Chapter markers and the timeline ?

OK so I am a fool, thought I would get ahead of myself but...
Just finished cutting a 2cam dance show, then puting a SWIPE (See Digital Juice)between each dance and while I am there puting a chapter marker so the kids can skip dances, you know the drill. Now for the problem...
I need 30 secs at the top of my timeline (TL) for an opening but as I have learned in the past if I shunt the TL 30secs along I will lose the chapter marker points by 30 secs. Is there any way of telling FCP to shunt all the footage and the chapter markers as well ?

If you're going to DVDSP with your timeline, consider creating another free standing sequence and import it into DVDSP and place on the timeline ahead of your other long sequence or on a different track and have that sequence jump to your other long sequence.

Story structure, chapter markers and the spaghetti I've created

I have two clips one one PlayAll track. There are stories for each clip, so I can play them individually, with End Jump set to Main Menu. Playback in Fast Forward works fine for Play All, as well as both stories. Skipping through via Next Chapter works fine as well.
+However, when playing back at normal speed, it stops and returns to the Main Menu at the end of Chapter 6.+
There's a chapter marker at the end of the first clip (Marker 5), and a chapter marker at the beginning of the second clip (marker 6).
The story designed to play the first clip contains markers 1-5, and the story designed to play the second clip, markers 6-14.
So, as I said, what happens is playback of the second clip starts at Chapter 6, then reverts to the Main Menu at the end of Chapter 6, which is controlled by wherever Chapter 7 starts. If I move Chapter 7, playback continues through until right before Chapter 7, then quits to the Main Menu.
So there's no problem with the underlying footage, it's some spaghetti I've created in the chapters, stories and ??
Any ideas?

Turns out it was the Story Marker that got set to End Jump=Menu 1. Resetting to 'Not Set' got working.

The difference between chapter markers and dvd studio pro markers

Does anyone know what is the difference between chapter markers and dvd studio pro markers? I can not find anywhere on Google. Also in the tutorials I have seen, suggesting DVD Studio Pro markers, but it did not mention the chapter markers.

Once you have your edited sequence or program finished, you can add markers to the sequence for use on DVD. Markers are reference points you can place within clips or sequences that identify specific frames. There are two kinds of markers you can add that directly relate to authoring a DVD—chapter markers and compression markers.
• Chapter markers allow DVD authoring applications to create a navigable chapter list for your exported QuickTime movie. Chapter markers force MPEG keyframes (known as I-frames) at their location, since the DVD specification requires an I-frame at each chapter point.

Went back and put a small split in the timeline in fcp and exported to mpeg 2 again and auto function does not see that either? Manual msays to manualy enter split poind in DVDSP but can't find any way to enter that split point in DVDSP? How can I manualy enter a split point in DVDSP 3 or 4?

Do you have any OS hacks installed on your computer or have you changed the mouse behavior in system preferences: mouse? If not, I'd suggest you run digital rebellions preference manager and reset your dvdsp preferences.

Flash Markers and the SDK

Hi All,
I have no experience with the SDK but I am a competent programmer so could probably pick it up but I wanted to ask whether anyone knows if you can access markers on the timeline through the SDK and move them hopefully.
My idea is to write a plugin for my own use to move multiple markers at once.

Hi Daniel,
You can read Flash markers but you can't modify them or write new ones. PrSDKMarkerSuite.h is the main interface for reading markers.

IDVD 7 trouble with chapter markers and burning

After importing my iMovie into iDVD, with all the chapter markers working fine, saved fine. When I try and burn, I get the message - "Assets used in your project were changed since you last opened this project". It then asks if I want to update. If I say no - I can't burn it. If I agree to the auto update it screws up all the chapter markers and doesn't seem to let me fix them!
I have one week left to have this completed. I'd so appreciate any suggestions!! Thanks.

That, I am afraid, is 'normal' behaviour.
Chapter markers are screwed up this way, and all we can do is to create a new iDVD project.

Chapter markers and exporting from FCE

Hi guys, hope you can help.
I am trying to export a film from FCE (latest version) into iDVD 08 retaining the chapter markers.
The problem is that it is not happening when I export using the QuickTime Conversion option, since there appears to be no 'chapter markers' option in any drop-down menu there. Of course, there IS that option in the 'Make QuickTime File' export BUT the film (which is in widescreen) then doesn't export as a widescreen file. That only happens if I use the Conversion option and set the size to 1024x576 or whatever. Since this option to set the size doesn't exist in the simpler 'make quicktime file' export option, I'm at a loss to know what to do.
Basically, I either export as a squashed image but keep the chapter markers OR export the film in the correct ratio but with no chapter markers.
It's really frustrating. Any thoughts?

If you have Quicktime Pro the 16:9 fix is easy.
From FCE export the .mov with Export/Quicktime Movie together with its chapters.
In the QT Pro Player open the exported .mov movie, open its property window (cmd-J), select the Video Track, then open the Visual Settings tab, uncheck Preserve Aspect Ratio and set the Scaled Size to 1024x576, and save.
Now when you import this .mov to iDVD it preserves its 16:9 aspect ratio.

Chapter Markers and iDVD'08'

Can anyone who has upgraded to iDVD'08' tell me if the Chapter Markers that are set in FCE are recognised in iDVD'08 when you import.

YES! I put together a quick movie with chapters in FCE 3.0 HD and exported as a QT movie with chapters. (the usual way). I can drag the movie into iDVD 08 and the chapter markers and titles are included. (as expected). This was a big fear of mine. It seems to work fine in the iDVD preview mode. I did not burn the movie to a DVD, but it seems to work.

Chapter Markers and relationship to buttons in Encore

OK...this has to be a basic question BUT: When I go from Premiere CS 3 and send my time line that has chapter markers (and each of these chapter markers has descriptive text)...when I send hit Export to Encore, how do I get a menu that would have a separate "Chapter" menu with these exact Chapter Markers automatically set to a button: If I have 16 chapter markers, how do I automatically get 16 buttons on the "Select Chapter" or Select Scene menu. It seems I have to take a template from Encore add additional buttons to equal 16 buttons that I would need then edit it in PhotoShop and correct the text from the button template...and so much WORK!!!!!
Wont Encore read the chapter markers and their text from the time line and automatically create the buttons on a separate menu page called "Scene Select" or something like that?
Please SAVE my life with any support or help. I cannot seem to find the Adobe video that would help me with this

How do I fix the timeline so both the images and the timeline are 1080p?

Hello everybody. I'm a relative newbie to FCP, but not totally new to the world of video editing. I've got a problem that I hope somebody out there can assist me with.
I've shot a lot of footage in HD (1080p) and have imported everything into a timeline. I've performed all my edits, transitions, music integration etc - now when I go to output the footage I realise I've made the mistake of doing everything in a 576p timeline.
I've figured out how to resize the timeline, but all the clips appear in their original 576p resolution in the middle of the canvas (ie huge bars around the image)..
My question is simple enough.. How do I fix the timeline so both the images and the timeline are 1080p? Is there a method to 'resize' all the clips to the new timeline? Will this resize the 576p clips or will they still be native 1080p?
If importing all those clips into the original timeline has destroyed pixels, then resizing to 1080p is definately not what I want to do. I want to retain all the resolution of the original clips.
Any advice would be very much appreciated. I've created nearly 300 edits in this timeline, not including all the effects and transitions. If I have to redo all this because I set up the timeline incorrectly I'm going to be rather upset!

If you captured the footage as 1080 then the fastest way to re-size all the clips back to 1080 is to select all the clips on the time line and then in the menu bar go to Edit -> Remove Attributes. This will pop up window asking which attributes you want to remove. I would try checking the Basic Motion and Distort attributes and click OK. This should pop everything back to their original size and shape.
However, this will also remove any re-sizing or distortion that is intentional (ie to blow up a particular clip so you can focus on something).

Is it possible to insert Chapter Markers via the iOS app?

So I got myself involved in a project that involves creating audiobooks and podcasts. My responsibility involves scanning thru the files, inserting the marks to create the chapters, editing for content and finally creating the .m4a and .m4b files. Very labor intensive - I'm not complaining - but this brings me to the point.
I'm able to do all this easily enough with Sound Forge and Chapter & Verse but I’m forced to sit in front of the PC for hours on end. I’d like to do the marking - the hardest part - and editing on the iPad - while commuting, at lunch, etc. The issue is GarageBand for iOS doesn’t seem to have the ability to insert “marks”. I’m hoping someone will tell me I’m wrong or point me in the direction of an app that will allow me to create chapter marks (app must have the ability to import files).

No, GarageBand on the iPad cannot add chapter markers. You can mix a song arrangement and do basic editing.

Markers in the Timeline Sequence

Hi,
I am now cutting again on FCP Studio and discovering how great the program is once again. While there are things AVID does better, I do find FCP has grown so well in the last few years. good to be back.
This brings me to the subject of markers - and there use within FCP.
Now I'm used to locators on an AVID (please bear with me), which allows an editor to mark the timeline sequences as well as the clips. Nothing different in FCP.
However I have noticed that an editor can mark the Sequence timeline and leave notes for themself or for future work such as scoring e.g.
But this isn't the same for clips.
Yes, markers can be added to a clip with readable info but only at the capture stage.
If you were to add a marker after that stage, the marker is just a position tool and nothing more. In fact, a dialog box can be brought up and info added but then with NO WAY to read it.
how strange.
As an editor, being able to add markers to clips during the editing process would greatly help. notes for cutting, or dialog snippets would help aswell.
Timeline markers do not help since we recut all the time and the markers don't move unless they are done so manually. It isn't feasible to ask an editor to move hundreds of these things.
So unless someone has a great work around, I'd love to see Apple add this functionality to FCP.
Any thoughts anyone?

If you mark up a clip in the Viewer, and then drag that clip into the timeline, the markers will be there. As long as that sequence is in the same project. If you drag the clip onto a sequence that is in ANOTHER project, markers are are still there...BUT, when you match frame, you match frame to the clip on the drive, NOT the clip in the browser of the other project, thus the markers will not show up in the Viewer.
In a way it makes sense WHY it happens...because clips dragged into one project cannot find the original in another project with a keystroke. Thus a small drawback to the multiple project workflow.

How can I add chapter markers in the new iMovie (2013)?

I like to have chapter markers in my movies so that when I make the dvd the menu allows me to go to different chapters easily in the movie. The old version of imovie had this feature and I can't seem to find it in this new version.

Since Apple discontinued iDVD the newest version of iMovie can't create chapter markers.

Chapter Markers and Self-Contained Exports

OK, Final Cut Express 2.0.3 on a MacOS 10.3.9 system
I pull in some digital video and edit out unwanted parts by making a sequence of sub-clips, each marked with a Chapter Marker.
To save some drive space, I export the sequence, with Chapter Markers, to a self-contained Quicktime file in full DV format.
Re-import the resulting file and I see no Chapter Markers anywhere in FCE. If I drop the same file on iDVD, all the chapters show up, so I know the markers are there.
Anyone know of a way to get them to show up in FCE ?

I just saw my chapter markers by opening my FCE 2 DV export in QuickTime Pro 7.0.3. They show up as a text track and display across the top 32 pixels (or so) of the movie. I disabled the text track. Even so, the QuickTime Player shows the Chapter labels to the right of the controller bar. However, they disappeared for further exports.
