Chapter Headings

Hi all..
New to InDesign, but trying to learn as fast as possible. I'm making a paperback, going well so far. =) Yeah, long way to go. I'm wondering is there a specific way to format the chapter page? How far from the top the header should be, how to always make the chapter page be on the right hand side page? How much space after the header before the text starts?
I'm using Heading2 for all chapter headers, but I'm not quite sure how to set up the style sheet for all of those parameters.
Thanks SO MUCH in advance for any help!

  • IDVD chapter headings anamorphic

According to Apple's technical note T51611, an anamorphic 16:9 sequence must be exported from Final Cut Express to iDVD using certain custom settings from the File>Export>Using Quicktime Conversion menu. However, this bypasses the "Include Chapter Headings" option in the regular Export>As Quicktime Movie menu. Is there any way to include chapter headings for iDVD in a sequence exported using Quicktime conversion? Does this problem not occur in DVD Pro?

In http://www.fcpbook.com/Video9.html Tom describes how to fix your 16:9 movie after Export/Quicktime Movie (which preserves chapter markers).

  • Extremely Basic Primer on Creating Chapter Headings

Would like to receive recommendations as to what others have found to be the single most clear and simple explanation of how to create chapter headings in a book. I've reviewed multiple sources on this, but constantly run up against issues..
    Appreciatively,
    Luca

Before I can face the book once more, it would be wise to trim away some of the false starts present in the document. I have numerous paragraph and character styles names which are useless to me, created or defined in an attempt to define and use them properly, but was generally unsuccessful in doing so. Now there are dozens that can and should be deleted.
I've formatted chapters 1 and 2 manually, temporarily giving up on the method of using variables and such, just to get some forward movement, and actually would prefer not to lose them.
The document is a technical book on optincs with many subheadings, 500 pages (hence the need to understand this process). On the left side header: chapter title. Right side header:chapter suheadiing.

  • Audio book has no chapter headings

    Downloaded "Walden".
It appears in iTunes as Part 1 and Part 2.
    No chapter headings.
No way to navigate through eleven+ hours.
Imagine a CD with no song titles.
Think of a city with no street signs.
    Is this universal?
    Any help?

Glad you got the Audiobook sorted out. Audible.com seems to have a really good model for iTunes and iPod integrated audiobooks, as well. I've been using their service for quite some time, and highly recommend it.
In iTunes, click your iTunes menu and select Preferences. Click the Playback tab. If 'Crossfade playback' is selected, go ahead and de-select that option and click OK.

  • Missing chapter headings

Recently purchased a new ipad air 2. Upgraded to ios 8.1.3 and then downloaded my previously purchased movies from iTunes and most of the movies have chapter headings still associated with them, but several are now missing the chapter headings. These same movies previously had the chapter headings in place on my prior ipad 2 (not an air), but still with ios 8.1.2.
Have tried deleting the movies with missing chapter headings and then re-downloading them, but still no change.
    Any suggestions?

    Just noodling here a little . . .
    1. Which heading style(s) are you using for topic titles? Are
they consistently applied for all topics, looking at the html view?
Are there any stray spaces or html code immediately before the
    <begin heading> tags?
    2. Are you generating print doc with the project's style
    mapping dot, or some other?
    3. Did you select "Maintain HTML heading levels"?
In points 2 and 3, I don't know whether these settings (or
which option) may be causing the problem; just suggesting that you
change one at a time to test print output.

  • Numbering Chapter Headings

I'd like to use a Heading style to label chapters, and I'd like to number the chapters, preferably automatically, so that when a new chapter is inserted, the subsequent chapters will adjust automatically. Each chapter, by the way is in its own section, with its own headers and footers.
I tried selecting the paragraphs with the Heading, adding list numbers, and then changing the heading style to accept the changes. And it works, except that all of the headings have the number 1. Is there a way to make them sequential?
    Thanks,
    Jim

    Hi,
When you're defining a list, make sure that the option is set to "Continue from previous" rather than "Start at: x" in the *Text Inspector>List*. Subsequently, in the Style Drawer, select the down-pointing arrow to the right of Heading and choose Redefine Style from Selection. It works on my machine, let me know if it doesn't work on yours.

  • Chapter Headings Are Not Exporting to PDF as h1-h3 tags

With two-column layouts, even though I assigned PDF export tags to the chapter heading Paragraph Styles, they are not being exported to PDF with h1-3 tags.
I'm using InDesign CS6 and Acrobat Pro XI on a 64-bit Windows 7 system.
    To export, I'm using the
File / Adobe PDF Presets option:
On the Export Adobe PDF pop-up-screen, the following are checked:
    Create Tagged PDF
    Bookmarks
    Hyperlinks
And I have the Compatibility set to "Acrobat 8/9 (PDF1.7)
Any ideas why the heading tags are not being exported correctly?
    Thanks.

There are some known problems with bookmarks and CS5 as well. As far as I know, the 7.0.3 update won't fix them, but it does solve some other problems, so you should install it.

  • Why do Chapter Headings disappear in TOC?

Hi, I have checked and double-checked my styles and set up in the TOC styles box and exported using the same TOC style but my headings all disappear. Styles are all fine when I generate the TOC but export makes them disappear and rreplaces them with a dash!

My apologies, had to rush and pick kids up... To ePUB... Thanks!

  • Word Headings- ALL become bookmarks in the PDF

Just started using Acrobat X Pro. (bought with TCS4)
When I make a Word 2010 document into a pdf, ALL the Word headings seem to become bookmarks visible in the left pane of Acrobat or the Reader, and of the main chapter hedaings, every subsection is expanded!
Previously, with Acrobat 6, my manuals were created with only the chapter headings visible and these were all collapsed. It looked much neater and the reader could then expand the chapter he or she needed.
I checked the options that I could find but I don't see how to ensure only the chapter headings are initially visible in the bookmaks pane and the sub headings only appear when you expand a main heading.
I tried searching the forum too but couldn't see a topic like this.
By the way, did Adobe sales know that Acrobat XI was about to be released when I bought TCS4 with Acrobat X a couple of weeks ago??
Seems it would have been fair to offer me an upgrade to XI when Iwas buying TCS4 so close to release of Acrobat XI !
Is there a way to ensure the Word headings are listed correctly in the bookmarks pane?

I checked that but even though I have headings 1,2 and 3 selected, the pdf is created with bookmarks that are not correct.
I did some more tests and I found that different documents do come out with different problems in the bookmarks, but the common factor I realised is that bookmarks are created in the wrong order and wrong priority (i.e. indent levels) and many are missing and should have appeared based on the selections I made on the preferences.
I have discovered how to drag a bookmark manually to be under a main heading etc. then save the document again but this is time consuming and needs redoing every time (sometimes I have to update the same manual several times a day, when errors are discovered or additions are made; many manuals are involved too.)
I don't know if this is a configuration issue or if it is a bug.
Could there be problems caused by Word formatting?
    More analysis shows me that:
    1. many of our documents are in word 2003 format (.doc) so others without Word 201 can open them, although I am now using Word 2010.
    2. Our manuals are formatted using 2 column tables throughout, with sub headings in the left column and text and images in the right column.
    3. I found many areas of the tables where the left column has a heading format code hidden inside, even though there is no heading text in there.
I tried setting a lot of these to "normal" style and saved then reconverted to pdf but I don't think this made a difference.

  • How are chapter markers implemented within QT?

Imagine a folder on a USB stick full of files – some may be stills, some videos. I want to be able to play them in sequence at the press of a button, just like an old-fashioned slide show.
Keynote seems to be a possibility, but before I buy Keynote I would have to download and upgrade to Mavericks. So I want to be fairly certain before I take this major step, that Keynote and QT can do everything I want.
I have posted a similar query in the Keynote forum (https://discussions.apple.com/message/26056146?ac_cid=op123456#26056146), but here I want to focus on the QT aspect.
    My Slide Show
Imagine a simple sequence in Keynote, 5 seconds per slide, 2-second dissolve, set to Manual advance (meaning the slide show only advances at the press of a button). The sequence is:
    Still A
    Video
    Still B
My slide show would consist of:
Still A comes on screen and stops
I press the button and Still A dissolves into Video and plays. Video freeze-frames at end.
I press the button and the freeze-frame dissolves into Still B and stops.
    QT Timeline
When exported from Keynote to QT, I assume the QT timeline would look something like this:
    Still A
Two seconds of dissolve between Still A and the video.
    Video
Still of last frame of video
Two seconds of dissolve between last frame of video and Still B
    Still B
I can't work out how QT could control the navigation. What I would like to know is how chapter markers work. Are there a variety of markers? Or just one that a user can jump to, and from that point play is automatic? Is there a marker that stops play? I've tried googling, but no luck. A link to details about QT markers and how I can control them would be most appreciated.
    Ques
Is my slide show possible in QT?

I'm in the same boat. I want a standalone presentation that doesn't require a native application such as Keynote or PowerPoint and that is not system dependant (ie, it works on mac windoze and linux).
In the old days (pre mavericks) Quicktime 7 did this no problem but since the most recent version of QT, this ability has been stripped from the program (as far as I can tell..)  Why would Keynote export to QT, when the main feature in QT that enables clickable presentations is gone, is a mystery.
An alternative is to download version 7 of QTplayer if you are only presenting on your mac. I don't know if the Windows versions of QT have retained the click/chapter headings function or not.
I would like to know if it is possible to enalbe this in the current version of QT or if there is an alternative player that will allow this function?

  • Interactive sub headings back and forth

    Dear All,
I'm working on an ePub in InDesign CC and have chapter headings with sub headings under them.  I would like people to be able to tap a sub-heading and jump ahead to that page with an interactive hyperlink, and I have successfully incorporated that interaction.  Now I want my reader to be able to jump back to the sub-headings list so that they can choose another sub heading and jump ahead to that page, but I can't seem to do that.  How can I accomplish a back and forth interaction from sub-heading list to heading and then back to sub-heading list?  I've tried cross reference, but I don't think that's what I need to accomplish this task.  Thanks.
    Small Town Gal

    Dear Ariel,
InDesign CC seems more than a little quirky in this procedure, but I was finally able to get it to work.  I have created my own website with Dreamweaver and have used hyperlinks in PDFs, so I am familiar with how to use them, but for some reason they sometimes don't show up in the hyperlinks panel in InDesgn CC after they are created, or the "reset" button doesn't clear up any errors.   Deleting and re-creating seemed to be the only solution for one particular link, because it kept locating the wrong link rather than the one that I wanted.  I finally got it cleared out and now everything works as I planned.
Also, I am working with an ePub, not a PDF.  I find the PDFs easier to work with, although I realize that both PDF and ePub can be exported from the same document,  but I'm slogging my way through.  From past experience, it seemed to me that a two-way hyperlink should work, but it took me a bit of trying to find the correct combinations to accomplish it!  Thanks again.

  • How do I create outline headings in Pages?

I am creating a recipe book and would like to use an outline heading style for my chapter headings, for example Chapter 1 Beef, Chapter 2 Beef and so on.
The heading for each individual recipe will not be numbered.
I simply want to use automatic numbering for the heading style so that it adds the word "Chapter" before the next consecutive number.
    Can anybody help?
I know how to add numbers to heading styles and I have found the Havard style numbering system in the Pages Inspector, but this does not allow me to add the word "Chapter" before the number.
I am using Pages Version 5.5.1 (2111) and Mac OS 10.10.1 on a MacBook Pro.
    Regards
    Schof

Unless these are page numbers you will have to add the number manually in every chapter.

  • Adding current chapter in header

    hi
i have made the chapter headings in a document to be a "Heading" style so i can automatically build a table of contents
is there a way by which i can insert a field into the header of the document that displays the chapter that each page belongs to? i guess that would be showing the first text on the page that is formatted as Heading, or if there is no such text on a page, showing the previous Heading text.
alternatively, does adding a section break change the headers for that section? doesn't solve my problem, but might be a compromise.
    thanks, J

    Hi Sanjay,
This is what I can think off at the moment without the run date.
For this solution, we need to store the value of sequence number. It can be a table or a property file.
Lets assume it is a table.
When you get the flag as Y for the initial load, you go and check the table if date exists already. If not, then you populate the current date and assign number 1 to the entry. This will happen for the initial load. When an incremental load happens, you go with current date and refer this table, if it matches, get the sequence number and populate in the data. So the incremental load will pick the value 1 on the first day's run
Your query is not clear if initial load will happen again the next day.I assume it is not going to happen daily which looks logical to me.
Now on the interface run the next day.
When an incremental load happens, you go with current date and compare with date in the table.it will not match, then update the number as n+1 and read the number and populate in the target side.
    Simple!
Now coming back to how you can implement this solution. It can be done by an RFC call. The table can reside on ABAP stack of PI or ECC.
    Hope it helps!

  • Preloading Chapter titles in a large online Quicktime file

I'm trying to use Chapters to provide a nice interface for users to access a long (18-minute) online Quicktime movie; I've suceeded except for the fact that the chapter titles don't preload, i.e. they only load once the relevant section of the movie is reached. So you can't see what, say, Chapter 9 is called, until the movie's almost all loaded, which, with a 70 meg file, takes awhile. The chapter headings are just blank in the interface, kinda dumb lookin'.
    Check it out:
    http://www.wholestorycoaching.com/worldview.htm
I've been playing around in Quicktime 7 with the positioning of the "Text" layer that contains the chapter names, with no success. Any other hints on how to get this to work? It was created with COmpressor from the latest Final Cut Studio.
    Thanks,
    philips

Sorry, no help; just commiseration. All my audiobooks are just listed as "Part 1 of 12", even though I've typed the chapter title into every field iTunes has to offer -- none seem to work. I'll watch this thread in case anyone can offer an answer though.
