Chapter Markers etc..

I exported my project from FCP6 to compressor then to mpeg 2 etc. I checked the chapter markers box. I open dvd studio pro 4 and get it all set up with the cover and index I want and import my project. I watched several tutorials because I am new to dvd studio pro 4 and get a good idea on how to assign the buttons. So I select the button I want then go to the box to set my asset but it assigns the entire project. I cannot select any sort of chapter 1 or anything that will turn the box black without it containing the entire thing.
Things I have tried:
1: Exporting as a quicktime without any markers then go into dvd studio pro 4 and make my own.
2: Export into compressor without any markers and then make my own in dvd studio pro 4.
3: Export both 1 and 2 with markers and try that in dvd studio pro 4.
I know it has to be something easy that I am missing but I am not sure what,
What is it I want to do?
1: I want to know how to make the proper markers for dvd studio pro 4 to accept.
2: I want to know how to set the assets properly so that it reads each chapter individually,
3: I want to know if I need to make a chapter 1 or is that a default by dvd studio pro 4 as I always see a marker at the beginning?

This is not exactly the answer you were looking for, but if you need to get it done now before you will have time to figure out the solution to your FCP chapter markers issue, you can add markers to the track timeline right in DVDSP. Then, when you want to set the targets for your buttons, you will find the track's markers available to select as the target.

Replacing content like that almost always results in problems trying to encode/multiplex the project. You need to start a new project and reinsert your chapter marks. Sorry.

How do I export from Compressor 4 to iDVD with chapter markers?

I get that Final Cut Pro X does not create chapter markers.

Do I do this in iDVD? If so, what format, as I see that iDVD does not import MPEG-2.

Don't use the DVD preset in Compressor. Use an MPEG4 format or maybe even AppleTV preset.

I've set Orange Chapter Markers with Titles in my project from the timeline and these don't appear when I check the box to use chapter markers for Subtitles in the Destinations box to burn a DVD. I've set a photo in the main menu and it appears with the Title of my Project, but in the Chapter Menu it only shows the default list of Chapter 1, Chapter 2, etc. Shouldn't my Chapters show up on the list after they've been set up on my timeline in the project? Also, I tried burning a disc with my Chapters not showing up on the chapter list and my disc only plays from the Main menu where the picture is inserted. There's a slash line in the Chapter list button stating I can't use that option and I can't play chapters. Trying to get this project out the door before January 20, 2013. Can someone please help?

Can you post some screen shots? The chapter marker dialog box in the timeline. The DVD menu.
What's playing back the DVD?
Have you tried it without the background image? Build a disk image rather than burn a disc.

TS1233 How do I get chapter markers for iDVD from Final Cut Pro X?

It seems like a tremendous short-coming that Final Cut Pro X doesn't allow for chapter markers that can be used in iDVD or DVD Pro. Surely there is some way to get used-defined markers from Final Cut Pro X or at least re-define the Final Cut Pro X markers in the DVD authoring applications. Does anyone know how to do this?

I have decided to say that my problem is solved by the work-a-rounds that have been submitted. I STILL don't like the fact tha Apple has decided that DVD's are a thing of the past and therefore (chapter) markers are of no use. That may be true is the publishing world of YouTube, Vimeo, etc. but it certainly NOT true for many of us advanced hobbyists that still like distribution on DVD's to our friends or a more localized (private) community -- especially to those who are not computer literate. If Apple wants to exclude us from their customer base, I suggest that base will become even smaller than their competitors who still have chapter markers in their products. I'll get off my soapbox now. . .

This "Share" feature behaves the same in both FCP7 and FCPX (it may actually be the only thing they have in common).
Since the specification for DVD-Video does not support titled chapter points, the text that you have entered for the marker does not appear on the burned DVD. You only get DVD chapter points at the same time index as the time code position of the FCP marker (and even then, it's at the closest i-frame of the MPEG2 GOP structure). Also, the first frame is always "Chapter 1". So, if your first FCP7/X marker at two minutes is named "Later that day...", then on the burned DVD it will appear as "Chapter 2".
Checking "use chapter markers for Subtitles" was a good guess; however, this feature turns extended markers into subtitles (a very, very quick way to create subtitles, but limited when compared to what can be done in DVD Studio Pro).
Could a QuickTime movie burned to a DVD-R/+R work instead of a DVD? QuickTime chapter markers support text.

FCP video chapter markers not accepted by DVD SPro

When I had FCP chapter markers in the timeline and then used compressor, they appeared in DVD Studio Pro. But in realizing that I couldn't cut out any footage in FCP without ruining all of the markers I had made following that point in the timeline it was suggested that I add chapter markers onto the video itself. The markers were no longer visible as windows in the Canvas, we got them to appear in the Viewer (view-playhead sync-open). BUT... Now, these markers attached to the video (and not the Time line) appear to not be working when I open a compressed sequence in DVD Studio Pro. How can this delemna be solved?

Ok, so if this is true (about "Chapter Markers set in FCP to work in DVD-SP, they HAVE to be set to the Timeline"), does it not seem a little silly for FCP (using latest Studio updates etc) to give people the option of utilizing "chapter" markers set to the video if they don't actually work?
By the way I'm using all of the latest FCS updates and exported using File: Export: Using compressor and then opening up DVD SP and importing assets etc.
Could there not be an easier way rather than having to wait until the VERY end of the editing process to add Chapter markers to the Timeline because otherwise they get all wacked out of sink if you cut out or add any video/audio?

Is it possible to insert Chapter Markers via the iOS app?

So I got myself involved in a project that involves creating audiobooks and podcasts. My responsibility involves scanning thru the files, inserting the marks to create the chapters, editing for content and finally creating the .m4a and .m4b files. Very labor intensive - I'm not complaining - but this brings me to the point.
I'm able to do all this easily enough with Sound Forge and Chapter & Verse but I’m forced to sit in front of the PC for hours on end. I’d like to do the marking - the hardest part - and editing on the iPad - while commuting, at lunch, etc. The issue is GarageBand for iOS doesn’t seem to have the ability to insert “marks”. I’m hoping someone will tell me I’m wrong or point me in the direction of an app that will allow me to create chapter marks (app must have the ability to import files).

No, GarageBand on the iPad cannot add chapter markers. You can mix a song arrangement and do basic editing.

No Chapter markers in share - DVD or blu ray?????

Latest version of Lion and FCX.
I burned my 1st blu ray for a client last night (wuhoo!). It looks great. Outstanding actually. Used a Matrox CompressHD card to compress the H.264.
But I noticed no chapter markers present.
Thinking it was the matrox card, I did some investigation.
Turns out that chapter markers are 'apparently', NOT transferred during the share feature??!??! It doesn't matter what I use for compression - markers simply don't transfer from FCX to Compressor 4!?!?!
Maybe I did something wrong - I'm just learning FCX after using FCP for years.
I had to re-create the chapters in Compressor 4.
Is that the way to have chapter markers carry across?
If so, that is simply one of the most asinine decisions about this product. Forget all the hassles about not importing previous projects etc.. as that is a different issue, but discontinuing one of the most basic features from the previous product is just ridiculous.
Can anyone confirm the chapter marker workflow? Again, it could be me doing something wrong, but I have a funny (and SAD!) feeling I'm not...

No, you're not doing something wrong, chapter markers are a glaring omission from FCP X but apparently, Apple sees no future in DVD or even Blu Ray, so we're stuck with using Compressor or some other application to add chapter markers.
Fortunately, this is very simple if you list the timecode (each on separate lines in a text file) where you want the chapter markers to be - Compressor will import them and the markers appear automatically.
I agree with you though - it's pretty lame.

How to use chapter markers in imovie

When I make a movie in i-movie with "chapter markers" and then transfer it over to i-tunes to play on my i-pod touch. The titles can be seen on my i-tunes but not on my i-pod touch ver 2, I can see the chapter markers but then are all "Chapter 1, Chapter 2 etc...not what I named them. They can be seen on my original i-pod touch. So what am i doing wrong with how i am making the movie or how I am playing/transfering them.

Apple has removed the ability to set chapter markers with iMovie 10.
I use iMovie HD 06 or iMovie 11. (My favorite is iMovie HD 06.) Both are readily available on Amazon as part of iLife 06 or iLife 11. With these versions of iMovie one click will set your chapter markers. These markers are automatically recognized by iDVD.

Chapter Markers with thumbnails do not appear on Share to DVD

I am using Final Cut Pro X 10.0.8 and am producing a DVD for a 1:58 minute dance recital. There are 2 acts and for each act I created seperate projects to make it easy to group the two camera content.    Each act has 25 - 30 performaces and using the Marker command I added a Chapter Maker at the start of each new song with a custom title.
Once I had both Acts created as two projects, I then created a Compond Clip for each and then created a new project called DVD Master and droped the two compond clips into the timeline.    I confirmed the chaptermarks and the names and thumnail locations are intact in both.
Next I go back to the project view - select the DVD Master Project and goto Share/DVD - The dialog shows both the settings and optiosn for a black or white menu and when I click on the Chapter I see a mini thumbnail that shows the menu but they are all labeled Chapter 1, 2, 3, etc no custom names.
I go ahead and render the DVD to a HD Image file, and when I launch the DVD play the disc plays fine but the chapter names do not show up, the chapter menu for that matter does not show, and on the player when I hit the forward button I jumps to Chapter 1, 2, 3 etc    - No names or thumbnails.
What do you think I am doing wrong here?

The chapter markers are "inside" each compound. When you place these compounds in a new project timeline, they do not automatically migrate or bubble up to the new project. You may get a clue to that by simply looking at the timeline: no markers are visible!
This may be confusing, since you are allowed to put chapter markers anywhere.
But in the end only the chapter markers that are placed directly in the timeline from which you export will be present in the dvd. Bottom line is: you have to place this markers in your final project timeline.
One other option is to not use compounds at all; instead copy and paste everything from each subproject directly to the master project. This way the markers will be at the top level of your project and they will work. The drawback, of course, is that you get a complex timeline without the neatness of hiding each part inside a compound.

How to Copy Chapter Markers from one file to another

I am a relatively new GB user, so forgive the hopefully easy question. I want to combine four GarageBand files into one, in order. So right now i have part 1, part 2, part 3, etc.
I figured out how to copy and paste the actual recordings in sequence (selected them all, copy and paste, worked great.) But I also have chapter markers that I want to copy and paste. I have the spacing worked out PERFECTLY and don't want to re-create them all. I know that I can select all the markers in a file, but they don't seem to want to paste. Instead, the headings from the file that were already there seem to repeat (most likely because of the time headings...)
Is there an easy way to do this?

Hmm. This is a stumper.
I don't think it's possible in GB, obviously.
The only thing I can think of off the top of my head is to (from GB) export each project as it's own podcast quicktime movie, then use another app to stitch these movies together? I would think QuickTime Player Pro would do this.
I tried looking for the chapter markers within the quicktime movie file, hoping you could copy and paste just those, but I didn't find any access to them.

Chapter markers won't work when Blu-ray Disc burned

I just burned a Blu-ray Disc directly in FCP7 (using Sharing). My 5 chapter markers are nowhere to be found when I play the disc back in my player.
What happened? I don't want the chapter markers as subtitles -- simply want them to work as chapter markers.
I'm sure I've burned Blu-ray before and the chapter markers exported just fine. Don't know what's wrong, this time.

Larry, in Compressor, open the preview window and be sure the markers are there before encoding. If not, create a chapter list in DVDSP format and import it. I'm not sure why they don't show sometime, but I believe that if they appear in the Compressor preview window, they will be there on the final disc.
You can export a marker list from FCP and manipulate the text file (I use TextEdit's replace function) to turn it into this format:
00:23:24:15 Chapter one
00:35:12:19 Chapter two etc.
This can be imported in the Compressor preview window.

I understand that iDVD used to do this but it is no longer part of the iLife package on my new iMac. I dont want to buy a DVD creator where I have to recreat the chapter positions that i have spent so long positioning on the iMovie project.

Only iDVD does this correctly, but Apple no longer want you to burn video DVDs.
The current Apple thinking is that the entire world has access to fast broadband and wants to distribute home movies to friends and relatives via download (iCloud) rather than mailing them a DVD. The fact that in reality not all users do, has so far had no effect on this policy. If you scream and shout loudly enough down the phone Apple may send you a free copy of iDVD. That worked for some, but is now said to have been withdrawn by Apple. Also, you can complain bitterly here, perhaps suggesting that Apple could have provided a choice between using iCloud and burning DVDs:

Whilst Macs with a Superdrive continue to be able to burn video DVDs, the software for so doing, iDVD, is no longer included in the iLife bundle that comes with OS 10.7 Lion (which also omitted iWeb) or will come with OS 10.8 Mountain Lion. And it is no longer included in the iLife 11 from the online Apple Store: http://www.apple.com/ilife/. Your only solution is to look on Amazon or eBay and try to get an older version that includes iDVD.
However, the vastly more expensive FCPX can burn a DVD without iDVD or DVD Studio Pro involvement, but lack the themes etc of iDVD. Also, of course, there is Roxio Toast.

Chapter markers out of FCP???????

I've read some previous posts but am still confused? I've been exporting straight into Compressor with chapter marks and it's been working great in DVDSP.
Now I'm exporting using File>Export using>Quicktime. I did a test with all the examples with chapter markers, DVDSP markers, etc. BUT none of my markers come up in DVDSP after using a Droplet on my desktop????
Please help. Why is it when I use a Droplet from an exported quicktime movie that my markers are not showing up in DVDSP????

Hi everyone and can I just say thank you to everybody who helped me on this and other requests for assistance. This is a formidable forum. I've learnt so much just by browsing through the topics in general and there are clearly people out there who care very much about sharing tips and experiences.
Anyway back to the topic - chapter markers not coming across from FCP.
Yesterday, my revised workflow succeeded in getting 16 out of 18 chapter markers across ( which I can live with though not sure why the delinquent two failed to complete the journey ). So what I learnt ( and this contradicts the manual and the Lynda.com tutorials ) is that it is important to put no text into the Marker Dialogue box where it says Comment ( one of you guys stated that ) , it is really important not to make the marker both a Chapter marker and a Compression marker ( I know that that's stating the obvious !! but I was desperate to try every set of possibilities ) and the workflow only then works when you select Chapter Markers when making the QT movie. It DOESN"T work at all when you select DVD Studio Pro markers for some reason.
One thing I've inferred from the forum is that these things tend to vary according to which versions of ( say ) Leopard, FCP, Compressor and DVDSP people are using. A number of people have mentioned that workflows that worked previously no longer work, as newer versions of the various programmes are installed.
It's a minefield but at least it's not Vista !!!!!!
