Channels Won't SubSelect

Using 10.4.11 on a 2.3GHz PowerPC G-5 with 1.5 GB ram. When converting RGB file to Index color, the layer becomes partially locked and my channels will no longer allow me to sub select areas in them. Any attempt to sub-select results in selection of the entire channel. I have been using Index color PSD files this way for 8 years and this began happening 3 years ago. My "workaround" fix of clearing the color palette and reloading the colors individually, then adding them to the index color table one by one has stopped working. How can I use Index color and still be able to use my channels to edit individual areas of my design?

Were you using the 9237 I/O channels in FPGA mode or Scan Mode?  Scan Mode is not currently supported on Single-Board RIO, so that type of I/O is not directly portable to Single-Board RIO.  If you were using the FPGA to access your I/O, then you shouldn't have any issue getting your I/O to appear in the LabVIEW project.  When using RIO, there isn't a way to show/test I/O channels in MAX for CompactRIO or Single-Board RIO.  You need to build an FPGA VI to access the I/O or use Scan Mode and the Distributed System Manager if you are on CompactRIO.
Can you post a screen shot of your CompactRIO project with the targets expanded so we can see how you were using the I/O modules in your initial project?  Once we see that, it will be clear if you were using Scan Mode or FPGA mode and we can see what is the next step to getting your I/O available.

    If you are saying the headphones work fine then its most likely to be your ipod's headphone connection but try different headphones first,the ipod's internal connection is replaceable but i don't recommend you trying it, if it is within warranty, send it back to apple,

  • .mov files with alpha channels won't import on Adobe Premiere Pro CC

    Just FYI, Apple:
    This issue with Quicktime not seeing .mov files in Finder (or I should say, not playing them) is a HUGE problem for anyone who edits video.
    If you export a file as .mov in After Effects, and have any transparency (RGB+Alpha channels), there is no way to import them into current projects. None.
    PLEASE fix this, as I quite enjoy my job, and don't feel like losing it because my client doesn't understand why they can't have lower thirds in their video I'm contracted to do (and subsequently fires me and finds someone on a Windows rig).

    Based on my tests, it appears that the Mavericks embedded QT structure no longer considers many of the legacy compression formats to be supported under Mavericks. These formats were, by default, turned off under Lion and Mountain Lion which may indicate that Apple intends to drop even passive native support sometime in the future. Files containing Animation or PNG compressed data are no longer QL compatible and now force automatic QT X v10.3 conversion as mentioned above. Even worse, it appears other commonly used fomats like DV/DV in DV and AIC/PCM in MOV are also being relegated to this group. Luckily, DV/PCM in MOV, HDV/PCM in MOV, and ProRes422/PCM in MOV, along with all of my H.264/AAC/AC3/Chapter M4V distribution/iTunes managed files remain fully compatible with both QL and QT X v10.3 under Maverisks. This last is significant for me since many files containing AC3 as the primary audio stream are no longer QL/QT X v10.3 compatible with certain file extensions and/or container types which now appear to be checked in specific situations. Unfortunatly, what we've seen and learned thus far seems to be just the "tip of the iceberge."

  • Center channel won't work now

    I just did a fresh windows install, reinstalled the creative drivers and
    software. I have it set to 5. like before but now it's sending my center
    channel sound through my Sub. My sound card is a creative xfi xtremegamer
    fatality pro with z5500 as my speakers. I messed with all the options I can and
    the sound is all messed up.

  • After Quantum upgrade client box channels won't change & press C to change modes message?

    I press the remote and it just stays on the same channel. The only fix is a reboot. The issue comes back after a time even after reboots. Also what is the message on the info banner after you change channels that says press c to change modes?
    Who tested this latetes mess of an update???

    This is also a problem for me.  
    This is how I describe it:
    This happens pretty regularly on one of my non-DVR digital set top boxes.
    After it is rebooted I can use the guide to change channels.  I can browse channel line up and use the SELECT button on my remote to change the channel.
    HOWEVER, many times the guide "gets stuck" and I can no longer view the guide and use the select button on the remote to change the channel.
    The behavior is that no matter what channel you are watching (for example MSNBC), when you use the guide in the Favorites View mode, and you select a different channel from the guide, the channel changes to the first channel in your favorites list.
    There is no easy fix.  I reboot the router and it doesn't necessarily fix the problem.
    Sometimes rebooting the router and the set top box at the same time fixes the problem, but usually not.
    This makes the guide totally useless. 

  • Videos encoded with Apple Animation Codec won't play properly in QT7.5

    Quick Time version I have installed is 7.5 (149.5). I also have Perian 1.1 and Mpeg2 codec for QT.
    All of a sudden, all videos I render using Apple Animation Codec with alpha channel won't properly play in QuickTime, nor in Preview (when you click on .MOV file and press Space). They actually play, but colors are all screwed up and it looks like it's playing only alpha layer. I tried same movies on my work buddy's Mac and everything looks perfet. I also tried importing those videos into Flash, and everything works fine, but when I have to preview them in QT or using Finder's Preview, they look crazy. I can't send any screenshots since this thing happens on my work iMac (new aluminum one, Leopard 10.5.4, all updates installed) and I am at home now.
    I tried reinstalling QT but to no avail, nothing changed. I've looked through Library/QuickTime subfolder, and only items I could find were QuickTimeMPEG2.component, Perian.component, ffmpeg.component, and AppleIntermediateCodec.component.
    I'm slowly going crazy over here, because nothing I tried worked.
    Is there any way of completely removing everything QT related and reinstalling it from the scratch ? Please help!

    Hah, found out what's the problem. It is not my computer, it is not my QuickTime got corrupt. It is QuickTime's bug decoding movie file encoded using following combination of settings:
    Quick Time encoder
    Compression Type: Animation
    Depth: Millions of colors+ (alpha channel included)
    Quality: Best
    ParticleIllusion
    Output options
    Save Alpha - enabled
    Remove Black bg from RBG channels - if this item is enabled, this is exactly what gives QT problems trying to encode it. I repeat, this option must be enabled in some cases (it removes that nasty black-dirt-looking extra halo glow around the object that already has some kind of glow applied to it). It makes your animation rendered with alpha channel a lot better looking and animation seamlessly blends with any kind of colored background. Well, QT has problems "reading" this format.
    In the same time, if you import such animation rendered with this option enabled into Flash, everything looks perfectly fine. It's just QuickTime won't play it properly.
    Every single Mac I checked has this same problem, and it's not Mac's problem, it is QuickTime problem.
    I have two examples, you can see it yourself:
    First one is when black bg is still present in RGB channels (animation looks exactly as it should):

  • Changing stereo channels, panning, in GB

    Separated the left channel (containing rhythm section) on a CD song in GarageBand. Which enabled me to eliminate existing solo horn, allowing me to be the soloist.
    So, what I have now is the rhythm section coming out of the left speaker and nothing out of the right. Intend to add my horn, but if that's all there'll be in the right channel, won't sound right. At a minimum, what I need is the rhythm coming out of both speakers, with the solo horn in the middle.
    How can I do this?

    OK, it's not happening.
    Here's what I have:
    1) An existing, recorded real track containing the rhythm section. (Set to -64 on the left pan dial). That takes out the solo horn. But, when playing back, that rhythm section only sounds on the left speaker. Nothing on the right. (Trying to move dial to 12 o'clock just brings the horn back in.)
    2) In the Track Info panel, Browse Tab, tried two options: 1) Using a Presonus Firebox preamp, six different mono settings are availalbe (tried them all) and two stereo; 2) Disconnected the Firebox and went with built-in (computer) inputs, offering two choices for mono, one for stereo.
    Regardless of the options I tried, when I chose a mono for the track, with the pan dial still set at -64, the solo horn pops back in. Although now with the rhythm section in the left channel. Nothing in the right channel. Moving the dial has no effect on the reappearance of the solo horn.
    Really want to fix this. If I went with what I have now, I'd end up with rhythm on the left, me on the right (or middle if I chose). Just doesn't sound right. Ideally, what I'd like is me in the middle and rhythm section split, right, middle, left. But that ain't going to happen. If I could just get the rhythm coming out of both speakers, myself in the middle, I'd be alright.

    I am sorry, but you can't download anything while using the Internet Channel.  And wanting Nintendo to enable downloads in the Internet Channel will open the Wii to hacks and viruses from the internet.
    So there is no way you can upgrade the Internet Channel's Flash player yourself.  You'll have to wait for Nintendo to update the Internet Channel with a newer Flash player version (currently the Internet Channel uses Flash Lite 3.1 which is equivalent to Flash 8).
    So if you're trying to watch a video that is Flash 9 or higher, the Internet Channel won't run the video.  You'll have to use your computer for viewing it until Nintendo updates the Internet Channel with a newer Flash player.

  • Copying a channel

    Hi all,
    I want to use an old sample for a remix, but the part I need to use has the audio on the left channel only. Is there a way to copy/paste the channel to the right side to make it stereo?

    Click and hold the little circle or stereo symbol below the fader on the track: choose Left and the audio will playback in mono but centered.
    Copying it to the right channel won´t make it stereo, but will achieve precisely what is described above, but in a much more complicated way...

    IMPORTANT:
    By default, Photoshop comes with the Proofing Colors (Cmd/Ctrl+Y) activated and set to CMYK. Adobe must warn about that, because I was editing a large amount of pictures for work and I was doing it under that color profile/work space.
    LAYERS PANEL:
    Layer Adjustments:
    Solid Color: visual feedback in real time.
    Gradient: IDEM as above.
    Pattern: IDEM as above.
    Gradient Map: IDEM as above.
    Gradient Editor: IDEM as above.
    Opacity and Fill: IDEM as above.
    Curves and Levels: Ability to load alfa channels. This way, the adjustments made on the alfa channel won't be destructive.
    CHANNELS PANEL:
    Channel Luminosity Selection:
    Ability to add and subtract from the selection.
    Ability to designate an area to be selected.
    For point 1, by using the shortcut Cmd+Alt+[number] the luminosity of a channel is loaded as selection. With Cmd+Alt+Shift+[number], the selection grows. But there is no way to subtract from selection (unless by clicking with the mouse on the channel's thumbnail). I think that can be solved by using Cmd+Alt+Shift+[- or +] in order to subtract or add from selection.
    Point 2 maybe even more important than point 1, because it allows selecting a designated area by the user, instead of the default luminosity selection, which ranges from 50% of the mid tones to the highlights (or shadows, if the selection is inverted). The user should be allowed to select the starting and finishing points of the luminosity selection.
    I thought 2 ways for solving these issues (and making it more intuitive and faster):
    A) By using the Histogram Panel, by dragging and highlighting an area on it, that it should load the selected luminosity pixels as a selection, as shown in figure 1:

    So the result of doing that will be a selection based on the area of the histogram that have been highlighted.
    B) By creating a new Adjustment Layer:
    It can be based in the same structure of the HUE Adjustment Layer, like figure 2 shows:

    The selection can also be controlled by using the Click and Drag as suggested in the figure 1, as shown in the figure 4:

    The overlaid highlighting over the histogram can be functional or just a mere graphic representation of the Range and Fade Selector. The "Fading" areas should be also be draggable in order to increase smooth the selection. However, the smoothing can be much better done with the Refining Selection tool and it can be ignored from this new tool.
    In any of these cases, the adjustments should give real time feedback when growing or shrinking selection; we must see the selection going bigger or smaller and also, the highlighted area should be draggable as well.
    TOOLS PANEL:
    Brush: detect edges while painting on masks (for manual mask refining. It would work similar to the Replace Color Brush, but only for masks and alfa channels). It also needs a shortcut to set the opacity.
    Dodge & Burn: Protect Tones should be allowed when painting on masks or alfa channels (for manual mask refining). D&B can also use edge detection as well.
    FILTERS:
    Some of them, like the ones involving Blur or the High-Pass and the Unsharp Mask filter, should work in real time (these ones, at the least).
    It can also added a Particle Generator Filter.
    It would be really nice having the ability to create particles such as dust, fog, rain, snow, etc in a more realistic manner than just the scattering function from the Brush Palette, or by mixing different filters with different blends. The Particle Generator should have an slider to control the depth of field, so it will give a feeling of depth and also, a way to load masks, so that way, the particles can exists before the image and also, behind. It would be great for creating a nice feeling of depth (kind of a bokeh effect).
    I've been playing with After Effect few times, and the way to create shapes and forms from nothing is the way of easier than in Photoshop.
    TIME LINE:
    I think it's time give dynamism the filters applied to a movie clip, and also, dynamics to the fade effects, like it happens in After Effects by adding Bezier Curves.
    HISTOGRAM:
    It should be possible to zoom in into the histogram, for a more precise feedback and analysis of the image tonal values.
    ADDITIONAL FEATURES:
    The fade tool should work in real time.
    Loupe/Magnificator View:
    This is very useful when it comes to edit and image in detail, with a lot of zoom, like 3200%. Unfortunately, Photoshop doesn't provide a real time feedback in an additional window, such as the Window/Arrange/New Window For […].
    It would be really useful having a window showing the image at fit on the screen while working on the other window at 100% or 3200% of zoom, but in real time. This way, you can see if you're doing a good job on the pixels or, if you're overdoing it.
    It happens that, when working with big images at 100% of the image size (or more), the brain cannot figure out how is looking the whole image, so having a realtime feedback in the other window would help a lot for detailled work.
    And why not, ading the same real time structure descrived above but to the Navigator, for faster and lighter use of the hardware capabilities. Probably, adding a check box to the navigator that blocks it to a given zoom, so when zooming into the image in the navigator, the image shown in the window isn't magnified too.

    I cannot post examples of the other features I'm suggesting because there are not such new features yet (I would have to create an hipothetical enviroment, but I think, you can fiure it out in your mind).
    Unfortunately, I don't know programing, even though, I tried something with Filter Factory, achieving good results, but that pluging consumes too much resources and/or is bad designed/have not the right tools for certain things.

    This is a poorly explained reason about why is so important having a loupe in Photoshop. I've not also, used the best example, but I will. This belongs to the ADDITIONAL FEATURES: Loupe/Magnificator View:. Also, I will try to make my english clrearer, but here it goes:

  • Can an LDAP server be it's own client?

    In short yes, why would you want to do this? Many reasons, but mine is to be able to use ldap on laptops running Solaris and have them log into the machine with ldap credentials off the network. When we plug them back onto the network, I have a master server send any new data via one-way replication. I will give 2 separate ways to accomplish this. One is, to put it bluntly, a dirty hack to get it working. The second is much more elegant and it's the one I have stressed tested to verify that it works.
    Disclaimer: I have only used these methods on Solaris10 update 3 with Trusted Extensions using directory server 5.2 as well as the administration server. I have used a few different kinds of machines (all x86) and have not had a problem with it. I do not know if it will work on any other version or hardware. I haven't even looked at the source code, all assumptions made here are from observing the systems behavior while making minor changes.
    Now, the reasons why normally you can't be your own client (at least as far as I can tell) is because of the way the system boots and the dependencies that the ldap/client service needs to start up. If you boot a machine that is it's own client and ldap/client runs before the directory server starts, of course it will fail. The system boots the services first, then legacy init scripts. Directory Server 5.2 uses init scripts. Correct me if I am wrong, but that is the only real hurdle in your way.
    So the first way to get it 'working' (dirty hack) is to delay the ldap/client smf service from starting until the directory server is started. After you become a client of yourself (in this case the global zone) disable the ldap/client serrvice.
    svcadm disable ldap/clientThen enable it temporarily with the -t option
    svcadm enable -t ldap/clientWell if you were to reboot now it would not work because the service would not start at boot because it is set to be administratively down. Edit the S72directory script in /etc/rc2.d and after the start commands just add the svcadm enable -t ldap/client command and it will load right after directory server starts. Will this work? Yes, is it a clean way to do it? NO. I used this method just for testing the theory that the only reason I could not be my own client was because of the booting issue.
    Now the best way that I can see to accomplish this is to create your own smf services for the directory server and admin server. That way all you have to do is add a dependency to the ldap/client xml file to wait until the new directory server service is started before it starts. So in /var/svc/manifest/site create a folder called ldap (I put this in site because I didn't want to run into any issues of patching). In /var/svc/manifest/site/ldap/ create two xml files named:
    quick note: These are the first services I have created. There may be a much better way to make them. If you can re-code it better, please let me know so I can look at them. Also there is no restart command in here (actually I just noticed that) so adding one of those would be wise.

    Any changes made to the /ldap/client xml file must be made after ALL zones have been installed. If this file is copied to a zone it will never work as the directory_server service is not loaded in the zones.
    Now what? You must remove the legacy init scripts in /etc/rc2.d. Those would be S72directory and S73mpsadm. No need to keep them around, alternatively, you can just change the capital 'S' to lower case and they want start.
    You can now either use svccfg to validate and import the new services or you can reboot. Typically, I reboot and use the '-m verbose' option on boot to watch the services for any errors. I haven't had any lately but on different systems I always watch to see if it behaves different.
    That's it. I have rebooted all the machines many, many times without error. This of course does not address loading the directory server or adding users, tnrhdb file, etc... We have scripted most of loading out and once we get some error correction coded in I will post them.
    Also, if you find any errors or even a better way to accomplish this, please post it.

    This restriction is only in terms of implementing the Solaris support for LDAP as a naming service. If the Solaris OS is configured to use LDAP as a naming service, it can't use a LDAP server running on the same host.
    The reason is that the LDAP server makes naming service calls before it gets fully started up. If the OS wants to use the LDAP server for the naming service, then a deadlock happens, where the LDAP server's gethostbyname() call can't complete because the LDAP server isn't up.
    It is possible to configure the Solaris naming resolution to avoid this problem. I've got a system set up this way myself. Regardless, the official support channels won't support a system set up this way, so if you do this you do it at your own risk.

  • Audigy 2 ZS Platinum

    First of all, Hi this is my first post here. I own an Audigy ZS Platinum Pro, an SB Li've, and have been a loyal Creative customer since the Soundblaster 2.0 6bit I fitted to my 386SX. I've been working in I. T. for 3 years in various roles, from C++ programming to IT Management. I'm currently certified as an eMCPA, MCP, MCSA, MCSE, MCSA&MCSE+Messaging, and am about to complete a VCP and soon?a Cisco Unified Messaging cert. I'm far from uninformed, I guess that's what I'm trying to get across. Now some other facts:- Windows Vista has been available to corporate customers since November 2006.- Windows Vista has been available to retail customers since January 2007- Windows Vista SDK including Driver SDKs have been readily available since early 2006. Yes you read that right.
    Now, I like most people downloaded the Audigy 2 ZS Plat Pro drivers for XP and found they didnt work under Vista. Things like the scale of the volume controls was way off - but Surround sound was strangely enough working. I have a full surround sound system with either SPDIF or just RCA inputs. I use either, I'm not that fussed. I could not use these drivers as there were so many bugs under Vista (the XP drivers) that it wasnt workable. I then waited for well over a month. Eventually, Creative release the first beta drivers for the Audigy 2 ZS Plat Pro under Vista 32bit. I install these drivers, and find to my dismay, everything sounds absolutely terrible (I'm not sure how the quality can be so bad?) and also the rear channels won't work. No SoundBlaster applications are installed. It's like I'm using the worst onboard sound ever invented with the world's worst driver and application support. At this point I'll remind you?I paid over $450 for this card and external box. That is a massi've expense and one I only outlayed due to my previous faith in Creative. I already had my suspicions about the quality of the drivers due to the way the previous XP drivers had been bundled into 3 files then a patch and then that was changed, and it was all very seemingly mismanaged. Anyway the drivers bomb out without warning on January 2th, which I was very much less than impressed with.When I first hit the Creative site that morning, the updated drivers were NOT available. That is absolutely unacceptable. Later that day, the current drivers were posted. With massi've warning labels like "THESE ARE AN UNSUPPORTED BETA DRIVER. DO NOT USE THESE....<continues like this>" I download these and install them, and find to my dismay CMSS might be present but it's implementation is very very poor and I'm getting truly abysmal quality through the rear channel. It's like somebody ripped the DAC out and replaced it with one they bought from a 25cent bargain warehouse. I then change volume settings and attempt to use some of the features of the card and find that practically nothing that is present in the XP drivers is actually working in these drivers. There is no point using these drivers other than to hear Windows sounds. They are buggy, suffer from massi've quality problems, and do not include any of the features that I bought the card FOR and also cripple my home stereo/theater sound reproduction to the point it's not worth bothering with. So thanks, Creative, for because of your drivers alone, I'm now dual booting to XP and having to wait to actually begin using a new operating system, for absolutely no reason other than the incompetence displayed by Creative. Not anyone elses, the Video card has been working fine since Vista Beta , and every single other device in my system including USB sticks and third party disk controllers, all work great under Vista. Every single, and I mean every single, one of these other manufacturers had a software team that was worthy of the hardware. I'm afraid that I can't say the same for Creative Labs. The software is truly terrible now, you need to fix this situation. In closing, let me also remind you that it is now the 2st of February, 2007. These unsupported beta drivers have been my only option for well over a month. Prior to this drivers that were barely alpha release drivers were my only option, and prior to that - I had no option. This is completely unacceptable. Microsoft did not just spring Vista on the market; SDKs were made available 2 months in advance and even futher in advance for hardware vendors. Please stop blaming Microsoft or implying it is their fault for implementing DRM. This was documented, published, warned about in advance, and any software or hardware manufacturers caught behind the 8 ball like this should be truly ashamed, and fully expect to lose the vast majority of their Enterprise level customers, which filters down to the IT Media, which filters very quickly down tos Consumers. Once your products are recommended AGAINST, on major websites and in major IT publications, the retail customer will no longer select Creative. Do not be complacent, it will happen if nothing changes and extremely rapidly. This will take a long time for the user base to forget too, we will be suspicious and never trust Creative for many years. Neither I, nor my businesses, will ever buy a PC with a Creative component in it again, and I have written to local Computer publications stating the same. I am removing my Creative hardware from the systems, and will move to another high end manufacturer that does have current Vista drivers. Believe me people there are cards out there with better SNR and all of the features and more, with driver support. This shows a real lack of commitment to the customer base on behalf of Creative. This post is not intended to start a debate. It is a letter from myself, and my?local I. T. community, to Creative, for comment on by the community. Everyone should realise that the software development lifecycle for a modern I. T. hardware vendor needs to be tracked closely to the operating system vendors' releases and patch levels. Creative, are not behaving with any professionalism. This is not an operating system being delayed, this is a driver, the tools for which have been made readily available to Creative by Microsoft directly for over 2 months, Creative manufacture the hardware, and to add insult to injury Microsoft worked with hundreds of hardware vendors to ensure Vista compatibility. For the Creative Vista drivers to be in this state of disarray on February 2st 2007 is a terrible reflection on Creative, showing a massi've lack of planning.     Well so far this only Issue Im having with my my Audigy 2 ZS Platinum Pro drivers , it's the sound is Crappy, but to be honest, it look like a performance Issue , cause if im not in a game the sound is quite better, but as soon I've let my music play during a game, the Sound Goes to So So to BullS**T. Im in IT since a long time, I won't tell all my degree and so but..! Im a pro..!?While Running Game my Sound card decrease my performance. And sometime I need to restart cause Cracking noise get over the game. I can be 2 Weeks without restart Needed...!If there any Beta Drivers Available I would like to be on trials...!BTW IM not just blaming Creative for Drivers and Issues, developing Drivers under Vista is Really new,Hardware layer are really not the same as all windows OS..!   • Black Update - Can't Make Calls when transferring ...

    Since the Black Update was installed on my Nokia Lumia 521 in early April 2014, I cannot make calls when traveling from one cell coverage area to another on T-mobile's network without shutting the phone off and restarting.  
    I've replaced 3 phones, a SIM card, done multiple soft and hard resets and done a system recovery through a USB direct connection to the computer, all to no avail.  I suspect that this Black Update also caused my battery to prematurely malfunction and fail.
    I have been in contact with T-mobile advanced support multiple times.  I've contacted Nokia Technical Support, who did not acknowledge the problem, but directed me to do the Software Recovery Tool and USB installation, which I have done several times.
    I found another user who had this same issue in the www.wpcentral.com forum.
    This appears to be a Black Update software issue and not a phone hardware or T-mobile network issue.  I had no problems whatsoever with the Amber Update.  I have had the phone since August 2013.
    I have no problems in multiple coverage areas with a Google Nexus 4 or a BlackBerry 8900.
    Please advise how to fix the problem.

    Here, we are an end-user-to-end-user discussion board, all we can provide it solve usual pitfalls and create workarounds. For a network issue like yours, I recommend to keep-up with T-Mobile USA because they are the only one how are able to diagnose this and they have channels to report this to Nokia. Every other support channel won’t be as good as them. If they refuse to help, you have to find another Nokia Lumia 521 with Lumia Black, and test your subscription with his device.

    I've checked "send after loading project" it was already tick. I found environment from German Yamaha site and i see no problem reloading the project. But only first midi channel won't send correct patch information. I will take that

  • Linked images: BitsPerPixel?

    Hello,
    My style of work is to place raster 16 bit images in Illustrator and work with typography over them. After I'm done I just export the artwork directly from Illustrator for printing. Now I'm starting to get very concerned about the output quality of my linked images since all exported files from Illustrator (regardless of file type) have 8 bits per pixel. I have 2 questions about this:
    1. Should I continue to export files from illustrator as final files for printing? Or should I place the vector part (done in Illustrator) to Photoshop and save it for printing there? Or is there something else I should know about this BitPerPixel conversion?
    2. Whenever I place a vector image (8 bit and 16 bit) to illustrator, it shows 24 bit in document info -> linked images. Why is this happening?

    You're worrying about nothing. No method I know of can actually print 16bit - even the finest inkjet printers with all their nano drops and dithering tricks can't. However, that in itself contains the answer. Ultimately it doesn't matter what bit-depth, for printing it only matters how the color is perceptively transformed, meaning
    a) how fine/ dense the raster is
    b) how pigmented/ saturated/ opaque each ink area or halftone spot is
    c) the reflective and transmissive properties of the printing substrate are figured in
    That's what color profiles do and what they are meant for. They may use 16bit or even float values to improve mathematical precision, but ultimately most of the time a single ink channel won't even exhaust the number of levels that could be expressed with 8bit. Since e.g. offset inks have a specific viscosity that prevents them from printing dots smaller than a specific size or below a certain opacity, the printing plate and thus the color profile used to create it would have to obey these physical limitations, limiting the range of possible variations. So in the end, all that matters is having a correct color profile and workflow built around it to be able to control how a high bit-depth image is transformed to a low range color space. Of course there may be potential to improve your output by doing part of this in Photoshop, but it will really depend on teh specifics...
