Chapter marker thumbnails getting duplicated, out of order (FCPX 10.1.4)

Group - I use FCPX to compile home movies of my kids, the pets, etc. I use footage from a Canon HD camcorder and an iPhone 6+. I import them into FCPX, trim, transition, maybe throw in some music, and usually put in 40 or so stills (JPEGS) at the end for a slide show.
The project I'm working on now is around 2.5h long after editing and transitions. I put chapter markers at the beginning of each scene, and then drag the pin to set a custom chapter marker thumbnail.
The issue - no matter what I do, I can't seem to get ALL of the thumbnails sorted properly. Meaning, I get one or two out of order, and numerous ones duplicate. I've rebooted, trashed prefs (opt-com start), copied all the clips into a new project and re-rendered, and even deleted them all and manually applied them all again. There are roughly 36 or 37 chapters in this project. I tend to get a different result each time, but with the same general problem.
Sadly, iMovie worked pretty flawlessly for me, but I thought I'd enjoy the added capabilities of FCPX. The rendering time for this movie on a one year old iMac with 24GB RAM is around 7 hours at 720p, so as you can imagine, it's not been a fun project. I've attached a screenshot of the issue on my AppleTV for reference. I've seen a lot of history with this problem, though many threads proclaimed it 'solved'. I'd disagree. Anyone have any thoughts on what I am doing wrong, or is this just more stellar quality control from Apple?
PS - Are there any recommended alternatives to FCPX? I'm noticing I use fewer and fewer Apple-branded apps, I'm starting to see a pattern here.... :^(

Discs are not my top-priority here, but I remember this rules (for iDVD):
The Rules of Chapter Markers:
*Make sure no chapter markers are within two seconds of the start or end of the timeline.
*Make sure no chapter markers are within a transition.
*Make sure no chapter markers are within two seconds of the end of a transition.
*Make sure you do not have the "Share selected Clips" option checked when preparing to share to iDVD
maybe, these rules were not by limitations of software, but by 'standard'?
If you test it, try to what happens when you 'violate' these rules ...........

  • PR getting duplicated from Sale order

    Dear Experts,
    We have a schedule line category defined for drop shipment Z1 which is having provision of automatic PR creation when sale order is created and saved. I created a sale order with 2 line items and saved and PR too is created automatically upon saving. The problem is that the PR is having 3 lines items where as the sale order is having 2 line items. One line is getting duplicated. Pls tell me what could be possible reason for duplication.
    regards,
    Gopal

    Hi Gopal ,
    It cant be the case ,as the 100% the PR checks the Line items in the sales order.
    so check the quantity in the sales order and the Qunatity in PR.
    and check the item details-- Account assignment details of the PR.
    Whether they belong to the same Sales order and the most important thing ..the same line item..
    check the above you will have some clue..
    Hope so it helps

    I have a thumbnail scroller that is loading in random order

    prevent it.
    Can I get some help?? ( Safari load it correctly each time.

    In the top right of the media browser, there is a little icon called the flyout menu...  click it and choose 'Edit Columns'.
    Put a checkmark in the box called 'date Created'and then click ok
    Now, at the top of the media browser the columns 'Name', FilePath, 'DateCreated' should be listed.  You can sort your media by any of those columns by clicking on them.
    Not sure about bridge... maybe someone else can help you with that.

  • Chapter marker thumbnails

    Maybe I'm just missing something obvious, but I would like to set the thumbnails of my chapter markers to something other than the first frame. All my chapters have a fade-in, so black thumbnails are less than desirable. I saved some clips that would be ideal, but I can't figure out how to use them as the thumbnail.
    I also noticed that iDVD will let me scroll the movie to a frame whic seems to set the chapter thumbnails, but I can't position that accurately enough to be useful.
    What's the trick?

    I saved some clips that would be ideal, but I can't figure out how to use them as the thumbnail.
    Welcome to the forum, JayBedsole.
    When I try it here, iDVD lets me drag an iMovie clip from the iMovie Clips pane to the iDVD chapter thumbnail. Or drag a photo too.
    The latter should let you use any frame you want that's in the iMovie timeline. Go to that frame, then select File > Save Frame. Save it as a JPEG, then drag that JPEG file from its Finder window to the iDVD chapter thumbnail.
    That should work. If it doesn't please say what happens.

  • Tutorial on Creating Chapter Marks is Incorrect

    I just discovered that by following the tutorial for adding chapter marks to a movie you end up with chapter marks that are duplicated in the chapter popup menu of the QT movie window.
    Instead of "Add to Selection and Scale" as indicated in the tutorial, you need to select "Add to Movie". Once I did this, the chapter marks behaved correctly and did not duplicate. You just need to be sure that the length of your text track is the same length as the video and audio tracks.
    Hope this helps someone from tearing their hair out. Luckily I discovered this before tearing all of mine out.

    Not so fast.
    There's another problem, to do with the duration of the chapter track movie before it is copied and pasted into the main movie.
    The tutorial tells us that when we export the timecode text file to work on, we should set fractions of seconds to 1/30th. I understand that this is because this is the way the Inspector shows time. Which, indeed, seems to be the case. (I just want to make it clear that I did this.)
    Next step: in my text file I fill in my timecodes for the chapters, including the last timecode, which matches the movie's duration. I save the text file, open it in Quicktime and... whaa? The duration is fractionally longer. I select all and paste into my main movie and "Add to movie" and, yes, the chapter track pushes out the end of the movie. Well, no worries, I can trim the end of the movie.
    But this is not enough! I also find that some of the chapters begin at the wrong points. Really odd. It seems to be chapter points early in the movie rather than later, which is counterintuitive since one would think that a timecode error would aggregate over the length of the movie.
    The only way I've found to overcome this issue is to launch QuickTime Player 6 and use this instead. It opens text files with chapter information and creates chapter "movies" of the right length. When pasted into the main movie, chapter markers fall in exactly the right place.
    I think I'd better make a bug report. Anyone else come across this?

  • Arguments out of order error

    Hi all,
    With Sun Studio 10 we get "arguments out of order error" which we don't get with any other comiler or Sun Studio 11. The error is as below:
    "/build/builds/bczar/Studio/ACE_wrappers/TAO/tao/BD_String_Argument_T.inl", line
    14: Error: Arguments out of order for TAO::In_BD_String_Argument_T<S_var, BOUND

    The template definition is:
    template<typename S_var,

    template <typename> class Insert_Policy>
    class In_BD_String_SArgument_T : public InArgument
    public:
    In_BD_String_SArgument_T (void);

    Any one ideas? We can deliver a preprocessor output of the code if needed.

    Is there a way that I can send you or another sun engineer the preprocessor output, that really should be enough to tacke this. It is 976 Kb of size. The code that the error is given about is:
    template < typename S_var ,
    size_t BOUND ,
    template < typename > class Insert_Policy >

  • Duplicated chapter marks

    I've just found out about the ability to add chapter marks to QuickTime movies, something which is incredibly useful and should be exploited more often. But I can't seem to get it to work properly...
    Let's say I create a plain text document with my chapter names called "text1", and open that file in QuickTime. When I 'select all', copy, go to my movie, select 'Add to Selection and Scale', go into Movie Properties, choose Other Settings > Chapters [etc...] the little menu that pops up in the timeline shows all of my chapter names perfectly. At this point, I haven't exported "text1" from QuickTime as a text-to-text document.
    When I do export "text1" as a text-to-text document and open "text1" in TextEdit, I get a list of my chapter names and timecodes - I change these timecodes to the corresponding chapter name, and save the file as "text2".
    When I open "text2" in QT and go through 'select all', copy, Movie Properties [etc...] the little menu that pops up in the timeline seems to duplicate most (but not all) of my chapter marks. So for example the list would show:
    Titles
    Titles
    Introduction
    Introduction
    Jo
    Jo
    Claire
    Journey
    Journey
    Arrival
    Arrival
    Dinner
    Party
    Afterwards
    Clicking on the 'duplicate' chapter name takes me to a point in the movie that I haven't specified. This happens *every single time* I put in the correct timecodes to the corresponding chapter name; with every single movie I try, and it's really quite frustrating.
    I know it's a long post - but any help would be much appreciated from you lovely people
    17" iMac G4 800Mhz   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   80GB, 768MB RAM

    1. Yes, I'm saving as a .txt file.
    2. Maybe I should have explained it a bit better; I think you might have misunderstood me. The first time I went through the procedure of added chapter markers, everything seemed to go okay, no error messages etc. I noticed that the chapter menu appeared in the timeline, so thought I'd have a look to see it was working okay before I actually saved the file - it was then I noticed that most of the chapter names had been duplicated.
    So then I decided to try again from the beginning; creating a new .txt file with my chapter names, opening and exporting that .txt file from QuickTime. At this point I'd normally open that new file in TextEdit and input the relvant timecodes; but I decided to import that file into my movie, *as if* I'd already put in the relevant timecodes. When I did this, my chapter names appeared fine, no duplications etc. Thinking that everything was okay now, I'd open this .txt file in TextEdit and put in the relevant timecodes, save, and use that file in QT - but the chapter names are duplicated in QT.
    It seems that my chapter names are only ever duplicated whenever I put in my own timecodes in the .txt file (after exporting as a text-to-text in QT). and yes, I'm using QT Pro 7.04, repaired permission etc I do appreciate your help in this.

  • Albums out of order and duplicated after using Match

    I finished Matching all of my tracks, and endbled iTunes Match on my Desktop, Laptop, and iPhone. My Mac laptop (where I originally enabled and purchased Match) shows my library as I want it-- everything in order correctly and all of the correct album art.
    My desktop shows everything almost correctly. There are a few albums split into multiple (sometimes 7-10) parts, and album art is missing.
    My iPhone (which has no local stored music right now) shows everything almost correctly. Some of the split albums that showed incorrectly on the desktop are in 2 parts instead of 10. Plus, some of the albums are completely out of order and duplicated in the album list view. I attached a screenshot below.
    The "duplicated" albums seem to be alphabetically wrong because one of the tracks (When Love Takes Over, David Guetta) starts with a W. The problem is, the album for that track IS correctly set, and the artist and album artist are both David Guetta. Changing the album (which displays correctly in iTunes on my Mac, and even on my Windows Desktop) to a complilation does nothing.
    How can I fix this?
    (P.S. I have an iPhone 4S, Macbook Pro, and Windows desktop, all running the latest iTunes. I have only 293 songs, so I do not have a large library)

    I ended up fixing my issue. The problem was the fact that some of the songs in an album were marked as part of a compilation, but some were not. iTunes seems to be less strict about grouping things in albums, so I never really noticed it.
    However, this, combined with the fact that I could not update the metadata after the song is added to iCloud resulted in me changing the metadata on the computer, only to have it reset when I updated Match. I solved the problem by deleted everything from iCloud and rematching it, but only after I had corrected the compilation issue.
    So, if you are havng the same issue, delete and readd everything to iCloud. I deleted everything from a second PC (that had no locally stored files) and then rematched from my laptop (where iTunes asked whether I wanted to add to iCloud, keep the song, or delete it. Choose "Add to iCloud" to rematch).

  • Data written to socket getting lost?  or perhaps out of order?

    I'm trying to fix a bug in Flashmog. The bug is described in more detail here.
    Basically what is happening is that my Flash client claims that it is calling functions that don't arrive at the server -- or they arrive, but the socket data is out of order and therefore is garbled.  I've stared at the source code for hours and tried a lot of trial-and-error type stuff and added trace statements to see if I can find the problem and I'm not having any luck.
    In particular, there's class I have called RPCSocket that extends the AS3 Socket class so I can serialize data structures before sending them across a socket.  At one point, this RPCSocket class calls super.writeBytes and super.Flush.  It is the point at which I send all data out of my client. The data is binary data in AMF3 format.
              public function executeRPC(serviceName:String, methodName:String, methodParams:Array):void {
                   if (!this.connected) {
                        log.write('RPCSocket.executeRPC failed. ' + methodName + ' attempted on service ' + serviceName + ' while not connected', Log.HIGH);
                        throw new Error('RPCSocket.executeRPC failed. ' + methodName + ' attempted on service ' + serviceName + ' while not connected.');
                        return;
                   var rpc:Array = new Array();
                   rpc[0] = serviceName;
                   rpc[1] = methodName;
                   rpc[2] = methodParams;
                   var serializedRPC:ByteArray = serialize(rpc);
                   if (!serializedRPC) {
                        log.write('RPCSocket.executeRPC failed.  Serialization failed for method ' + methodName + ' on service ' + serviceName, Log.HIGH);
                        dispatchEvent(new IOErrorEvent(IOErrorEvent.IO_ERROR, false, false, 'RPCSocket.executeRPC failed.  Serialization failed for method ' + methodName + ' on service ' + serviceName));
                   super.writeUnsignedInt(serializedRPC.length);
                   super.writeBytes(serializedRPC);
                   super.flush();
              } // executeRPC
    Can someone recommend a way for me to store without corruption, conversion, or filtering or translation of any kind *all* of the information sent across this socket? I'd like to write it to a file.  I'm guessing that keep a global ByteArray var and storing the info there might work, but I'm wondering how I might get the contents of that ByteArray into a file so I can inspect it.
    Also, I'm wondering if I might be able to inspect what flash actually sends out on the socket?  I have a sneaking suspicion that data I supply to super.writeBytes may be sent out of order or may not actually get sent across the socket.  This bug I'm talking about only seems to happen under high-stress situations when I'm sending dozens of messages per second across this one socket.

  • My photos are out of chronological order after the os 5 upgrade.   How can I get them back in order?

    My photos are out of chronological order after the os 5 upgrade.   How can I get them back in order?
    If its not possible, how do I go back to the old  os?

    I had tried that several times with no luck.  Late last night I was finally able to get through  to the Verizon technical support who then called in Apple technical support.  It took 1 1/2 hours for them to figure it out and guide me through a fix.  So here's the deal .......... I use Yahoo mail and had left the "contacts" button in the on position.  Apparently Yahoo likes to go into your contacts and gather information and can leave it in shambles.  My advice is, go to settings, then mail, contacts, calendars.  Select any and all of your email accounts and go in and turn off their access to your information.  Leave it on for Icloud but none of the others.

    My music is organized on my computer but the songs under the albums are out of order on my ipod, they weren't before, i've restored, still out of order. what do i do to get them in order?

    Have you tried creating a playlist for your album, then
    select the playlist in iTunes.
    right-click the playlist name -> select +copy to play order+. -> sync.

  • Song order in itunes is out of order, can't fix with get info as apple suggests

    I recently got a new 160gb Ipod and noticed when i synced with my itunes library that a lot of my albums are out of order. looked around trying to fix myself, but the suggestion to go to 'get info' tab and fix song order is not working. Noticed that the date on a lot of the albums is 1969 despite the fact that they are newer albums

  • Why do my photographs get out of order after I burn them to a CD-R?

    Why do my photographs get out of order after I burn them to a CD-R?  They are in a folder in desktop and in order before I burn the CD.  What am I doing wrong?

    Hi there,
    I don't know if it's too late to help, but I had this same problem and have found a solution that does not involve an iPhoto-only-CD or a slideshow.  So for future users with this issue:
    The photos get out of order because iPhoto's software arranges them superficially as you please, but when you put them back in an ordinary folder the computer wants to arrange them by date or file name (the original file name).  You're not doing anything wrong, it's just the difficult thing about switching between an application and file storage on the finder.
    The word you're looking for is Export, under the file menu in iPhoto.
    Make a new folder on the desktop (or wherever).   Use the Export function under file.  A box should appear.  Choose the quality of JPeg you want, etc.  This next part is key:  if you set the "File Name" bar to "Sequential" the photos will be renamed in your order when they are sent to your new folder.  This way, even if they are sorted by name they will appear in the order you want.  You can also put a prefix on it, for instance "Paris-" would give you files named "Paris-01", "Paris-02" etc.  Now you should be able to burn the new folder on a disk using the usual methods.  And your PC friends will be able to see it!
    P.S. you could also just upload the ablum to flickr, facebook, or something in the cloud and keep your order that way.  But if you want a hard copy this is way is handy.

  • Keys out of order - reinstalling OS X or get Disk Warrior - Advice?

    My nightmare is below but before describing it, I'm at this point in the problem: using an IBM laptop I've already logged into my 800MHz Mac G4 using Target mode and extracted all important files using HFS Explorer. Now I need help on what to do next so that I can try to save myself from having to reformat the Mac's hard drive. The full story:
    I ran 5 Apple software updates (listed below with approximate versions from my recollection) and the Mac installed them fine but rebooted to a blank blue screen. The OS level before running these updates was v.10.4.10 ...
    Apple OS X version 10.4.11 update
    QuickTime v. 7.5.1
    Java Console update
    iTunes 8.0.1
    …and one other minor update program.
    ... after several reboots I found that the Mac was pretty much gone. The error message I got in verbose mode was: "keys out of order, (4, 726)". I started the Mac in Single User Mode and ran several variants of the fsck command (-y, -fy, etc.) about 4 times each and no dice - the message I always got was: "Rebuilding catalog B-tree"... followed by: "volume could not be repaired". The Mac will not boot from the Mac OS X CD and I already tried holding down the "C" key trick but no dice there either. The only thing I haven't tried yet is typing "boot cdrom" at the Apple Firmware prompt - and wanted to ask if anyone thinks this might actually boot the OS X CD (?)
    At this point my real question is how to preserve the programs & files on the Mac and get it back working, if possible, without having to reformat the hard drive. I did not purchase Disk Warrior because the Mac won't boot the OS X CD using the "C" key. The Mac will eject the CD tray and I can insert the OS X CD but the CD never spins up and the Mac spits the CD out and then shuts itself down. If the "boot cdrom" command will work in the Firmware, then purchasing Disk Warrior becomes an option. I see my options right now as the following. Anyone know which option is best to reduce the headache factor and save the wallet.
    1. If "boot cdrom" using Apple Firmware will in fact boot a CD, will using Disk Warrior preserve the Mac's installed programs (Adobe Suite CS2) once Disk Warrior creates the new hard drive volume?
    2. Use "boot cdrom" using Apple Firmware and re-install OS X (will Adobe Suite still be installed?) Yes, it's a legal copy of CS2 but the install CD is not at my house and will take a week to get.
    3. Reformat the hard drive, install OS X and reinstall Adobe Suite, reconfigure my wireless settings, etc. and all the other stuff you have to do after a hard drive has to be reformatted.
    4. Take it to the local Apple Store
    5. ??? Any other options out there ???
    Thanks in advance.
    RPQ

    Thank you for the replies. Here is the final outcome on this one: a bad hard drive. The verdict from a local Apple authorized service center was that it was a coincidence that the hard drive (made in 2001) pretty much failed at the point when I was running the 5 updates. On their test bench, my Mac would not boot from the OS X CD or a DiskWarrior CD, but, it would boot from an external hard drive. I was told the CD-ROM drive and hard drive are on separate buses so the service provider did some testing with a new hard drive and the old hard drive. They were straight with me and everything they tried made sense because they were the same problems that I encountered when trying to fix/diagnose the Mac. In the end, they installed a new 250GB hard drive, installed OS 10.4.6 and gave me the old hard drive back – on which I still can access all the old files just in case I missed any with my original copy job to my laptop using HFS Explorer. $169 total bill. Not bad.
    I still think there is probably a way to clone the old hard drive but that could have run up the labor charges and by that time I could have purchased another entire (used) G4. So the only real loss is not having the Adobe CS2 suite of programs installed but I can still get the install disk if needed. Now sitting in my update list is: the Apple update to OS 10.4.11… the minimum OS system requirement to get a brand new Nano to work on a Mac. My fear is that running that update might cause the same Keys out of Order issue on this ol’ Mac so I’m thinking that I’m not going to install any more updates – just in case!

  • I  think that I no have luck. My mac has many problems: the source burnt, the keyboard went out of order , the screen is full of spots and the last one was the battery which is no charging anymore. I am already spent a lot of money to get the mac in order

    I am really disapointed with my MacBook Air. I bought it around two years ago and every three months I need to do something to fix it. First was my source, it did not work and need to buy a new one after searched in 5 shops in Brasília/ Brazil. After this was the screen, full of waves and dark spots. Next was the keyboard which went out of order and I need to change by a new one (20 days waiting for the service in Goiânia/Brazil). Now was the battery, which is not charging! And the support told me to change and more 20 days waiting for the repair. When I bought my first Mac I really think that I never have so many problems. Anyone has the same issues?
    Best
    Janine

    Your dsplay is getting extended onto the external monitor. Chcnage the setting to duplicate it or only display on the external monitor and you should be fine,
    Let me know if this worked for you.
