Changing Xraid name without unmounting the drives

Hello all,
I just took possession of a mac cluter with 3 - count 'em - three raids, all cleverly named "Xserve-raid". In order to make my life easier I would like to name them something distinguishable, if not distinguished. Is there a way to do this on the fly, without unmounting the disks (kicking off all of the users)? I can do it the bruteforce way, of course, but if RaidAdmin or someother app has a slicker way to do it, please make me privvy to it. Thank you!

No. There is no way you can change the name of the Xserve RAID within RAID admin without resetting the coprocessor and controller. Controller reset would cause LUNS to disappear and reappear to the host. There is a good chance the host would see data disruption.
Your best bet would be to schedule a maintenance window.

ps* Even if someone tell you that you can do it with no disruption, would you change it during production hours? Probably not a good idea. Keep it simple, and safe.

If all she seeks to do is to change the display name, and she’s willing to leave the account name unchanged, then she could do the following: log in as the administrative user and open the Users & Groups pane of System Preferences. If the padlock in the lower-left corner is locked, unlock it. Select the account that shows your brother-in-law’s name on the left-hand side of the window, and then on the right-hand side, change the text in the “Full name” textbox to her preferred display name. If desired, click on the padlock in the lower-left corner to relock it.

If you re-format it you will lose all the data on it!!!!! So make sure you have backed up the drive or moved all the data on it to another external HD or the internal HD on your iMac.

We are getting calls from our clients complaining of slowdowns in loading our Java applet. The reason is a virusscanner. If a virusscanner is in the middle, it can drastically slow down the download process, and therefore cause some high delay before the user can work on the our product as expected.
On this csutomer's side, it may take up to 10 min (the first time it is ran) instead of 1 min. JRE 1.6 is in use.
They dont want to exclude from antivirus scan all files from Sun\Java\Deployment\cache folder.
Question:
Is it possible to change file name policy in the JRE cache to make it less unique?

I suggest you solve the real problem - big files.
There are two scenarios
1. Initial download
2. Updates.
The first takes as long as it takes. No way around it.
The second means that you can't use one jar. Otherwise every single update requires downloading the entire application every time. Multiple jars means only the one that changed is downloaded.

Multiple files are required for the proer fnctioning of any of our GPIB products. Unfortunatly the installation is not as simple as copying a single file over. If you wish to make the installer silent, i believe this is entirely possible in a fashion similar to the details given at http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/websearch/0730A66245E6808086256CA8006E2183?OpenDocument.

If you want to change template based on parameter. you have to use below syntax

How do I change No Name camera to the actual camera name when importiing pictures from my camera?

(1) Connect your camera.
(2) If necessary, quit apps until you can see your camera's "No Name" iCon on your desktop.
(3) Click to highlight "No Name". Then key in the name you want to substitute.
(4) Press return to finish.
(5) Use the Finder > File > Eject menu command to eject your camera before unplugging.
(6) If you did it right, next time you connect your camera, the name you like will show.

Change administrator name without starting over.

Hope someone can tell me how to change the administrator name and or delete the one that's in there that was cemented in the system when I got the computer and replace it with my name, without re-formating the drive and starting over. It's a G4 tower with 10.4.11. I have tried everything I can think of....

I found a way to do this but it might be scary for a newbie. Open the accounts in system preferences and create a sub account with the name you want to use as the new administrator. Next check the new user to allow to administer the account and remove the check mark in the original administrator. Now open the library folder on the hard drive and find the preferences folder. Trash the com.apple.preferences.accounts.plist and reboot. The new name you created and authorized will now be the administrator. The original administrator will be deleted.
The kicker is you will not be able to ever change the account settings. The accounts button will disappear in the system preferences. Also you may loose contact with some software as the system partially reverts back to default. DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK and don't do it without backing up important files first externally and also be sure you have the install disks for your software if you need to reinstall something. It worked for me but so far I have only done it once. I did loose Safari bookmarks and some other minor things, had to re-do mail preferences but it kept Adobe stuff ect. Lost MS Office. Had to re-install that. The original items are still on the computer somewhere but.....

How to append a new entry in a list of 100,000 names without iterating the list each time?

I have a list of 100,000 + names and I need to append to that list another 100,000 names. Each name must be unique. Currently I iterate through the entire list to be sure the name does not exist. As you can imagine this is very slow. I am new to Java and I am maintaining a 15+ year old product. Is there a better way to check for an existing name?

We are using a Java list because that is how the original developers coded it. I don't think they planned for that many entry's. I know I need to re factor this which is why I am asking for opinions on how to make this more efficient. Currently we don't use a database for anything in the product so I would like to stay away from that if possible.
Ok - but it still raises the question in my mind as to how that data is being used.
I gave you a couple of options that will take care of the UNIQUE requirement (HashTable, HashMap) but the BEST solution depends on:
1. How often new entries are made
2. How often entries are deleted
3. How often entries are changed
4. How often entries are accessed
5. How the data is actually used
If you just have a one time requirement to merge the two lists then just do it and get it over with - it won't really matter how you do it.
But Hash classes will present their own performance issues if the typical access is for many, most or all of that 200k+ entries.
Without knowing the full set of requirements we can't really know just what part of the process needs to be optimized.

Is there a way of changing the name of a database schema without having to create a new user and exportng objects from the old schema into the new schema?

You'll need to brake this up into 2 or 3 cases.
One, not formatting and partitioning the drive, if you use the REFRESH scenario, the existing operating system drive will be cleaned (not formatted) and Windows will be installed on this drive
Two, with the User State Migration Tool you'll be able to achieve what you want, either using symbolic (hardlinks) or transfer the data into a migfile which can be copied to a fileshare or external drive, and copied back once the machine is finished.
Third, check for any remaining folders and files, by for example deleting all content other than the usual files and folders that are present after a fresh Windows installation.

How to replace a sub vi that is used in many main VIs with another sub vi under a different file name without repeating the replace vi operation?

I am converting a LV5.1.1 llb to LV7.1 that contains serial sub VIs ("Serial Port Read.vi", "Serial Port Write.vi", and "Bytes at Serial Port.vi") that need to be replaced with the newer VISA serial sub VIs ("VISA Read.vi", "VISA Write.vi", and "VISA Bytes at Serial Port.vi"). The older serial sub VIs are used on many different main VIs under the same llb, and I want to be able to replace all the older serial sub VIs with the equivalent VISA sub VIs in LV7.1 without repeating the same replace VI task on each main VI. Please advise if it can be done in LV7.1 and how?

If you have the old serial VIs in the llb, make a copy of it and delete them. Then, when you open the top level VI in 7.1, LabVIEW should replace them with compatibility VIs of the same name but using VISA.

Changing Users Name - different from the other post below

I want to change my home name under the places folder. It's not my account name that can be viewed in the preferences under account. When I got this new MacBook Pro and went thru the set up, somehow I must have agreed to use the name that is next to the house icon under places in the finder sidebar. I really don't know where they got it from and when I search the whole computer all that comes up is the user folder. I tried to rename the name but it won't let me. There has to be somewhere I can change that name short of clearing out the contents of the MacBook and loading a new system from the supplied start up disk.

Just to amplify -
An account actually has two names, the "long name" (now called "Full Name" in System Preferences), and the ""short name" (normally a single word in lower case, called "Account Name" in System Preferences when you first set up an account).
When you set up a user account and enter your "Full Name," the system will suggest an Account Name (the "short name"), and you have *just this one chance* to change it:
Once set, the short name becomes the name of your home folder (the house icon in Finder) and is not easily changed. You can't just change the home folder name, because the short name is also an intrinsic part of your user account. However if you very much want to change the short name, there are a few ways to do this. Apple's method is here:

It's somewhat complicated as you will see, and changing the short name this way can sometimes introduce a few permissions glitches. You could still try it, or since your Mac is still new, you might instead consider wiping the HD and starting over.
