Changing writting speed?

Hi All,
We have recently burned an Imovie project to idvd and for some reason it skips randomly on different dvd players. We changed to setting to best quality (instead of performance) but although it seemed a little better it still skipped. I just went out and bought some Apple DVD-R's as I read that might help. But before I burn I was hoping someone could tell me if there is a way to change the burn speed to a slower setting. I thought that might help. Thanks in advance for your help.
Thanks,
David

• Need To Change Write Speed in DVDSP

I have a buttload of blank DVD-Rs that will write only at 4X or below on my system. When I use any app that lets me change the speed to 4X or lower, they work fine. However, DVDSP always blows up when it gets to the write, and I am not smart enough to know how to throttle the write speed down. Any help would be appreciated.

If you save as a disk image from DVDSP, Toast should recognize that image and write accordingly. I'm not sure you need to do that "conversion" step you mention.
Quality is unaffected as none of your video compression is changed. The bits that make up your project are exactly the same.

• How do you change the dvd write speed in pre 11

can i change the dvd write speed i pre 11 and if so how   thanks

Not in Premiere Elements.
You'll need to use Premiere Elements to burn the DVD files to a folder, and then use a program like the excellent, free ImgBurn to burn the VIDEO_TS folder to a disc at a slower speed.

• I Can't seem to change the write speed when building a BluRay disc in encore

I burned a Bluray project on disc and the video freezes after about a minute on each chapter, someone reccomended changing the BD-R disc brand and burn with a slower write speed (2x or 4x) But when I'm in the build panel, the destination section where the write speed section is blank and appears greyed out, so I can't change it. Can somebody guide me in how to fix this?
I'm on encore CS5 running on a Mac 10.7.4.
The Burner is a 12x LaCie D2 Blu Ray burner. Any suggestions?

Hi Stan, thanks for the quick reply, I took your advice and did the build as an image and then burned the project at the recommended write speeds in Toast Titanium (10.0.9). The first burn was at 4x and the second was at 2x BD (an option in Toast) both speeds gave me the same result. It solved the issue with the freezing during disc playback, however, when I tried to navigate from chapter to chapter the disc, once again, freezes. Additionally, although it doesn't freeze during playback as with my previous burns, there's still slight skip at the same positions where there used to be a freeze.
I'd be content at this point with the slight skip, but it's been one issue after another with these BluRay authoring projects. This is my first project switching from FCP and I've burned 11 Bluray discs on this project and still don't have a deliverable project that I can give to my client. Not what I was expecting from Encore. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Write speed

I've had a few issues with the final output (skips, pauses, etc) on a few of my projects and I have a feeling a big part is the media I'm using. I'm using the cheapest generic blank DVD available. I'm going to start using either Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden from now on because of the recommendations in a few of the posts here. Would everyone agree with either of these formats?
Another thing I want to try to see if it helps my projects is reducing the write speed of the burn. When I go into Encore (CS3) I'm only offered one write speed (5x). If only one option is shown is only option available for me, or is there a preferences or something I can change to reduce the write speed to see if that will also help?
Thanks,
Ty

A big YES on the brand of discs
Have Encore make an .ISO and then use the FREE
ImgBurn
to create the DVD, to see if you have more options

• DR8-A (150D) Write speed problems under linux

Hi all,
I would appreciate a response from MSI , perhaps a modification to the next fimware release.
Linux applications have difficulty changing the DVD +-R write speed due to an alleged incorrect response from the DR8-A firmware.  See example, from growisofs author; http://lists.debian.org/cdwrite/2004/05/msg00192.html

So-far I have been unable to select a speed for the unit other than the maximum speed of the media. Apparently, when the burning program asks for the current writer speed setting, the media speed  is returned.
While I am impressed with the advertised versatility of the unit, i am disappointed in the number of "hangups" when unsuitable media is inserted. The only way to return the unit to service is to completely turn off the power, a re-start is insufficient. (Linux or Windows)
Thanks

Post your computer's specification.
And what kind of Linux are u using, i.e. what OS? Also try other burning software in Linux.
Note: I know how to use Linux myself.

• T61: Very slow transfer/copy (write) speeds, disk goes offline, for 1TB HGST (in 2nd HD caddy)

I put in a small 250GB Samsung SSD in my aging T61 (T7300 2GHz, 4GB RAM). Results while mixed are better than my existing 1TB HGST drive. I also decided to move my 1TB drive to the 2nd HD caddy (in place of the DVDRW).
However, I noticed that the transfer (write) speed is extremely poor. Shortly thereafter during transfers, it aborts, and the 2nd HDD goes offline (and is not even visible in Windows Explorer). Checking Device Manager does not reveal any lack of or missing drivers. I did however run Samsung's Magician software (with reliable settings, instead of high performance settings). I wonder if that made any changes to cause this.
I am wondering if it would make more sense to boot off of SSD in the 2nd HD caddy instead of the primary bay, have not tried this option?
Any additional configuration help/ideas/tips will be gratefully appreciated!

Your SSD will be able to read/write at speeds upto SATA1 specs allow (1.5 Gb/s). This can be increased to upto 3.0Gb/s if you install the "middleton" bios which is a lenovo bios that was modified by a 3rd party, however transfers to your ultrabay will be reduced to PATA speeds so even though you have an SATA drive, your max transfer speed will be limited by the interface. This usually isn't a problem because most users keep the data that requires fast access on the primary drive like your OS, installed programs and swap files and use the second drive just for storage.
This should explain the speed issues, but not why your drive is cutting out. If you're using a generic adapter that could be the cause. I've seen some that have poorly fitted connectors and when it comes to generic parts it's difficult to tell the good ones from the bad and the genuine adapters are difficult to find. The only easy way I can think of to confirm this theory would be to substitute a known good part which would be a problem if you don't have one handy.

I just bought a Lenovo S400 Ultrabook with 500GB+24GB Sandisk U100 SSD last month. It was equiped with German system, I formated this HHD and installed a Chinese windows8 64bit, with the RAID driver.
Now the HDD test result in atto disk bench without IRST tech is ok, the read and write speed are similar and values are all close to datasheet (Even the HDD actually has C5 warning...)

also the HD tune test result is ok (sorry I only have Chinese version fit for windows8).

• Changing clip speed causes Premiere to crash?

Hi, I'm making a video series and I have a problem. Everytime I change the speed of at least two clips in my timeline, sooner or later a message will come up saying "Sorry, a serious error has occurred that requires Adobe Premiere Elements to shut down. We will attempt to save your current project."
I have looked up the problem online and found another person who had my problem (He was on Premiere CS3). He says he was absolutely sure that the problem was caused by changing the clip speed.
Can anyone help me with this?

I suspect the issue is due to your video format... what format are your videos? Your problem will be solved by converting them to DV-AVI. See this FAQ on conversion:

• What are the advantages of varying write speeds and burn speeds?

What are the advantages of varying write speeds and burn speeds?

The slower the speed, the fewer burn errors (or, in other words, you'll burn fewer "coasters"). I've always tried to burn at a slower speed, i.e. 2x - 4x. I'd rather wait a few minutes more and I've never had any burn errors.

• *TERRIBLE* "Write" speeds w/2x Samsung 850 Pro Internal SSD (RAID-0).. HELP! ( pics)

http://imgur.com/a/5p05u
Hello.. I was really hoping somebody could help me out with this, as I'm pretty much starting to lose hope..
I've attached as many relative screenshots as possible, to make it easier to quickly see what's going on.
I've got 2x brand-new, Samsung 850 Pro 512GB SSD's installed inside my MacBook Pro.. One inside the hard-drive bay, and one inside the Optical Bay (SuperDrive Bay), using an OWC Data-Doubler..
I've got these drives configured using Disk Utility, into a RAID-0 striped configuration..
The drives are rated @:
Sequential Read: 550MB/s
Sequential Write: 520MB/s

So "theoretically", I should be achieving approximately close to double these speeds (since that's the basis behind RAID-0 configurations)
Both SSD's are connected internally via SATA-III (6Gigabit Link + 6Gigabit Negotiated Link Speed).. Both in the hard-drive bay, as well as in the Optical Bay (confirmed in pictures)..
I'm getting *EXCELLENT* "Read" Speeds, yet *HORRIBLE* "Write Speeds.. to the point that the RAID-0 software configuration is not even achieving *near* the "Write" Speed of even one of these drives.. let alone 2 of these drives in RAID-0..

I've tried contacting Samsung directly regarding this issue, but since they don't exactly get along with Apple, and even more-so, dislike anything that has to do with "RAID" configurations, I was left with practically no help on that end..
I've tried contacting Apple, who said that I'm pretty much on my own, in terms of support, since they don't exactly get along with Samsung either.. and don't provide much of any support whatsoever, when it comes to third-party, hardware components that are not upgraded directly through Apple themselves.. (aka no support for user-end personal upgrades)
Both of these drives are *Brand New* directly out-of-the-box, shipped from Amazon, as "new, un-opened" items..

I apologize in advance if there's a lot of pictures to go through, however, I know how much of a pain in the *** it can be to troubleshoot these sort of problems, let alone, try to help somebody else troubleshoot these problems while not physically being there in person.. I tried to provide the most comprehensive troubleshooting steps I've taken thus far, as to hopefully make this thread as fruitful as possible, and eliminate any unnecessary steps that have already been taken..
I've tried re-formatting and re-installing OSX Mavericks 10.9.5 several times now, hoping that maybe one of them would allow the RAID formation to work as it should, yet none so far have proven successful..
If you have any time to look through and read this thread, I can't tell you how appreciative I'd be for your help and any advice possible that you can give me.. I do large amounts of audio processing, producing, along with many other taxing system processes, so I'd really like to get this RAID-0 configuration working as it should be..
Please do not waste your time by bashing RAID-0 or writing an unhelpful, opinionated comment that does not move this process forward.. I understand the risks of RAID-0, I run daily backups, as well as having an Apple Time Capsule running in full-force, all day long.. My data is well backed-up, and I understand the risks.
If anybody has dealt with this sort of issue before, please, give me any advice that you can.. I tried to put in the most effort possible with uploading and embedding all of these photos, as to not waste your time and to hopefully make this troubleshooting process as smooth as possible
Thank you all so much in advance! :apple:

• How do I change the speed of a video clip after making it a Smart Object?

In order to apply the same Camera Raw filter to every segment of a clip I was going to split multiple times, I converted the whole clip to a Smart Object, applied my Camera Raw filter settings, and then split the clip and deleted some portions.  Now I want to make certain portions of those clips slow-motion, but even if I right-click on the right side of the layer and select "Clear Smart Filters", all I see when I right-click on the clip in the timeline are the motion options; I can no longer change the speed or the audio.  Is there a way to do this without having to make all the cuts in the beginning, changing the speed and the audio, and then having to go back and convert each individual segment into a smart object and then apply the same ACR filter to each one?

Brett,
Thanks for addressing this question.  I tried it and see that the embedded file is the entire clip that I started with, not the trimmed version that I turned into a SO, but at least I could go back and make a change that way in a pinch.
If you wouldn't mind looking at this video between :50 and 1:40, and tell me if you think that AE or PP would give me significantly better results in the jumping segments where I slowed it down to 25%:  2014-06-26 And the last thing I expected to see jump out of the box was Albert Einstein! on Vimeo.  I am trying to keep my expenses down by only using PS CC for video editing, and love the Camera Raw filter capabilities.  By using PS CC it also lets me lay down my audio and edit to the audio w/o, as Mylenium suggested, outputting my file from PS CC into either AE or PP to do the slow-mo part.
Thanks again for your help!

• How do I change the speed of the Final Cut Pro X "Ticker" Title option?

I am moving from iMovie to Final Cut Pro X.  I used to use the "ticker" title option all the time in iMovie, but when I utilize it in Final Cut Pro X, it scrawls really slow and only shows the first line of text before the video ends.  How do I adjust the speed of this option?

This Motion template effect isn't very useful at the moment.
Sadly, the only way of changing the speed is to modify the effect in Motion.
The speed is designed to get the word 'Information' at the default size and default typeface across the screen over the duration of the clip. If you add more text, or change its size, the text will not move off the edge of the screen by the end of the duration of the generator.

• Mac Pro slow write speed on Samsung SSD drive

Hi,
I am wondering why I get very slow write speeds on my Samsung SSD 840 Series 250 GB system startup drive in my Mac Pro (early 2008).
I get an average write speed of approx. 35 MB/s and not much more for top speed. I tested it by transfering a large file (8GB, .m4v) from my Mac Pro internal Raid 0 (4x 2TB Stripe Set) delivering up to 550 MB/s. The read speed of the SSD is around 270 MB/s which I consider to be OK for that I have just the 3 Gb/s internal SATA interfaces in my pretty outdated Mac Pro.
I don't see any Memory or CPU overruns or consuming system tasks while doing the tests and no other user programs except Activity Monitor is running. The following screen shots from the Activity Monitor should proove my findings:
Setup:
Samsung SSD 840 Series 250 GB (SATA 6Gb/s and 3Gb/s compatible) system startup drive. Free Space left on SSD is around 100GB of 250GB.
Mac Pro (early 2008, Model 3,1), 2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon, 8 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512 MB.
OS X Mavericks 10.9.1
Samsung sais there should be 540 MB/s for Seq. Read and 250 MB/s for Seq. Write for their SSD drive.
Any hints what could be done to increase especially that low write speed of around 35 MB/s (average) on the SSD in my Mac Pro?

Really great 'The hatter' !!!
Thanks a lot for your exceptional support.
Next to my 4x discs in the 4 SATA II drive bays I have installed a additional OWC drive kit that allows me to have another 2 disks sitting in the empty bay below the CD/DVD drive and those are connected to the motherboard. So there is a lot to handle for that controller you mentionned ;-)
I will follow your guidance and boot from my 'maintenance' system on direct attached external drive, install the TRIM Enabler there as well and do the DU repair run. I always have a separate system available that gives me the chance to boot my Mac from there. And in addition I regularly use ONYX to keep my OS X clean and do the maintenance.
Anyway, you're the man of the day!
PS; I am looking forward to finally receive my new Mac Pro (late 2013) ordered on the 18th of December one of these days and then I hope that I can fly ;-)

• How do you change the speed of a detached audio clip?

I have a piece of detached audio.  Video Frame rate is 23.98.  The piece of Video above it is Video Frame Rate 24.
How do I change the speed of this detached audio clip?

Nope, the Automatic Speed did not work.  I exported the XML, and then ran it through X2Pro to try and get my AAF, and it still spits out conform warnings/errors on those same spots.  Automatic Speed apparently did nothing helpful to my situation.  (Can Anyone explain Automatic Speed?)
Will have to try going through Cinema Tools per the similar issues noted in this conversation: http://forums.creativecow.net/thread/344/28007
Curious to see what FCPX would do with this media, importing the 24p file to a 25 Project cause a noticeable shift in both time and pitch.
I imported the time coded audio separately, and played it against the obviously speed and pitched changed video with embedded audio. The files did not sync.
The audio remained in time and pitch, while the video didn't. So the audio tc doesn't seem to effect playback in FCPX, but video definitely does, and it seems rather buggy.
So, if your video is 24.0 and your audio is 23.98 and you are in a 23.98 timeline, FCPX might be changing the speed of the video without really reporting it. Resetting speed doesn't do anything, hitting "automatic speed" screws it up a bit more (it goes the wrong way). Changing the speed to something like 96% (FCPX reports 96% but I know it's really ((24000/1001)/25) which is just short of 96%. Turning off the "preserve pitch" checkbox actually pitched the audio back to normal.
I didn't create the 24.0 vs 23.9 media that you have, but perhaps you are having similar issues, or a different combination/permutation therein.
But to answer your question, the time coded audio was not changed, only embedded audio.
and
But here some notes which makes things hopefully clearer.
Resampling and changing playback speed are two totally different things.
Samplerate for audio is the same as fps for video (not dpi for video) so let's call it sps.
You can record audio at any sampling rate. But let's take 48 kHz and 32 kHz here.
Record 60 seconds. Once recorded both files as stand alone files will play 60 seconds.
But forced to play back in a NLE timeline with a fixed sps of 48 the first file will playback correctly. The second one will play at 2/3 of the time (32/48). The other way round the 48 sps file will play longer in a 32 sps timeline.
Now for those poor guys who have to work with NTSC:
A real world second is not a second in NTSC video world. Its 1001/1000 seconds.
So selecting a 48k sps audio preset in a timeline preset means that a real world audio of 60 seconds is only 1000/1001x60. That means that those 60 seconds are only 59.94 seconds long. Its too short.
One way - if you stay strictly in NTSC - is to record audio with 48048 Hz. This way a real world 1 second audio will match a 1 second NTSC video.
Next option with BWAVE files is to change the playback settings in the BEXT header of the file. This won't resample the file!!!
Now about the TC. BWAVE doesn't have a TC in a way you're used when handling video. It has a timestamp in the header. This timestamp contains the Samples after Midnight. Based on that the NLE will convert this to TC which can be displayed. So in NTSC world this might give a wrong interpretation.
For example if you have a "Start TC" of 00:10:00:00 (thats what you see on your audio recorder) it means that using 48kHz the timestamp is at 600x48,000 = 28,800,000 samples. Since the real sampling rate in the timeline though is 48048 Hz you have to divide the source stamp by this number. This results in 9.99000999000999 minutes. So for a 23.976 fps project this is a TC of 00:09:59:10.
So setting the Bext header and/or iXML chunk to the correct playback speed will keep everything intact. Again this is without resampling!
Using an AIFF there aren't these options.
So you can edit all the stuff without resampling when using BWAVE. But resampling will happen when you export a final movie.
