Chapter Numbers in FM10

I just started using FM10 and am having difficulty getting it to automatically input the chapter numbers. Is there a secret to getting FM to do this?

Chapter Numbers in a table of contents

Hi Experts,
I'd like to add a table of contents (TOC) including chapter numbers in my template. For example:
Table of Contents
1. Title
1.1 Sub-Title
1.1.1 SubSub-Title
To do so:
•     I created a template with a table of contents.
•     In the report body, I determine the chapter number using <?position()?>: <?xdoxslt:set_variable($_XDOCTX,’H1’, position())?>
•     Once the chapter number determined, I write it in the title: <?XDOXSLT:GET_VARIABLE($_XDOCTX,’H1’)?>.DEPARTMENT LEVEL: <?SUBNODE_NM?> - STORE: <?STORE_UNIT_ID?> on which I applied the heading style required
=>     When I launch the report, the chapter number appears correctly in the report body but not in the TOC. In the TOC, I only get the title chapter.
Any idea how I could do this?

Hi Sonia,
You can directly use position() instead of storing in variables (Refer Template Builder for Word - TOC marker in foreach loop for an example).
But if you want to you variables for some other reasons, then use xsl context specific variables.
Instead of <?position()?>: <?xdoxslt:set_variable($_XDOCTX,’H1’, position())?> use
*<?variable@incontext:c1;position()?>*
and instead of <?XDOXSLT:GET_VARIABLE($_XDOCTX,’H1’)?>.DEPARTMENT LEVEL: .... use
*<?$c1?>.DEPARTMENT LEVEL: (formatted as Heading1).*
So on the whole it wold be similar to
<?for-each:group_name?>
<?variable@incontext:c1;position()?>
<?$c1?>.DEPARTMENT LEVEL:
Chapter contents
<?end for-each?>
Now update your TOC (right click -> update field).
Now you should be able to see the chapter numbers both in TOC and report body.

Page/chapter numbering probs in material converted from Word

Situation: Need to convert ~300 pages (multiple files) of Word into structured Frame. I'm not very familiar with structured Frame (but am working on this), and am a long-time user of nonstructured. Moving Word 2007 files into Frame9 (in TCS2).
Problem: Chapter/page numbering. No matter what I try, including copies of a file that demonstrably works, one copy does not accept the "Continued" settings for page numbering. It resets the TOC to page 1. Copies of that file added to the TOC also reliably reset page numbering to 1. When I go in to see what's going on I find that the Numbering dialog for each problem file shows it mysteriously reset to start page numbering at 1. (These copies are nearly identical, differing only in a numeral in one heading to remind me what chapter each is file supposed to be.)
Further, when I added an autonumbered ChapterTitle paragraph at the top of each file to test chapter numbering, the page numbering problem resolved itself (!) but the chapters don't increment as expected. Numbering string: "C:Chapter <n=1>" for Chpt1 and "C:Chapter <n+>" for the rest of them.
Test setup: Saw this in production files and stepped back to use a simple Word source file as a test. Constructed several Normal paragraphs, a bulleted list, and a numbered list, and two heading levels (Heading1, Heading2) in this file. Saved; closed. Opened the file in Frame (Structured). Created several nearly identical copies and added all to a book file. Added a TOC to the book. Set the numbering: Chpt1 starts Chapter and Page at 1 and all others are set to "Continued" in both categories.
Added the ChapterTitle paragraph to each file after conversion.
In one experiment I applied several of the "target" Frame paragraph formats. Target formats were supplied by writer who works primarily in a structured Frame setup that is similar to the one planned for the converted material. In one file all paragraphs were set to their Frame equivalents. In others there was a mix of original (as brought over from Word) and Frame formats. Made no apparent difference.
Questions: Is this something about structured vs. unstructured? About structured Frame WRT conversion from Word? Either way, has anyone else seen (more to the point, *resolved*) similar?

WRT "<$chapnum>": check, thanks for the reminder. (Yes, I agree that chapter/page numbering tabs are different items.) :-)
To clarify: yes, the idea is a Word > Frame conversion. The process stumbled upon so far starts with opening Word files in unstructured Frame. (I'd never done it, either---never had a need to try. Somebody new to Frame asked if it was possible, so we experimented and voila!) I have recommended dropping files into .mif and then resaving as .fm in order to lose any artifactual Word stuff.
Step 2 is applying appropriate Frame paragraph styles from a supplied list, and creating book files. (The page numbering issue resolved once I added a ChapterHead paragraph. Using the <$chapnum> tag handles the remaining chapter number issue.)
In theory Step 3 will be the move into handling the fully-converted material as structured Frame documents. The key point, though, appears to be the conversion table. I get this from a WritersUSA article by Alan Houser at http://www.writersua.com/articles/frame/index.html:
FrameMaker provides a mechanism called a conversion table to automate much of the task of legacy document conversion. The conversion table maps unstructured FrameMaker paragraph and character formats to elements, and allows you to automatically nest groups of elements. If your legacy documents were created using a style-based authoring tool (typically FrameMaker or Word [!]) and your authors have used those styles consistently, you may be able to automate 80%-90% of the conversion process. If your legacy documents include a significant amount of manual or ad-hoc formatting, the conversion will be substantially more tedious.
Looks like my group will have to create this.

And determined that I mightbe experiencing a similar problem. I have two different master pages.
Master A - Chapter Pages - I use this for chapter title pages where the margins are slightly different. This is also where the chapter number is disaplyed.
Master B - Body Pages - This is where I have the body copy of my chapters. e.g H2 trough H6, Basic Paragraph, Lists, figure references, etc.
All my chapters are built this way. Including my appendicies.

My figure references aren't taking the chapter number, I assume because the chapter numbers aren't updating. Is this true?
How can I fix this without having to redo the Master-A pages or using a single master layout?

Heres an idea of my book structure.

So I took a look at the text frames, they're all linked properly. See screen cap.
This is what Chapter 2 looks like...
The text is not located on the master pages. It is however placed inside of the text frame which the master pages host. i.e The master pages have their margins and textfields. When I create a new page, it includes a text field. The screen caps above show Master-A and Master-B threaded together.
As for the page numbering... They're generated using lists and automatic numbering via paragraph styles...
See the screen caps in my first post.
And heres the chapter title line selected. Note the number is not selected.
So... I just checked the Page Numbering Options...
And found this....
Ummm.... *face desk* Looks like I had document chapter numbering set to start at Chapter Number: 1.

Chapter numbering - how to get rid of it

Is there an easy way to suppress the chapter numbering of
imported topics? I cannot imagine that the majority of help authors
want topics that are imported from Word documents to maintain the
chapter numbers.
I noticed these numbers are always included in a specific
way. The corresponding lines begin with

, i.e., two non-breaking spaces in the span. That means it would
probably be possible to use an advanced search & replace tool

How to add chapter numbers as well as page numbers?

Hi. I have a large text document with numbered pages. But I can't figure out how to keep those numbers sequential and add running chapter numbers (automatically) at the same time. Right now, I have to number the chapters manually. (At over 70 chapters, it becomes quite inconvenient to have to renumber them when adding or subtracting content.) Help!?

Pages does not have an auto-chapter numbering system.
Your manual solution is it until Apple gives us something better.
Pages may not be the best solution for you if this is important.

Matching Chapter Numbering in Table of Contents (TOC)

I have applied the <$chapnum> and <n+> building blocks to the paragraph styles used in my TOC, but instead of displaying the correct chapter numbers, every chapter section starts with "1".
Could someone please tell me what I need to do in order to match the TOC numbering with the book numbering?

I assume that the chapter numbering works correct through all the chapters, and only the TOC numbering is wrong. Correct?
In this case you shouldn't have an own (independent) numbering definition in your TOC paragraph styles, but READ the original numbering from the respective paragraphs/chapters. You do this by adding the <$paranum> variable to the TOC reference page, so the entry/entries there should read equal or similar to:
<$paranum> (Tab) <$paratext> (Tab) <$pagenum>
Define the tabulators for the TOC paragraph styles as if there was a numbering definition, and the number read from the chapters will appear correctly formatted in the TOC.

Aligning chapter numbers in table of contents

In tables of contents, Pages doesn't align the chapter numbers correctly. I get this (left alignment) :

and I need this (alignment on decimal point) :

If that is the beginning of the line you will have a problem as you need to use an inset decimal or right hand tab and precede the text with a Tab.
You may have to export the T.O.C. as text, bring it back in and format it manually.

How Do I Change Default Chapter Numbers When Compressing for iPad?

Basically, I'd like to export a program from a FCP 7 timeline with included chapter and compression markers and compress it using Compressor 3.5 or 4. The program is intended for distribution via iPad and I'd like to include medical disclaimers and a production company logo prior to the start of the program. The problem is that the chapter numbering seems to default to 1, 2, 3, etc. which makes the program's beginning read as Chapter 2. Is there any way to reset the default first chapter marker to Chapter 0 or similar? Or is there a way to do away with the automatic chapter numbering?

I understand that the markers can be named in the timeline. The problem I'm having is that, once the file is encoded and moved onto the iPad, the chapter names gain an additional number. So in my case there is a marker at the beginning of the sequence that I've named Medical Disclaimers and another at the beginning of the program that I've named Program Start and a third marker that I've named Chapter 1.
When the chapters display on the iPad it reads something like this:
Chapter 1
Medical Disclaimers
Chapter 2
Program Start
Chapter 3
Chapter 1
You see my problem? Chapter 3 / Chapter 1 doesn't really work. I can name the chapters anything I want in FCP, but as soon as they're loaded on the iPad they get a shiny new chapter number attached to them no matter what I do with the markers in FCP. I can of course rename Chapter 1 so that it's not so obvious, but I'd still like the program to start at Chapter 1 rather than Chapter 2 (or, if possible, have no automatic chapter number generation at all).

Chapter NUMBERS? How to include list styles in TOC?

How does one include chapter numbers!?? I have used a list style with a paragraph style as headings for chapters and paragraphs (Example: 1. Introduction | 1.1. Company X), which I now want to include in the TOC. Using the specific heading in the TOC only includes the text, and not the entire list item (number followed by text). How do I accomplish this list item to be included? Is there a way to (only) tweak the TOC style of a template?

I have created a book from a bunch of InDesign files.
How can I get the chapter number to increment among the files?
I have found innumerable explanations how to insert a chapter number variable but not how to get the chapter to reset. I have the chapter numbering set to automatic but all the chapters come out as #1.

IDCS3 TOC want chapter numbers in book TOC

Hi - I'm brand new to this forum so please bear with me . . .
I'm working on a long manual. Each chapter has a TOC, which I've been able to format the way I want it (e.g., Overview . . . . 5-2).
In the TOC for the book, I can't figure out how to include the chapter number. I've read everything I can find about the subject but after spending hours I'm giving up. I've checked the Include Prefix when Number Pages check box for each chapter.
I've tried lots of things in the Between Entry and Number menu. There's no character symbol for chapter number and I've tried copying and pasting it in. That hasn't worked either.
I'm almost ready to resort to copying and pasting in the TOC from each chapter - there are 17. Yikes!
All advice will be greatly appreciated.

Chapter numbers not showing up on DVD players

Hi All
Just a quick question that someone might have a solution to. I have to author a lot of dual layer tv series to disc. I don't seem to get any chapter numbers on any of our test players. I have tried various ways of naming the chapters including dvd sp own naming scheme, but no joy. Our test players are Toshiba, Bush & Sony. It doesn't seem to be a disc thing as the glass masters are the same. whilst it's not fatal to the disc working it would be wicked to find an answer.

If the calls are from yesterday and not to another VZW customer, it can take up to 24-36 hours for the info to make it through the system.
If it shows 9999999999 then the number was restricted or blocked.

Incopy chapter numbering

HI....for my indesign/incopy workflow, my editor is building a separate incopy file for
each chapter, (chapter1.icml, chapter2.icml, etc....)
When I bring them into indesign, how can I get the chapter 2 numbering to start with 2 instead of continuing from 1?

Actaully, I have the chapter number set up in Indesign and working, I guess I was just thinking the editor would be able to see the chapter numbers in the individual incopy files, but again, they need to open up the indesign file to see all the different chapter numbering working...thanks!
