Changing User Plist Permissions

I notice that by default user specific plists have perimissions of 600 though system wide plists have permissions of 644 or higher.
I'd like to enble group read to some of these user plists, however upon gui login/logout I notice that the OS reverts them back to 600.
Does anyone have any idea why? Seems strange. I've seen this behavior on both lion and snow leopard.

Hi Xeep,
Error -60002 is "The authorization parameter is invalid".
From your account, have you first tried changing the Owner to yu, then the Group to admin, then the owner back to her?
Or better yet, try BatChMod...

  • Changing user folder permissions

My wife and I both have admin accounts on my computer. I want to be able to easily transfer files from my user folder to hers without running into permissions problems. For example, I may want to take a photo from my Pictures folder and drop it in her Pictures folder. I can't do that because access is blocked to everyone but her. It's irritating to have to drop the file on a neutral ground, log in to her account, and take the file and put it in her folder. I logged in as root and tried to change the permissions by giving admin group read and write privileges but it gives an error of -60002 if I try that. I can't change the permissions while not logged in as root since the option is greyed out. Any ideas? I don't care one bit about "compromising security".

  • How to change default file permissions so others can write to file

We have 15 people sharing files on a network. If we open a file on the network, work on it, and save it, it is readable and writeable for everybody. But if we drag the file off the network, work on it on our own hard drive, and save it, and THEN drag it back to the network, it is read-only for everybody. Documents made on our own hard drives are, by default, read-only for others.
This is a real time waster for us!
This means that every time we make a document on our own hard drives, we have to remember to go to the extra trouble to change it's permissions before we put it on our network. Please, is there some way to change the default settings, so that if I, say, save a Word doc on my hard drive and then move it to the network, it is readable and writeable by everybody without me having to change it's permissions?

Sounds like you are not using ACLs.  When you double click your share point in Server.app, how many entries do you have in the Permissions window?  If you have only 3 then you are not using ACLs which explains why your permissions are not inheriting.  POSIX permissions, the base three of owner, group, and everyone, do not inherit.  You need to add at least one more permission entry to the table.  This is called an ACE (access control entry).  Together, you are building an ACL (access control list).  Try not to use users.  Always add groups if possible as it is easier to manage and never requires propagation of the permissions.

  • Change User Name But Not Email SBS 2003

    Greetings,
I need some help. I have a user that got married and wants to change her last name because she sends email from Outlook and it shows her old last name. I would like to change her user name but keep her email address the same.
On SBS 2003 from Server Management -> Users, if you rightClick a user and select "Rename" from the popup menu, you can change the first and last name and leave the email as is. The user name will change and the email address stays the same in
the user list when the edit window closes.
I would like to do this if there are no repercussions such as email folders disappearing or unaccesable or any other changes to anything other than the user name.
What will happen if i change the user name as I descirbed above. Will it mess up any of the users access. permissions, etc?
Thanks very much for your help!
    Lewis

    Hi Lewis:
If I understand what you mean, you would like this user to receive mails addressed to "old-name" and send mails with the reply address as "new-name".
To do this, open Active Directory Users and Computers, find the user, right click - properties, email addresses.
Add the new email address and set it as default.  Uncheck the box to update based on recipient policy.
You can also change the users name in the SBS console, but if you just change the email address there emails addressed to old-name will not be received.  So in the console, just change the users name for logon and user name to new-name, but not the
email address.  Just add one in ADUC.

  • Changing file access permissions?!

I have a MacBook Pro retina running os x mountain lion, if that helps any of you guys answer this question. I recently took a screenshot of an area of the screen using the command-shift-4 combination. When i was trying to open it, though, an  error came up saying that i didnt have the permission to open the file. It told me to got to get info and change file permissions.
How do I change file permissions and why does it say this in the first place??
    Thanks,
    RZ

Doing a screen shot creates a file on the users desktop which they should already have permission to use.
So if it's saying you don't means there is something else wrong with your machine.
    Do these to things first.
1: #6 Repair Users Permissions (this will fix the in user folder permissions)
2: #12 OnyX (free) cache cleaning and will repair OS X permissions.
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
What is basically going to happen is your going to reset the permissions of all files on the machine back to what they should be and not what something caused it to become off.
Doing all the OnyX steps in Maintainence and Cleaning is going to reset everything else in the system like caches etc., so it's like it just came from the factory which will cause those caches to rebuild anew and free of corruption that might have occured.
OnyX also has flags as it checks the drive for other issues, thus gives you a warning of other potential problems.
Make sure you have backups of your users files off the machine to a storage drive (not only TimeMachine) before you atempt any repairs as all the remaining software can be replaced except your files in case it turns out your problem is much larger than anticipated.

  • Changing Users Name - different from the other post below

I want to change my home name under the places folder. It's not my account name that can be viewed in the preferences under account. When I got this new MacBook Pro and went thru the set up, somehow I must have agreed to use the name that is next to the house icon under places in the finder sidebar. I really don't know where they got it from and when I search the whole computer all that comes up is the user folder. I tried to rename the name but it won't let me. There has to be somewhere I can change that name short of clearing out the contents of the MacBook and loading a new system from the supplied start up disk.

    Hi,
    Just to amplify -
An account actually has two names, the "long name" (now called "Full Name" in System Preferences), and the ""short name" (normally a single word in lower case, called "Account Name" in System Preferences when you first set up an account).
When you set up a user account and enter your "Full Name," the system will suggest an Account Name (the "short name"), and you have *just this one chance* to change it:
Once set, the short name becomes the name of your home folder (the house icon in Finder) and is not easily changed. You can't just change the home folder name, because the short name is also an intrinsic part of your user account. However if you very much want to change the short name, there are a few ways to do this. Apple's method is here:
*Mac OS X: How to change user short name or home directory name*
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1428?viewlocale=en_US
It's somewhat complicated as you will see, and changing the short name this way can sometimes introduce a few permissions glitches. You could still try it, or since your Mac is still new, you might instead consider wiping the HD and starting over.

  • User Level permissions (ACLs) - HOW?

    Dear Expert,
One more victim of Mackeeper writing to you seeking help...
I tried my best to remove it from the comp and I have succeded.
However, I am stuck at 2 points:
    1) How User Level permissions (ACLs)? Please guide....
    2) Mackeeper keeps opening pages in safari on its own, whenever I open a new tab. Please GUIDE.
    Please help.....
Look forward to receiving valuable inputs.

There is no need to download anything to solve this problem.
You may have installed the "Downlite" or "VSearch" ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it. It's been reported that some variants of the malware block access to the page. If that happens, start in safe mode by holding down the shift key at the startup chime, then try again.
Back up all data before making any changes.
One of the steps in the article is to remove malicious Safari extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those. If Safari crashes on launch, skip that step and come back to it after you've done everything else.
If you don't find any of the files or extensions listed, or if removing them doesn't stop the ad injection, then you may have an adware variant not covered by the support article. Ask for instructions in that case.
The problem may have started when you downloaded and ran an application called "MPlayerX." That's the name of a legitimate free movie player, but the name is also used fraudulently to distribute VSearch. If there is an item with that name in the Applications folder, delete it, and if you wish, replace it with the genuine article from mplayerx.org.
This malware is often found on illegal websites that traffic in pirated content such as movies. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow. Never install any software that you downloaded from a bittorrent, or that was downloaded by someone else from an unknown source.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere  should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates
    if it's not already checked.

As you just found out the hard way, it's always a good idea to have a backup, especially before you start messing with system files. Don't feel too bad, everyone seems to learn the hard way. You can try this, though if it were me I'd back up what I had first just in case.

  • Changing user login in single user mode?

Hi my computer (server10.3) is no longer booting up (stops at the blue screen just before the login).
only 2 things have changed since last time restarted
    1) changed user login in in the prefs to automatic as my name
    2) installed a security update
I am wondering - if I can get into single user mode - whether i can change or force the login details
    thanks

    Hi John,
You can get into single user mode by depressing <Command>-s after the chime and holding it until you're in single user mode. Once you get there, I recommend that you run the following:
    /sbin/mount -uw /
    /usr/sbin/diskutil repairPermissions /
Repairing permissions is the classic first thing to do when you have problems after an update. After that, if we can help it will depend on your posting the error messages that are printed to screen before the login. If they get scrolled off the screen, you should be able to get them again with the command "dmesg".

  • Freezing when changing users

I've been having a problem recently where when I try to change users, the login screen freezes up. Goes to spinning beach ball and won't do anything. Any ideas?

Is your signature out of date or have you been updating your Mac regularly as OS X and security updates have become available? Have you updated both the Firmware and the SMC firmware? If you have forced any shutdowns have you booted from the Install DVD and used Disk Utility in the Utilities menu to repair your hard drive? Have you used Disk Utility in Apps/Utilities to repair permissions on your boot volume at the least after installing new software or new software updates?

  • Give a user read permissions to folder but deny him/her copying contents? Is it possible?

    Hi,
Is there a way to give a user read permissions to a folder but deny him/her copy permissions? I have been searching for way to do this in windows server 2012 R2 without any luck. I have a folder that i would like a user to see the contents but not change
or copy it. Any one who know the tricks?
    Thanks,
    Jama.

    Yes,
Give the user read permissions to a folder, then he only read, but not write. Additionally, you can set Deny Write, to overwrite any inherited permissions.

The first thing you should do with a second-hand computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. How you do that depends on the model. Look it up on this page to see what version was originally installed.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) installation disc, which you can get from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller — not from eBay or anything of the kind. If the machine has less than 1 GB of memory, you'll need to add more in order to install 10.6. I suggest you install as much memory as it can take, according to the technical specifications.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the installation media that came with it: gray installation discs, or a USB flash drive for some MacBook Air models. If you don't have the media, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
To boot from an optical disc or a flash drive, insert it, then reboot and hold down the C key at the startup chime. Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo on the screen.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, you don't need media. It should boot into Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
Once booted from the disc or in Internet Recovery, launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive — not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In the Partition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive, which is what you should do.
After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. When the installation is done, the system will automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
You should then run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. If you want to upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, buy it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the previous owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed — you have to repurchase them.
If the previous owner "accepted" the bundled iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, and Garage Band) in the App Store so that he or she could update them, then they're linked to that Apple ID and you won't be able to download them without buying them. Reportedly, Apple customer service has sometimes issued redemption codes for these apps to second owners who asked.
If the previous owner didn't deauthorize the computer in the iTunes Store under his Apple ID, you wont be able toauthorize it under your ID. In that case, contact iTunes Support.
