Chapter marker help and two-part DVD's

Hi,
I've got a dance show that I have edited and now need to put into a DVD. I have a couple of questions I need answering so would really appreciate a little help
The show is in two halves - first half and second half (duh lol). Do I need to put each half into a separate sequence and then open in Encore, or do I just have it as one long sequence?
I've figured out there are Encore Chapter Markers, which I've set accordingly - is there anything different I need to do when it comes to two halves?
Thanks for your help!
Nath

Hi Nath,
AME = Adobe Media Encoder. From Premiere, make sure your Sequence is selected, then use File > Export > Media and this launches AME. Maybe I'm old school, but I prefer the control I have using AME directly versus Dynamic Link which is more "auto pilot". I think what I like is that if I encode my Sequence to "MPEG-2 for DVD" prior to opening Encore, then Encore doesn't have to encode the video, which means once my menus are done, I can have a proof DVD in hand in literally minutes! I'm usually ready for a break when completing an edit, so then is a good time for me to encode, then I come at the DVD authoring fresh and have no wait for encoding in that process.
The only catch with manually encoding the DVD content is to get the correct encoding rate so it all fits the disc. I use the formula 560/minutes=rate, so for instance 560/120=4.66 and I just round down a bit to 4.5 to allow for any overhead.
In AME, choose "MPEG-2 for DVD" for format and for the preset, choose what is appropriate to your footage, for instance "NTSC Widescreen High Quality". Then under the VIDEO tab, you can choose CBR or VBR (Constant or Variable Bit Rate) and set the bit rate according to program length. Google CBR and VBR because I know that will be the next question. I prefer CBR unless program is very long.
This will Export TWO files - an .m2v for video, and .wav for audio. Any chapter marks in Premiere are written to other files, but you need not worry about those. In Encore, start a new DVD project, then use File > Import > As Timeline and just multi-select both the .m2v and .wav files. They will import to a timeline, with chapter marks included!
When you finally build the project, the .wav audio is by default converted to Dolby Digital, which is much smaller than .wav, so if you are adding the sizes of the .m2v and .wav and think "they won't fit the disc", the audio compression should fix that if you encoded at the correct rate.
As mentioned, the nice thing is that when you Build, you will see the progress bar Transcoding Audio, but not video, so it goes VERY quickly, just a couple of minutes to build a 2-hour DVD unless you have complex motion menus to render.
Hope I'm not adding more confusion, go ahead and use Dynamic Link if that is most comfortable for you, but good to know how to use AME as well.
Thanks

  • Why don't my chapter marks work on the burned DVD?

I spent most of the weekend learning iMovie and creating a DVD of our Children's Holiday Concert with clips and 18 chapter marks. I used the iMovie link to create a iDVD project. In that project all of my chapter marks show up in the menues and the map. I loaded short movie clips in all of the dropzones just cuz I can. Looks great in iDVD. In preview I can navigate utilizing the menu buttons with no problem. So I decide to burn my first masterpiece, which is too large for a single layer DVD, but, no problem, I am well prepared and decide to burn a Dual Layer so I can stay in Best Performance, and put my DL super drive thru its paces for the first time. After 3 hours of rendering, I pull out my disc and take it to a set-top unit to make sure it looks good. It starts, it plays fine. I advance to the 2nd chapter and then the 3rd, no problem. But after getting into the 3rd chapter it appears that none of the chapter marks after chapter 3 are there. They show in the menu, but selecting any chapter after chapter 3 drops you into the middle of chapter 3 and no farther. What's goin' on? (Apologies to Marvin Gaye.)

    Helloi there!
I am not surpriced if your dvdwriter did "forget to do the second layer" ? I made a dvd with 3 small movies the other day, 1 movie, slideshow, and a blooper.
Maeby you should do the same! 18 chapters is alot, make them simpler by sending them to Q-time as new miniature films You then make nr.1 movie in imovie open idvd and create a new prjkt Use a simple theme then add Q-tmovies 1 by 1 to new buttons as extras (chapternames). the menucontrols on dvdplayer can be alittle confusing but no 1 movie starts imidiatly to and goes back to menu when ready wiewed....

  • Manual Chapter Marker Insert and Edit

The dragging and dropping of chapter markers is nice feature. However, is there a way to just enter the chapter markers manually by typing them in through a window of some sort. I know where all my chapter markers generally need to go. It would go a lot faster if I could just rapidly type them in and then use drag and drop to adjust as need be. The track pad is not very well suited for large numbers of markers.
In fact, is there a way to manually edit the location of a marker so I don't have drag it around.
And if this feature doesn't exist, why not?
    Thank you

  • Suggestion:  Mark "Helpful" & "Solved" Posts As Such in Tree View

The subject line says it all pretty much.
It would be helpful if, when viewing a thread in Tree View, one could easily pick out which, if any, posts had been marked "Helpful" and "Solved" by the OP.
    Thank you.

Good suggestion. We have put it on the tracker.

  • I want to create a "Play All" chapter marker that will play the video from start to finish in addition to the standard chapters I have-I guess I can auto start the DVD but would prefer a button-how and where would I put this "play all" marker??

I want to create a "Play All" chapter marker that will play the video from start to finish in addition to the standard chapters I have…I guess I can auto start the DVD but would prefer a button…how and where would I put this "play all" marker?? Thanks..

The start chapter button is a play the whole movie button regardless of how many other markers you have.
Once a DVD starts playing it continues to the end.
Chapters marker simply gives the viewer a place to start playback whether it be the start, middle or near the end.

  • Adding Chapter Marks makes DVD audio not work

I sent a 65-minute video to Compressor from Final Cut Pro X. In Compressor I used the 'Dolby Digital Professional' and 'MPEG-2 for DVD' settings from the Disc Burning folder as targets, and added a job action to create the DVD. I left all default settings. DVD worked fine with good audio and great picture. Then I manually added Chapter marks in Compressor and created another DVD. This DVD had no sound for about half the video. Any ideas on how I can add Chapter marks in Compressor without losing audio? This is for a school Talent Show with about 25 different acts, so I really want to have a Chapter selection on the DVD. If I try other apps to make the DVD (FCP X, iMovie, iDVD) the video quality suffers terribly, so I'm hoping I can get Compressor to work. Thanks for any help.

I've come up with a fairly straightforward workaround for this. In Final Cut Pro X, before sending to Compressor, do an audio-only export to an AC3 file (Share...Export media, select "Audio Only" for Export and "AC file" for Audio file format). Then use the "Send to Compressor" function from the Share menu in FCP X. In Compressor, create a DVD using the standard "Dolby Digital Professional" and "MPEG-2 for DVD" settings and adding a "Create DVD" job action. Make sure the target AC3 file name in Compressor has a different name (or location) than the AC3 file you created in FCP X. The resulting DVD does have intermittent audio as before, so it can be discarded.
    Here's the trick:
Open the folder containing the Compressor-created AC3 file, copy the file name, then move that file to the Trash. Find the FCPX-created AC3 file, rename it with the name of the Compressor-created AC3 file, and move it into the folder where the Compressor-created AC3 file was before you moved it to the Trash. Now you can resubmit your job from Compressor and it will burn a new DVD using the AC3 file you created from FCP X, which should have good audio. For me this created a great looking DVD with the high quality MPEG-2 video from Compressor, and the good audio AC3 from FCP X.
I think there is a bug when sending FCP X projects with multi-cam portions to Compressor. I've seen two other cases of this on the discussion boards and multi-cam appears to be the common thread. I can't think of any logical reason that an AC3 file created in FCP X would sound fine, but the same FCP X project sent to Compressor results in an AC3 file with intermittent audio.
At one time I thought the issue was exceeding the capacity of the DVD. But after experimenting I learned that an AC3 file created in Compressor from my multi-cam FCP X project has intermittent audio, even without a "Create DVD" job action. (I used VLC to play back the AC3 file and had the same intermittent audio I had with the DVD).

  • Ripple Delete and Chapter Marker question

    Hi All,
If I ripple delete a section of a clip ( and I guess more generically, if one cuts/inserts) are the chapter markers on the timeline kept in sync with the remaining clips. And if not, is there a workaround.
    Thanks

When a community member posts a question as a topic starter, other members can post an answer in reply. Please note that not all replies actually answer the question.
An answer can be just some hints or helpful information to help the poster solve an issue. The originator of the topic can mark such a reply as a "Helpful" post. A small yellow star will appear next to that reply and the person who posted the reply will be awarded 5 points. Here's what a reply marked as being "Helpful" looks like:
If a community member posts a specific answer that provides a solution to the original poster's issue, the originator can mark this reply as a "Solved" post. A large green star will appear next to that reply and the person who posted the reply will be awarded 10 points.
Only the original topic poster has the option to mark replies as either Helpful or Solved or to not mark a reply at all. The originator can also end the discussion by marking the topic as "answered," which displays a green star at the top of the topic page to let everyone know that the topic contains valid helpful information.
Note: Only two replies may be classified as Helpful and only one reply may be classified as Solved in any question topic. Non-question topics do not offer these classifications

  • A friend set me up with icloud and in the process he lost some of the book i was listening to. I can't find it in my ipod or on my computer. It is part one and two of a book; interest part three showed up hough.

A friend set me up with icloud on my ipod touch and in the process lost part one and two of the book I had purchased from itunes. I searched for it and it is not in my ipod any longer, although part 3 is there.  I tried to download it again from itunes store but they said I already purchased it and I didn't want to be charged again. What can I do? I am not happy at all because all I did with my Ipod was listen to my book and now I can't.

    Hi.
If you've bought it from iTunes, you should be able to re-download it for free.
Download directly from iPod by going to the iTunes Store-App and find the "Purchased"-menu. From here you should get a complete list of all your bought items and the ability to re-download.
Download from iTunes on PC/Mac by opening iTunes > Go to iTunes Store > Go to the menubar on the left and choose "Purchased". Now, from the appearing window select the proper categori on top of the screen.
    I hope this was helpful.

  • Chapter marker and video ipod

    My problem is the following:
I have made a mv4 movie using Imovie with chapter marker. I must admit that it is working perfectly on iTunes I can use the chapter marker on the top of the screen. But, I can't use the chapter marker on my Ipod.
It seems that my movie is not in the podcast folder but in the movie folder. Does it make any differences? And if yes how can I transfer my exported-for-ipod movie from the movie folder to the podcast folder (in the ipod).
Thank you very for your help.

I have made a mv4 movie using Imovie with chapter marker. I must admit that it is working perfectly on iTunes I can use the chapter marker on the top of the screen. But, I can't use the chapter marker on my Ipod.
Try using the "Save as..." option to place the chaptered H.264/AAC movie in a MOV file container.
It seems that my movie is not in the podcast folder but in the movie folder. Does it make any differences?
Not as far as playback is concerned in iTunes or on the iPod.
And if yes how can I transfer my exported-for-ipod movie from the movie folder to the podcast folder (in the ipod).
An file created using the "Movie to iPod" export option is (supposedly) compatible with playback on an iPod. This process does not, however, create a Podcast. To turn you iPod compatible file into a Podcast, run it through an application like Podcast Maker. This will mark the file internals properly, upload the file to your server, and take care of XML/RSS requirements.

  • In DVD SP when setting a target use track or chapter marker?

If you have muliple tracks, slideshows and menus in your project and the tracks have only one chapter marker and you have the option of setting as a target, the track or the chapter marker which should you use or does it matter? Also would the same rule apply for setting the "next or "previous" targets in the advanced connections? I hope I am being clear on this, if not I can add more info.

    Jeff
In DVD SP there will be some limits on how you can move markers, they will not be frame accurate.
I usually use the key commands to jump back and forth between markers, then use inspector to nudge
You can also try to just export the Final Cut movie with the new marker positions and use that to set the markers in DVD SP then use the previously encoded video
Take a look here for this workaround that is good if markers do not show up and also will do what you need now

  • Bad Chapter Marker: Simulate works fine, DVD freezes

Working on a Choir Concert with multiple chapters. Simulate works fine. But the build produced a freeze a split seconds after a chapter marker. I have changed the chapter location but it still freezes at the exact same spot. If I go to a chapter after the troublesome one, it plays fine. If play fine up to the chapter marker.
When I moved the chapter marker, it played fine, until the chapter marker was encountered again.
The chapter marker was set in FCP 5.1. All other chapter marker work fine.
Below are the compressor settings used.
I will delete and reenter it in DVDSP. But I am curious: why would a chapter marker would go bad?

Simulate works fine. But the build produced a freeze a split seconds after a chapter marker. I have changed the chapter location but it still freezes at the exact same spot.
It sounds like you are saying that "same exact spot" means the spot where the marker is moved to and not the same exact splace on the timeline, and it looks that way based on the rest of your post(?)
The chapter marker was set in FCP 5.1. All other chapter marker work fine.
Could be a few things. First make sure you have not accidently set a command for that chpater maker, you may have done so and Simulator since it is not perfect maybe it is missing it somehow.
I would delete just the one marker causing problems and see if it plays all the way through without the problem marker, and if it works, I would copy one of the markers that works at put it into the spot you want.

  • Marking an event as part of two calendars?

Is there any way to mark an event as part of two different calendars or am I limited to one?

    Hi Colin,
Due to the way iCal works events can only be in one calendar.
You can duplicate an event in another calendar by selecting the event, copying it (command-c), selecting the destination calendar from the calendar list and pasting (command-v). Incidentally, once you have copied the event details you can paste them into other applications as text.
    Best wishes
