Changing volume's Ownership selection ?

I have an external FW hard drive that I've partitioned. I use one partition for a duplicate/clone of my Mac to boot from in emergencies and the other for daily backups.
I understand that a boot volume must not have "Ignore Ownership" selected.
My question is: can I change that selection back and forth and still have a bootable volume?
I'm almost 100% sure the partiton was set to not Ignore Ownership. However, during and overnight duplicating to that volume, it was reported in the log that the volume did have Ignore Ownership selected. So...can I just change it so Ignore Ownership is not selected and all will be well for a bootable volume? Or do I need to erase the volume and clone again with Ignore Ownership not selected? I'm trying to understand whether the permissions are always there and just made active or inactive or if the Ignore Ownership actually changes permanently the permissions on that volume.

I too would like to make a back-up to a 600GB external (with the ignore ownership unchecked) then use the disc for other purposes.
I followed your link to the article but, though saying ignore ownership should be unchecked for a back-up volume, it didn't cover the scenario of making a bootable back-up with the ownership unchecked. Re-checking, using the disc for other work, then unchecking again to use as a boot disk.
Does the actual unchecking/checking of the ignore ownership box actually change/corrupt already archived volumes or is it just a temporary override?

Multitouch gesture in Logic that changes volume of the selected track

Hi everyone !
Has anyone noticed that there was a new multitouch gesture introduced in the latest versions of Logic ? (I mean except from the Pinch In/Out Zoom function)
You can know move a fader with a multitouch gesture but it almost seems to be a bug since it's really hard to do. You have to put one finger at the top of the trackpad that will not move and another one that will be moving up and down. Try this several times, you'll see that it works quite often.
But the problem is that this gesture modifies all my mixes ! When I'm working, I use the Zoom function a lot and the volume gesture modifies my mixes by accident !
Has anyone else noticed this gesture ?
How could I deactivate it ?

Use the range selection tool and select the portion of the clip you want to change the volume on. Drag the volume line down and FCP will create keyframes which you can adjust as you want to get a fade shape.

Launching xcode from nfs share (Ensure that Xcode.app is installed on a volume with ownership enabled)

We have mac mini (Yosemite) and NFS server under Ubnuntu 14.04.
Also we have xcode resides on NFS share that mounted to mac.
Problem: When I try launch xcode from nfs share I got error message:
NSLocalizedRecoverySuggestion=Ensure that Xcode.app is installed on a volume with ownership enabled

Can't boot into OS X.6 after changing permissions and ownership

Hi,
I'm in the process of migrating to OS X.7 - booted into Lion I changed permissions and ownership on the other disk that I use to startup into OS X.6. I set it to "ignore ownership on this disk" and granted read and write access to "everybody". Restarting my Mac into OS X.6 now doesn't work anymore - the grey spinning circle spins forever.
Does anybody know how to fix this so that I can boot back into OS X.6? I'd be real thankful...

Thank you for your reply. I was able to repair permissions on the failing disk using the OS X.7 Lion recovery volume - quite amazing that one can do that.
However the internal disk of the iMac that has OS X.6 on it still fails to boot.
Any other suggestions? I'm a bit desperate to use OS X.6 because a few apps that are vital to me do not run under OS X.7 (they need Rosetta).

How do you change volume permissions with Solaris Volume Manager?

I'm trying to set up Solaris 9 to run Oracle on raw partitions. I have my design nailed down and I have built all the raw partitions I need as soft partitions on top of RAID 1 volumes. All this is built using Solaris Volume Manager (SVM).
However, all the partitions are still owned by root. Before I can create my Oracle database, I need to change the owner of the Oracle partitions to oracle:oinstall. The only reference I found telling me how to do this was in a Sun Blueprint and it essentially said "You can't change volume permissions directly or permanently using SVM and chown will only remain effective until the next reboot. To make the changes permanent, you must modify /etc/minor_perm". Unfortunately, I can't find an example of how to do this anywhere and the online man pages are not particularly helpful (at least not to me).
I'd appreciate a quick pointer, either to a good online resource or, even better, a simple example. For background, the volumes Oracle needs to own are:
/dev/md/rdsk/d101-109
/dev/md/rdsk/d201-203
/dev/md/rdsk/d301-303
/dev/md/rdsk/d401-403
/dev/md/rdsk/d501-505
I provide this information because I'd like to assign some, but not all, of the devices under /dev/md/rdsk to the oracle user and I was hoping some smart person out there could illustrate an approach using simle regular expressions, at which I'm horribly poor.

Ron, I feel your pain. I just came from an HTC also and a lot of stuff with this iPhone is bugging the crap out of me. Who makes a phone where you can't adjust the ringer and alert volumes independently? Instead, I have to adjust the alert volume when it is active. C'mon guys. Get with the program. You won a bunch of Android users over with the 4S, but you're going to chase us all back when we're done with our contract. Frustrating.

FIRST, THE REPAIR PERMISSIONS SOLUTION:
Use Disk Utilities on the "Sofware Install and Restore" DVD that came with your computer to set the permissions back to the defaults. Not the MacOSX Installation Disk. (This worked in MacOS 10.3.9)
MY SCREW UP
In my Hard Drive's "Get Info" dialog I switched the permissions of the Owner to my username and all others to no access. I had not yet closed the dialog and decided that it was probably dangerous so I started changing them back. I first changed the owner back to system. It asked for authentication.
After entering my password I assumed that I would be able to go back and change the others as well. Nope! The dialog disappeared, my desktop disappeared and I couldn't do anything. I was locked out.
After ten minutes of the beachball I restarted to the "Panther Installation disk" and tried repairing permissioins using disk utility. Evertime it "lost contact" with the system and would not work. Restarting (without CD) took me to a root user login (black sreen). My username and password did nothing.
THE SOLUTION
I then restarted to the "Software Install and Restore" DVD that came with my computer and used its Disk Utility to repair permissions. IT WORKED! It set permissions back to the default. THANK GOD.
NOTE: I wonder, will using the Install and Restore DVD to repair permissions reset any computer's files to the defaults? Is that a backdoor into someones currently restricted files and folders? (Assuming that you have physical access and the computer specific DVD)

Using the Repair Permissions function will not change the permissions on an account's home folder or anything in it, but there are at least two other ways in which someone with a Mac OS X 10.4 installation disk can get access to an account's files or folders unless some or all of those files are encrypted.

Great question. The line access fees for the account are a set amount and can not be changed unless you are going from a basic to a smartphone or vice versa. If you are wondering about adding the month to month discount if you are out of contract Ann154 has provided great information on how to access and add the feature.

You don't need iChat.
It should not be on there at all.
If the iCon in the DOCK looks like this then it is linked to iChat 4.
You should be able to Right/Control click that and get it to "Show in Finder"

Change from Parameter to Select-options.

Requirement is to change the existing program.
One of my requirement is to change parameter(P_VKORG) to Select-options(S_VKORG).
I mean earlier we have only one Slaes Organization, now we have got to use multiple Sales organizations. For this requirement I have used select-options insted of Parmeters.
But the code has:
a)PERFORMS using Parameters( P_VKORG). This inturn is used in the select statement of the FORM-ENDFORM.
b)READ statement also has P_VKORG in where condition.
How should these be replaced with Select-options(S_VKORG)?
What would be the effect if I directly replace them with S_VKORG.

you cannot just directly replace with S_VKORG.
select option is a structure with 4 fields, sign, option, low and high, hence it has to be dealt accordingly.
a. performs has to be changed to 'tables S_VKORG'
eg. perform get_data tables s_vkorg.
b. read statement has to be modified to deal with multiple values. best option will be to select for data in s_vkorg, and save in an internal table.
for eg, if select option was for vkorg,
select vkorg from tvko into t_tvko where vkorg in s_vkorg.
now t_tvko has list of possible vkorgs - regardless of we had a range or ne or gt or CP or whatever we had in select option.
now modify the read table to do for entries in T_TVKO.
c. in the select statement which is used in forms, wherever you see ' = P_vkorg' , replace with IN S_VKORG.

its ok, found the answer.
simply place an id in the option tag and refer to the innerText.
ie
<select name="companyMenu" size="1" onchange=whatever(this.form);>
<option id="commonText" value="">Want to change this text</option>
and for the function
function whatever(f) {
commonText.innerText = "happy";
which replaces "Want to change this text" with "happy"

BPC NW 10.0 - Data Manager Prompt changing from SELECTINPUT to SELECT cleared values

Dear BPC Experts,
We recently went from SP13 patch 4 to SP19 patch 1. When we made changes in the PROMPT values in the Data Manager Organize>Package>Modify Script>PROMPT, we experienced different behavior switching from SELECTINPUT to SELECT in our development system than we did in our production environment. In development, when we changed the value from SELECTINPUT to SELECT, the values entered for Variable name such as %SELECTION% in Property1 and "Select the members to CLEAR" in Property2, and %DIMS% remained. However, when we changed from SELECTINPUT to SELECT in production system, the values for Variable Names and Properties were cleared out. Does anyone know why in our developmet system values were kept but not in our production system during this type of activity? I would like to understand the two different behaviors and what controlled it. We prefer not to have the values for Properties clear.

Excellent point, I should have included images as that likely would have shown this odd behavior.
When I made the changes in our development system to a package to switch from SELECTINPUT to SELECT the values outlined in the image below were retained for Varialbe Name, Property 2, and Property 3 after we applied the SP19 patch 1.
When I made the same change in our system to a package in our production system after we applied the SP19 patch 1, the values for Varialbe Name, Property 2, and Property 3 were cleared per the image below. The odd thing is that initially it looked like the values stayed. It was only after you saved and went back in did you see that the values were gone.
Any help in understanding this behavior change would be greatly appreciated.
