Changing where photos are stored?

Hello,
I would like to be able to use iPhoto 6 with my photos held on a samba share, mounted as a local folder.
I can tell iPhoto not to copy my photos to the iPhoto folder, however if I rotate or auto adjust images, then it puts them in the Modified folder under my iPhoto library. I'd really want them to overwrite the original on my samba share.
Is there any flexibility over the organisation of my photos?
With iTunes I can set the iTunes library folder to where my samba share is mounted and this works really well.
Thanks,
Jon

iPhoto preserves the original file at all times, in keeping with the best principles of Digital Asset Management. This is a feature of iPhoto and cannot be turned off. If you don't want this feature then, simply, use another application.

You might want to consider this very carefully. I've yet to see a good reason to operate a library like this unless you're using two photo organisers. Importing an deleting become multi-step operations, but mor eimportantly, migrating to a new HD or computer can be much more complex. You can run your entire library from an external disk.
Is there any flexibility over the organisation of my photos?
iPhoto offers tremendous flexibility in the organisation of your photos - Events, Albums, Smart Albums, Keywords, Slideshows, Books Calendars etc.
However, all your questions are about File organisation. iPhoto is a Photo organiser.

  • Changing where iPhotos are stored

I want to change where iPhotos are stored. My computer HD is getting full. How can I change to an external HD?

1 - make sure the EHD is formatted OS X Extended (journaled) with ownership set to be ignored:
2 - drag your iPhoto Library package from the Pictures folder on your iMac to the EHD.
3 - when the copying is done launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and in the next window select the library on the EHD.
4 - once you've confirmed that the EHD library is working properly and has all your photos you can delete the library from your Pictures folder.

  • Change where TAGS are stored

My hard drive crashed and when I recovered, I had lost all the tags on my photos, evidently because they are stored in the Program Files instead of as personal data & vista backups don't capture/restore them.
Trying to learn from this, how can I change the default location where the tags are stored so this doesn't happen again? Thanks for any help --
    Sharon

The tags are not stored in the Program files.Your tags are stored in the catalog file which is a .psa file. If you have backed up this file , on restoration the tags should be there.Do let us know if this helps.

  • Aperture File Transfer?  Where photos are stored?

Hi, I have some questions that I simply cannot find the answers to.  I have Aperture 3 with roughly 7,557 photos on it.  Now, they are stored on the harddrive under "Aperture Library" however, they are separated by folders with numbers on it?  I have all my photos labeled in folders such as "Bermuda Trip" and so on.  So in all I have like 45 folders in Aperture with the title the photos are in.  Now they are not saved like this on the harddrive and I have no clue how the computer stores these files.  I actually want to transfer all the photos to another photo manager application and have zero clue on how to do it.  I decent with Macs and know quite a few things about them since 2005 but I cannot figure out for the life of me how to get all my photos together and set for transfer to another computer and photo application.  Please help!  THANKS!

When you run the command a window will open where you can set the destination of the files.
You may want to test writing directly to the network by exporting a few originals and making sure they wind up where you want them.
If you have problems going right to the network do it in two steps, output to a local drive and then copy to the network.

  • Can I change where files are stored

Is it possible to change from storing files in the Aperture library to storing them in a referenced library?
    Thanks
    Kent

Yes.  Just select the Images whose Masters you want to convert from Managed to Referenced and run "File→Relocate Masters".  You specify a storage location in the dialog that comes up.
    (Added)
There are import settings for making your Masters Referenced on import.

Thank you for your reply.  I have been backing up my entire computer and when I follow anything having to do with Lightroom I am not finding actual photos.  I hope to find the photos that have been backed up along with updates to them that my wife has been performing during her edits.  Found Lightroom 2 catalog Previews/Lrdata.  Could that be it?

  • When I take a screenshot (command, shift, 4), I get an error: "you don't have permission to save files in the location where screenshots are stored". Help!

I used to be able to take screenshots just fine.
Now, when I try to take a screenshot (using command + shift + 4) I get an error stating that my screenshot cannot be saved, because I do not have permission to save where they are stored. HELP!

If not running Lion, please do this:
With the Finder active, press the following key combinations, in this order:
    Shift-Command-H
    Command-3
    Command-I
The Info window for your home folder will open. Click the lock icon to authenticate. In the Sharing & Permissions section, you should have read & write access. If not, make it so. Regardless of whether you made any changes, select "Apply to enclosed items" from the action (gear icon) menu.
    If running Lion, do this:
Boot from your recovery partition by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the recovery desktop appears, select Utilities > Terminal from the menu bar.
In the Terminal window, enter “resetpassword” (without the quotes) and press return. A “Reset Password” window opens.
Select your boot volume if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled “Select the user account” if not already selected.
Under “Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs”, click the “Reset” button.
Select Apple menu > Restart from the menu bar.

When I receive appointments by email and accept them they go into the enourage "on my mac" ical calendar which is not synced with mobileme.  How do I change where appointments are put ?
Or how can I choose where the appointment is put ?
I use the mobileme sync services so the ical calendars that are synced are those in the "[email protected]" group.
    Please help !
    Nick

Actually you can't drag the appointment to ano calendar - its says "You can’t make changes to this invitation., Only the organiser can change this event"
Also if you double click on the received appointment and open the window the only calendars shown that you can select are the 'on my mac" ones, and not the sync'd ones.
    Any ideas welcome !!

    Dear Sir/Madam
I want to tell you that I am very disappointed because I just read that in photo stream my photos are stored only for (30) thirty days.I didn't know that and I didn't have the time to save them on a device.
I was robbed of mobile before (3) three days and I lost 2.000 photos!
Is there any possibility to retrieve them?
If it was possible that would be great as I would save them immediately to my computer instead of losing them again.
    Thank you for understanding

It's important to keep in mind that the picture files are NOT stored in the Organizer. They are not stored in Lightroom or Bridge either...
The organizer is based on a catalog which stores the pictures properties, mainly the location of the pictures on your drive(s). It's the same idea of catalogs in Lightroom, and the nice thing is that Lightroom can convert organizer catalogs to its own format. The most obvious way for you will be to use Lightroom.
Bridge is a file browser which is a different way than to use catalogs.

  • How can I see what photos are stored on iCloud?

How can I see what photos are stored on iCloud? I haven't used Photo Stream before so there are no photos on there that I can see.
    Help needed ASAP.
    Thanks

If you haven't used Photostream there won't be any photos "actually on iCloud".
Any photos stored as part of an iOS device backup can be viewed on the iOS device after restoring the backup to the iOS device. They can't be viewed online.

    Good day AMELIASARAH,
One resolution to your issue would be to update your iPhone using iTunes on your computer rather than over the air. This requires much less space on the iPhone as most of the work is done by the computer. See this article for how to do it -
If you need more space for an iOS update - Apple Support
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

  • Photos are stored on external disk

Hi there! A number of my photos are stored on an external disk; is there a way to transfer/incorporate these photos into my library to avoid carrying the external drive around whenever using iPhoto? Thanks

Do you have a default "managed" library (the iPhoto preference to "copy imported items to the iPhoto library is in its checked state) or a (The iPhoto advanced preference to "copy imported items to the iPhoto library" has been unchecked) which is strongly NOT recommended.
If you have a default managed library then simply import the photos into iphoto and they are thee - the source is not needed
If you have a referenced Library then you can use iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -  to rebuild it as a managed library (projects, slideshows and other items that are not sharable will not be in the new library)
