Chapter glitch

Not sure if this is more of an iDVD question, but I'll post it here as well -
I have two seperate iMovies on one menu in iDVD with no chapter markers in either movie. If I'm in movie #1, and press the chapter advance button on the remote, it automatically goes to movie #2.
My questions - Any ideas on how to prevent advancement at all in a movie without chapters? If I add chapters, will this stop from happening?
Thanks for your help!!

omeone viewing the DVD may do it and get confused. I'm looking out for the simple minded people out there.
Ah! Got it! And, of course, you are right.....there are lots of indiscriminate button pushers out there!
You don't have to have a lot of chapters, just something for the button to find will do it.

Okay, I have two seperate movies on one menu with no chapter markers. If I'm in movie #1, and press the chapter advance button on the remote, it automatically goes to movie #2. In movie #2, the chapter reverse button doesn't do anything, but if I press the chapter advance button, I get taken back to movie #1. I added chapters in the movie and it solved the problem.

  • Pause/glitch in photo slideshows at chapter changes

    Hi all.
I'm a wedding photographer and use iDVD to make slideshows for my clients of their wedding day. I usually make separate slideshows for getting ready, the ceremony and the reception. If a particular slideshow is longer than seven minutes or so, the DVD apparently needs to switch chapters. When that happens, there's a bit of a pause where the photos and the music stop. I have a client now who says her slideshow just stops there all together and they don't get the rest of it.
    Suggestions?
    Thanks very much.

Slides in an iDVD created slideshow are treated as 'Chapters' and the slideshow is a 'Track'. A DVD is limited to 99 Tracks and each Track is limited to 99 Chapters.
Prior to iDVD 6, ALL iDVD created slideshows were limited to 99 slides for this reason. Starting with iDVD 6, Apple created something of a 'hack' that links tracks together making a longer slideshow. Unfortunately, many/most DVD players don't like the 'hack' and will pause/quit/drop audio after 99 images.
The ONLY safe way to create a slideshow of more than 99 images is to create it as a movie out of iPhoto or in iMovie.

  • Image swap glitch

Okay, I've got a glitch with an image swap. There are sopmething like a half a dozen pages in the site rebuild that have image swaps and none of the other have any problems. But this one has managed to find a glitch and likes it so much it won't let go.
I've got the usual table arangement (as in the Classroom in a Book chapter 10 lesson) with the base image in one cel and the links in the others. There are three images that swap out with the main one. I'm using the behavior of clicking on the link to swap the image, not a MouseOver. People are supposed to look at the images, and then if they feel like it they can put the base image back by clicking on that link.
No problem with the first image. No problem with the 2nd. No problem with restoring the original image.
But. No matter how many times I've relinked the 3rd image, clicking on it in a browser gives me a blnk browser page with a message claiming that the image does not exist. When I hit the back button to get back to the page, there is the image right where it is supposed to be. So clearly the code is finding it, but it's sending out a false alert first.
I am assuming that the glitch is in the code, but I don't know enough about code to know what I am supposed to be looking for to find it.
    Any pointers?
    J. Odell

I went back and hunted through it again and found the problem. Somehow the code was putting a '3' where there ought to have been a hashtag. No idea why it was doing that, but once I replaced it with a hashtag the problem went away.
I'd relinked it a half a dozen times, so it evidently really liked that glitch.
BTW, can you give me any pointers on how you adjust the spacing between paragraphs? two full lines is more than really needed to make the distinction between paragraphs. The version of CSS that GoLive 8 used recognized a setting for adding something like one and a half lines between them. But if that's still in there I don't know what they call it these days. I would assume that it would be in the Block settings along with the justification, but nothing in there looks right.

  • I am trying to burn DVDs from iPhoto slideshows.  My pictures number in the hundreds and we know that iPhoto captures 99 and then "starts over".  This plays fine from the Mac Book but glitches arise on the DVD when playing it on a DVD player.  Any suggsts

I am trying to burn DVDs from iPhoto slideshows.  My pictures number in the hundreds and we know that iPhoto captures 99 and then "starts over".  This plays fine from the Mac Book but glitches arise on the DVD when playing it on a DVD player.  Any suggestions on how to overcome the 99 "Chapter limitation" that IPhoto has?  Has anyone heard or tried an app called Vilisoft?  I read good things but I am not sure if it will do what I want.
    Jim

Then use multipel 99 picture slideshows.
You can have up to 8 or 9 slideshows per menu.  If you add a sub menu reduce that by 1 and add 8 more to the sub menu.  The top menu can have links to up to 8 or so submenus (depends on the theme) and each submenu can have up to 8 or so slideshows.
However, converting a very large slideshow to a QT movie as Terence suggested does not envoke the 99 slide limit in iDVD.  It just becomes a single video/movie file.  So you should not have a problem with exporting at the large size, 720 x 540,
and dragging the resulting file into the iDVD menu being sure to avoid any drop zones.

  • DVDSP QT loop in menu drop zone button has glitch at end of loop

I've tried reading all the other posts but none seem to exactly address my issue:
I have a simple QT that loops in one of my menu buttons, and the end jump is set to start at chapter 1, but each time it gets to the end, there's a split second of a "glitch" where the entire menu "shutters" if you will... you can't see it in simulate-it only happens on the final burned DVD test. It's not a smooth loop! and it makes the other buttons on the menu twitch... any clues?

Hi Yvonne - it is completely normal for there to be a pause or stutter of some kind as the menu loops, but it shouldn't be a jarring change. The reason it happens is because the laser playhead has to physically relocate itself back to the start of the material, refocus and begin playback again - it takes a little time, and different players do this more smoothly that others. The best thing to do if it is happening too frequently is to extend your footage for over a minute or two and hope that not too many people watch your menu for that long.
You could also try fading out at the end before the loop, but to be honest I've never had much luck with that. The best approach is simply to minimise the number of times the loop takes place, by extending the menu time (and the footage that goes in it of course).

  • Are there glitches in iMovie or iDVD that would create problems with viewing a finished project on a standard dvd player?

Everytime I render a new project in iMovie and share it with iDVD to produce a video, there always seems to be glitches in the finished project.  I have gone back and tried to recreate the slideshow, but have not had a whole lot of luck.  I am wondering if I need to delete the iMovie and iDVD applications from the computer???  If I do that will it fix my problem or will I even be able to redownload the programs without having to pay for them again?  I have spent more time and $$$ trying to get a viewable disc to burn and am ready to get rid of the computer altogether.  Hopefully that will not have to happen, but this is a constant issue that I go through everytime I work on a project.  Any suggestions???

    Hi
    Yes and No.
There are Bugs and ways to make better or Worse DVDs - see if this can help.
There are two "Bugs" (or at least one)
    • In iDVD - do not go back to video editing program - if You got Chapters set in Your movie - if You try - then now back in iDVD it will ask You to up-date ==> all Chapters will point to Chapter one. Medicine - create a brand new iDVD Project.
    • There MUST NOT BE any Chapter mark set in very beginning of the Movie - or in any transition or within 2 seconds from them.
    DVD quality
    1. iDVD 08, 09 & 11 has three levels of qualities. (version 7.0.1, 7,0.4 & 7.1.1) and iDVD 6 has the two last ones
    • Professional Quality
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - BEST (but not always for short movies e.g. up to 45 minutes in total)
    • Best Performances
(movies + menus less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD (Can be best for short movies)
    • High Quality (in iDVD08 or 09) / Best Quality (in iDVD6)
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
Menu can take 15 minutes or even more - I use a very simple one with no audio or animation like ”Brushed Metal” in old Themes.
    About double on DL DVDs.
    2. Video from
    • FCE/P - Export out as full quality QuickTime.mov (not self-containing, no conversion)
    • iMovie x-6 - Don't use ”Share/Export to iDVD” = destructive even to movie project and especially so
when the movie includes photos and the Ken Burns effect NOT is used. Instead just drop or import the iMovie movie project icon (with a Star on it) into iDVD theme window.
    • iMovie’08 or 09 or 11 are not meant to go to iDVD. Go via Media Browser ( AND AS MEDIUM - not HD etc as DVD then will suffer in quality ) or rather use iMovie HD 6 from start.
    3. I use Roxio Toast™ to make an as slow burn as possibly e.g. x4 or x1 (in iDVD’08 or 09  this can also be set)
This can also be done with Apple’s Disk Utilities application when burning from a DiskImage.
    4. There has to be about or more than 25Gb free space on internal (start-up) hard disk. iDVD can't
use an external one as scratch disk (if it is not start-up disc). For SD-Video - if HD-material is used I guess that 4 to 5 times more would do.
    5. I use Verbatim ( also recommended by many - Taiyo Yuden DVDs - I can’t get hold of it to test )
    6. I use DVD-R (no +R or +/-RW) - DVD-R play’s on more and older DVD-Players
    7. Keep NTSC to NTSC - or - PAL to PAL when going from iMovie to iDVD
(I use JES_Deinterlacer to keep frame per sec. same from editing to the Video-DVD result.)
    8. Don’t burn more than three DVDs at a time - but let the laser cool off for a while before next batch.
    iDVD quality also depends on.
    • DVD is a standard in it self. It is Standard Definition Quality = Same as on old CRT-TV sets and can not
    deliver anything better that this.
HD-DVD was a short-lived standard and it was only a few Toshiba DVD-players that could playback.
These DVDs could be made in DVD-Studio Pro. But they don’t playback on any other standard DVD-Player.
Blu-Ray / BD can be coded onto DVDs but limited in time to - about 20-30 minutes and then need
    _ Roxio Toast™ 10 Pro incl. BD-component
_ BD disks and burner if full length movies are to be stored
_ BD-Player or PlayStation3 - to be able to playback
The BD-encoded DVDs can be play-backed IF Mac also have Roxio DVD-player tool. Not on any standard Mac or DVD-player
Full BD-disks needs a BD-player (in Mac) as they need blue-laser to be read. No red-laser can do this.
    • HOW much free space is there on Your internal (start-up) hard disk. Go for approx. 25Gb.
less than 5Gb and Your result will most probably not play.
    • How it was recorded - Tripod vs Handheld Camera. A stable picture will give a much higher quality
    • Audio is most often more critical than picture. Bad audio and with dropouts usually results in a non-viewed movie.
    • Use of Video-editor. iMovie’08 or 09 or 11 are not the tools for DVD-production. They discard every second line resulting in a close to VHS-tape quality.
iMovie 1 to HD6 and FinalCut any version delivers same quality as Camera record in = 100% to iDVD
    • What kind of movie project You drop into it. MPEG4 seems to be a bad choice.
other strange formats are .avi, .wmv, .flash etc. Convert to streamingDV first
Also audio formats matters. I use only .aiff or from miniDV tape Camera 16-bit
strange formats often problematic are .avi, .wmv, audio from iTunes, .mp3 etc
Convert to .aiff first and use this in movie project
    • What kind of standard - NTSC movie and NTSC DVD or PAL to PAL - no mix.
(If You need to change to do a NTSC DVD from PAL material let JES_Deinterlacer_3.2.2 do the conversion)
(Dropping a PAL movie into a NTSC iDVD project
(US) NTSC DVDs most often are playable in EU
(EU) PAL DVDs most often needs to be converted to play in US
UNLESS. They are play-backed by a Mac - then You need not to care
    • What kind of DVDs You are using. I use Verbatim DVD-R (this brand AND no +R or +/-RW)
    • How You encode and burn it. Two settings prior iDVD’08 or 09
Pro Quality (only in iDVD 08 & 09)
Best / High Quality (not always - most often not)
Best / High Performances (most often my choice before Pro Quality)
    1. go to iDVD pref. menu and select tab far right and set burn speed to x1 (less errors = plays better) - only in iDVD 08 & 09
(x4 by some and may be even better)
    2. Project info. Select Professional Encoding - only in iDVD 08 & 09.
    Region codes.
iDVD - only burn Region = 0 - meaning - DVDs are playable everywhere
DVD Studio pro can set Region codes.
    1 = US
    2 = EU

What it turned out to be was the "quality" settings in iDVD. The total clip time was NOT over 2 hours or 4.7GB, yet iDVD created massive visual artifacts on the "professional quality" setting.
I switched the settings to "high quality" which solved the problem. According iDVD help, "high quality" determines the best bit rate for the clips you have.
I have NEVER seen iDVD do this before, especially when I was under the 2 hour and 4.7GB limits.
For anyone else, there seem to be 2 places in iDVD to set quality settings, the first is under "preferences" and the second under "project info." They do NOT seem to be linked (i.e. if you change one, the other is NOT changed). take care, Mario
to get this to work I
    • Secure a minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-Up (Mac OS) hard disk
    • Use Verbatim DVD-R (absolutely no +/-RW)
    • Set down burn speed to x4 - less burn errors = plays on more devices
    • No other process running in background as - ScreenSaver, EnergySaver OR TIMEMACHINE etc
    • and I'm very careful on what kind of video-codecs, audio file format and photo file formats I use
    • and I consider the iDVD Bug - never go back to video-editor to change/up-date - if so Start  a brand new iDVD project
    • Chapters set as they should - NO one at very beginning and no one in any transition or within 2 sec from it
    • Lay-out - Turn on TV-Safe area and keep everything buttons, titles etc WELL INSIDE not even touching it !
Try to break the process up into two stages
    • Save as a DiskImage (calculating part)
    • Burn from this .img file (burning stage)
To isolate where the problem starts.
Another thing is - Playing it onto a Blu-Ray Player. My PlayStation3 can play BD-disks but not all of my home made DVDs so to get this to work I
    • Secure a minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-Up (Mac OS) hard disk
    • Use Verbatim DVD-R (absolutely no +/-RW)
    • Set down burn speed to x4 - less burn errors = plays on more devices

    • Lay-out - Turn on TV-Safe area and keep everything buttons, titles etc WELL INSIDE not even touching it !
TO GET IT TO WORK SLIGHTLY FASTER
    • Minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-Up hard disk
    • No other programs running in BackGround e.g. Energy-Saver
    • Don’t let HD spin down or be turned off (in Energy-Save)
    • Move hard disks that are not to be used to Trash - To be disconnected/turned off
    • Goto Spotlight and set the rest of them under Integrity (not to be scanned)
    • Set screen-saver to a folder without any photo - then make an active corner (up right for me) and set
pointer to this - turns on screen saver - to show that it has nothing to show
    • No File Vault on - Important
    • NO - TimeMachine - during iMovie/iDVD work either ! IMPORTANT
    • Lot's of icons on DeaskTop/Finder also slows down the Mac noticeably
    • Start a new User-Account and log into this and iMovie get's faster too - if a project is in a hurry
    • And let Mac run on Mains - not just on battery

  • Audio Glitch in Apple DVD player when at the end of a story

Hi Could anyone shine a light on why when I build and open up my dvd project in Apple dvd player there is an audio glitch. But on the original mpeg there is no audio glitch there. I have chapter markered my project in fcp. I have ten storys and one chapter in each story.
when played on a dvd player the glitches are not heard
Any help on this matter would be great.
    sam

in Apple dvd player there is an audio glitch. But on the original mpeg there is no audio glitch there.
when played on a dvd player the glitches are not heard
Have you played the DVD with more than one player without hearing glitches? What, exactly is the glitch? A click? In any case what you report suggests that there is a problem with Apple's DVD Player.
Do you hear the glitch when you play the DVD (the physical disk) with Apple's DVD Player?
I seem to be having a similar problem, but I haven't burned a disk and used a DVD player to play it. See this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1863240&tstart=0
DVDSP shows my soundtrack file to be longer than what it actually is. Is that the case in your situation?

  • Music glitch after every 99th slide

After creating a slideshow with music in iDVD, during playback there is a major glitch in the music after every 99th image is shown.
Any ideas on what causes this and how to prevent it?

iDvd treats images as chapters in slideshows. Many set top dvd players can't understand anything beyond 99 chapters and they often drop the audio at this point which is what you might be experiencing here. Suggest you use 99 or less slides per slideshow.
    http://www.lqgraphics.com/software/phototomovie.php
    http://www.boinx.com/fotomagico/overview/
    Quoting F Shippey:
There are inherent problems in iDVD created slideshows because each slide is treated as a Chapter and a slideshow is a Track. The DVD spec limits Tracks to 99 Chapters and up to iDVD 6, slideshows were limited to 99 images. Starting with iDVD 6, Apple created something of a 'hack' that linked together Tracks making slideshows or more than 99 images possible. The problem is, many/most set top DVD don't like the 'hack' and pause/quit/drop audio after 99 images. Some set top DVD players even drop the audio with each transition.
The ONLY sure way to create a slideshow with audio that will run with no problems is to create it as a movie in iPhoto or iMovie (or Photo to Movie or FotoMagico (which I use)).

  • Glitch After Burn.

17.3 gb h.264 masterfile. No problems in the master file. Just a simple menu, does have song in menu. Encoded into professional quality to DVD-5. Burn speed I have tried from maximum all the way to 1. The DVD is fine for a while , then it glitches or stops for about 2 seconds and continues playing. Does this several spots in the DVD. I have tried 2 DVD players and 3 discs with the same result .

Do you have a slideshow in iDVD with more than 99 slides?  If so that's the cause of the pause. By design video DVDs are only allowed 99 chapters in any item, movie or slideshow.  In slideshows each slide is a chapter. iDVD gets around this by renumbering slide #100 back to 1 and goes from there.
I've minimized but not eliminated the pause by using top grade media, burning at 1x (as you did). However, some DVD players don't handle it as well as others.  For me my cheaper Sony DVD/VHS machine handles it better than my more expensive Sony DVD only machine. Go figure.
To get around it is to create the slideshow in iPhoto and use the Export button at the bottom of the window to export at Size = Medium or Large.
Follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • Strange chapter behaviour

We are having a particularly frustrating problem that has cost us a few $ in DL disks.
Here is what I have identified to be the problem. In the iDVD6 project, everything works fine in the preview mode. We burn our disk and find that it plays just as it should until we hit the first chapter marker (not the "beginnings": chapter created by iDVD). The instant it hits that first iMovie chapter (which is 1:27 min into the movie, the video freezes and the audio carries on for a bit and then it stops also. The video will sit there frozen like this until I hit the chapter advance button and then the video starts playing, right where it was SUPPOSED to start playing from the 1st chapter marker we created in iMovie. However, at this point the audio is all out of sync.
I can't help but think this has something to do with the chapter settings or the menu system. We have the main menu, with "Play Movie" and "scene selectioin" but we have placed an index menu for the scene selections also, so that from the "Scene Selections" menu you can pick from 4 different scenes, which each, in turn, have their own menu. Could this extra menu be the source of the glitch somehow?
Thanks in advance for any help you might be able to offer.
    BT

    Hi Bruce Trono
Two things concern me in your post:
    1. Was the source footage all 16 bit audio? Or was it 12 bit in certain parts?
    2. Did you burn from a disc image or directly thru iDVD6?
Might want to consider making a disk image first and the previewing said image with apple's DVSD player. Like this:
Also, please try using a different media. I recommend Verbatim or Maxell DVD-R Minus media and burning from a disc image at 4x or slower using apple's DU or Roxio Toast.
    Hope this helps.

  • No chapter fast forward for video playback in os7

Anyone else notice that you can't hit the fast forward button and jump to the next chapter in an iTunes video? I can go back to the menu and skip from there, but not while watching the video. Not a big glitch, but annoying. Why do the all the updates always have this bug? You'd think they would have tested them before hand.

It has always seemed that Bridge has been the stepchild of Adobe since its inception and that Adobe spends precious little effort and resources on it.
Remember that Bridge was born as nothing more than Photoshop's Browser.  Nothing more.
Then, in a straight marketing stunt, Adobe decided artificially to lump together a number of totally unrelated applications into artificial "suites."  These are in fact totally non-related applications that were artificially bundled by fiat of bean counters and marketers.  The engineering teams for the individual point applications are totally independent from each other and are not only not in in the same building but in different cities, different states and, some, in different countries.  They have pathetically little communication among themselves.
The humble Photoshop Browser was renamed Bridge and jerry-rigged to serve as some sort of go-between vehicle among the applications also jerry-ringed into artificial suites.  (Definition of JERRY-RIGGED: organized or constructed in a crude or improvised manner <a jerry–rigged plan>.
Don't expect too much from Bridge, and don't complain about it too loudly, or you might find yourself among others who have been told, in effect, that "Adobe doesn't charge you for Bridge."  As a "free" byproduct, you get what you paid for.
In this context, just look at what has happened to the value of Adobe stock in the last five years: –28.20% (minus).
Compare that to Apple during the exact same period: +358.43%.

  • Playback pausing at chapter markers

Creating a DVD of an individual talking to camera, I've used chapter markers so the user can jump to particular points in his talk.
However, when run in the Simulator, the project pauses/ playback glitches whenever a chapter marker is passed.
Is this supposed to happen? And if not what am I doing wrong?
    Thanks
    jON

Sounds to me as if you originally set an end jump on a chapter marker to go back to the main menu, then changed it to go on to the following marker. All you need to do is to remove all end jumps on the markers.
If you do want to only play a single marker then you can do this with stories instead of using end jumps.

  • Media Encoder keeps putting a glitch in my .m2v file

It happens in different points in the movie. The glitch is actually one frame from different chapters or the same chapter in the movie. Audio is fine. I've tried encoding thru encore then right from the premiere timeline and even opening up media encoder itself but to no avail. I've eliminated all the background processes possible and disconnected the internet and there is no antivirus software installed.
This is the second of two movies and I've had the same problems with the first but not this bad.I'm PC based Windows 7, CS5, Computer is 1 year old.I've been using Adobe since CS4 and Premiere and Encore have always been unstable for me, especially Encore so my ctrl + s buttons are pretty warn. Any help will be appreciated.
    Thank you.

Here is a shot of the "glitched frame" like i said it's a full frame from another part in the movie.

  • Replacing Chapter Freezes Playback

I replaced a chapter in a track. It works fine in the Simulator, but now it freezes and won't play audio when tested on the Apple DVD Player or on other DVD players.
    Here's the background:
    I'm using DVDSP 4.1.0, on OSX 10.4.7.
I have a chapter in the middle of a track containing 14 chapters. I noticed an audio glitch in the chapter, fixed it, loaded the DV master video file and the fixed audio file in Soundtrack Pro, then lined it up with the bad audio from the DV file, and replaced the bad audio with the good.
I exported a new DV file, without re-compressing the video. So I now have identical video (including length) to the original, and a new glitch free audio track.
I exported audio & video again as m2v & ac3 files in Compressor with the same filenames as before. The files are the same length as before. The files are the same data rate and file type as before. I trashed the original m2v ac3 and .par files. I imported the new m2v & ac3 files into the DVDSP project by just replacing them in the source media folder. DVDSP recognized the change on startup, and I suppose, fixed it.
The chapter works fine in the DVDSP Simulator. For some reason, when I build and play the DVD, the chapter seems to choke; the audio won't play, and the video stutters. It doesn't matter if I play from the previous chapter, or begin at the "fixed" chapter.
Am I doing something I shouldn't in replacing this file? I don't want to start from scratch again on this; it's a very complicated authoring job. I've exported from the DV file twice; both sets of files do the same thing. I've scanned the DV file, and seems fine. I've check the data rate on the "fixes" and they are identical to the other chapters. Original audio file sample rates are the same, and the same settings were used in all files that went through Compressor. The chapter markers in the track are all properly named, linked and in the right places. I tried sliding and then replacing the chapter marker to no effect, and trimming then replacing the files in the track timeline. No effect there either.
How do I replace this chapter with a fixed chapter that doesn't stutter?
    TIA.

I still haven't found a reason for this. I've tested and had problems with the builds on Apple DVD player and 2 free-standing test unit players. DVDSP's simulator has no problems.
I've double checked to make sure my data rates and encode details are the same as before. Total data rate is under 6.5. The only thing that is different with this "fixed" chapter is that the picture and new audio were "married" and Compacted on a different Mac from where the other files were created. The two Macs are running all the same versions of OS, QuickTime and all programs. Compressor settings are identical.
Any suggestions on a fix or what to try next will be gratefully received.
