Starbucks, where you use wireless and different parameters entirely. Choosing the appropriate "location" is supposed to substitue EVERY appropriate parameter, including DNS numbers, provided you have correctly included them in the "location".
So in your case, you should get all the settings working for Router-A, and capture that in a Location, then get all the settings working for Router-B and capture that in another Location. Then you should be able to switch back and forth rapidly without issue.

  • DNS Settings have Changed with Snow Leopard Update

Before I upgraded to SL, I was able to append a DNS server to the list of servers that my MacBook Pro acquired from the DHCP server. This way, I didn't have to manually edit my DNS settings all the time when I was in the office and wanted to access our lab network by name. Now after the upgrade, I have to remove all manually entered DNS servers before it will use the DNS servers given to it by the DHCP server. Is there a way that I can always append my lab DNS server to the list given to me by DHCP?
    Thanks,
    John

I am on or office wireless network which handles the DHCP lease and DNS addressing, but I am an engineer in the office and access the lab often and we have another DNS server in the lab to handle all of the lab network. The Sales folk don't need access to the lab so the DHCP server doesn't give out the lab dns server... I would like to access the lab via name, not IP, so I need the lab DNS server on my list of servers. If I can't append this to the DHCP list, I have to manually add all three every time I am in the office. I am frequently out at customer/vendor sites and use thier wireless, so I get thier DNS list.
Short answer is I need our lab DNS server on the list and frequently move from network to network... I want it to work the way it was before the "upgrade", which wasn't much of an "upgrade" if it breaks this. I want my Leopard back.

  • Changing DNS settings and OD accounts

We were having problems with our server, and found that it was because of DNS settings. We now have a FQDN, but nobody can log on. How do I import the users and groups to the new domain?

Check to make sure that your DNS is set up properly.
    In terminal:
    sudo changeip -checkhostname
Also...  Have you bound the clients to the server?  You have to do this in the System Preferences under Accounts in 10.6 and higher.
It's in the Directory Utility in 10.5
Once the client computers are bound to the server, you can start creating your User list in Workgroup Manager.
Unfortunately, there isn't a super easy way to automate this.  You have to set up your groups, set up your group preferences (if you want any), add your users, and apply them to the groups.
There are some tricks to making this easy, ie set up a user template...  That way all you have to do is type the user names and passwords (if you want them).

  • How do I change my NAT settings?

    WRT54GS router
How do I change my NAT settings?

Ok let me ask this. Can anyone tell me exactly what settings I need to put my WRT54GS router on for my 360. Ports, DNS, QoS, MTU, or anything else that might help. Please leave in detail as I am very ignorant with this router. I had Verizon DSL that went straight from a Westell modem/router to the 360. I never had lag and was host for a lot of sessions. I have now switched to cable which gives me a faster connection 4664/238kbps but for some reason the lag is horrible. What I have done so far is download new firmware. Enabled DMZ host IP address. Enabled QoS. Here I had to put the upstream bandwith to manual with 100000kbps. Port priority on high with flow control enabled to the 360(port 2). I disabled flow control to 2 unused ports. Optimize gaming applications with highest priority to port 2. So I am completely lost from here as what else to do or undo. I don't know how to increase my upload speed as I was told upload speed is extremely important for gaming. I feel like pulling my hair out at this point and switching back to a slower connection just to get my system the way it was. Please anyone help as I am extremely frustrated. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!??????????????

  • How can I reset my router's DNS settings?

I've got a network with a Time Capsule providing an ethernet connection for my desktop, as well as a wireless connection for my wireless devices. From my desktop, I run a website, hosted with a major remote web space provider. What's happened recently is that when I try to upload anything from Dreamweaver to my host, I get a nondescript (no error code) "FTP error." When I try to access my site from any of my browsers on any of the clients on the network, be they ethernet or wireless, I get a "could not connect to server" message. I tried down or just me, as well as a proxy, and they both worked; I narrowed down the problem to a DNS issue on my Time Capsule.
The URL in question is www.theapplenewsreel.com, and the corresponding IP is 216.250.121.1.
I tried running NSLOOKUP from Terminal, and I just got this:
Last login: Sun May 27 11:23:33 on ttys000
    my-imac:~ username$ NSLOOKUP www.theapplenewsreel.com
    Server:     127.0.0.1
    Address:    127.0.0.1#53
    Name:   www.theapplenewsreel.com
    Address: 192.168.1.111
Basically, the connection, for some reason, stays inside my local network. The rest of the Internet is accessible via all my devices without modifying any settings.
Problem is, I've got no idea how to fix the problem at this point. Can someone help?

The DNS server(s) IP addresses are typically provided to you by your ISP. If you connect a router to the ISP-provided modem, you can change the DNS servers to be used in the router settings and this includes the AirPort routers.
If you have a situation where you have two routers in series, the downstream router would normally be placed in bridge mode. This would disable both its NAT & DHCP services. Since DHCP is used to distribute the DNS server addresses to network clients, the router upstream of the second router. I believe this is what HACKINT0SH is referring two.

Do not delete the old account yet. sign up for an iCloud account if you haven't.
I understand .mac mail will still come through. Do not delete the old account yet.
You cannot use .mac or MobileMe as type of Account, you have to choose IMAP when setting up, otherwise Mail is hard coded to change imap.mail.me.com to mail.me.com & smtp.mail.me.com to smtp.me.com, no matter what you try to enter.
iCloud Mail setup, do not choose .mac or MobileMe as type, but choose IMAP...
On second step where it asks "Description", it has to be a unique name, but you can still use your email address.
    IMAP (Incoming Mail Server) information:
              •          Server name: imap.mail.me.com
              •          SSL Required: Yes
              •          Port: 993
              •          Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
              •          Password: Your iCloud password
    SMTP (outgoing mail server) information:
              •          Server name: smtp.mail.me.com
              •          SSL Required: Yes
              •          Port: 587
              •          SMTP Authentication Required: Yes
              •          Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
              •          Password: Your iCloud password
Also, you must upgrade your password to meet the new criteria:  8 characters, including upper and lower case and numbers.  If you have an older password that does not meet these criteria, when you try to setup mail on your mac, using all of the IMAP criteria listed above, it will still give a server error message.  Go to   http://appleid.apple.com         then follow directions to change your password, then go back to setting up your mail using the IMAP instructions above.

  • No DNS settings when using built-in (hardwired) ethernet

Iv'e never had an issue with wireless operation, but now that a wired connection is necessary, I've run into something strange.
When connecting to a LAN with a DHCP source providing IP, router, DNS settings and more, the ibook fails to populate the DNS settings. I've got a valid IP and gateway address but no DNS servers are defined. I can put them in manually, but that would require me to change them each time I connect to a different wired network instead of relying on DHCP to do it's job.
Has anybody else seen this issue?

If (as you say "is the case") this is a small, Netgear cable router...then the Netgear will be acting as DNS server. Likely the Netgear is getting a dynamic IP address from ISP, or it's been set with static values the ISP has told the homeowner to enter into the Netgear. Either way, DNS will be provided to Netgear, and the Netgear should be sending the DNS on down to the client computers.
(Do you "see" any DNS server info in the Configuration panel when you're on wireless? If so, what IP address is that DNS server?)
Why does it work wireless, but not cabled?
You really need to go into SystemPreferences>Network>Configure...and tell us what you have configured in the eth0, or built-in Ethernet section.
It might not be a bad idea to reboot the mac after you plug in ethernet...probably not needed, but we don't know enough about your network settings.
You also say you can't access sites by name. Can you hit a website using an IP address in the Safari addressBar?
