Chapter markers cause a transition delay or pause in DVD

No matter where I place my chapter markers on DVD Studio Pro 4– for I've been advised NOT to put them where assets join together– when I burn to disc there is always a pause at each chapter marker during playback. How do you resolve this problem?

As Eric said - you don't need to add any commands at all - the disc will play through the chapter end point and start the next chapter automatically. Any command you place there will take a short amount of time to be 'read' by the player and enacted, and this is what is causing your pauses. Remove all commands from the chapter markers and you should be good to go.

  • Chapter markers causing iDVD encoding error

    TIP:
I discovered that the text used for a chapter marker in FCE can cause the DVD encoding in iDVD to fail. I kept getting encoding errors at the end and tried multiple fixes without success.
The solution was to remove the apostrophe that was inserted into one of the chapter marker names. The encoding worked at the next attempt.
Moral of the story - change the text in iDVD and not in FCE (or at least be careful in FCE).
    Cheers!

    Peter,
    Welcome to the iDVD forum!
Make sure all your iMovies have sound tracks.

And I'd try creating a new user and see if that user can successfully burn the project. You will need to move the project and assets to a public folder.
Make sure you have 20GB free on your startup drive.

  • Incorrect Chapter Markers

After exporting a FCE project to a QT video and importing the latter into iDVD, everything works fine the first time. If, after making a change within FCE and exporting a new QT video and launching iDVD, I get a message notifying me that the Assets used in the project have changed and do I want iDVD to automatically update the project? It also warns to verify that the chapter marker buttons work after iDVD updates the project. (Why would it do that?)
After updating and checking the chapter markers in iDVD, I find that the chapters are wrong but there appears no way to fix this. How do I make iDVD correct itself and display the chapter markers correctly. (BTW, if I burn the DVD as is, the chapters will be incorrect in the final result.)

+There is no way that I could tolerate creating new iDVD projects six or more times for the same project. It is absolutely necessary for me to have DVD creation software that works+
Unfortunately, the current iDVD versions (8/9) do have this bug Bengt described, that causes the chapter markers to default to the same one when you have edited a movie that is already in an iDVD project.
One solution, of course, is to add a movie to an iDVD project ONLY after all the editing is completed; something far easier said than done. You would need to carefully examine your FCE movie project and make all your revisions prior to creating the iDVD project.
I know how you feel about having to revise your movie several times, especially the longer movies. I had to revise a recent one about five times. It also was lengthy, almost 2 hours, with lots of video and photos. The iDVD project was complicated with many submenus. I did have to recreate the iDVD project each time. What helped was using Grab to capture screen shots of the iDVD menus and settings for each one, making the recreation go a bit faster. Hope this idea may help you, too.
And, FYI, I would not expect any correction of this iDVD problem. The new iLife 11 does not even mention iDVD.

  • TS1233 How do I get chapter markers for iDVD from Final Cut Pro X?

It seems like a tremendous short-coming that Final Cut Pro X doesn't allow for chapter markers that can be used in iDVD or DVD Pro. Surely there is some way to get used-defined markers from Final Cut Pro X or at least re-define the Final Cut Pro X markers in the DVD authoring applications. Does anyone know how to do this?

I have decided to say that my problem is solved by the work-a-rounds that have been submitted. I STILL don't like the fact tha Apple has decided that DVD's are a thing of the past and therefore (chapter) markers are of no use. That may be true is the publishing world of YouTube, Vimeo, etc. but it certainly NOT true for many of us advanced hobbyists that still like distribution on DVD's to our friends or a more localized (private) community -- especially to those who are not computer literate. If Apple wants to exclude us from their customer base, I suggest that base will become even smaller than their competitors who still have chapter markers in their products. I'll get off my soapbox now. . .

  • Chapter Markers End Jump Too Early-Problem

Folks, I am using DVDSP 4 and my chapter markers keep stopping too early from the burned DVD. When I play the Video_TS folder using Apple DVD player all is well. When I burn it and play it on a standard DVD player, all the chapter markers end jump earlier than they should - cutting off my full credit rolls on my video track.
All of my chapter markers came from Final Cut Pro where I initially made them.
    Please advise.

Make sure you test this on more than one player if it is a "for real" project of replication or duplication. All players are not created equal and there are the real weird things that may show up on only one or two players, but you need to make sure. You may want to try the other methods and see if it helps on the problem player just for fun. (Yeah, I know does not sound like much fun, but it is sort of interesting I guess )

  • Is it possible to get Chapter Markers out of FCPX?

It seems like a tremendous short-coming that Final Cut Pro X doesn't allow for chapter markers that can be used in iDVD or DVD Pro. Surely there is some way to get used-defined markers from Final Cut Pro X or at least re-define the Final Cut Pro X markers in the DVD authoring applications. Does anyone know how to do this?

I couldn't figure out any way to do this. A workaround I used was to send to Compressor, add chapter markers there, and burn a DVD from Compressor (with a very limited menu), or export media from FCP X and import into iMovie to add chapter marks, then send to iDVD.
I agree that lack of DVD publishing support is a tremendous shortcoming of FCP X.

  • Chapter markers not making it to DVD SP

Hi everybody. I don't see chapter markers I expected to find in my DVD SP project. This was my first time placing chapter markers in FC and it was my understanding they would appear in the DVD SP timeline. Here's my workflow:
I exported a sequence from FC that had four chapter markers using 'quicktime movie'/current settings/not self contained/'include DVD SP markers'. Opened in compressor and exported at best settings for 90-minute film for SD DVD with 'include DVD SP metadata' selected. (should I have also selected 'include chapter markers only'?)
I brought the clip into DVD SP and placed it into track one. No markers. Do I have to do something to make DVD SP find the markers? Have I made a mistake?
Note: the chapters show up when I open the .mov file in Quicktime but not when I open the M2v file in Quicktime.

In FCP, how did you create the Chapter Markers? The proper way is to hit the m key twice, then click the CHAPTER button. The markers HAVE TO BE on the Timeline - not on the clips (deselect any clips BEFORE adding Chapter Markers).

  • Exporting: losing chapter markers

I have a video with 6 sequences. #2-5 are the 5 sections of my video. Sequence #1 contains the other 5 in order, to give me a "full video" sequence.
When I export a single sequence, the chapter markers remain intact. But when I export Sequence #1 (which contains all 5), all chapter markers are lost.
(Exporting through Compressor to DVD Studio Pro.)
How can I export my full video without losing the chapter markers?
    Thanks for any help!
    PowerMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

You're correct, the green chapter markers are in each individual sequence. What threw me off though, is that even in the "master" sequence (containing the nested ones), I could right-click on the timeline and all the chapter markers were available to jump to. I don't understand why they don't export.
I did export the sequences separately. In DVDSP, creating a separate track for each one preserves the chapter markers. But if I combine them on a single track as you suggested, only the first clip/sequence has its chapter markers -- none of the others come in with the clips.
So, I now have five separate tracks, and had to recreate all the stories I'd already done, as well as re-link all my menus. What a huge amount of unnecessary work.
The FCP manual talks about nested sequences and suggests using them to combine into one master sequence. It sure doesn't mention that you lose all your chapter markers.
Is there a better way to get FCP sequences into DVDSP (with chapter markers) than creating separate tracks, as I had to? This seems like a really fragmented workflow.
Thank you very much for your insight, and for your time!

  • Compressor H.264 not exporting Chapter Markers

I am still struggling to see chapter markers show up in DVD Studio Pro using compressor & H.264. Compressor outputs the Chapters markers when using MPEG2. My understanding is that this should be automatic.

The following information appears in DVDSP 4.1 Late Breaking News file:
Exporting H.264 Clips With Markers From Final Cut Pro
Compressor does not export chapter markers when using its H.264 for HD DVD presets. You can either create a chapter marker text file that you can import or manually add the chapter markers in DVD Studio Pro directly..

  • Chapter Markers, Transitions and Multiplexer Error

I created a video in IMovie 09 with Chapter Markers. The Chapter Markers are placed where I have transition effects within the film. Each time I try to burn a DVD in IDVD, I get a Multiplexer Error at the very end of the encoding process.
I removed the Chapter Markers and no longer get the Multiplexer Error. My preference would be to keep the chapters in the final DVD but they appear to cause the multiplexing problem. Does anyone know of a workaround so I can have Chapter Markers at the same place I have a transition effect in my video. Thank you.

Chapter Markers can not be placed within one second of each other, the beginning, or the end of of your sequence. AFAIK, there is no harm in placing a chapter marker on a transition except that the viewer will begin without a clear idea of what scene had just ended and where exactly they are starting viewing.
If you're dying to use the fade to black method it will also work.

  • Playback pausing at chapter markers

Creating a DVD of an individual talking to camera, I've used chapter markers so the user can jump to particular points in his talk.
However, when run in the Simulator, the project pauses/ playback glitches whenever a chapter marker is passed.
Is this supposed to happen? And if not what am I doing wrong?
    Thanks
    jON

Sounds to me as if you originally set an end jump on a chapter marker to go back to the main menu, then changed it to go on to the following marker. All you need to do is to remove all end jumps on the markers.
If you do want to only play a single marker then you can do this with stories instead of using end jumps.

  • Two Second pause at chapter markers

    Hi
I recently authored a Dvd with one timelime with 14 chapter markers, on the main menu I have Play All and Chapters buttons, The Play all button is synched to the first chapter with end actions to the next chapter and so on, and the Chapters menu buttons are synched to the chapter markers on this timeline, when the dvd is played back there is a pause between chapter markers.
I looked into this and was told the answer is a Chapter Playlist, if so could someone point me in the direction of a tutorial and can I still use my chapter select menu, also do I have to bring in a second timeline as this will make my project too big.
    Thanks for any help
    Paul

If I read correctly, you have a Play All and then the individual Chapters. You want the Play All Button to do just that - play all. Each of the individual Chapters will be accessed and will play, then return to the Chapter selection Menu(s). Is this correct?
If so, set each Chapter's End Action to Return to Last Menu. For the Play All, do a  Chapter Playlist, and use the Pickwhip (that little "spiral" linking icon) to organize your Chapters in the order that you wish. Set the Chapter Playlist's End Action to Return to Last Menu. [I'd specify the exact Menu in each of these, and even choose exactly which Button you will want highlighted, when you return.] The Chapter Playlist will supercede those in the Chapters. In Preview, you will get an informational notice about this, but that's OK, as it's what you want.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Chapter markers created in DVD Studio Pro pause for a second on playback.

I have been using the FCP suite for quite some time and we author a lot of DVD's in DVD Studio Pro. We produce many DVD's which require chapter breaks. My problem is that, when the DVD's we produce are played back, on most players the DVD will pause for a second or so on each chapter break/marker. Is there a way to get around this problem? The playback of the DVD's is fine, but the pauses at every chapter break/marker are annoying for us & our clients.

    Hi Nat
It sounds like you're setting each chapter marker to end jump to the next. This will cause the pause you describe - if you leave each chapter as 'not set' you should be able to play thru them no problem.
    Cheers

  • Chapter Markers near transitions

In one of his very detailed and helpful sets of notes Bengt W stated that for burning a FCE project in iDVD we should not place a Chapter Marker within 2 seconds of a transition. For me, that is often exactly where I need to put chapter markers to create scenes in the main menu! Is it OK to fade out to black, leave a 2 second gap and then fade back up again? I assume the chapter marker should go in the centre of the gap in this case. It means a longer black space in the finished DVD than one might want when viewing continuously across the scenes. Are there alternatives to this, please? Thanks, Keith

  • Pause between chapter markers?

When I make a DVD that has chapters, in it (then I play it on my player, or even simulate it), there are tiny pauses when it goes from one chapter to another.
How can I fix this, so the movie plays smoothly all the way through?
    Thanks.

About the error message, take a look to the Choosing a Dual-Layer Break Point chapter in the PDF DVDSP User Manual.
About the chapters gap, is your track a single video asset or every chapter is a video asset?
If you have a single video asset with chapter markers, I don't know any reason to find that problem.
If every chapter is a single asset, take care you don't have a small gap in your track. Take a look at the marker point with a high zoom applied to your timeline.
