Channel on apple extreme & roku compatibility

My airport extreme is set to Automatic for both 2.4 Ghz & 5 Ghz wireless channels.  But recently, my Roku has been unable to connect to the internet (it connects to the wireless network & the local network, but not the internet). A roku customer service rep suggested changing my airport extreme's wireless channel on the 2.4 Ghz band from Automatic to either channel 1, 6, 9, or 11.
Should I do this?  Under its current setting (with automatic channel on both the 2.4 & 5 Ghz), the extreme is providing excellent wireless internet connectivity for my iMac and iBook.  So quite frankly, I'm not eager to change a thing!
Would appreciate any advice, similar experience info!

Since you claim that the Roku can access the AirPort but not the Internet, changing channels will most likely not help. The key is to find out what the Roku is getting for DNS servers. These should match what your other network clients are getting.

  • Apple Extreme AC 6th Gen - Wifi slow download speed

My Apple Extreme AC seems to be behaving strangely and wanted to find if anyone else having the same problem, or if anyone know how to fix this.
The router is set to bridge mode and get it's connection from:
FTTH Modem (300Mbps connection) > DLink 865L (primary router) ==fast ethernet== Linksys switch > Apple Extreme AC (WAN port), the Linksys is Gigabit switch.
If I run speedtest using JPERF or WAN (speedtest.net) with a wired connection to my laptop, I get symmetrical download & upload speed of 100Mbps (benchmark).
Doing the same test on WIFI N 5Ghz, laptop is equipped with Intel Centrino 6300 AGN (450Mbps nic), I get a maximum of 45Mbps (download) and 95Mbps (upload). The upload is definitely okay, but what could cause the 50% drop in download speed? Even testing with JPERF i get similar result, except upload went even higher to about 120Mbps.
iPhone 5S connected to AE AC doing speedtest.net also yield similar result, 45Mbps (download), 80Mbps upload.
Doing the similar test (same laptop and same iPhone) with the DLINK 865L (main router) wifi 5Ghz as well, I can get:
Laptop: 150Mbps (download & upload), it varies a bit but not much
    iPhone 5S: 65~80 Mbps download, 80Mbps upload.
Is my AE AC faulty? Can I get Apple to "repair" it although I don't really know what is wrong with it.
I've tried manual radio selection & auto, nothing improves it, only degrade it further
On 2.4Ghz channel, i get half of what i get on 5Ghz, i.e. 20Mbps download, up to 40 Mbps upload

I have an iMac with 10.4.11 and a Mac Air 10.6.7. Will the Extreme be compatable with the 10.4.11?

10.4.11  Macs will have Kernel Panics when trying to use Dual Band Airport Extreme Base Station.  There are a few forums here dealing with it.  I just purchased an Airport Extreme Base Station and spent two days now figuring out why the old iMac G5 running 10.4.11 (Tiger) was Kernel Panicing.  There is a way that I am testing now that seems to be working.  I will post the link in a minute when I find it. Other solution is to upgrade to 10.5 .
    Here is the post
Aug 22, 2010 2:09 PM (in response to Acin)
Greetings... I have just found a resolution to this problem, at lease if you're using one of the newer Dual Band Airport Extreme base stations. This fix was provided by an AppleCare representative named Rebecca, and I am deeply in her debt. To review: MY PROBLEM - After installing a new Dual Band Airport Extreme in July 2010, I began to have frequent kernel panics with my older laptops running Tiger (10.4.11). My newer Intel/Leopard MacBook Pro ran fine with the new base station, but these older Power PC Macs with Tiger just crashed again and again. Pulling the Airport Card was the only fix. I tried every conceivable software and network fix; nothing helped. THE SOLUTION - The AppleCare rep talked me through this, but I'm pretty sure this was the procedure. Please note that I cannot guarantee that I have not forgotten a step! But I am fairly sure this is it. (If an Apple specialist is reading, please check this!) Keep in mind, this will only work if you have a dual-band Airport base station. I performed this on a Mac Pro running OS 10.6.4, with Airport Utility version 5.5.1 and firmware 7.5. 1. Launch Airport Utility.
    2. With the dual-band base station selected, click Manual Setup.
    3. Click the Wireless tab.
    4. Click the "Wireless Network Options" button near the bottom.
    5. Check the box that says "5 GHz Network," then enter a new network name in the Name field. (Your existing network name appears there now. Just delete it and type a new one.)
    6. Click Done. That dialogue will close.
    7. Now click Update. The Airport base station will now take about a minute to reboot. Here's what happens when you perform these steps... The utility changes your existing Airport network to 2.5 Ghz, and then creates a new 5 Ghz network with the new name. (It will apply the same password to both.) You will use the 5 Ghz network, the new name, for any new wireless computers using Leopard or newer OS. You will use the 2.5 Ghz network (bearing the original network name) for the older laptops running Tiger. This fix worked immediately, no problems. The issue is that Tiger does not perform well with 5 Ghz networks, and this causes the kernel panics. I now have two old G4 laptops running Tiger, both using my new Airport base station with the 2.5 Ghz network and running perfectly. At the same time, my new machine is using the 5 Ghz network at the same time. It seems quite stable. Good luck, and I hope this info is useful.

  • My IBM X220 does a better job accessing harddisks on apple extreme in wifi extended with apple express than my macbook Air

I have 2 harddisks connected to a Apple Extreme, and USB hub.
An apple express extends the wifi network. Both devices are located on 2 stages in the house.
I want to access the files on the HD from my Macbook Air downstairs. Maverick.
    Totally impossible.
My IBM X220 does a far better job.
    I Used 2,5 Ghz, 5Ghz. Different channels.
The router has a disabled wifi as the extreme takes care of it.
I'm at 4 meters from the express. This is ridiculous. If this is extending a network.
Any advise or tips on how to enable fluent audio access from my macbook air.
    Thank you guys

I run in bridge off mode from the express.
    So does the extreme.
Will changing to DHCP and / or NAT change anything ?

  • HT3728 how do I change my Apple Extreme password

how do I change my Apple Extreme password

It is extremely unlikely that someone has guessed your password unless you used something really obvious like "your name", "password", "default", etc as the password.
It might first make sense to find out how many devices are connected to your wireless network. If you "see" 4 devices, and you only own 3, then you might have an unwanted guest on the network.
    To find out....
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Hold down the option key on your Mac while you double click on the AirPort Exteme icon
Look at the number of currently connected wireless devices (Clients). You can perform this check from time to time to keep tabs on your wireless network.
If the speed on your network has slowed down, there are likely other wireless networks around you that are interfering with your signal. You need to restart the AirPort Extreme again so that it will automatically scan and select the best available channel to use at the time.
To do this, simply pull the power plug from the back of the AirPort Extreme, wait 10-15 seconds, and then plug it back in.
If you want to change the password for the network, open AirPort Utility, click on the AirPort Extreme icon, then click Edit in the small window that appears.
Now click the Wireless tab at the top of the window.
Edit out the Wireless Password and type in then new password, then do the same to Verify Password.
I would also recommend that you change the Wireless Network Name.
Click the Update button at the lower right to save the changes.

  • Disappointing first day with Apple Extreme

    Hey there,
I purchased an Apple Extreme Gigabit 2009 edition to get a good wireless solution for my mac-filled home network. I set it up, and I'm extremely worried about the signal strength... iStumbler shows 48% signal on the 2.4ghz band and 35% (!!!) signal on the 5ghz from the next room away from the router, equally ridiculously slow internet speeds.
I connected up my 5-year old NETGEAR 54mbps g access point and got a far more satisfactory response - close to the speed i should be getting.
Anybody have any ideas by any chance? I've tried changing the channels but no go.. I also find that I can't set it to 802.11n only (5ghz) in Airport Utility, and forces mixed-mode (2ghz and 5ghz) - seems apple have removed the option!!!
I really do want this to work, so i'd really appreciate any help!

    Thanks for your reply!
Sorry bout not explaining properly. What I meant was is that in most pictures that I've seen of the Airport utility, it allows the user to operate solely in the backwards-compatible 2.4ghz frequency, or it allows for the creation of a separate 2.4ghz ssid and a separate 5ghz ssid, but not the move to a solely "802.1n only (5ghz)" frequency. I think that this may help the horrendous signal strengths that I seem to be getting.
Unfortunately, as you can see in the screenshot below, I only have 2 quite unhelpful options available on my airport utility (7.4.2 firmware AE and newest Airport Utility that came with it):
    http://img191.imageshack.us/img191/4359/picture1tbb.png
Even then though... Isn't it still a little strange to be getting such low signal strength for a 5ghz ssid in the next room, as well as a far lower strength for even the 2.4ghz ssid compared with my old netgear access point..

  • Apple Extreme / Apple Express

I have set up an Apple Extreme modem and extended that with a Express for listening to my music. The Extreme suffered with double NAT errors so I changed it successfully. This network has never been a problem.
I then got the first of the two updates for Apple Extreme and lost most of my network - I only have bothered to try and keep the Extreme working. The problem is very poor signal strength - as I type this I am less than four feet away and the strength is about in the middle - i.e. SLOW. I have reset it several times. Just the Extreme alone before these updates permitted full strength all around the house - now it won't work with a door in between. Anybody else had problems with these updates?

Is it possible you're getting interference from something, such as from another WiFi network? There are really only three 802.11 WiFi channels (1, 6, 11) of the available channels that don't overlap, for instance. And even low-powered or marginal interference can seriously gronk on WiFi.
As for a discussion of the Apple Extreme firmware update, see:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=830859
If you're seeking packet loss at the distances likely under discussion here, look for interference from a cordless phone, game controller, florescent lighting, leaky microwave ovens, or the seven or eight WiFi mis-configured devices inevitably lurking "right next door".

  • Using 2 Apple Extreme's

    Hi,
Here is my situation: I have a GigE Apple Extreme on the 1st floor, while my laptop is on the 2nd floor. On the 2nd floor, I usually get about 4MB/sec at best, while right in front of the router, I get about 7.5MB/sec.
The question is: if I buy a second GigE Apple Extreme, can I link them up (extend?) so as to achieve a speed closer to 7.5MB/sec? My goal is to get at least a constant 6MB/sec.

    My configuration with two AEBSn:
AliMac wired <--> AEBSn <--> wireless <--> AEBSn <--> wired MacMini
(all machines 10.5.2, AEBSn gigabit latest firmware 5GHz only n mode)
My problem: from AliMac to Mini the transfer rate is about 2 MB/sec. In the other direction from Mini to AliMac it's only about 100 kB/sec.
This is the slow direction (Mini to AliMac). The AEBSn seems unable to establish a stable connection
And here it is much faster like it must be (AliMac to Mini)
There are no interferences or problems with channels. I replaced well working AP Express and AEBS snow by two AEBSn.
Any expert here with an idea how to get the bridge mode working in both directions?

I can not join my Apple extreme with the Apple express. I shows a conflict in the network! I've tried everything. How can they join on the same network?

It says that my DHCP has to be changed! How? to what?
It is 802.11g.express. but is set to default by the computer (Macbook Air).
    The other is 802.11n. (express)
Extreme is 802.11.g. Is the Main Airport.

  • Mac Mini will no longer recognize Apple extreme base as a base. HELP

I have a 2004 apple extreme base station that after a brief power outage would not work. the only thing I could do to get wireless to work was reboot (pushed on the button in the back for 5 seconds).  my computer now recognizes the wireless but it has been reset back to Apple ### and will not recognize it as a base station under the wireless options or in the Wireless Utility.
How do I make my computer recognize the airport as a base station again so I can password protect my network?

The main problem here is that you will need to use....or borrow..... a Mac that is running the Leopard or Snow Leopard operating system to be able to "see" the older AirPort that you have. A PC might work as well.
Macs running Lion, Mountain Lion, and Mavericks cannot be used to configure the older AirPort that you have.
Five years is considered good service for a router, and you have seen ten. You are way ahead of the game.
It is likely time to think about a new AirPort Extreme that will be compatible with the newer Mac operating systems. AirPort Utility on the iPhone and iPad will work on the new AirPort as well.

  • How can I verify that my Apple Express is "absolutely" extending my Apple Extreme?

    Greetings,
I purchased an Apple Express to extend my Apple Extreme due to intermittent Wi-Fi signal in part of my home.
I connected it and it automatically configured the Express to extend my Apple Extreme.
My question is how exactly can I verify absolutely that my devices (laptops, iPad's, etc.) are connecting through the Express and NOT the Extreme as they were before. (the Express is closer to all devices than the Extreme).
There has to be a way to verify this, however, I can't find it through searching the web.
To note, signal bars on devices have not and do not change.  Meaning they have 3 bars with, and 3 bars without, regardless.
    Thank you in advance.

For Windows-based computers, try entering the following at the Command Prompt: netsh wlan show networks mode=Bssid|findstr "BSSID"  You can also try: netsh wlan show all
This should provide you with a list of all Wireless Access Points that is detected by your PC.
For the iPad, I am not aware of any built-in apps that will show this. However, apps, like Net Analyzer should do the trick. There's also a Net Analyzer Lite version for free.

I got a usb hard drive thing
You've posted in the Airport forum, so is it connected to An Apple Airport Extreme?  If so, directly or via a USB hub?  If so, is it powered? Does the drive have it's own power supply?
Or is it connected to an Apple Time Capsule? Or directly to your Mac?  Or something else (ie, what)?
    How is it formatted?
and i try to turn on time maching it turns it self off. I try to back up it says disk cannot be found or somthing like that.
What does it actually say?  If you're not sure, post a screenshot.
I tried selecting the disk but that doesnt work either.
What do you mean by "doesnt work"?  What happens, or doesn't happen.  Any messages?  If so, what, exactly?

  • I just got my very first apple device (apple extreme router) but no dyndns?

I need to access my nas from outside. I got everything working, finally, except my dyndns account. Are you even able to use this router with dyndns? I got it yesterday and I like the signal, but no external access to my nas? I'm looking at this document but it refers to the older models I guess.
    http://dyn.com/support/clients/
This may be a deal killer for me. My old router is working but I see these at work so I wanted to get a bit more acquanted with the apple hardware which is why I bought my own router. The signal from this is a tiny bit better than my old router, but I could also access my dyndns account from that one.
I have tried the dyndns.com and http and https://sitename.com and still can't access anything. I have also forwarded the 80, 443, and 22 ports and still, nothing. I know the apple stuff is supposed to work out of the box, but I've had very little luck with that at all. I have now set up several routers and none "worked" out of the box. I have done manual and auto setups. At least now I'm getting a bit more familiar with them to make them work, but I'm still stuck on the dyndns for it. If anyone has any suggestions please feel free to post. I'm still scratching my head trying to figure this out, thanks. The only apple hardware is this apple extreme, I run windows 7 on my computers. Oh yeah that error I still get every now and then from the utility on windows just stinks. Usually after I get that I can no longer even get into the setup.

Check the Sound system preferences. If the volume is turned up and the Mute checkbox is not marked, you don't have anything plugged into the headphone/output jack, and testing the Alert Volume on the Sound Effects pane doesn't generate a tone, then the technician may have failed to properly reconnect the speakers and you'll have to take the Mac back to the Apple Store. First, though, try resetting the PRAM:

  • HT4262 Is there any way to extend my Apple Extreme Base Station using an Apple Express by via ethernet or does it only work via wifi and being in range?

From what I read, the only way to extend my Apple Wifi Network is via another Apple Airport Extreme or Express using overlapping wifi zones. If I try to connect my Apple Express to my Apple Extreme via Ethernet, then this is guaranteed to fail regardless of how I configure the Express. Is that correct?

It is certainly possible and better....in terms of performance.....to connect the AiPort Express to your AirPort Extreme using Ethernet to extend the network that way.
If you are having problems with this, then your setup is not correct....or....if your setup is correct, you may have a defective AirPort.
We can walk you through the steps to get things set up correctly if we can get some basic information to provide the correct settings.
What is the model number of the AirPort Extreme?
What is the model number of the AirPort Express?
if you are not sure, look on the bottom of the Extreme and side or bottom of the Expess. The model number starts with an "A" followed by four numbers.
We also need to know what operating system you are using on your computer. If you have a Mac, click the Apple icon in the upper left corner of the screen, then click About This Mac and post back with the OS X Version number that you see there.
We will likely have more questions about your current setup to understand things a bit better, so please be patient.
