Chapter Markers missing via Compressor?

Hi y'all, Using the latest FCP Studio, I used the default Compressor setting for DVD best 90 minutes, and my chapter markers did not get exported. Any idea what the problem is, or how to recapture them without re-exporting from FCP? I can't find a way to export the text of the markers. I also read that markers on clips will not export, only from the timeline, but FCP would not let me add Chapter markers to the timeline. It is being ornery.

You can read this tutorial about * Chapters and Compression Markers *.
FCP lets you add chapter markers in timeline; you must be doing something wrong. You can add the markers in Compressor too.
Hope that helps !

  • GOP Structure Differs or Necessary Cell or Chapter Markers Missing?

    DVD Studio Pro 3.0.2
A small project with one track consisting of two video streams.
Both pieces of video are exactly the same length.
Both are excoded using the same preset in Compressor.
I set up the new preset using CLOSED GOP which the manual tells me is needed for multi-angle projects.
The average bitrate for one is 4.9Mbits the other is 5.0Mbits.
I'm using buttons in a graphic in the subtitle track to switch between V1 & V2.
The track has 3 chapter markers. One at the very start.
One approx 1 second in, and one approx one second from the end.
The subtitle sits between Chapter Markers 2 & 3. (Button Highlight Markers).
When I run it in the simulator I get:
"Warning: Illegal angle situation. Only the Main Video Angle will be simulated."
I click on "OK" and in the simulator it then works quiet well.
However when I try the build I get:
"Lounge-View01:Angle GOP Structure Differs. Necessary Cell or Chapter Markers may be missing"
Can anyone advise what may be going wrong?
I've done a search but cannot find a suitable solution.
(In preferences I have "Fix Invalid Makers On Build" on).
I've spent some time on this trying a few things but seem to be going around in circles.
    Thanks all.

    Thanks Drew.
I'd actually read a couple of those threads when I did my original searches.
Still I went back and read them again and something "clicked".
A post mentioned that if your FCP sequence had a cut, when you encode it with Compressor, Compressor will force a "i" frame. (Is this mentioned anywhere in any manual? I missed it if it was). It then occurred to me that one of the two sequences I was having trouble with had a single cut (edit) in it.
Which means the GOP order probably changed at this point resulting in the "GOP Structure Differs" error message.
To resolve this I exported both sequences from FCP as self contained Quicktime movies. These self contained files now no longer had any breaks or "cuts".
I put these into Compressor and re-encoded the MPEG2 files. I put the results into DSP and tried again. These re-encoded MPEG2 files made from the self contained QT files worked perfectly. No error messages at all.
I build a test project which wouldn't work in (Apples) DVD Player (not unexpected), but worked fine when burnt to a DVD+RW disc and tried in a free standing DVD player.
So when making a multi-angle project in DSP the best procedure appears to be:
    (1.) Complete your FCP sequences.
(2.) To remove any cuts or breaks in your FCP sequences, export the sequences as self contained MOV files.
(3.) Use the self contained MOV files when encoding with Compressor, as this will ensure matching GOP structures in the resulting MPEG2 files.
Now all I have to do is to get the overlay to sit properly on the screen .....

  • ITunes chapter markers missing (?)

I have several audiobooks which show chapter markers on my iPod. The FAQ and online documentation says that I should see an icon for selecting chapters in the display area of iTunes, but I don't see it. Also, "forward" goes to the next audiobook instead of the next chapter. Can someone either tell me what I'm looking for (exactly where, looks like what, etc.) or confirm that it's missing?
    Macintosh, iTunes 5.0.1.
    Thanks!
    Doug

It appears only when you are playing a file with chapters. It is a small squarish button to the left of the search box in iTunes 5.0.1, there is a little menu icon with an up/down arrow on the right. Click on it and you see each chapter.
I would be curious to know if you can play beyond chapter 1. I can't in 5.0.1 (and had no problems with the same files in iTunes 4.9 or when playing the files directly in the current version of Quicktime)

  • Getting Chapter markers out of Compressor

I have a 70 minute timeline in FCP with Chapter markers defined. I output it to a Quicktime.mov and use Compressor 2 to MPEG it.
Seems that no matter which way I ask Compressor to encode it, it never seems to bring those Chapter Markers through. I take the completed .m2v and .ac3 file into DVD Studio pro and there is no hint of the green Chapter markers in the DVDSP timeline.
I set Compressor to use FCP metaData and/or bring Chapter markers ONLY across the encode, but Zilch!
    Any ideas?

    John:
Try selecting your video track in DVDSP timneline, Ctrl-click and select Import Embedded Markers.
Remember that you must crate your markers in FCP timeline and NOT on the sequences items. Check this link: Chapters and Compression Markers (from www.kenstone.net site)
    Hope that helps !

  • Chapter markers missing in podcasts and audio books

With my new 5th gen iPod the chapter markers are gone from  both podcasts and audio books. Anyone able too tell me how you get them back?

Do the podcasts on your iPod also appear under the podcasts menu?
Unfortunately, it is perfectly normal for them to appear under artist and album on your iPod. The tags on the podcasts identify an artist and an album and they get added to those lists. Not sure why this is not reflected in iTunes.

  • Chapter markers missing when I transfer to iDVD6.03

I've exported my completed FCE project several ways (include all markers, etc) and when I import into iDVD6 they are gone. I even tried exports as DV stream but nothing. Why doesn't iDVD recognize my chapters? I even re-laid them to make sure that I wasn't totally crazy but here I am crazy and confused! Any ideas?

    Did you do them correctly?:

  • Export to AppleTV via Compressor, Chapter Markers Wrong

I'm exporting various projects out to AppleTV via Compressor with Chapter Markers. Works great except for the Chapter Markers, which are out of sync...significantly, by 30 seconds or so. Any ideas on what the problem might be or how to ensure Chapter Markers will transfer over to the AppleTV setting in compressor?

So this is a Compressor-specific issue, right?
What I mean to say is, if you're exporting QT movies out of FCP, those do not exhibit the shift in chapter markers, correct? Just trying to determine if FCP/QT is the culprit here.
Or are you exporting directly to Compressor? Or adding the chapter markers directly in Compressor?

  • Chapter Markers, why aren't they importing

I'm using the latest versions of DVDSP and FCP and I'm sort of at a standstill over an incredibly basic thing.
In my FCP sequences, I have created Chapter Markers for my movies. I have exported the FCP sequences using File/Export/Quicktime Movie, and in the options area I have selected All Markers.
When I open the exported movies in Quicktime, I am able to see that my Chapters are there.
Then, I then run Compressor on my various movies, again the latest version. In Compressor, I select the two buttons under Extras that enable me to Import DVD Studio Pro Meta Data and also Chapter Markers Only.
Then, in DVD Studio Pro, I see nothing. No Chapter Markers. I would appreciate any insight into what I'm missing here. Thank you in advance.

In my FCP sequences, I have created Chapter Markers for my movies. I have exported the FCP sequences using File/Export/Quicktime Movie, and in the options area I have selected All Markers.
    This is method is incorrect.
In FCP's Export QuickTime Movie Export dialog, you should select DVD Studio Pro Markers in order for the metadata to be written correctly - chapter info on the 2nd of 2 text tracks of a QT movie - for DVDSP. (the 1st of the 2 text tracks contains the primary DVDSP metadata that allows both Compressor and DVDSP to parse chapters for you)
By selecting All Markers you're writing all metadata and chapter info to a single text track in your QT movie in a way that neither DVDSP and Compressor can parse for chapter markers.
In Compressor, I select the two buttons under Extras that enable me to Import DVD Studio Pro Meta Data and also Chapter Markers Only.
No, select one or the other.
Include Chapter Markers only will allow your .m2v to be compatible with other authoring apps.
Add DVD Studio Pro Meta-data will restrict your .m2v to DVDSP but - provided you export directly from Final Cut Pro (File > Export > Using Compressor) or Export a QuickTime Movie with DVD Studio Pro Markers embedded - Compressor places an I-frame on every cut made in an FCP Timeline. It also places an I-frame at the start and end of every (video) transition applied. This is, of course, in addition to placing I-frames at every Chapter or Compression marker that you've placed.

  • No Chapter markers in share - DVD or blu ray?????

    Hi there,
Latest version of Lion and FCX.
I burned my 1st blu ray for a client last night (wuhoo!). It looks great.  Outstanding actually.  Used a Matrox CompressHD card to compress the H.264.
But I noticed no chapter markers present.
Thinking it was the matrox card, I did some investigation.
Turns out that chapter markers are 'apparently', NOT transferred during the share feature??!??!  It doesn't matter what I use for compression - markers simply don't transfer from FCX to Compressor 4!?!?!
Maybe I did something wrong - I'm just learning FCX after using FCP for years.
I had to re-create the chapters in Compressor 4.
Is that the way to have chapter markers carry across?
If so, that is simply one of the most asinine decisions about this product.  Forget all the hassles about not importing previous projects etc.. as that is a different issue, but discontinuing one of the most basic features from the previous product is just ridiculous.
Can anyone confirm the chapter marker workflow?  Again, it could be me doing something wrong, but I have a funny (and SAD!) feeling I'm not...
    Cheers,
    Keebler

No, you're not doing something wrong, chapter markers are a glaring omission from FCP X but apparently, Apple sees no future in DVD or even Blu Ray, so we're stuck with using Compressor or some other application to add chapter markers.
Fortunately, this is very simple if you list the timecode (each on separate lines in a text file) where you want the chapter markers to be - Compressor will import them and the markers appear automatically.
I agree with you though - it's pretty lame.

  • Chapter Markers Problem

When I export to Compressor from within FCP, the chapter markers appear in compressor. If I export a non-self contained QT Movie from FCP and drag it into compressor, they markers are not there. I am saving with "All Markers" selected and have never had this problem before. Any ideas?

    Glad you found a solution.
For what it's worth, All Markers, despite the name, isn't all it's cracked up to be. In fact, it's inferior to DVDSP Markers if you're looking to export out to Compressor for DVD work. DVDSP Markers, in addition to (manually placed) Chapter and Compression Markers, include automated markers - Edit/Cut Markers - at each cut point, including the beginning and end of a transition. (The more you have to hammer down the bit rate, the more they make a difference, in my experience). Edit/Cut Markers are not available to Compressor if you export using any other markers setting.

  • Chapter markers lost from quicktime MOV in compressor

I searched on this topic and can't seem to find it specifically. Soo....
When we export from FCP through compressor to an m2v, chapter markers come through fine and appear in DVD SP just fine. However, an editor of mine exported to a quicktime MOV with the chapter markers. The file, when opened in quicktime, show the chapters there.
However. If I run the MOV through compressor using the same set ups, the chapter markers are striped from the resulting file.
I am wondering if there is something I am missing when I have to do this from an MOV with chapters.
    OR
If there is some way to export or extract the chapter marker information in a way that DVD SP can import. The text track that is in Quicktime has a good deal of other information that DVD SP won't accept as a chapter marker file. Argh.
Can FCP export JUST the chapter marker text. I am obviously going to just go in and add the chapter markers to the track in DVD SP myself. But, as everyone knows doing this after compressing to M2V I will no longer be able to have those markers on the exact frame I want due to GOP.
So, I am asking this for the next time I have an MOV with chapters that I want to convert to mpeg2 and retain the markers for DVDSP.
Just so you know... yes. These markers where properly tagged as chapter markers. (obviously because quicktime shows them as such.)
Thanks guys. I know someone else has had to deal with this somewhere.

I must be losing it. I meant to post in this thread.
My chapters are clean. Pretty good at avoiding anything problematic. I even keep spaces out of my folder names because when I learned to use computers they weren't allowed. (only 128 characters too, if I remember correctly)
I have the previous versions of Final Cut Studio. The recent decline of DVD and the economy has eaten my departments budget to upgrade the OS to Leopard and to Studio 2 so FCP 5.1.4, etc.
Maybe this has been fixed in the upgrade?
My editor has upgraded. So, this would be entirely a moot issue if Apple saw fit to make their projects backwards compatible. (Don't get me started on that) I guess I will have to stay on top of my contract editors and sending me an XML so I can work in their projects. Or giving me the M2V's I ask for already rendered.
Until we can upgrade around here.
    thanks for the help tho.

  • How do I export from Compressor 4 to iDVD with chapter markers?

I get that Final Cut Pro X does not create chapter markers.
I send it to Compressor 4 to do this.
    Ok, so far, so good.
How do I export this so that I can then author the DVD to include a menu page, etc?
Do I do this in iDVD?  If so, what format, as I see that iDVD does not import MPEG-2.

Don't use the DVD preset in Compressor. Use an MPEG4 format or maybe even AppleTV preset.
This Apple Support Article might help a little.

  • Compressor - export to Blu-ray with more than 6 chapter Markers?

    Hi,
I'm interested in creating Blu-Ray discs.  I've played around taking a self contained 30 minute movie I created with FCPro 7 - it has several chapter markers put in while editing in  FCPro.
I took the SC movie and brought it into Compressor and burned directly to a DVD with the Chapter markers.  It worked perfectly.
2 questions, if anyone has done this . . . if I buy a Blu-Ray burner and firewire it into my MacBook Pro - can I burn the Blu-Ray exactly like I did the conventional DVD?  Except now it'll be High Definition?  I'm guessing in COmpressor, when I 'selected' the internal DVD burner - I guess I'll see the new external Blu-Ray one after I firewire it into the MacBook Pro?
My question is, will it then burn to the Blu-Ray exactly like it did to the internal conventional DVD burner, except be in HD now?
I just don't want to buy a Blu-Ray burner and have something nt work?  Thanks, if anyone can confirm this.
I also have Roxio Toast Titanium 11.  But keeping it all in Compressor seems easier - with limited screens.
Oh, I only get 6 chapter markers on a screen thru Compressor.  Any tricks as to how I can get more than 6?  I have like 30, and I'd rather not go thru 5 screens getting to the end!
Thanks very much if anyone has any experience in this area.
    Larry

Thank you, Shawn.  You're confirming everything I thought!
Just asking . . . perhaps you have a few thoughts here:
    - Is Compressor version 4 any "different" than 3.5 - as far as just dropping in a QT movie master to compress?
    - I guess there's no way to get more than 6 Chapter Markers in Compressor DVD?  I don't see a way, perhaps there is? Or . . . I have to learn toast!  But I can do that!  Just easier if Compressor would do it all!
    Thanks again

  • FCP-X  Compressor 3.0.5 (need chapter-markers)

    Can I send a FCP-X-project to Compressor 3.0.5?
I just need to set DVD-chapter-markers in there!
Or do you have another idea how to set individual chapter-markers??

This is more evidence that Apple really is not catering to a professional audience. Their agenda for a while has been digital-only content. They focus on getting finished products to ipods, ipads, and apple TVs.
Even consumers have complained about iDVD being ignored over the years in terms of feature set. I bet the next iLife will be the one to not include it.

  • Compressor Discards Chapter Markers

    Hello All,
Honesty up front, I will be cross-posting this in the Compressor forum as well. The issue is this: I have an almost 90 minute ProRes Proxy cut in Final Cut, I export a Quicktime movie with the chapters, and have double and triple checked that those QT movies have the Chapters in them. I bring the file into Compressor, drop on the 90 minute best quality preset, and then wait 10 hours for the compression to finish. After the first time didn't bring the Chapters in, I redid it. What I changed this time is I did NOT check "Include Chapter Markers only" in the Extras tab of Compressor, but I did the first time. I just noticed that the Preview window doesn't show the markers when I open the file in Quicktime, I can see them. I also ran a short test, about 20 minutes of the final cut, and it had the chapter markers. Also, I've exported a chapter list from Final Cut and tried to import it into DVDSP, but it doesn't understand the file. Anyone know why they're not transferring over, and more importantly, how I can quickly re-encode a 22+GB file for many DVD burns tonight?
    Thanks,
    -Brian

Thanks for the reply. I've made many DVDs before with chapter markers, I mean heck, my first ever DVD had chapter markers. It doesn't matter whether I selected "All Markers" "DVD Studio Pro Markers" or "Chapter Markers", none of them would show up in Compressor. In Quicktime 7, they were all there, but never in Compressor. The exported movie was a Self-contained ProRes Proxy file. What I ended up doing was exporting the Chapter list from Final Cut, then manually editing the file to remove color, type, duration everything but the timecode placement and it's name. Why does Final Cut export all that info if the resulting file isn't understandable by Compressor? And for what it's worth, I'm working on the original 17" MacBook Pro, so while it has a Core Due 2.16, it only has the max of 2GB of RAM and after all, still is a 4 year old laptop. I doubt much would make this go quicker. Also, I made the disc image and placed it on my G4 Cube to burn as well as plug in my new Blu-ray drive so I was making 3 discs at once.
    Thanks though,
    -Brian
