Changing user icon in OS X 10.8; "edit picture" button missing!?

Trying to change my user "avatar/icon/picture" displayed at the login screen.  Usually this is a straight forward process from SysPref --> Users & Groups --> click on the picture -> edit picture -> choose.
However I've either gone blind or the "edit picture" option is just missing from OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion which seems odd.  Anyone else have this issue or am I just crazy?

Drag and drop is intuitive from nothing. This is a change of an expected behavior to something very different from before. No first-time pop-up message for returning users, no backup "edit picture" button, nothing. That is poor design. Sure, now that I know about, it works great, but it should be made clear before the user gets to this point.
I agree fully about the new way to do this being really unintuitive. I bought an MBA 13 two weeks ago, which came with Lion installed. Setting it up was relatively straightforward, even though the old Macs in our house were running Leopard, so I had some learning to go through.
The MBA died after 10 days, before I had a chance to install Mountain Lion. I replaced it with a MBP 13 today. The Apple support information, OS X Mountain Lion: Add a user picture, still describes the procedure for Lion, makes no mention of this, and is useless. I just wasted an hour trying to figure this out, before stumbling on the answer in this thread (thank you, Fernando.S, for the answer).
At the moment, I am disgusted with Mountain Lion, which has thrown up one obstacle after another.
Just so you know, this is not the new way of doing it. It's always worked this way. And the method used, dragging and dropping, has been an essential part of the Mac OS since 1984.
It's probably not intuitive to some ex-windows users, because in 1984, they were still using menu commands in DOS. IMHO

  • Changing user icons for single users?

    Hello all! Ok quick question...I have an admin and 2 standard users set up and I want to change the dock icons on the 2 standard user accounts. How do I do this? I know how to change icons and have changed them before, but when I change the icons in one user account they change in the other account as well. I just want two accounts with two different sets of icons. Any help would be appreciated!!

    Sincerelyme2003 wrote:
    Sorry if that was confusing...I mean like the actual application icons. Like changing the finder or mail or dashboard icons.
    those are actually quite different. changing Mail icon in the dock is easy. changing Finder icon in the dock is not so easy unless you use 3rd party software like Candybar. what exactly did you do?
    But in any case all those icons are set once per computer which means that they will be the same on all accounts. there is no way around that. the only thing I can suggest if you want them different is to use aliases. make aliases to the applications you use Like Mail and put them somewhere in your home directory. apply any icons you want to the aliases. then put the aliases in the dock instead of actual applications. repeat with the other account using different icons.
    This will work for most icons but it won't work for Finder and Trash. as I said those icons are set differently and there is really no way to have different ones for different accounts.
    Like I said I know how to change them, but it seems to change them system wide. I changed the finder icon on my first account, then if I go into my second account and change the finder icon it also changes it in my first account. How do I get it to change it just for the account I am currently in? So I can have 2 standard accounts with completely different icon sets? Thanks again!

  • Can I change the icon for a safari link to a picture?

    I'm saving safari links, I'd like to use the picture of what the link is to as the icon as opposed to the default. Is this possible?

    Hi there
    Well, this is a yes and no answer.
    Yes, you could change an icon, But no, RoboHelp won't make it easy. What you will end up doing is massaging the JavaScript code for the WebHelp output. This particular change isn't really for the faint of heart. Oh, and you would likely have to change it each time you generate your WebHelp output.
    I would encourage you (and others) to consider submitting a Wish Form to ask Adobe to put this on their radar for a future version.

  • Gnome: changing application icon size

    Before gnome 3.10,according to wiki, to change app icon size it was necessary to edit "/usr/share/gnome-shell/theme/gnome-shell.css".
    From upgrading to 3.10 and now with 3.12,it seems it doesn't work anymore and so I have to keep large icons on my shell.
    has anyone experienced the same issue?

    If you downsize the panel, the icons will be downsized too..
    There is also the drawer applet, which can contain the icons...

  • How can I change a user icon position?

    How can I change the position that Yosemite determines for where a user icon is positioned on the login screen? I'm the admin and I added a standard user and the icon placement for that user is first, I'm second, and Guest User is third...it does not appear to be alphabetical. I'd like to switch the first two so my user icon is the first one on the left.

    Locate a folder icon you wish to use. Select it and press COMMAND-C to copy. Select the folder you want changed. Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. At the top left you will see that folder's icon. Click on it then press COMMAND-V to paste.
    If you want to create your own icons then you will need an application to do that. For example, Folder Icon Changer 3.0.7.
    Google searches will locste tons of pre-made folder icons you csn use. Some are free and some are not.

  • Why does my user icon keep changing?

    Hi all,
    It's not the end of the world but annoying just the same - I set my user icon to one of the standard Lion icons when I first set up my new MacBook Air and later changed it via System Preferences to a different photo that I've stored on my hard drive. Or at least, I thought I changed it.
    Lion keeps changing the user icon back to the default one that I set when I first set up my MB Air.
    Has anyone else run into this issue? And does anyone know of a solution for this?
    I can obviously live with this if I have to, but it sure it annoying!
    Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

    I messed about with this for an hour today - trying all the ways that were suggested in these and other forums to no avail. it kept switching back to my original photo or nothing at all the moment I saved. FINALLY - I figured it out. I duplicated and cropped a picture within iPhoto and named it with my own face. Then I DRAGGED it instead of CHOOSING it to the contact card - and voila! Finally it stuck!
    Such a trivial little thing but I was so tired of the "trial" photo I had posted when I first bought my computer. Good luck!

  • HT2493 Cannot get user icon changed

    For some reason whenever I send a text a stupid pink flower icon appears.  I've gone into System Preferences, Users and Groups and changed the icon and have also done it in my Contacts, yet the same flower icon still appears in every text message.  Can someone solve the mystery?

    Hi,
    Hummm.
    I just tried it on my Mountain Lion iMac.
    Went to System Preferences > User and Groups > My accounts and clicked in the Pic to change.
    Chose the pink daisy thing.
    The My card and Buddy list pics did not change.
    As to why...
    That is probably about the way I have got to where I am.
    During various version of iChat I have changed my Pic serveral times (possibly mnay times as in some Group chats I have changed it several times alone).
    It has been the sig pic since iChat 4 at least and has been either Updated to new OS version or the Account Migrated as it has been to the iMac.
    This means that com.apple.ichat.plist holds the current Pic and the path to Recent Pics and the associated .plist for that.
    See ~/Library/Images/iChat Recent Pictures
    It also seems that in Mountain Lion it also pulls the "Recent Lists" for the System Preferences Account pic as well as the Contacts > My Card one.
    See this pic and the Pink Daisy thing
    The Current pic always stays but the Recent Items lists the last choice wherever it was made.
    I would guess if there are no other Recents  set up by other means then the Current one will change.
    Having set mine individually there seems  to be no way to link them all again  (obviously I can make them all the same but they don't all change at one then).
    May be we should change it to "If you have made changes to the various Pics invidiually you may have to change them individually" ?

  • Upgrading to Leopard changed my user icon!!

    I have three accounts on my computer. An administrator account, an account for my roommate, and and account for me. I just upgraded to Leopard and it changed my icon from the fortune cookie to the lipstick one!
    Anyone else experienced this? How weird!!
    Other than that the upgrade went smoothly, even with my Logitech mouse!

    If you go this site in the lower left hand corner is a link to a tutorial on installing memory in a MacBook.

    The first thing you should do with a second-hand computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. How you do that depends on the model. Look it up on this page to see what version was originally installed.
    If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) installation disc, which you can get from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller — not from eBay or anything of the kind. If the machine has less than 1 GB of memory, you'll need to add more in order to install 10.6. I suggest you install as much memory as it can take, according to the technical specifications.
    If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the installation media that came with it: gray installation discs, or a USB flash drive for some MacBook Air models. If you don't have the media, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
    To boot from an optical disc or a flash drive, insert it, then reboot and hold down the C key at the startup chime. Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo on the screen.
    If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, you don't need media. It should boot into Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
    Once booted from the disc or in Internet Recovery, launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive — not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In the Partition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive, which is what you should do.
    After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. When the installation is done, the system will automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
    You should then run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. If you want to upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, buy it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the previous owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed — you have to repurchase them.
    If the previous owner "accepted" the bundled iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, and Garage Band) in the App Store so that he or she could update them, then they're linked to that Apple ID and you won't be able to download them without buying them. Reportedly, Apple customer service has sometimes issued redemption codes for these apps to second owners who asked.
    If the previous owner didn't deauthorize the computer in the iTunes Store under his Apple ID, you wont be able toauthorize it under your ID. In that case, contact iTunes Support.

  • Is there a way to change the icon associated with icloud account?

    Is there a way to change the icon associated with my iCloud account? It's currently a rose and i do not like it.

    Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
    Are you referring to your iCloud account picture or your user picture?
    It looks like you are referring to your user picture. To change it, open System Preferences > Users & Groups, press the picture box and choose the user picture you want from the ones that came by default. If you want to select a different picture stored on your Mac, drag that photo onto the picture box.
    If you want to change your iCloud account picture, open http://www.icloud.com and log in with your Apple ID. Then, press your name at the top right of the site and press the user picture. If you put the cursor on the picture box, you will see a button at the top of the box to change your picture

  • Change Dock Icons on OS 10.8.5

    Hi Mac Community!
    For all of us Mac lovers, the one thing we are fascinated with is the fact that Mac in notorious for giving the end user the power to personalize the computer's look and feel, as well as making commands extremely user friendly.
    This is not what I get from the last update to OS 10.8.5
    I want to change the icons on my dock, as I should being that I am the owner of a fairly expensive piece of equipment, but this seems impossible to do for the Finder icon. Is there any way this can be done without causing any problems in the system?
    Any ideas are appreciated! THANKS!

    You want to change the Finder icon or you want to remove the Finder icon from the dock. You weren't clear on that point

    Don't worry about getting a new BlackBerry ID.  If you registered it on your new device, everything associated with it will go to your new device.  Once you've registered it with your new device, BlackBerry Protect will see that you have two phones with the same BlackBerry ID and will ask which one(s) you want Protect to access.
    As for email accounts on your new phone, from your new device's browser type in www.blackberry.com/integrate and enter the user/pass combo you've been using on your old phone and now your new one.  Once you set up your email account(s) on your new device using that link, all emails will come to your new phone and your old one will be nothing more than a memory.
    I hope that helps you.

  • Cant change JLabel icon with setIcon a second time???

    Hey all,
    I have drawn 21 cards on my GUI - then as a user selects one of three columns via a radio button and subsequent Submit button, the deck reshuffles itself, and is THEN supposed to change all the labels to the new cards in their New order.
    All the code is good up until the point where it tries to reset the icon - and then I get a
    "AWT-EventQueue-0" java.lang.NullPointerException
    pointing to the line of my first Label that I am changing.
    I am trying to use the same settings as I did in the initial setting and think that maybe this could be my problem, but cannot find a proper setting in the Interface.
    My initial settings are this :
    for (i=0; i < 7; i++)
              cardscol1.setIcon(new ImageIcon("images\\" + deck.get(i)));
    cardscol2[i].setIcon(new ImageIcon("images\\" + deck.get(i + 7)));
    cardscol3[i].setIcon(new ImageIcon("images\\" + deck.get(i + 14)));
    THEN I tried this again (( INSIDE MY buttonHandler ))
    for (i=0; i < 7; i++)
                            j=0;
                            cardscol1.setIcon(new ImageIcon("images\\" + deck.get(j)));
    j++;
    cardscol2[i].setIcon(new ImageIcon("images\\" + deck.get(j)));
    j++;
    cardscol3[i].setIcon(new ImageIcon("images\\" + deck.get(j)));
    j++;
    And this is where I get the NULL POINTER EXCEPTION -- help??
    ****UPDATE:
    I cant access these Label PERIOD from within my Button Handler -- any idea why?

    OK -- the cardscol1 and 2 and 3 JLABEL arrays reference cards11, 12, 13, 14, etc. etc... THESE CARDS are within the initComponents class that is in a seperate class as well -- so that is probably my problem-- how do I get this submitButtonHandler class to see the cards that are in my initComponents class???
    AND THIS initComponents class is listed as PRIVATE!!! ((This is a class that the NetBeans GUI maker sets up -- very nice feature, but I cannot edit this class at all!))

  • Startup account user icon

    Where does the startup user icon come from? Under accounts you can choose cat/butterfly etc.
    Somehow mine has become a shadow of a person with white swooshes on a blue background. This picture is not in the list under account system preference. I like it, just don't know what made it go to this or where it is coming from.

    Hi John_C!
    I seem to remember, when I changed my User Picture, the default pic did disappear.
    I think I downloaded a new one, but can't recall exactly from where.
    I've got a copy here Default User Picture, for you, if you want it, but I'll only leave it up for a few hours.
    Go to that link, do a Save As, from the browser File menu.
    Then deposit the downloaded file into
    HD > Library > Users Pictures.
