Changing WRP file permissions with a GPO

I would like to set my domain workstations so that users are not able to launch regedit.exe, only administrators. Is there a way to set file permissions with a GPO where TrustedInstaller is still the owner and the file permissions are TrustedInstaller defaults
minus users? As soon as I push these manually defined settings via GPO, it completely breaks regedit.exe, and I get an access denied when I try to run it (even as local administrator).
Is there another way to deny domain and local users from launching regedit.exe (or any other WRP  file) and only allow SYSTEM and Administrators access through TrustedInstaller?
Thanks in advance

Hi,
Is there another way to deny domain and local users from launching regedit.exe (or any other WRP  file) and only allow SYSTEM and Administrators access through TrustedInstaller?
To achieve your goal, please enable this group policy Don't run specified Windows applications which is under User Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\System.
You can input “regedit.exe” within the group policy to prevent specific domain users from open regedit.exe. Those users will get a message as below when they trying to open regedit.exe:

  • Dreamweaver CS6 - FTP changing my file permissions on upload???

    ORIGINAL POST: SEPT 19, 2012  http://forums.adobe.com/message/4784335#4784335
Upgraded to cs6. All programs work perfect for me exceopt Dreamweaver.
I have never expierenced this challenge however no matter what file(s) I upload dreamwever is chanign the file permissions.
For instance if I upload an image to the sever the image won't appear. I check permissions and they are set to 0.  Same with files.
I have to now go in to each item I upload and change permissions to 644 or 755 depending if its a file or directory.
This is a Dreamweaver exclusive problem as it does not happen when I use Filezilla and Im working on 6 different servers.
ONLY when I upload files with Dreamweaver CS6 do the file permissions change on upload. Cs5.5 no problem.
    Any ideas?
    Aloha!
    STILL NOT WORKING UPDATE:
I was even on with India Adobe support doing a screen share and they watched in real time as I uploaded a file and Dreamweaver and it changed the permissions to 000. You can 'Get' a file with 775 permissions then 'Put' that same file and it will chanve to 000 permissions.
Support failed to address this problem after 30 days and never called back.
STILL NOT WORKING UPDATE: Changing ro SFTP seems to be a workaround.
See Full Discussion here as I posted in the wrong area. http://forums.adobe.com/message/4784335#4784335

I'm using DW6 version 12.2, and this problem is still happening.
The permissions are defaulting to 0664, where I need them to be 0644.  Every time I create a new file, it defaults to 0664, and I'm unable (not permitted) to view that file online until I go in, using another FTP program, and change the permissions to 0644... or manually go in the slow-poke way using DW6 Remote View -> [file name] -> Set Permissions.
Too bad there's no way to configure this in the Preferences area of DW6.

  • How to change default file permissions so others can write to file

We have 15 people sharing files on a network. If we open a file on the network, work on it, and save it, it is readable and writeable for everybody. But if we drag the file off the network, work on it on our own hard drive, and save it, and THEN drag it back to the network, it is read-only for everybody. Documents made on our own hard drives are, by default, read-only for others.
This is a real time waster for us!
This means that every time we make a document on our own hard drives, we have to remember to go to the extra trouble to change it's permissions before we put it on our network. Please, is there some way to change the default settings, so that if I, say, save a Word doc on my hard drive and then move it to the network, it is readable and writeable by everybody without me having to change it's permissions?

Sounds like you are not using ACLs.  When you double click your share point in Server.app, how many entries do you have in the Permissions window?  If you have only 3 then you are not using ACLs which explains why your permissions are not inheriting.  POSIX permissions, the base three of owner, group, and everyone, do not inherit.  You need to add at least one more permission entry to the table.  This is called an ACE (access control entry).  Together, you are building an ACL (access control list).  Try not to use users.  Always add groups if possible as it is easier to manage and never requires propagation of the permissions.

  • File permissions with OS X 10.3

Is there some kind of a major difference in handling file permissions in 10.5 compared to earlier versions?
We are using a machine running os 10.3 (not server) as a small scale file server in our office. Now, when some of us have upgraded to 10.5, there has started to be problems with file permissions on that 10.3 machine.
Problems occur when accessing files on that 10.3 machine with a 10.5. machine.
    Permissions should be like:
    owner: www
    group: staff
    but now it's:
    owner: nobody
    group: unknown
So sometimes we are able to use the files, sometimes not.
There has been discussion related to this earlier:

Having the same issue with any ppc mac client(10.5.2) trying to create folders or copy files to a xserve w/10.3.9. Spoke with Apple enterprise support and at first they had said they could reproduce it and were going to send it to engineers. I waited about a week and checked up with them and they said they couldn't reproduce it. They did tell me to try to make the volume permissions the same as the folder that is shared, but this did not seem to help. So I am not sure were to go with this. The only way I can get this to work is to use standard posix permissions and not inherit permissions from parent.
By the way if I use smb to connect it works fine. And also any intel machine with Leopard works fine as well.

  • How change the File Open With list of apps?

In Bridge CS3, how does one edit the list of applications in the File > Open With menu (also available from the contextual menu for any image).
The list contains a number of applications that I would never use to open an image, and I would like to add to it, a new image editor (pixelmator) that does not appear in it. I have looked in the Bridge Help and the Preferences dialog and don't see any option to do this.

OK, I have now learned that Mac OS keeps the list of which apps to open what, in the "launch services database."
This database can be cleaned up and reset which somewhat simplifies the list that is displayed by the Finder OR by Bridge CS3.
Here is an article on how to reset the launchdb:
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20031215144430486
Be sure to read all the way to the end as there are updated instructions down among the comments.
Here is a thread in the Apple Support forums discussing the same issue, and it includes links to some 3rd-party programs that can reset launch services without use of a lengthy Terminal command:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1289317
Even after rebuilding the launchdb, I find that a large number of apps are "registered" to open JPG files, including Camino, Opera, TextWrangler and others with only a tenuous connection to JPG. I don't understand why this is, and I would still like to find a way to limit the JPG Open-With list to a few graphics programs. But cleaning up the launchdb as described in the linked pages, did get rid of some programs and added some missing ones.
Hope this actually constructive info is useful to others.

  • Can you help? -- Browser Webpage Loading Problems after Repairing File Permissions with Disk Utility

    Hello,
I have been experiencing extremely slow startup times and slow application startup times for the past month on my 7-month old iMac.
I read in many places, including the Apple communities, that "repairing file permissions" using the Mac Disk Utility would help. So I ran it and now all my browsers including Safari and Firefox will not load or take 5 to 10 minutes to load a webpage - especially websites that have login features (eg. Gmail, Facebook, Hotmail).
As of my last re-start, Firefox will not load webpages and Safari is extremely slow at opening anything.
Has this problem occured for anyone after "repairing file permissions"?
    And can anyone assist?
    Thank you,
    Shane

    The Solution?
REINSTALL OSX using the Install DVD.
I called APPLE Support and we went through a troubleshooting process to rule out Network Issues, Software Issues, File Issues and Hardware Issues. This process was very thorough.
In the end, we used the Operating System Installation DVD to reinstall the system, which took about 60 minutes including downloading the updates. Reinstallation did not affect any files or lose any applications. Everything was as I left it -- nothing was missing. Easy.
Now everything is back to normal.

  • Workflow to change item/file permissions using a people column on the List/Library?

    SharePoint 2013 Online.
I have a Document library with users that can only add new items permission by default.
There is a new people column in that library
I presume I can manually change perimssions on one item/file to let a user have full control over that particular item.
Can a workflow be added to so that the user in that people column get's full control to the item on edit or new events in the Workflow?
Can all other individual users be removed with this permissions for that item from the events of the workflow?
    Thanks in Advance!

    Hi cyberpine,
In SharePoint on-premise, there are some workflow actions used to modify list item permission from SharePoint Designer workflow, like Add List Item Permissions, Replace List Item permissions. And these actions are only available in
    Impersonation Step.
I’m not sure if it is similar in SharePoint online, you may check this. If there is any further question, I would like suggest you to give a new thread on

  • How to change local file Permissions as a default

I have a mavericks Imac with certian permissions on a folder. when users copy and paste the folder on a server for others to use, some users are not able to acess the files.I know how to change the permissions on the folder manually. But I want to know if there is a way to make my own default permissions to stick with the profile for making new folders?
I have looked into booting to an OS CD and choosing default permissions for files and folders, but I dont see how that will change anything, becuase I don't need to reset the permissions, i need to be able to give access to certian users automaticaly.

  • Changing multiple file permissions - Applications folder

After using migration assistant in Snow Leopard and then changing the username of my primary user, all third party apps in my Applications folder require me to enter the admin password when moving, updating with Sparkle, etc. They don't seem to have a primary owner.
I saw the steps outlined here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1778969 for changing permissions on multiple files but I'm wary of doing this on the Applications folder.
Does anyone have any advice on how to fix this? I went through files individually and i'm still getting messed up permissions all over the place. Thanks!

DO NOT use "apply to enclosed items" on the main Applications folder! Do not use it on any system created folders. they often have hidden ACLs and using this button would propagate the ACLs to everything inside. this is the case for the main Applications folder. there is no easy way to do what you want because Apple changed the permissions structure in Snow leopard and the default applications no longer have read+write access by admin users by default. I would suggest you don't mess with permissions on Applications. if you ever need to update a 3rd party application simply delete the existing copy in /Applications and put the new one in. it will have correct permissions.

  • File Permissions with 10.6

    Hello there,
I have the exact same problem, and have followed the directions, but for some reason when I click on the gear icon, "Apply to enclosed items..." is grayed out. Is there something else I have to change?
Also, I have a side question, is there a way that I can specify who can see my shared items?  For example, when people are here working with me, who are regularly here, I want them to have access, but not a random visitor who is on the network just to use the internet.
    Thanks.

Did you unlock the Permissions?  Click on the lock icon at the bottom right.
For more info on sharing see "Sharing files with others on your network" in the Mac Help file.

  • I a owner and administrator. I can't change any file permissions. Help tells me to 'get info' on a file, them click on the lock icon to enter password. The lock icon is not present on any files I 'get info' on. How can I change permissions

I attached an external drive to my macbook pro for backup purposes. I found that the device is 'read only' for me. I read that I could change permissions by selecting 'get info' for a item and clicking the lock icon to submit my password. The lock icon is not displayed on any 'info' window for any file on my macbook, much less the attached drive. I am the only user and administrator as far as I know. What steps can I take to change permissions? Thanks. My 1st post.

How can I tell? The 'get info' window has no lock and under sharing and permissions, on says 'you can only read'. I did a get info on the Macintosh HD and it had a lock on it but said I could only read, for what that it worth.

  • File Permissions with Network Attached Storage

I have a simple NAS setup in my house with pictures and videos I drag and drop from windows 7 and OSX Snow Leopard. I have been using it for a year with both with no problems. I recently sold my Macbook and bought a new Macbook Pro. When I came to my new Macbook I noticed some folders on my NAS have a little red exclamation mark on it not allowing me access from OSX or windows.
I can only think that some how my old laptop gave it some permissions or something without me knowing? Can any one help me with how to change these permissions back or how not to let this happen again? I'm pretty computer savvy yet this just makes no sense to me at all!
I thought about doing the repair permissions but can't find the option to repair from a networked drive. Example: smb://nas1
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Also there are random folders that have read only access to them which I can not change as well.

It sounds like you want a DAM (digital asset management) application like Media Expression which is cross platform and will do what you want, manage the folders that contain the photos, add and edit ITPC meta data and much more.
I use it as my principal DAM app and iPhoto to create books, calendars, galleries, and other special projects.

  • Changing multiple file permissions

I have a corrupted user in Leopard.
So I am copying all the files I need over to a new user.
    Both are administrators.
Can I take a whole folder (Docs) and tell it to change all the files in Docs to give me read/write permissions or do I have to do each one separately?

Should be fine. First open a Get Info panel for the folder in question, and see if there are any "custom" permissions set on it. If not, you are good to go. If yes, it is a good indication that ACLs are set on that folder, and you should go carefully from there.
ACLs are a special system of file/folder permissions that overrides the regular UNIX permissions. They were first introduced in Tiger as a user-enabled option, but Leopard was the first OS X to make use of them extensively by the System.
A "deny delete" ACL setting is put on many system-created folders, like your home folder, your Documents folder, etc. This is to prevent accidental renaming or deletion of them. If you try to trash your Documents folder, you can, but you will be prompted to enter an admin password.
Clicking the "apply to enclosed items" button on one's Documents folder will set the "deny delete" ACL to all of its contents, meaning you will need to enter an admin password to subsequently delete anything inside.

  • Change multiple files permissions?

    Hi,
I would like to know if there's any way to change the permissions (from read only to read and write) of multiple files at once (without doing it one by one) ?
    Thanks in advance

I was able to find this concerning the X check box.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106712
    Execute (--x)
You can open the AppleWorks application if you have the execute permission for it.
Also note that you must have execute permission for any folder that you can open; thus File Sharing requires execute permission set for other, world, and everyone for the ~/Public folder, while Web Sharing requires the same setting for the ~/Sites folder.
