Changing Volume Levels

1.) When raising or lowering the volume of an audio file, is there a way to know what -21 db is? Is this a fixed form of measurement, or is it based on the audio levels of the original file?
2.) Is there a way to visually see when noise is being introduced when the "Level" is raised in the Viewer?
3.) When wanting to raise volume, when is it better to raise the Levels, vs. Copying and pasting the track to increase the volume? Which situations work best for what?
Thanks!!!

1.) Are you asking about output level or gain level? By default, all FW captured audio comes into FCP with a gain level of 0db, regardless of it's output level. Gain level (the amount of adjustment from the default setting) can be seen in the Viewer window. Output level can be seen on the meters.
2.) Not unless you're really, really good a reading waveforms.
3.) Both methods achieve the same thing; raising the output level (volume). Of course, both methods also raise the noise floor. Duplicating the clip on the Timeline is much like assigning an analog mixer's channel to an additional bus.
You can also use the Dynamic Processor filter to raise the level beyond FCP's +12db gain limit.

  • Changing volume level

I have a timeline with several speech segments in audio track 1.
I want to increase the volume level of each segment by +6dB.
When I select more than one segment at a time, the volume control disappear from the effects control panel.
Is there a way to increase the volume of all segments at a time?

Open the Audio Mixer and increase the level of the Master fader by 6 dB.
(Or the level of the Track 1 fader if you have more than one audio track)

  • Changing volume levels in a video

I've made a three minute commercial as part of a school project, but I'm having trouble adjusting the audio as I want it. I have set background music, and have managed it fine throughout the video until the end. I have a cutscene of credits, during which I would like for the music to be turned down automatically so that I can talk during the credits. following that, I have another scene of actual footage where I would like it turned back up again. And then, one final scene where I want to cut the music off entirely. How do I go about doing this?

If you had iMovie 11, you can adjust the music up and down like this quite easily by dragging the waveform up and down.
In iMovie 09, If I were doing what you are doing, I would drag the music track in as they do those sound effects tracks in the Tutorial. Drag it in twice, and each time, drop it on the first frame of your project.. It will show up as two bars under the video clips. You can drag the right edge of the top bar to the left to shorten it so that it finishes playing before your credits roll. For the second bar, drag the left edge to the right, so that it starts right after the credits. That should do it.

  • Is there any "mechanical" helper to get my volume levels the same?

I create playlists from ratings,(and comments),- and albums have different volume levels. As I always use my ipod to go to sleep, it is very destructive, to not be able to hear my music one minute, and then have it much too loud the next.
Is there ANYTHING, free or chargeable, physical or software, that can help me get my itunes library to all the same volume level. My problem is agrivated by the fact that I do have some shared downloads, and also someone put my vynils onto cd for me, but at a lower volume.
I might add, that I'm still a learner on the computer. I have been told to change the soundcheck -playback -preferences -itunes. I have tried it, ticked and unticked - it doesn't make any difference.
I'd be very gratefull for some advice. Please HELP, this has been going on for ages. Thank you, in anticipation.

I'm SO very grateful for your help! Have downloaded it, and have started to use it, but havn't listened to results yet.(just about to) THANKYOU SO MUCH.
Thankyou so much again, this could be the end of a long (negative) era!
A bit later: have listened to a little, seems a huge amount better. will update when used properley.
I'm anticipating some being way out. Though it says it can overcome old changed volume levels, is it best in your opinion, to put them back to original setting?

  • When I set all the tracks in the latest Garageband to the same volume levels and save, when I open the file again they've changed back to a previous setting?

I'm trying to mix a recording in the latest 2014 version of Garageband, but when I set all the tracks in the latest Garageband to the same volume levels and save, when I open the file again they've changed back to a previous setting? Does anyone know why it changes even after saving the file?
    Below is my iMac settings.

Do you have a back up?
If not you're into using file recovery software like  File Salvage - you can download a free trial and it will scan the disk for you and tell you with might be recoverable. Actual recovery will require that you purchase the app. There may be many files with the same or similar names. Always recover the largest file size.
There are other such apps. Search on Macupdate or the App Store

  • Macbook Pro 15" volume level changes by itself

    Hi all!
About a month ago I have upgraded my rock-solid Macbook Pro 15" (mid 2012) from Mountain Lion to Mavericks. All seemed fine (with the exception of some known annoyances with WIFI) until last week when all of a sudden the volume level started to change by itself. It started going up and down, turning mute and turning on again and so on, just like an invisible hand or a remote access have taken control of my machine (it wouldn't even let me change the the volume using the volume buttons while this weirdness is happening). This has never happened before. To make things worse, I have then upgraded to Yosemite and all seemed fine but then the weird volume changes appeared again and I now am stuck with no straight forward way of reverting all the way back to the original Lion (which worked perfectly since Mac purchase back in 2012).
    Can anyone help?
I have googled for similar issues and have seen  some answers (mostly not that relevant) including a thread on this forum suggesting to reset the SMC. I have tried that using the suggested key-combination press, but it did not seam to have solved the problem, as the volime changes continue when I least expect it.
Is this a hardware problem? If so, would a change of the keyboard resolve things?   [ At some stage I thought maybe the problem was caused by the fact the I have fiddled a little bit with the keyboard by lifting the :; key (next to L and under P) and applying a bit of WD40 to clean a tiny spil of sugary liqid that caused the key to get sticky.  But the volume keys are way far on top of keybord so my assumtion was/is that the volume changes would not be related to the cleaning. ]
is this a software problem? Some thread on similar (not identical) issues had suggested there are some bugs in soft and Apple is aware. For this reason I gave Yosemite a go but the problem continues. Would reverting to Lion sole the problem you think?  [ Maybe I should ask here if anyone can suggest how to go about this downgrade as Option-Cmd-R key-combination press at start up does not give me the Interner Recovery scree anymore, but keeps taking me (just like Cmd-R) straight to the OSX Utilities where can wipe of the disk (which I did) and reinstall Yosemite only. ]
I would very much apreciate any replies that might help me solve this issue.
    Many thanks
    Ty

  • My mac volume level won't change after sleep

My "Line Out" (2.1 Speaker System) does not seem to accept volume changing commands either by the Apple Wireless Keyboard, or System Preferences > Sound. This happens all the time after I put the computer to sleep. Before when I switched to Internal Speakers then back it would "unlock" and let me adjust the volume, but that is no longer the case (I should point out that the volume controls are not disabled, it's just that changing the level does not do anything). I can however adjust and use Internal Speakers just fine. This forces me to restart my computer in order to adjust the volume again.

Resetting the SMC and PRAM did not solve my problem, however this did manage to solve my problem across reboots and sleep:
    1. Command + Space / Open Spotlight.
    2. Search for "Audio MIDI Setup".
    3. Select your sound system.
    4. Change the format to something else, then change it back.
At this point it should fix the volume level and allow you to change it. I have only done this once, and it has worked since I made this topic.
Let me know if it helps.

  • Can not change the input volume level of a track

I mean the buton for the volume in the track information window, between "Input" (Mono/Stereo) and "Monitor"
It is on the lowest level and not highlighted, so I can't move it.
On my iBook I got an older version of GarageBand 2, there I can change the input volume, but I want to use the iMac because I use an external Microphone.
I don't think its got something to do with the mic, I've tried different settings, with the line in, and the internal mic, but this input volume level bar ist never highlighted.
    What's wrong?

I have G60-535DX model and recently I came across a strange problem. Sound of my laptop speaker works fine for 5 seconds and then stops. When I change the volum level either from task bar volume icon or through keyboard shortcut it starts playing again for next 5 seconds. Please note that it has no issue with headphones.
I have used windows troubleshooting wizard, checked in device manager, drivers are up-to-date. Could you please post the solution for it?

Please reply with solution as its very annoying issue

  • How can you change the volume level????

    Hi all:
I don't know if this is possible but sometimes I want to reduce or increase the volume level of several clips (10 or 20) by the same amount while they are linne up in the timeline, they are individual clips arranged back to back during the edit.  I want to either up the volume by 10db or down 10db from baseline 0db.
Do I have to do it induvidually or is ther a way to select them and apply the change to all of them at one time.????
    Your input is appreciated
    Thanks,
    AppleLou

And to go a step further, put them all into a Compound Clip, and you can apply a single filter to them all at once, plus keyframe your audio over time to them all at once.

    Hi Camelot,
How would you assess the effect on "overhead"?
This may have nothing to do with it, but I was curious as to the effect on speed of the script, so I ran the two scripts below. On my old souped-up 7500 (900MHz), the first script, with the "say" command outside the tell block, yielded an average of 111.7 ticks; the average for the second script was 110.1 ticks. So the difference appears to be about 1/30th of a second, insignificant for a one-time event (but maybe not if the routine is repeated numerous times).
(By way of comparison, my 2.7 GHz machine averaged about 80 ticks on both scripts. That's about half a second faster, and is noticeable.)
    Script 1
    set t1_ to the ticks
    repeat 20 times
    tell application "Finder"
    open file "MAC HD:Users:osimp:Desktop:SEM Hazards.rtf:"
    open folder "MAC HD:Users:osimp:Desktop:herd:"
    end tell
    say "Now close!" using "Fred"
    tell application "Finder"
    close folder "MAC HD:Users:osimp:Desktop:herd:"
close window 1 of application "TextEdit"
    end tell
    end repeat
    set t2_ to the ticks
    set AvgScriptDuration to (t2_ - t1_) / 20 & " ticks" as text
    Script 2
    set t1_ to the ticks
    repeat 20 times
    tell application "Finder"
    open file "MAC HD:Users:osimp:Desktop:SEM Hazards.rtf:"
    open folder "MAC HD:Users:osimp:Desktop:herd:"
    say "Now close!" using "Fred"
    close folder "MAC HD:Users:osimp:Desktop:herd:"
close window 1 of application "TextEdit"
    end tell
    end repeat
    set t2_ to the ticks
    set AverageScriptDuration to (t2_ - t1_) / 20 & " ticks" as text
(Finally, deviations from the mean ran as high as 4 ticks on the slow machine, and occassionally as high as 2 ticks on the faster machine -- for what that's worth!)

  • Volume level ZEN NANO PLUS, can it be chang

I have a new ZEN NANO PLUS that I have bought in Spain.
I?ve had this model before and I know that, because of the EU ruling ( **bleep** those bureaucrats! ), the volume level is not as loud as the model you can buy in the US.
A few people have suggested flashing the firmware and installing the US firmware, has anyone tried this, and did they have any success?
I downloaded the US firmware and tried to install it on my player but no luck, and the player died aswell, but I?m not sure if I did the correct thing...
If anyone knows anything about this any info would be greatly received.
    Thanks in advance
    Neil

You shouldn't have problem using both player together in MediaSource even in transferring audio files(non-protected content). Are you referring to being able to playback PlayForSure subscription content? I doubt it is possible(personal opinion) for the player since I believe it's more to do with the hardware rather than software.

  • Can i change the volume level for just a part of a track?

i am trying to raise the volume level for just a little section of a track without raising the volume for the whole track, just a one little section. can i do that on garage band? how would it do that?

    Yes you can
On the track instrument selector, there is a row of small buttons, one being an upside down triangle. Click the triangle to display Automation. The default controller is Track Volume. You will see a bright green line which is the volume level throughout the track..
Simply, go to the location where you want to reduce the volume, click on the green line to insert a control point. The first click is used the maintain the current volume. Go to the point where you want the volume to be reduce to, and click-and-hold the line and drag the new control point to the target volume.
NOTE: Use the Shift key to adjust incremental amounts.
    Have fun!!
